13 September 2019 Ground Works We have a number of projects that will continue over the upcoming holiday break. Our Gaga Pit area with accompanying landscaping will continue over the holidays and the irrigation system being installed on the oval. It was great to see our staff, as part of our recent social event, out planning trees and shrubs in this area! We will have steel garden hoops installed around at the front of the school to ‘beautify’ the garden beds and bark areas. Our general maintenance checks will also be conducted so that we are ready for a brand new term! State School Spectacular We are proud to announce that this special group of children will be participating in The State School Spectacular, this weekend. They have been rehearsing and readying themselves for this performance for many months and we wish them all the best for their performance. I must acknowledge the commitment that Krystal Sauvarin has shown in helping to prepare our students.

Year 6 Exhibition It is with great pride that the KCPS community was able to view the 2019 Year 6 Exhibition this week. The Exhibition draws upon all the gains that students have acquired such as the attributes, skills and behaviours over their PYP schooling experience. In order for our PYP Exhibition to be successful we rely heavily on the support and commitment from our Year 6 students, teachers and mentors. I was impressed by the knowledgeable way in which our students were able to engage in a deep and impactful inquiry about their chosen area with the support of their peers. The knowledge they have gained and the reflections they shared as part of this journey, were abundant and an impressive example of our Learner Profile attributes. I would like to extend a special thank you to the Year 6 team who work tirelessly to support our children throughout this experience!

Parent Helpers Thank you to those parents who have put themselves forward to participate in our upcoming camps for Year 3, Year 4 and Year 5. I have had many responses from our parent community, which is greatly appreciated. Unfortunately we are unable to accept all volunteers, however, I will be in contact with those who will attend these camps, over the coming days. PYP Evaluation I have recently shared our assessment report after our PYP Evaluation with our School Council. Our councillors generously created a letter of thanks to our staff for their achievements and the many commendations we received from this experience. Our staff were very pleased with this acknowledgement! Thank you to our councillors for recognising our efforts.
Class Captains- Term 4 I look forward to seeing our community attend our end of term assembly next week. We are eagerly awaiting the announcement of our Term 4 Class Captains. This collaborative decision in selecting the students who have shown the attributes of our Learning Profile, is an important event and I hope to see many of you there! Have an exquisite fortnight everyone. Blayne Wallis Acting Principal

Reading is my
Secret Power
We had a wonderful week at Kororoit Creek Primary School last week celebrating Book Week. A big thank you to students, parents and staff for your input and support during the week, especially to Samantha Beh and Sharni King for organising all the events for the week. Students had the opportunity to take part in various Book Week related activities throughout the week including ‘Match your teacher to their favourite character’ competition. Congratulations to the following homerooms for getting the most correct matches and winning additional books for their classroom libraries: Prep- H02 & H03 Grade One- H13 and H15 Grade Two- H24 Grade Three- H40 Grade Four- H33 Grade Five- H43 Grade Six- H48 & H52 On Wednesday last week we held our annual Book Week Parade. Congratulations to all the students and teachers for making their much-loved book characters come to life at the parade. Each homeroom had the opportunity to show off their creative creations at the parade and we all loved seeing the magnificent costumes. Thank you also to our judges, Susan, Sarah W and Sarah G who had the very difficult job to picking our winners for this year.

A BIG congratulations to our 287 students from Grade Prep to Grade Six who successfully completed the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge this year and read over 10 000 books! These students will be receiving a certificate of acknowledgement soon for completing the reading challenge for 2019. Well done everyone and happy reading!
Day
R U OK? Day is an event to remind people that everyday of the year, there are children and adults who are struggling with life’s ups and downs. It is a day to encourage people to ask each other if they are okay. If everyone just asked this simple question, it could help someone in need, or get them to open up and start a conversation. R U OK? Day will be held on Wednesday the 18th of September at Kororoit Creek Primary School. On this day, people can ask their friends, family or even colleagues, R U OK? If you are a parent you could ask your children to see if they are ok. Encourage them to ask their friends, family and important people within their lives. The day is about making people feel comfortable and confident to talk about their feelings and how to deal with what they’re going through. It also helps for them to know where to get help from. It gives people the opportunity to be listened to, without needing to worry about being judged. If you want to inquire more into this important Mental Health event please check out the R U OK? Day website at https://wwwh.ruok.org.au/

ART This term Grade One students have been learning about positive and negative space.
Students have developed their ability to articulate what positive and negative space is and how it
can have an impact on the creation of an artwork. They researched a range of artists that have
used positive and negative space and used this to inspire their own art piece. Students also
developed their ability to select appropriate media for a positive and negative space artwork by
conducting a range of experiments using white and black paper and materials such as pastels,
crayons, fine liners, pencils and textas. Students then used this knowledge to make informed
decisions on what materials would work best in their final artwork.
FRENCH This term, the Grade One students have been
inquiring into the Central Idea “Objects can be sorted and classified according to
their attributes” and explored what an adjective is as well as various French
adjectives describing the colour, texture, shape and size of objects.
The students have used French adjectives in sentences to describe their toys
from home as well as their peers’ toys. Furthermore, they have used the Venn
Diagram and French adjectives to compare different familiar objects.
MUSIC The Grade One’s have been inquiring into the central idea of,
‘People use their imaginations when creating and exploring music’. During this unit,
students used their imaginations while listening to music and drew what they heard.
Students were given the opportunity to complete a ‘sound search’ where they matched
an emotion to a particular sound of an instrument. Following this learning experience,
students used their sound searches to create music to match a visual stimulus of a
silent film. Students worked collaboratively to create a graphic score to represent
their music, rehearsed this in their groups and finally performed their music in time
with their silent film.
PE The Grade Three and Six students have begun inquiring into their unit of ‘Movement’.
Students are exploring their skipping skills and have completed a pretest on seesaw. During this unit
students will be working towards learning various tricks and skills which will be incorporated into a
final skipping routine. Students have been demonstrating great enthusiasm and persistence in
attempting their new skills each week. Some activities we have been working on are long rope
skipping, individual skipping and sequencing tricks together. We are very excited to watch students
improve their skills each week and cannot wait for the final assessment of their skipping routine.

Green Team News
KCPS Staff Working Bee On Wednesday the KCPS staff participated in a working bee where we planted approximately 150 trees near the new gaga pit. How amazing is that! It was a fantastic day and this has now made this environment an enjoyable and inviting play space for our students
Co-mingle bins
Congratulations everyone that had a go at deciding which items go into the yellow bin AND gave the reason why. Remember to always discard items into the appropriate bins.
Just a reminder that Nude Food Day will continue to be held EVERY Wednesday @ KCPS. The Green Team Captains will be collecting data on the number of student participants in
their class each week. Classes with the most participation throughout the term will be announced during the end of term 3 assembly this week!
Rubbish in the yard
Students have been reminded to please ensure they are throwing out rubbish into the appropriate bins when out in the yard and in the classroom. This will
help make sure our school continues to be a clean and environmentally friendly community.

Sports Update
On the 3rd of September, a team of 25 students travelled to Keilor Park Athletics Track to compete in the 2019 Divisional Athletic Championships. We had many students competing in a wide range of events including jumping, throwing, sprinting, relays and long distance running. It was great to see all team members support each other, as well as trying their best in the events they competed in. We are proud to announce that 13 students have progressed to the regional competition that will be held in week 2 of Term 4 on October 15 at Keilor Park. All students should be happy with their efforts and good luck to the students competing at the Regional Competition.

How To Boost Your Immune System
Protect yourself and your kids from diseases
By Saksham Bhardwaj H-47
The immune system protects us from pathogens and antigens. It also protects us from viruses, bacteria and parasites
from killing us. Sometimes we strengthen our muscles or exercise our brain but what about strengthening our
immune system?
Your immune system is exactly that - a system. It requires harmony and balance to function properly. Some steps you
can take to boost your immune system are:
- Avoid smoking
- Exercise regularly
- Maintain a healthy diet
- Get adequate sleep every night
- Try to minimise stress
- Take steps to avoid infection ie. washing hands
Kororoit Creek Primary School has a zero tolerance for any form of child abuse
If you’re wondering if there’s any foods that help your immune system, don’t worry, we’re getting there:
- Turmeric
- Garlic
- Spinach
- Almonds
- Fruits and Vegetables
These techniques will make your immune system stronger so it can fend off diseases and keep us alive and, let’s face
it, your immune system is all that stands in the way of lethal viruses so let’s take care of it. After all, you would want
your kids to be healthy.
