Kororoit Creek Primary School has a zero tolerance for any form of child abuse ‘Where minds come to grow’ 31 August 2018 NAPLAN As many of you may have read in the media NAPLAN results have been released this week. As they were only released to schools yesterday we have not yet completed a deep analysis however overall our summary data looks very positive. I would like to congratulate, and express my sincere thanks to, all of our students and staff who work together to ensure that we continue to achieve the high standards the school is known for. These outcomes will support the classroom teachers and leadership team to work collaboratively on ‘unpacking’ and reviewing the results so that we can consolidate our learnings and apply them to future teaching. I know there are many parents who are anxious to get their individual child’s results, we have not yet received these, as soon as they arrive they will be sent straight home to you. Please remember these results are just a tiny snapshot in time and do not reflect all the wonderful things that our children are capable of. Front of the School Refurbishment Many of you would have seen the progress that is taking place with the refurbishment at the front of the school. It is looking incredible! Stage 1 and 2 of the project is nearing completion, the Amphitheatre has been built and the landscaping works are coming together. The family pavers have arrived and will be laid along the new and existing paths as part of the refurbishment. Over the next few weeks, Brocor will be laying synthetic turf in the grassed areas, which will look fantastic and provide an outdoor learning environment for students all year round. We are crossing all of our fingers and toes that it will be ready for students to use in early Term 4. Big Screen I hope everyone has had a chance to come to assembly to see our new big screen in the gym. The screen has made a huge difference to fortnightly assemblies as well as our staff professional learning. It will continue to be a great resource for any whole school event or parent information session. Thank-you again to everyone for your support. Colour Run Thank-you to everyone who has been busily raising money for the upcoming Colour run. We will continue to post information about this event on Compass to keep you updated. Staff and students are extremely excited for the event we have organized for different activities on the day such as a photo booth, hurdles, music, a dance station and a hula hoop challenge. Tournament of the Minds

Congratulations to our Tournament of the Minds contestants who took part in the competition over the weekend. Each of the teams created inspired performances as they captured the hearts of the judges. Sonix and Gabe from H46 have written about their experiences below.

On the Saturday the 25th Of August two amazing teams performed in front of two judges for Tournament of the Minds. These teams were made up of grade 5’s and 6’s. ‘Escaping To Freedom’: Sonix, Alex, Jana, Chas, Dylan, Aaliya and Kaavya. (Pictured right) Fence-tastic’: Gabe, Micah, Jacob, Medha, Halle, Nivedhaa, Pranaanjalie. (Pictured left)

We all worked on the long term challenges that lasted six weeks. Escaping to Freedom created their own musical that represented the theme of freedom and Fence-tastic described what happened to the world when a fence was found. On the day we also had a spontaneous challenge where we didn’t know what the challenge would be. We had four minutes to come up with an answer and 1 minute to present. The day was really fun and we would definitely do it again next year. By Sonix and Gabe from H46 A fantastic effort by all! I would like to say a special thank-you to the teachers who have volunteered their time to support the students and prepare them for the event Beth Warne, Megan Ryan, Jinan Semsem and Cassie Chappell. I hope you have a great fortnight!

Bethany Riseley Principal Attitude Hunt - Term 3 Week 6 Congratulations to all of our students who, through their everyday actions whilst at school, have demonstrated the PYP Attitudes. We appreciate your efforts! Some of our award winners include: Orlando (H16), from Goldstein House, who demonstrated the PYP Attitude of Empathy when he helped out a teacher pick up papers blown away from the wind. Taylor (H25), from Batman House, who demonstrated the PYP Attitude of Respect when she took initiative to clean up after two classes during an indoor recess. Noah (H34), from Cuthbert House, who demonstrated the PYP Attitude of Integrity when he handed in a piece of jewelry that he found to the office. Tayla (H40), from Cuthbert House, who demonstrated the PYP Attitude of Cooperation when she included other students out in the yard.

Well done to all of our award winners!

Fathers Day Stall A HUGE thank you to our Fathers Day Stall parent helpers Mary-Anne, Gabrielle, Giovanna, Paula, Emma, Rekha, Meri, Susan, Therese, Kalyani, Joanna, Trish, Elizabeth, Catherine, Janelle , Manori, Sharon, Cara, Domenica, Biljana, Leila and Mubeen. We appreciate you volunteering your time, setting up and assisting 53 classes and 6 kinder groups in choosing a gift for their Dad, Carer or Grandparent, for Father’s Day.

We hope everyone has a wonderful Fathers Day on Sunday, enjoy the special gifts the children have chosen!

Kororoit Creek Primary School have celebrated Book Week this week. During the week students have visited the library and read the shortlisted books, along with discussing and trying to guess their teachers’ favourite books. Our classroom libraries have also been a large focus, with students categorising and continuing to enjoy rich literature. We had a great day on Wednesday with our students and staff dressing up as their favourite book characters for our annual parade. It was amazing to see the effort so many of our students (and staff) went to, to dress themselves up for the event. Costumes ranged from pirates to princesses, Hairy Maclary to Hagrid and Witches to Where’s Wally, with prizes being awarded to the most unique and creative. A big thank you to our parent community for supporting events such as these.

CONGRATULATIONS to ALL of the students who participated in KCPS first ever NUDE FOOD DAY! It was a HUGE SUCCESS

with so many students coming to school plastic and wrapper free! We will be announcing the classes with the highest level participation at the week eight assemblies, as well as be

recognising individual students for their efforts. Due to the success of our first attempt, put Wednesday the 12th of September (Week Nine) into your diary as Kororoit Creek Primary School kids will be holding their SECOND ever NUDE FOOD DAY! ALL students will be encouraged to bring in healthy, wrapper free lunches to school for snack and lunch.

NUDE FOOD day is a chance for our students to realise what they can do for their health and the health of the planet. An event like this can give us all at KCPS a taste of the benefits, ease and fun involved in packing a healthy, wrapper free lunch. Some suggestions on how to make your lunch a NUDE FOOD success are:

Using plastic reusable containers for sandwiches, fruit and yoghurt.

Bringing a re-useable drink bottle for water.

Cutting up vegetable sticks and dip!

Popping popcorn.

Packing whole pieces of fruit… and many more!

Sports update HPV Bendigo. For the third race of the year, the Kororoit Creek HPV team travelled to Bendigo for the first day/night race of the 2018 series. With a challenging day at Knox in the previous race, all team members were determined to push themselves for the team and get through the day with no issues to the bike. The weather for the day was challenging as students pushed themselves through the rain, wind, hail and cold whilst tackling ‘Heartbreak Hill’. The Creepers embraced this challenge and rode hard all day and night to finish in 13th place in strong competition, placing them in the top half of their category. All team members should be proud with their efforts on the day as it was great to see students encouraging each other in the bike, as well as helping out with other roles in pit including timing, changeovers and communicating times with the rider in the bike. On behalf of the HPV team, we would also like to thank all those who were involved in helping out during the day including packing and setting up, taking photos, cooking dinner, and marshalling on the track, it made for a successful and smooth day for the students involved. Thanks, HPV Team.

2018 Deer Park District Athletics Carnival. On the 17th of August, a team of 60 KCPS students travelled to Keilor Park Recreation Reserve for the 2018 Deer Park District Athletics Carnival. The competition was strong and the students were excited, it was a perfect day for athletics. The hard work all students had put into their training was evident through great results, including many podium finishes, as well as many students beating their personal best time, throw, or jump. Well done to all students who were involved in the day, with huge congratulations to the 22 students who are progressing to the 2018 divisional carnival that will be held on the 4thof September 2018. Special mentions go to Lily Faulkner (H49) and Marco Spagnuolo (H52) for being awarded Kororoit Creeks’ “best and fairest” athletes for the day, placing first in their three events.

Hi parents and carers,

Just an update for the whole school Camp Quality Incursion. Due to unforeseen

circumstances, the incursion will now be occurring on the 20th of November.

Many families within our school community have been affected by Cancer and as you

may know, we have a student who is currently undergoing treatment.

Camp Quality provide Primary School Education program that uses vivacious and

loveable puppets, Kylie, Dean and Melissa to help support children affected by cancer.

This program has been in operation since 1988 and shares an interactive and engaging

narrative that explains:

• The ins and outs of cancer • Why their peer who has undergone treatment may look a little different (due to the side

effects of chemotherapy) • Why it’s important to be supportive of their classmate who is either living with cancer or

has a diagnosed parent or sibling • That cancer isn’t contagious, so it’s ok to play • The importance of positivity and recognising our own strengths

This live, educational performance will also focuses on optimism, friendship and

tolerance.

The incursion will occur at no cost to the school, parents or students and is a great

opportunity for our students to learn how to create a supportive school community for

their peers who may be affected by cancer.

Following the performance, students are encouraged to ask questions and share their

concerns. If any concerns arise after the performance, please feel free to contact Camp

Quality or see one of the Assistant Principals.

If you would like more information about the program or would like to see a clip of the

puppets in action, please visit www.campquality.org.au/for-teachers. You’re also

welcome to contact the puppet team by emailing Camp Quality at

[email protected] or by calling 1300 662 267.

If you have any questions or concerns about this incursion, please see one of the

Assistant Principals.
