1. INNOVAT CURSO DE PREPARACIÓN – PREPARATION
1.1. THE COURSE-OBJECTIVE
The InnovaT Course of Preparation objective was to ensure a common understanding of the E-
Learning environment by providing an online preparation course where the target groups would get
a first grip to digital learning. It was thought to set the ground and the learning groups for the next
training phases and engage active participation of stakeholders. Its aim was to support the
stakeholders to “step in” the world digital education as well as to understand the benefits of MOOC
and digital learning for their teaching and learning.
As an extension to the World Cafés that took place during the Raise Awareness Seminars, it gave the
participants the possibility to discuss the topics addressed more in depth, while leaving room for
emergent topics on innovation in teaching and learning.
1.2. TARGET GROUPS
The target groups were teachers and students in a total number of 180 participants (90 from each
target group) from at least 2 different institutes/departments/disciplines of the 6 partner universities
in Chile and Peru.
1.3. PLATFORM
The platform used for the course was the Moodle platform of FH JOANNEUM. https://vc-training.fh-
joanneum.at/neu/course/view.php?id=16
The InnovaT participants were added to the platform and once they arrived successfully in the platform
the moderator was online to welcome and get in touch with them.
The platform was successfully used to share knowledge, needs, motivation and concerns in the topics
addressed and discussed.
1.4. CONCEPT
The training was based on the concept of Gilly Salmon - five stage model of online learning groups
and the etivities framework for enabling active and participative online learning by individuals and
group:
Stage 1: Access and motivation
Stage 2: Online Socialization
Stage 3: Information exchange
5
Innovat – Project No. 598758-EPP-1-2018-1-AT-EPPKA2-CBHE-JP
Stage 4: Knowledge construction
Stage 5: Development
It structures the learning process and supports exchange between participants and engagement.
The language of the training, as well as the learning environment was Spanish. Nevertheless, there is
also learning material in English, but the key texts were in Spanish.
As more than 200 persons participated in the training the course started with tasks for groups of
teachers and students from the same university.
1.5. MODERATOR
The course was developed by Jutta Pauschenwein, an experienced moderator of online groups. She is
responsible for the building of online groups in some study programs of FH JOANNEUM and supports
online learning processes for students’ and teachers’ groups. In cooperation with FH JOANNEUM
colleagues she has developed several MOOCs and was responsible of moderating these MOOCs.
Jutta developed the course in Spanish, based on her knowledge of Spanish, with help of the Spanish
speaking partners - created videos and communicated with the course participants in Spanish as well.
Therefore, the references to the course and the screenshots are in Spanish, embedded in short
explanations in English.
The feedback of the InnovaT partners was also included into the course concept.
1.6. EVALUATION CRITERIA
Learners were expected to invest about 20-30 hours in the course – asynchronously- which meant
contributing and/or entering the course could have been done at any convenient time.
A Participation Certificate will be issued to the participants who have contributed/interacted at least
once, stating their participation. To the outstanding contributions a certificate with 1 ECTS, stating
their 20-30 hours commitment and contribution, will be attributed, given that they have completed
all the tasks:
Students/Teachers Needs & Motivations Survey (Stages 1&2)
(at least) 1 contribution on Stages 1&2
(at least) 1 contribution on Stages 3&4
All tasks on Stage 5 (Reflexion on the Course + E-learning Quality Survey)

2. IMPLEMENTATION
2.1. INTRODUCTION
During the realization of the Raise Awareness Seminars at the 6 Partner universities (15 students and
15 teachers of each university) in Peru and Chile, the Innovat Preparation Course was presented –
the first step to share ideas, suggestions and concern regarding innovation in learning and teaching.
Topics were proposed, added to the ones that were discussed at the RA Seminars “World Café´s”,
and new topics were welcomed to join in the discussion.
Support and guidance were given on the first stage as well as a first insight to the course. The
concept, based on the five stage model of Gilly Salmon was explained and detailed instructions were
given as to how to access the platform and how it was going to run. The moderator was also
introduced.
Participants were made aware of the what was expected in terms of length of the course,
participation, tasks and certificate attribution. At this point the activities and discussions took place
ONLY within their own institution – at a later stage will interact with all partner universities within
the course.
For the log-in, each participant received:
Link to the Virtual Platform vc-training.fh-joanneum.at/neu
User name & Password
Once they had access to the platform, personal data had to be inserted and when all was confirmed
the participants started their journey in the Innovat Preparation Course.
The course in the platform starts with material of introduction, the possibility to say “hello” and
interact with the moderator, on real time, for the first time. There were sections prepared for each
university.

2.2. STAGES 1&2 ACCESS AND MOTIVATION
Each university had its own chapter in the platform and there were individual videos for every
university, at the initial stages.
Here the participants had the opportunity to be welcomed on video by the moderator.
Once again was emphasized the importance of completing the survey and the first interactions began
by sharing the participant’s motivation on joining the course.
During the phase of online socialisation, the participants practiced to access the platform, in order to
contribute to the online discussions and to get to know each other.
These activities took place as group discussion between participants from the same university. By
doing so teachers and students learned what is happening at their universities.
The materials were texts, discussion forums, pictures, videos, pdfs, links.
After this first phase – stages 1 and 2 – all participants started to discuss together.

2.3. STAGE 3 INFORMATION EXCHANGE
During this stage, based on the results from the previous stages, the participants shared information
about their knowledge, their competences with respect to innovative learning and teaching scenarios
and other topics which were emerging form the discussions – it was an exchange in the whole group.
At this point all participants of the course were able to discuss with each other. There were several discussions forums available based on the discussions in the stages 1 & 2. For example, about:
learning platforms
useful tools
online pedagogy and didactics
MOOCs
privacy and data
strategy and evaluation
training concepts and other topics
The participants could choose where to contribute.
The tasks in stage 3 were also explained in a video and there was the possibility for participants to
share their own documents and concepts.

2.4. STAGES 4&5 KNOWLEDGE CONSTRUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT
In the last stages some topics emerged in which the participants deepened their knowledge. In
groups they checked the material provided by the project group and the other participants.
At the end the participants reflected on the course.
Continually there were discussions in the forums and Moodle platform showed the participants the
new contributions to motivate them to come back to the forum and join the discussion again.
As the end of the course was approaching, the participants were invited to complete a survey on the
quality of the E-learning Course. Video of the invitation and link were provided on the platform.

The interaction started by saying Hello to the Moderator and from then on it evolved to posting of
pictures, videos (from some of the participants) to the continuation of the discussion of the topics
addressed in the World Cafés which took place in each of the Universities that held the Raise
Awareness Seminars.
Ground was set for the next stage.
4.1.3 CONTRIBUTION STAGE 3
On this stage the discussions were more in depth and participants were more involved and active. A
sample of a forum interaction presented below, were participants from all universities have been
active. The graph shows the number of contributions per participant during the discussion about
“Other Online Tools”.
It is noticeable that the interaction/contribution at this stage as well as the number of participants is
well representative. The participants were more engaged and the discussions at forums were
developing on a daily basis. The number of contributions has, in some cases, been above 20. A
significant number of participants has, on the other hand, less than 5 contributions

4.1.3 CONTRIBUTION STAGES 4&5
On stages 4&5 the debates intensified and, as mentioned previously, several topics have been
addressed, all of which derived a number of materials and documents that all participants have
access to. Knowledge sharing and development was successfully achieved- well represented by the
materials and outcomes of the reflection stage.
Above a general overview of the contribution on Stage 5 (Reflexión). A fair amount of reflections was
shared (which will be mentioned in the next chapter).
4.1.4 SURVEY E-LEARNING QUALITY (NUMBERS):
A survey on the quality of the E-learning course was elaborated. 54 answers were given to a survey
with 8 questions where the participants were requested to evaluate the E-learning course in terms
of, for example, its general structure, work methodology, usefulness of the course, etc:

The results were extremely positive, as they show that the course was evaluated in all of its related
questions as very good (muy bueno/a) or very much (bastante)- always above 80%.
There is obviously place for improvement, and that cannot be forgotten, namely on how user-
friendly the platform was and the level of discussion and interaction of the participants.
Nevertheless, the results were positive and demonstrate that the participants were satisfied with the
E-learning Course.
4.2. QUALITATIVE
4.2.1 SURVEY E-LEARNING QUALITY
There was also an open question, on the Survey, where participants could ass considerations or
comments to the Course. Although for a number of participants the E-learning course was easy to
follow and to access, there were some participants who would have needed more guidance, and
support throughout the course. There were also the resources component, as not all participants were
able to access at anytime, anywhere.
However, the majority of the participants, really appreciate the opportunity to join the E-learning
course, especially the interaction with peers of other countries.

4.2.2 REFLECTION (STAGE 5)
At the end of the course the participants were invited to reflect on:
what they have learned
what will be their further development?
The moderator/convener Jutta Pauschenwein clustered the contributions and summarized them, as
follows (as contributions were made in they were transcribed in the original language):
4.2.2.1 EXCHANGE WITHIN MY UNIVERSITY
Some participants wrote that it was important for them to start only in their university group and to
get to know better what is happening in their university. Time was also mentioned as an important
factor in terms of interaction on the discussions.
23
Innovat – Project No. 598758-EPP-1-2018-1-AT-EPPKA2-CBHE-JP
4.2.2.2 ONLINE EXCHANGE BETWEEN UNIVERSITIES
The participants appreciated the online exchange with people from the other universities.

4.2.2.3 THE STUDENTS IN THE COURSE

4.2.2.4 FEEDBACK TO THE MODEL OF GILLY SALMON
There was some criticism of the use of Gilly Salmon’s model (5 Stages), but also a lot of positive
feedback.

4.2.2.5 FEEDBACK TO THE COURSE
The course design was discussed very intensively in the final reflexion. One part of the participants
appreciated the open approach and that it was possible to learn together and profit from the
experiences of the other participants. They acknowledged the works and support of the moderator.
Other participants expected a different kind of course with less exchange and more expert opinion
and content.

No obstante
No aprendí
dichos temas propuestos y aprender mucha información nueva”

4.2.2.6 DISCUSSION ABOUT MOOCS REFLECTION
The participants were curious to know more about MOOCs and some of them already had experience with this type of online learning.

4.2.2.8 POSSIBILITIES OF FURTHER DEVELOPMENT

continue and what should be done, individually and strategically.

5. CONCLUSIONS
The Innovat Preparation course (E-learning course) was thought out as a first step into digital
learning. Even though the course has run with no major problems still some setbacks and obstacles
were found on the Journey.
The level of engagement and interest was way beyond expected and the participants followed the
course with excitement. However, sometimes the difficulty on having internet access might have
influenced the results. Unfortunately, not all participants had access to the course, at all time. This
was one of the main constraints.
Even though the general perception and outcome of the E-learning course is positive, there is always
room for improvement. Innovation and digital learning should not be seen as something to avoid or
fear. In that sense InnovaT preparation course was able to show that the digital tools can/should be
seen as an allied not an enemy. It is challenging, it is (sometimes) hard work, but it is also something
that the students long for, as they “demand” more intervention on the educative process.
The major step was to perceive whether the students and teachers were willing to do so, i.e, engage
in this expedition with InnovaT, and that was positively confirmed.
Materials have been shared, content generated and discussions actively took place.
In conclusion the results and the evaluation show that the E-learning course was satisfying and
helpful for almost every participant.
There are only some points that could be improved or added, such as the time span for the
completion of the tasks; some participants wanted to have even more interaction with the
moderator; some wanted/needed more guidance and support.
Overall the participants feel they have profited and learned a lot, through the shared experiences, as
they perceived that they increased the knowledge in digital learning.
They are more aware of the available tools and fell now more comfortable in using the learning
methods taught in the course.
