Pastor’s Letter June 20/21 Dear Parish Family, As the summer days get warmer and warmer, I am sure many of you are wondering when we will finally have our new heating and cooling system. You can be sure that my brother priests and I were hoping this would be the summer—but we have one more to go. It took a bit longer than I thought because (1) we had to deal with the asbestos abatement and cleaning the crawl space and (2) the project was even more complicated than it seemed at first. Here are some of the challenges and how we plan to address them. The challenge of our architecture: The main challenge of providing cooling to our church is the historic beauty of our building. Engineers typically like to cool from the top down — providing high ducts and returns on the floor. It was this puzzle that deterred Fr. Trench from including this improvement in the last renovation. New technology has a number of solutions for this and the one we will be using replaces the radiators with units that can both heat and cool the church. Sitting along the base of the wall, these units will hardly be visible. The front of the church and sanctuary area, which have no radiators, will be cooled and heated with several small floor vents. How much cooling do we need? A second challenge was to calculate how much cooling our church would really need. When commercial buildings are designed, the thinking is that they will need to be held at 68° on the warmest day of the summer, with the maximum number of occupants. Considering the lack of insulation in our church, that kind of thinking would require an enormous amount of cooling power. In engineer language, 80 tons. That would require quite a bit of machinery and a potentially high energy bill. Several things here work in our favor. We want the Basilica to be comfortable but not too cool. We can plan more for the average situation than for the worst case. Our church is never as full in the summer as it is on Christmas and Easter. And the average Southampton summer day is about 10° cooler than most places in the northeast. Planning this way cuts that first estimate of cooling capacity almost in half. Sound: There is nothing quite like a quiet church. Cooling systems do introduce a bit of air noise. Since the new system will be both heating and cooling, we wanted to make sure that the church would remain a quiet place. For those of you who like technical details: Right now the sound level in our church is about 36Db— pretty much like a very quiet library. Your home is likely to be about 45Db—about the same as the church when people are in it and praying. The new system in heating mode will require the least air movement and fan speed and should be about the same level of quiet as we have now. In cooling mode, a little more sound will be noticed, about 45 Db. Still pretty quiet. For a fair comparison, consider this; our church in summer with 6 fans running is about 65 Db or about the same amount of sound as the interior of a commuter plane!

One More Year of Heat

etter Exterior Considerations: While the interior of our church has received a great deal of attention, we also needed to look at the exterior of the church. Cooling equipment can be large and not especially attractive. Even though we were able to plan a more modest cooling capacity, we would still need a good bit of equipment if we used traditional solutions. But now an excellent solution is available that eliminates the need for all that exterior mechanical equipment: geothermal energy. This type of system is in use at several large Southampton buildings, most notably the Parish Art Museum. With this type of system, the pumps and thermal exchange equipment can all be contained in our existing boiler room and the only external things to see would be a couple of manhole covers in the parking lot for the wells. When will things happen?: The current schedule of work looks like this.

• Fall 2015 — Geothermal wells are drilled, tested, and verified for capacity • Winter 2015 / 2016 — Background work will be done on some plumbing, gas, and

electrical upgrades • Spring 2016 — Starting March 28, the day after Easter, installation of the church

equipment. This should occupy the body of the church for about 2 –3 weeks. Whether we continue to have Mass in the church or move to the auditorium for those weeks will depend on the outside temperature.

• May 2016 — New system is tested and running!

We will also be scheduling the pew refinishing and carpeting around the heating / cooling work. Some of this may be completed in advance when we know exactly how the removal of old radiators and installation of the new equipment will go. And, lest we forget, I am hoping that rest room construction can also take place this fall. We are very close to completing a plan for that right now. In Sympathy Ellen Danz We mourn the passing of Ellen Danz on June 8, 2015. A mass of Christian

Burial was celebrated on June 13, 2015 at the Basilica Parish of Sacred

Hearts of Jesus & Mary by Rev. Michael A. Vetrano. Ellen was a longtime

parishioner of Sacred Hearts. She was a wonderful, caring, faith-filled

lady. Ellen was predeceased by her husband, Joseph, daughters, Winifred

& Mary Lou, and son, Vincent. Our sympathies go out to her children,

Suzanne, Pamela, Bernadette, Gregory, Timothy, Felix, her many grandchildren & great

grandchildren, family and friends.

Adult Faith Opportunities for Prayer & Study

Bible Study :: meets every Tuesday at 1 PM in the upper meeting room of the Parish Center. New members are always welcome!

Spiritual Book Group :: has recessed for the summer. We will be reading Against the Infinite Horizon by Ronald Rolheiser over the summer. We will discuss this book when we resume in September.

Secular Franciscans :: on the second Sunday of the month after the 11 AM Mass in the dining room of the Parish Center. Would you like to know more about us? Please come to our meeting. Bring a bag lunch and we will supply the coffee. The next meeting will be in June.

Our Lady of the Hamptons

The all-new revitalized Pre-school program at OLH is an important step in

the over-all education of young children. Registration for the September

2015 year at the classes at St. Rosalie’s Parish Center in Hampton Bays is

now open. A fully licensed program for three and four year olds in preparation for elementary school

is available with flexible, extended hours. Call 283-9140 to arrange tours and interviews. Space is

limited.

Our Lady of the Hamptons, the East End’s premier Catholic school, chartered by the State of New

York, accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools is also recipient of a Blue

Ribbon for Excellence from the U.S. Department of Education. OLH serves parishes and communities

extending from Quogue to Montauk.

Information packets and registration materials are available at the school now, leading toward

Did you know... about Bernard Nathanson, MD, abortion proponent turned Pro-Life? Dr. Nathanson was a New York City

Obstetrician-Gynecologist who, in the 1960's, ran the largest freestanding abortion clinic in the world, and was a

founding member of the National Abortion Rights Action League, or NARAL. He presided over more than 60,000

abortions, doing thousands himself. In the late 1970's, in part because of the availability of improved ultrasound imaging,

he began to question the morality of his actions, and completely changed his mind, becoming an outspoken opponent of

abortion. He wrote extensively on the subject, including a book titled "The Hand of God: A Journey from Death to Life". In

1996, he converted from Judaism, and became Catholic, being Baptized by John Cardinal O'Connor. He always

emphasized that he came to Catholicism after he became convinced that abortion was wrong -- not because the Church

said so; he was attracted in great part because one could find forgiveness in the Catholic church. Dr. Nathanson died at

the age of 84, and was buried from St. Patrick's Cathedral, in New York City.

“Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” How often have we felt like the Apostles on that

turbulent sea? Things are going terribly. We’re frightened for our lives. And where is God? Oblivious

to our plight? All the Apostles had to do was wake Jesus up. He was right there for them, and he

quickly calmed the sea. He also questioned their faith. What can we draw from this scene? Certainly,

it may feel good to know we are not alone. The Apostles, Job, everyone throughout history has expe-

rienced very hard times and a sense of abandonment. What may be harder to remember is that God is

always with us. While we may not be able to solve our own problems, let alone the world’s, God-with

-us can. Our role is to have faith, to ask for help, and to be grateful when it comes. Then, perhaps, we

can extend that faith-filled help to others.
