To all those who fled to cooler climes during the traditional sum-mer months: welcome back.

You should notice a few changes:

• The wall is done. The final coat of paint has been applied and Hometown sponsored a Wall Par-ty for residents whose property borders the wall.

• Road sealing for Hometown’s Fiscal Year 2013 is completed; if your particular street doesn’t look newly done, it’s probably on the schedule for 2014.

• The Clubhouse spa is closed. The request for bids is out, but work has not yet begun.

• The golf course is all spruced up.

• The lakes are being treated; we’ve had to remind ourselves that they will look worse before they look better. Nevertheless, prettier times are coming.

• After several discussions with Lee County Sheriff’s Department representatives, we have decided to strengthen the Neighborhood Watch program itself, phasing out the Safety Patrol arm. You’ll hear more specifics at Tuesday Cof-fees.

Meanwhile, here are a few up-dates:

• Bids are still being taken for the dog park slated for an area ad-joining the north lake.

• The HOA has sent its Mem-orandum of Understanding to Hometown America committing to payment of half the cost for the purchase and installation of the digital sign. We are hopeful that it will be in use before the holiday season begins.

• To our great chagrin, we have not yet solved the problem of street signs that become invis-ible after dark. We’ve had an im-pressive number of suggestions; unfortunately not one of them is unproblematic. We have not, however, given up.

I had not anticipated that HOA’s most persistent and dif-ficult problems over the sum-mer would result—deliberately or accidentally-- from residents’ not following the rules. So may I take this opportunity to remind you of a few of the rules you have agreed to abide by:

• No one under the age of 18 is allowed in any of the pools af-ter 7:00 p.m. This means your grandchildren as well as everyone else’s.

• The speed limit is 16 mph. Late to tee or late to tea, it’s still 16 mph.

• Only the grill areas that are under cover at each of the pools may be reserved for private use. Proper paperwork must be filled out, rules for the percentage of outside guests and guest use of facilities must be followed, and under no circumstances whatso-ever may other Del Tura residents be obstructed from entering and fully enjoying the adjacent pool.

• Del Tura is an age-qualified community. In order to retain that designation, the federal regu-lations about who may and may not live here must be followed. That can result in some difficult and painful family situations, but it is not within Del Tura’s power to make exceptions.

We have openings for a num-

ber of volunteers who can assist in the social side of our com-munity’s life. For example, we need chairs for the Neighbor-hood Watch Committee, Trash & Treasures, the Craft Fair, and the Memorial Services committee. We’re planning a volunteer fair in November, but if you’re interest-ed in becoming part of one of our committees or groups, don’t wait. Call anyone on the HOA Board and we’ll connect you to the ap-propriate people.

Finally, I’m very happy to let you know that the newest member of the HOA Board, Mary White, has taken charge of all of the events relating to maintaining and improving our physical health. I think you will be delighted to see the schedule of events she has planned.

begin Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at Coffee Hour.

I will continue to collect the dues at each Coffee Hour thereaf-ter starting at 8:00 a.m., both be-fore the meeting, and immediately following the meeting.

Your dues for 2014 are due and payable prior December 31, 2013, as your 2013 dues expire on 12/31/13.

We’re usually back home by 2:00 p.m. to get ready for dinner. People start lining up for the early bird about 3:00 p.m., but we get there by 3:45 because we’re late eaters. The dinners are very popu-lar because of the large portions they serve. You can take home enough food for the next day’s lunch and dinner, including extra bread, crackers, packets of mus-tard, relish, ketchup and Sweet-and-Low along with mints.

Fifteen years ago my wife and I moved into a retirement develop-ment on Florida’s southeast coast. We are living in the Delray/Boca/Boynton Golf, Spa, Bath and Ten-nis Club on Lake Fake-a-hachee. There are 3000 lakes in Florida; only three are real.

The Roads are done! I would like to personally thank everyone for their help and understanding during the sealing project. We learned a lot from the process and have ideas on how to make this necessary inconvenience go smoother in the future. We have completed some other projects throughout the community as well. We have installed addition-al landscaping and up lighting on the palm tree at the entrance, re-placed all the benches at the shuf-fleboard courts, and the infamous wall is being finished as I type this article, just to name a few.

I would also like to thank the approximately forty hearty soles that attended our outdoor drive in movie last month. It was a little touch and go due to the weather but the weather did finally coop-erate and a good time was had by all (the movie wasn’t bad either). We are already planning our next one!

By now you’ve probably heard some of the hurricane season forecasts that scientists have re-leased. The specific number of named storms and hurricanes differ by agency, but the strong consensus is for a busy hurricane season across the Atlantic basin.

Some folks get very nervous when they hear a forecast for a busy season. You need to re-member that these predictions are for the millions of square miles

of ocean between Texas and the coast of Africa. They don’t say a thing about where these storms will go.

No matter what the prediction, you need to prepare for every hur-ricane season the same way. Have your hurricane supplies – have your evacuation game plan.

Being that September and October is the heart of the hurri-cane season; I would like to share some helpful website links in case we do have a storm.

Locally, NBC 2 http://www.nbc-2.com/weather is a great re-source for up to date local weath-er and news information as well as links to local, state and federal governmental agencies. NOAA is another good resource with a very user friendly web site. Their link is: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/

As I stated in my last article, the Clubhouses and Recreational buildings are NOT designated hurricane shelters and will be locked in the event of a storm. Please make sure you have a plan.

Finally, I would like to speak about home sales. Home sales are really starting to pick up and the prices seem to be actually in-

creasing as well. If you are sell-ing your home on your own, or have it listed with an outside broker, please make sure the pro-spective buyers come in and fill out the required applications and paperwork for acceptance to the community and as to not hold up any closings.

Lastly, I’m getting a lot of questions about the “New House” at #5202. This home is not a sold home but a model / spec house that will be for sale. If you would like to tour the home, need help in selling your home, or have friends interested in Del Tura, please contact Betty or Jack at the office at 239-731-3433. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk 2013

It’s time to start signing up for the 2013 walk. This years theme is celebrat-ing American Cancer Society 100th year. It is time to have fun and to enjoy being a member of our Del Tura Walkers. The Making Strides Walk will be at Tanger Outlet Center, 20350 Summerlin Road, Ft. Myers. This is our third year at this venue. We are in our seventh year so let’s make this year better then ever. If

r 1 3/4 cups Crushed Graham Cracker Crumbsr 1/4 cup Sugarr 1/2 cup Margarine, meltedr 8 oz. Cream Cheese, softenedr 2 Eggs, beaten

r 3/4 cup Sugarr 2 (3 3/4 oz) pkg. Instant Vanilla Puddingr 3/4 cup Milkr 2 cups Canned Pumpkinr 1/2 tsp. Cinnamonr 2 cups Cool Whip, divided and thawed.

Pumpkin Chiffon DessertWhen October rolls around one of the first food thoughts is “Pumpkin”.

Using a 13x9x2 inch pan, Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.

Combine cracker crumbs, 1/4 cup sugar and margarine. Press into the pan and set aside.Combine the cream cheese, eggs and 3/4 cup sugar, beat until fluffy. Spread over the crust in the pan and bake for 20 minutes at 350 degrees. Set aside to cool.Combine the pudding and milk. Beat two (2) minutes. add pumpkin and cinnamon. Mix well. Stir in one (1) cup whipped topping. spread over cream cheese layer. Spread the top with remaining cool whip topping. Sprinkle with chopped nuts if desired.

“A Wanted Man”By Lee Child Submitted by Eleanor Bergman

“A Wanted Man” is one of sev-enteen Jack Reacher thrillers by Lee Child.

Our hero has an exciting and charmed life, it seems. He is 6’5’’, a huge man, a West Point graduate and an ex-Army investigator. He has no home roots and travels with a credit card and toothbrush from one thrilling adventure to another.

As this book begins, Jack is on a main highway in Nebraska try-ing to hitchhike to Virginia. As usual, he looks a little ragged and unkempt, even more so as he has a bloody broken nose taped together with duck tape. There is never any explanation as to how he got the bloody nose or why he is trying to get to Virginia.

Why anyone would want to pick up such a person is question-able, but a car with two men and a woman pick him up, hoping to make Chicago by morning. One man is driving and the man sit-ting next to him is telling stories that don’t add up in Jack’s analyti-cal mind, and the woman in back is silent and appears nervous. An hour behind them a man is found stabbed to death in an old pump-ing station in a rural town. Some-

one saw three men going into the building, but only two came out. The police are called, but soon the FBI descends, claiming the body with no explanation as to who he might be.

Jack is soon asked to drive and agrees readily when he observes one of the men has a hidden gun. Somehow the lady in the back seat communicates with Jack through eye signals that the car is hers and she has been abducted. When they go through a road block, Jack knows he has hitched more than a ride. Soon he realizes he has involved himself in a massive conspiracy, making him a threat to both sides. With 100 mph car chases, people who are not what they seem, and a final shootout in a hidden terrorist hideaway, Jack re-solves the conspiracy for the FBI. We leave Jack on an eastbound highway ramp hitching a ride to Virginia, and to his next adventure.

This is an exciting read with many plot turns and makes the book hard to put down. Tom Cruise has starred in the movie, “Jack Reacher.” He makes a most credible hero in this action thriller.

2013 Summer Pancake Breakfast

We are so proud of all the volunteers for all their hard work that included cooking and serving 25 pounds of bacon, 240 sau-sage patties and 40 pounds of pancake mix. This was the largest Summer breakfast. 128 people purchased tickets.

The hard work paid off with $493.55 be-ing made on the breakfast after all our ex-penses were paid.

Our 2013-2014 season of Del Tura Bingo is going to be starting on October 10,2013, in the Starlight Ballroom. (See attached schedule)

It will be just a little different this year. Along with Erv and Linda Storma, Linda Schoonmaker is join-ing the leadership team. These 3 vol-unteers will be the callers for bingo as well as many other duties.

We have volunteers set up for staffing the positions needed, and of course we’ll make sure John Bilan-cio has coffee and cookies available as well as the horserace.

Some changes this year: Bingo sales will start at 6:00 pm and will close at 6:45 p.m. No sales after that time. The games will start at 7:00 pm sharp. We will again have HOT BALL, but there may be 2 or 3 dif-ferent numbers with their own prize money as the weeks progress rather than just 1 larger prize.

One more change...yes, we will be able to adjust the temperature this year. Jim, the Hometown manager, has given a key to the Rover and we can call the gate to have the air/heat regulated! Thank you Jim!!!

We will be collecting food for those less fortunate again and you will get extra bonus cards for bring-

ing in non-perishables. You would be able to play every game for as little as $10. Please join us on Thursday nights and bring your friends! Thank you and see you there!

My wife goes directly to the pool for her under water Pilates class, followed by gasping for breath and CPR. I put on my “Ask me about my Grandchildren” T-shirt, my plaid mid-calf shorts, my black socks and sandals and go to the club house lobby for a nice nap.

Before you know it, it’s time for lunch. We go to Costco to partake of the many tasty sam-ples dispensed by ladies in white hair nets. All free! After a filling lunch, if we don’t have any doc-tor appointments, we might go to the flea market to see if any new white belts have come in or to buy a Rolex watch for $2.00.

I would like to introduce myself. I am Mary White, HOA Director/Health and Wellness Coordinator for Del Tura. I am looking forward to representing you in making Del Tura the healthiest community in SW Florida.

I am in the process of lining up speakers for our 2013/2014 season. I am asking for suggestions on speakers and specialties that you would like to hear. I will do all I can to accommodate your needs and wishes. Please contact me after Coffee or at 307-631-5924.

Speakers at Coffee Hour in October are: Maribel Cook with RX Acology. Ms. Cook will be speaking on October 15, on the importance of medication adherence. Bob Ber-man will speak on the ABC’s of Mobile Home Insurance on Oct. 22, Dr. Magnant with the Vein Specialist will speak in three installments beginning Oct. 29, Dec. 3 and Feb. 25 on vein health. RX Acology and the Vein Specialist will be represented at our Health Fair.

Please mark your calendar for January 22, 2014 for our annual Health and Wellness Fair. This will be a fun and in-formative time with numerous specialties represented.

The Annual Vendors Craft Fair For Charity

community, The Del Tura HOA supports a Vendors Craft Fair for Charity each November. The pro-ceeds from the Fair are donated to local charities.

Last year the Craft Fair cel-ebrated its 25th year. I am the Craft Fair Coordinator, my name is June Malonson. I took over the operation of the Craft Fair four years ago and I am proud to say our Fair is one of the most sought after Craft Fairs in the area.

There will be a Raffle associ-ated with the Fair; ticket sales and viewing of the prizes will be held two weeks prior, at Coffee, and during the Fair. The Raffle drawing will be held at 12:30

p.m., Saturday, Nov. 2. You do not have to be present to win. We will be pleased to accept any do-nations of handmade items for the Raffle Table. You do not have to be a vendor to donate; however, it is requested that our vendors donate a small item handmade by them for our Raffle. There will be a vendors’ meeting on October 23, 2013, table payment will be expected and items for the Raffle will be accepted at that time.

Attention Neighborhood Watch and Safety Patrol Members

As of July 2013, the Del Tura Safety Patrol Pro-gram was discontinued. Please remove your Safety Patrol sign from your golf carts, they are no longer needed.

I would like to thank all of you who participated in our Safety Patrol Program. I would not have been able to do it without your help. I want to especially thank Linda Storma who started the Neighborhood Watch and Safety Patrol program over six years ago, also Eddy Highfield who took over for two years while I served on the Board of Directors. I then took it over after Eddy took ill and with the help of Linda Storma taking care of my computerized member ros-

ters made it easier for me, with all your help, to keep Del Tura a safe place for us to live in.

There is still a Neighborhood Watch Program. It’s just a matter of all of us looking out for each other’s homes and neighbors.

If you see something that is not quite what it should be, call The Sheriff’s Office at 477-1000. If it is a matter of life or death, call 911.

Again, it has been an honor and a privilege to have served as your Neighborhood Watch and Safety Patrol Chairperson. Thank you all.

featured our HOA Board mem-bers in this paper there were two positions vacant. Thankfully two Del Turians stepped forward to join the ranks of this important group.

MARY WHITE of San Luis Drive was appointed to the po-sition of Director and will be in charge of Health and Wellness ac-tivities. Mary was born in Raton, NM and came to Florida by way of Wyoming. How many resi-dents do we have here from either of these states?

Mary graduated from McAr-thur HS in Hollywood, FL before attending Miami Dade Communi-ty College and moved to Del Tura with her husband Ed in 2012. She and Ed have been married for for-ty-six years and have three daugh-ters and six granddaughters.

She managed the outpatient clinic for Converse County Me-morial Hospital in Douglas, WY for a number of years. The 22-bed hospital serviced three coun-ties. Mary would assist the spe-cialist that came into town. In 2001 her husband was transferred to Fort Lauderdale and she went to work for the Orthopedic Cen-ter of South Florida. Then he was transferred again this time to Ari-zona and she worked as a surgery coordinator for Lakeside Ortho-pedics in Lake Havasu City, AZ.

Even in the relatively short time Mary has lived in our com-munity she has become active by serving on the Entertainment Committee and in CERT (Com-munity Emergency Response Team). She is currently in charge of our Health Fair, which will be held on January 22, 2014 and is seeking suggestions for partici-pants for that event.

GAIL VENTURA who lives on Tierra Entrada graciously ac-cepted the appointment as Secre-tary to the HOA Board to finish the term of Betty Wright who left to live in Texas. Gail was born and grew up in Arlington, MA. She moved from Topsfield, MA known as the Home of the Old-est Country Fair in the Country to Del Tura in 2011. Gail taught in the Arlington, MA and Wa-tertown, MA school districts for

many years and then also worked for an educational company in Rowley, MA.

Gail bought her house in Del Tura in 2008 and moved here full-time in 2011. An avid golfer, Gail is now serving as Treasurer of the Nine-Hole Women’s Golf League and is also an active member of FISH.

We are so thankful that these two well-qualified women have agreed to serve our HOA and work for the betterment of our community.

Thanks to Lyn Bailey and Kath-leen Quigley for the role they played in making this “grillin’ and chillin’” event a success.

We want to give a shout-out to our member Alice Harris and the entire Wall Committee for their dedication and persistence regarding that proj-ect. We truly appreciate your efforts on all our behalves. Alice is recuper-ating well from her recent knee re-placement, and she and Peg traveled to Orange, Mass. in August to attend the town’s 150th anniversary celebra-tion. We are sure their presence added to the festivities. Cathy Wallace con-tinues to recover from several health issues and is now residing at Calusa Harbour. We are very happy that she is nearby so that we can visit her. Cathy was a loyal Good Timer and a dedicated Entertainment Commit-tee Chairperson, having a great sense of humor and being a caring person, qualities that make her a wonderful friend.

New members are welcome to join the Good Timers throughout the year. If you are interested in join-ing, contact Membership Co-chair-persons, Pat Clemens (567-0716) or Lyn Bailey (543-9020). You are also welcome to attend one of our monthly meetings, without obligation to join, on the first Tuesday of each month at 5 p.m. in the Poinciana Ballroom. Follow This Plan to Avoid Being Scammed

As the peak of hurricane season quickly closes in on Southwest Florida, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office reminds

residents what to look for and how to stay away from some of the most common scams and frauds that may occur after a

natural disaster. When preparing your hurricane survival kit this year, don’t forget to include these very important “post-

hurricane” safety and security tips to avoid being taken advantage of by con-artists who love to prey on disaster victims:

Identity Thieves – Inclement weather may force you to abandon your home due to flooding and wind, leaving your personal items vulnerable to being scattered around town. Now is the time to shred sensitive information and place items such as your social security card, birth certificate and passport in a secured, water-proof container. If you are forced to relocate from your home, be sure to contact your local post office as soon as possible to either forward your mail or place it on hold as identity thieves have been known to collect information from abandoned houses.

Dishonest contractors – If you have property damage you will most likely want to have it repaired as quickly as possible so you can regain a sense of normalcy. This mindset can leave you vulnerable to fly-by-night contractors looking to make a quick buck. Beware of high price temporary repairs, a request for a large cash deposit, or pushy salesmen. If at all possible it is always best to get at least three written estimates by contractors who have roots in the local community.

Fraudulent representation of FEMA – After a disaster, you may encounter someone who claims to be a FEMA representative. Beware of phone calls and individuals who go door-to-door asking for your social security and/or bank account numbers, FEMA registration number or other sensitive material. Our biggest retirement concern was time management. What were we going to do all day? Let me as-sure you, passing the time is not a problem. Your days will be eaten up by simple, daily activities. Just getting out of your car takes 15 minutes. Trying to find where you parked takes 20 minutes. It takes 1/2 hour on the check-out line in Wal-Mart and 1 hour to return the item the next day.

Let me take you through a typi-

cal day. We get up at 5:00 a.m., have a quick breakfast and join the early morning Walk and Talk Club. There are about 30 of us, and rain or shine we walk around the streets, all talking at once. Ev-ery development has some late risers who stay in bed until 6:00 a.m. After a nimble walk avoiding irate drivers out to make us road kill, we go back home, shower and change for the next activity.

Can “Excess” Retirement Dollars Help Your Grandchildren? National Grandparents Day is observed on Sept. 8. And although this “Day” is not as widely known as Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, it does remind us of the importance of grandparents. If you’re a grandparent yourself, you may be thinking of ways to help your grandchildren on their journey through life. One of the greatest gifts you can give them may be financial support for their college education — and one way you can help provide this support could be found in the distributions you receive from your retirement accounts.

To understand how this technique might work, you’ll need to be familiar with the required minimum distribution (RMD) rules governing various retire-ment accounts. Actually, they’re pretty straightforward: Once you turn 70½, you’ll generally have to start taking withdrawals from your traditional IRA and your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan — such as a 457(b) plan, if you work for a state or local government, or a 403(b) plan, if you work for an educational institutions or nonprofit group. (If you have a Roth IRA, you are not required to take withdrawals at any age.)Your required minimum distribution is calculated by dividing the prior Dec. 31 balance of your retirement account by a life expectancy factor published by the Internal Revenue Service. As the word “minimum” suggests, you can take out more than this amount, but not less.

You can use the money you withdraw for any purpose you choose. It may be that you need all of it to help support your retirement lifestyle. But if you have enough money coming in from other sources — such as Social Security and any investments held outside your retirement accounts — you may find that you don’t really need to use every dollar from your RMDs. And if that’s the situation, you might want to devote some of this money to a college fund for your grandchildren.

Or you could simply give the funds to your grandchildren’s parents and let them decide how best to employ it for college. But you do have other options. For example, you could establish a 529 plan and name your grandchildren as beneficiaries.

With a 529 plan, any potential earnings accumulate tax free, provided they are used for qualified higher education expenses. (Keep in mind, though, that 529 plan distributions not used for qualified expenses may be subject to federal and state income tax and a 10% IRS penalty.) Furthermore, your 529 plan contributions may be deductible from your state taxes if you participate in your home state’s plan. However, 529 plans vary, so check with your tax advi-sor regarding deductibility.

In all likelihood, you’ll be able to contribute as much as you want to a 529 plan, because the lifetime contribution limits are generous — although these limits vary by state. Plus, a 529 plan is flexible: If your grandchild decides against an eligible college or vocational school, you can generally transfer the unused funds to an eligible family member.

A 529 plan is not the only college savings vehicle available to help your grandchildren; for other possibilities, you may want to consult with your financial advisor.

In any case, once you start taking your RMDs from your retirement accounts, think about putting any “excess” amounts to work for your grandchildren’s college education. Your generosity could provide benefits for a lifetime.

The Del Tura entertainment season is about to begin! The curtain will rise for the open-ing event, our annual Halloween Dance and Party on October 26 at 7:00 p.m. Those participating in the parade are requested to sign in at 6:30 p.m. We are very pleased to present a Del Tura favorite, Greg Miller and his band to pro-vide the music for this fun-filled evening. Greg has performed at a Del Tura golf banquet and re-ceived very positive feedback.

He has also appeared locally at Anthony’s on the Boulevard, the Firehouse Grill and Lake Fair-ways. Although it is not manda-tory to dress in costume, we urge you to do so and join in the Hal-loween Parade in the Starlight Ballroom before the dance be-gins. Prizes will be given in sev-eral categories, and the ballroom will be decorated Halloween ap-propriate. BYOB and snacks, and prepare to party and dance the night away. Ticket sales be-gin on Tuesday, October 8, at 7:30 a.m in the Starlight Ball-room. The first day of sales is for HOA members only. Tickets will also be sold Tuesday, October 15 and Tuesday, October 22 at 7:30 a.m. in the Starlight Ballroom. Sales are open on these dates for all Del Turians. The cost is $8.00 per person. “Expectation vs. Reality”By: Dianne J. Roderick

How do we as individuals handle our expectations and the actual realities of our dreams, or plans? What determines our re-actions when our expectations don’t equal the final outcomes? I guess everyone is different - but in many ways the same. So many factors come into play when we are faced with the true realities of everyday life. Simple disap-pointments, sometimes defined as trivial can trigger different emo-tions when compared to the big-ger problems that life presents us with as we travel through this life-long journey.

For example, a recipe that fails can be upsetting, but when we compare it to the illness of a loved one it becomes extremely trivial. Yet we allow ourselves to react to a cake that doesn’t rise, or cookies that burn like it was a matter of life and death….Why? We need to allow ourselves to make mis-takes, learn from our experiences, and save our energy for the bigger stress factors in our lives. I know, easier said than done! It is some-thing that we all need to work on constantly. Life-long lessons are never easy!

In one day I have managed to

burn banana bread, annihilate a meatloaf, and scorch two of my fingers. All of this and I hadn’t even left the house yet! Was I emotional? Did I cry? Did I call myself an imbecile? Yes, to all of the above! Why? I’m post menopausal, retired with plenty of time to not rush, or stress over these things. I’m sure many of us can relate to this type of day. We all have days like this and thank God that they are not all consis-tent. Each day gives us a fresh clean slate and allows us to go forth with a new positive outlook. So we try again and live with the belief that the most meaningful things in life are not the ones that are material, or the ones that de-pend on our abilities to be perfect cooks. Most important are the people that we are doing these things for!

How about those trips that we have all planned over the years? Which ones were the most en-joyable, or the most memorable? Everyone knows that plans have to be made - but sometimes we think that each hour of every day has to include a planned activity. How many of those planned days left us so exhausted that we went through the motions of the fol-lowing day exhausted and dazed?

Why do we think everything has to be rigidly planned? We all know that we have to schedule our days but within that schedule we need to leave some time to let the moments come to us and enjoy the outcome. In doing so, you may be pleasantly surprised!

Recently as I listened to our adult children reminisce about their childhood years (sometimes exaggerated to say the least) it re-minded me once again of the sim-ple things- and how the unplanned moments of our lives are the most memorable. Realizing the impor-tance of their words I decided to take the time this summer to really try and practice the art of staying calm, just kicking back, enjoy-ing the wonders that our daily lives surround us with. Listening to their stories reminded me of my childhood years and how my friends and I would embrace the magical moments. Never thinking that everything had to have a plan, just letting it happen gave us the happiest of days... We were just enjoying the carefree days of our youth without expectations. Is it possible at this stage of our lives to really enjoy some of those laid back - “hazy crazy days of sum-mer” – the ones without planned expectations, but with outcomes that leave us laughing and smiling at the end of each day? I think so!

I’ve learned a few lessons this summer but I think the most im-portant lesson of all for me is that I do not have to get it right 100% of the time. I’ve learned to throw the burnt food out and open a can of soup. In reality, the most important thing is to spend time with the ones you love - they don’t care if you’ve burned dinner!

Finally, putting our energy into the things that really matter allows us to spend more pleasant times together with family and friends. When we make the decision to ap-proach things positively, and not put pressure on ourselves to per-fect every situation we are in most instances pleasantly surprised by the outcome.

New Prospect Chapter #1475 of The Questers completed its third year and its members are looking forward to a busy 2013-14 sea-son. The Questers are part of an international organization whose members are interested in study-ing about antiques and preserv-ing historical landmarks. Last year the New Prospect Questers found and had restored a 1930s refrigerator complete with a top compressor unit, which they pre-sented to the historic Burroughs Home in downtown Fort Myers for their newly renovated period kitchen. The chapter applied for and received a $500 grant from the Florida State Questers to help pay for this project.

Last year the members attended two state conferences and sponsored a lo-cal area meeting at Fisherman’s Village where Mary Richardson gave a presentation on the His-tory of Handkerchiefs. They also had programs on wedding gowns, Hummels, Civil War Ancestors, and made field trips to the Sanibel

Historical Museum and the Mound House on Fort Myers Beach. Three of the members attended the International Convention held in Rogers, AK last May. The pic-ture shows several of the Questers with our “new” refrigerator.

Friday Shuffleboard League

so I don’t forget to get it in for the October Tower. Another week and it will be September already. As I look back, the summer has gone by quickly but I also will say, we are looking forward to our return home to beautiful Del Tura.

Now back to some news about shuffleboard. We are looking for-ward to starting our Friday League again this fall. This will be my 9th year as team captain so it will be Janet’s and my job to get things ready to start another season. That means contacting all of last sea-sons team members to make sure you are all going to play in the 2013-2014 season. After we estab-lish that, new schedules will need to be made up and printed along with a new league roster including current phone numbers. We run a league comprised of 20 teams. I know we have people interested in joining our league so once we get confirmation as to who is re-turning and who is dropping out,

then, if we have openings, I will contact those people who are in-terested in joining and give them an opportunity to join our league. As always, subs are a very impor-tant part of our league and we al-ways have a great need for people who would rather be a sub than a regular. There isn’t a week that goes by that we don’t have a need for subs. Anyone interested in be-ing on a team or a sub, please con-tact Janet or myself by phone. Our local number is 239-731-0892 and we do have an answering machine so if we aren’t home, please leave a message and we will return your call. Janet and I plan on arriving in Del Tura on Oct. 6, and it would be greatly helpful for league mem-bers to call us as soon as possible after the 6th to let us know if you will be playing again this season. That would save us a lot of calling all of you. We plan on starting the season on Friday, November 1.

Every day another house is oc-cupied and another golfer joins us on Thursday. We are certainly glad to have you all back. While members were away the courses received attention and much needed rest. Happily, starting on Sept. 9, the three courses were opened again. It is now time for the many fall events to begin.

Many of our members enjoy visiting other courses during sea-son for LEGA and Invitational events. This fall we hosted one of each at Del Tura. The LEGA event took place September 13, the Invitational is October 3. Lynne Miller organized the In-vitational around the theme of “A Time for Golf”. Besides the tournament itself there will be gift baskets to win. Each basket contains items representing the different cities our members are from.

November and December are especially busy. Mark your cal-endars for the following:

The Club Championship: No-vember 14, 20 and 21.

Member-Member: December 11 and 12.

The Awards Banquet: Decem-ber 6.

Christmas Luncheon: Decem-ber 19.In addition, now that more of us have returned, the Pro Shop will have a Demo Day in late Oc-tober and Ryan will offer clinics on Wednesdays. Watch for an-nouncements in the Pro Shop or the Dungeon.

What happens when you have a wild shot and yell “Fore”? Have you done all you can and therefore are off the hook? Not exactly!! According to Bill Pen-nington in a New York Times article (June 24, 2013) if you hit someone who is standing near the green, for example, (moving a little too slow for you and you hit before they drive away) you are liable and could find your-self in court. Because we have so many par 3s and play slows down on busy days and because many players will say I can’t hit that far, they will tee up and hit too soon. While we would hope the players in front of us would delay telling jokes, doing scoring and

making dinner plans until they reach the next hole, we all know that does not always happen. So, take a deep breath and tell your own joke when fellow members appear to linger. Courts have ruled we are not responsible for errant shots (still should pay for that window!) but if the golfer is in “your line of fire” then it is not an accident!!

Doctor related activities eat up most of your retirement time. I enjoy reading old magazines in sub-zero temperatures in the waiting room, so I don’t mind. Calling for test results also helps the days fly by. It takes at least half an hour just getting through the doctor’s phone menu. Then there’s the hold time until you’re connected to the right party. Sometimes they forget you’re holding, and the whole office goes off to lunch.

Should you find you still have time on your hands, volunteering provides a rewarding op-portunity to help the less fortunate. Florida has the largest concentration of seniors under five feet and they need our help. I myself am a volunteer for “The Vertically Challenged Over 80”, I coach their basketball team, The Arthritic Avengers. The hoop is only 4 1/2 feet from the floor. You should see the look of confidence on their faces when they make a slam dunk.

Food shopping is a problem for short seniors or “bottom feeders” as we call them because they can’t reach the items on the upper shelves. There are many foods they’ve never tasted. After shopping, most seniors can’t remember where they parked their cars and wander the parking lot for hours while their food defrosts.

Lastly, it’s important to choose a develop-ment with an impressive name. Italian names are very popular in Florida. They convey world traveler, uppity sophistication and wealth. Where would you rather live... Murray’s Con-dos or the Lakes Of Venice ? There’s no dif-ference. They’re both owned by Murray who happens to be a real cheap guy.

BILLING! Something many of us wanted for a very long time.

2nd - They saved each and ev-ery homeowner $1,339.29!!! That is what Hometown billed each one of us. But your HOA Board stopped them in their tracks and told you NOT TO PAY IT. And then the Committee started getting to work on a solution.

3rd - Long, long story very short...we have the wall and except for some minor cosmetic fixes, IT IS NOW FINALLY COMPLETE!

Del Turian residents are VERY LUCKY to have such caring in-dividuals to watch out for us. If you see one of them, please take a second to thank them for their hard work.

DEL TURA Summer News From the Ceramic Room

We all hope everyone has had a great summer in Del Tura and have stayed busy despite the heat and rain. And for those of us who trav-eled North, we welcome you back to Paradise. Over the summer months, many more projects were brought into the classroom and a good num-ber of new members have enjoyed working on them. Our membership has grown so much over the last months that we are running out of seats. It’s a great group of people and we hope to see more of you in the fall.

This year, we will be taking part in the November Bazaar. People are always asking us what projects we have and how would they look fin-ished. So, we will have two tables showing pieces for the Thanksgiv-ing and Christmas Holidays. There will be turkey platters, napkin rings, Christmas dishes and trees, etc. Of course all of our work will be for sale and we will be taking orders if some pieces should sell out and even for custom made pieces. And, we will have some really great items for raffles. Hope we have a great turn-

out at our tables.Our program for kid’s projects

has been super successful. We were really pleased to see all of those grandchildren having a good time painting. Because we had so many little ones and some teens too, we will be sure to restock with even more projects for the Holiday visits. All pieces including instruc-tion, paints, brushes, etc. are only $5.00 each. Come in and see some of the cool things we have for your grandchildren.

We are planning another seminar for those of you who want to “TRY BEFORE YOU BUY’ to see if you would like spending some time doing Ceramics. Also we are con-templating having a porcelain doll class. Let us know what you think.

We would love for you to drop by our room and ask any questions or just stay and watch for a while. If you need any additional informa-tion, please call our President, Janet Ragone at 543-7818. See you soon.

The Welcome Committee sponsored a get-together for the new residents on Tuesday, August 13, 2013, in the Fountain Grille Restaurant. Erv Storma took pictures and everyone enjoyed the light refreshments, cake, and soft drinks served by Nick Matarrese, owner of the restaurant. The lineup of speakers explained amenities available to residents as well as the importance of volunteering in Del Tura. Jim Marlow explained his position as the Community Manager; Donna Burns Phillips provided information about the HOA; Linda Storma explained the function of FMO; Sue Symes dis-cussed the FISH program, and Marlene DeGraaf introduced a package of activities provided by volunteers residing in Del Tura. Speakers explained how to join the tennis and the golf leagues. Denny Erickson explained the tennis programs while Don Soper, Jack Riordan, Lynn Miller and Marianne Denman provided information about the golf leagues. Many questions were asked and answered.

Paul Taggart, Director of Golf, provided a certificate for a round of golf for four people. We raffled off gift certificates for a free haircut from TK’s Hair Design, two $25.00 gift certificates for the restaurant and pub, and a large bag of gifts from FISH. Everyone was given a Del Tura tote bag contain-ing a HOA handbook, information about FMO and an activ-ity folder.

Two of the new residents became volunteers for FISH and two men joined the Nine-Hole Men’s Golf League. Others discussed their willingness to share their talents with our community.
