13 W ays to Attract and Engage your Audience in Social M edia
What are the secrets for successful social media engagement? Are you directly working for a Brand or serving your clients through different Agency platforms? The following 13 guidelines can help you optimize social media eng
agement organically.
1. UNDERSTAND PEOPLE
You cannot succeed in Social Media marketing, unless you understand your people (visitors to your page, blog, website, etc.), their
demographic composition, educational status, cultural taboos, likes and dislikes, preferences, hobbies, habits, comfort zones,
expectations etc.
2. NETWORK ECOSYSTEM
You need to create a linkage between and among Social networking sites, websites, blogs, webinars and Slideshares to optimize the social
media engagement of your people. It is essential to create navigating opportunities for your people take part in different
type of activities. Also, integrate your online and offline opportunities here.
3. APPROPRIATE SALUTATION
How would you call your people? Remember, your selection of a salutation is situational. If required, don’t hesitate to call your people either by first name or second name. However, in business discussions
or conversations, people might prefer to be called either as ‘Sir or Madam’.
4. CONTINUITY OF DISCUSSIONS
Be thoughtful, creative and innovative in initiating discussions in different social media platforms. Also, be active in contributing to ongoing
discussions. Remember, every discussion must fulfill multiple objectives of participants. Someone may find it useful for learning,
someone may find answers to his/her questions, someone may participate for productive use of his / her time, someone may go
online to purchase of an item or product etc.
5. USE OF SIGN LANGUAGE
The symbols and signs communicate different messages or emotions in different societies or communities. We need to take care of several such ‘diversity’ issues on social media platforms. Be pragmatic and sensitive in using signs and symbols through pictorial presentations.
6. MOBILE-FRIENDLY CONTENT
Be compatible to optimally use the product ecosystem. Create content which can be suitably displayed on different gadgets, such as PC, Smart phone, Tablets, mobile phones etc. Also, take care so that
the content can be shared by users of social media.
7. JUDICIOUS USE OF EMPATHY AND SYMPATHY
Empathy strengthens EGO but sympathy consoles it. So, be careful, when you are dealing with delicate emotions of your people. Respond to
their feelings and views without making any judgement. Create space for engagement with appropriate visuals, which will
adequately match customer emotion and ego.
8. SOCIAL OBJECTIVES
Don’t try to use Social Media platform exclusively for commercial gains. Always keep track with relevant social issues which would be
compatible with your Brand or Product or Service.
9. REFLECTION
About once a month or so go back and scan through your postings to catch the sentiment. Are you mostly posting "the sky is falling" kinds of information or are you pretty upbeat and hope-filled? What is your intention? Look at your analytics too and see what is getting liked,
commented on and shared.
10. Celebrate your followers
Have you hosted or participated in a recent event, meeting or some other action involving peers, coalition members or influential
stakeholders? Take a photo and add it to your social media locations
11. Know What to Include in Images
While many businesses are incorporating images in their updates, it’s a good idea to see how different styles of images affect
your engagement on Facebook.
12. Vary Where You Spend Your Time Online
Sometimes the best-laid plans will go astray. The most important thing is to remain flexible about where you spend your time online and create strong, active presences on social networks where your
customers and prospects hang out.
13. APPRECIATION AND REWARD
Appreciate and reward the best contributors or comments. That may give you the opportunity to organize several online and offline events. Also, it will help you to generate more traffic and earn goodwill.
