    •  Optional ultrasonic platens and unsaturatedtesting

    •   Automatic tilt mechanism for fast and easyspecimen installation

    DESCRIPTION

The design of the GCTS Simple Shear System is based on ourexternal cell wall triaxial system. The apparatus has a fixed topand a sliding bottom base mounted on special linear bearings. The system also has a stiff internal support to minimize lateralcompliance of the top cap.

One of the main advantages of the GCTS Simple Shear Systemis that our apparatus does not require a reinforced membrane aslateral support is provided via the confining pressure. This meansthat consolidation can be done at K values other than Ko.

The confining pressure can be servo controlled and together with

the hydraulic servo control of the normal and shear loads, theGCTS system is capable of performing advanced tests such aszero volume change.

The system is capable of testing 100 mm (4 in.) and 71 mm(2.8 in.) diameter specimens. Because the internal lateral supportcan be adjusted up or down, various specimen heights can betested. This means that the system can be used to test eithersimple shear or triaxial test specimens with heights up to 2.5times the diameter.

    •  Front and back-hinged doors swing open for easyspecimen access

    •  Internal load cells are rigidly attached to upper andboth side loading platens

    •  Especially well suited for Ko-consolidation testing•  “Turn-key” systems

    •  Systems also manufactured to customerspecifications

    •  Unsaturated soils triaxial testing

    DESCRIPTION

The Poly-Axial System includes four hydraulic load ramsequipped with LVDT’s so that each platen can be independentlycomputer-controlled. The feedback control can be either stress orstrain. With this configuration the specimen can be maintained

centered minimizing end platen friction. This is accomplished byalways making one of the LVDT’s on each plane with hydraulicloaders the “master” and the opposing LVDT the “slave”. The

master LVDT can be controlled to deform at a particular rate, including zero, and the slave is automatically programmed todeform an equal amount.

Each one of the horizontal loading rams has an internal load cellbecause there can be significant end platen friction at the top andbottom porous stones, especially if the specimen exhibitssignificant non-homogeneity. The load cell at the bottom verticalloader is omitted because the side platens are smooth and can belubricated making end platen friction much less an issue for thisdirection. Pore pressures are measured at the top and bottomspecimen ends.

Stresses/strains in the axis 3 directions are applied through thechamber fluid pressure. A volume change device is used tomeasure and control the strains in this direction. Optionalproximity sensors can also be used to measure deformations inthis direction.

    150 mm (6”) diameter

    •  Available Indirect Tension fixtures to perform ASTMD4123 and SHRP P-7

    • Complete “turn-key” systems

    DESCRIPTION

The GCTS Resilient Modulus and Asphalt Testing System boastsa modular design which allows the system to be configured to test

asphalt and soil in a variety of modes. This system is based onthe GCTS SCON Digital Signal Conditioning and Controller andcan be supplied with pneumatic or hydraulic loader.

Contact stress is automatically adjustedaccording to the above procedures as selected. Availablewaveforms include haversine, sine, square and triangular, alongwith a user defined waveform selection. Optional peak & valleycompensation ensures proper and quick matching of the loadparameters. Real time displays of the prescribed versus actual

dynamic load or the dynamic deformation measurements by eachsensor are always present. Deformation ratio of the two sensors,Rv (to ensure that the two deformation sensors are in agreement)and Mr  are also calculated in real time. During export, curve fittingis done to fit the results to models that predict Mr  as a function ofσm, σd, and CP (cell pressure). Four different functions are

calculated automatically (as required by AASHTO and NCHRPprocedures):

    • Mr  = K1 (σm)K2

    • Mr  = K1 (σd)K2

    • Mr  = K1 (σd)K2 CPK3

    • Mr  = K1 Pa[(Θ-3K6)/Pa]K2 [τoct/Pa + K7]K3

For testing asphalt at different temperatures, an optionalenvironmental chamber can be provided. This chamber canaccommodate triaxial, indirect tension, beam flexural fatigue, dynamic modulus and all the other testing fixtures GCTS offers.

Temperatures of ‑30° to +150°C (with liquid nitrogen boost) can

    be achieved with this option.
