Dear friends,

First, I want to thank everyone who helped set up our Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony on December 15, 2017 and to all who participated in it—the choirs, the youth group and all our guests. Like our first celebration, it was a glorious event and a wonderful way to enter into our Christmas celebration.

Speaking of Christmas, everyone loves to receive gifts at Christmas time. And I am sure that as Christmas is upon us, we are wondering what lies behind those wrapped presents. I remember as a child that the four weeks of Advent were so difficult. I would go by the Christmas tree about 1000 times a day looking at the present with my name on it to try to discover exactly what it was. I could not touch the presents—that was against the rules. And so I would spend time imagining what was in that box and hope to goodness that it was exactly what I had asked for.

It reminds me of a Dennis the Menace cartoon. Dennis is shown rushing into the room with this big box, and as his mom turns around, her mouth drops open as Dennis says, "Mom, we’d better tell Santa Claus to forget about the train that I asked for. I just found one exactly like I want on the top shelf of Dad’s closet."

Can you imagine this gift that we are receiving today?

Swept along on the wave of worldwide elation over the lunar landing and their safe return to earth, President Nixon said, "This is the greatest week since the beginning of the world! Nothing has changed the world more than this mission."

I heartily disagree. The greatest and most wondrous event in the world occurred when the angel announced long ago the hope-enkindling Advent of the Savior: “I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For today a Savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord.”

As God the Father gave us the precious gift of His Son, our parish wants to give you a gift for Christmas. Be sure to take home one of the gift cards in the baskets at the doors of the Church. Our gift is a renewed subscription to FORMED—a large Catholic E-Library that will enable you to know and love even more the gift of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

On behalf of our parish family, I wish you and your loved ones a very blessed Christmas.

God bless you

Yours in Christ,

Fr. Joseph Shea

Seeking the Gift of Faith The R.C.I.A. Process: Becoming Catholic

We invite anyone interested in becoming Catholic, and those already baptized who need both the Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation, to join us on a Journey of Faith in the R.C.I.A. Process. Many of you are coming to Mass with your families and are hesitant to take that first step toward inquiring about the Catholic Faith. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) is the process by which adults become members

of the Roman Catholic Church. The Process is for adults who are unbaptized, those baptized in another faith and for those baptized Catholic who need both the Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation. Our St. Rose of Lima R.C.I.A. Team provides a welcoming environment where the teachings of the Church are presented and questions are answered. We bring you on a “Journey of Faith” with the Catholic Church: it’s Beliefs, Traditions, History and Worship and incorporate you into its life with Christ today. This is your Journey, your Quest. There are no commitments in the Inquiry Phase of the Process. Becoming Catholic is one of the most profound and joyous experiences of life. Give yourself or someone you know, a great start into the New Year – the Gift of coming to know our Lord, Jesus Christ. As you gather together with family and friends during this beautiful time of year, reach out and invite someone to inquire into our beautiful faith. Inquiry sessions will begin soon. Please contact the Faith Formation Office, 805 526-5513 for further information. We wish you a Very Blessed New Year.

This liturgy is a wonderful opportunity to renew our commitment to life and has also been incorporated as the closing liturgy for our OneLife LA celebration. It is an effective way for families to teach their children about the sanctity of life and provides a meaningful group activity for parishes, youth ministry groups in school. Whether in conjunction with OneLife LA or as a singular event, I would like to extend a personal invitation to you and your parishioners, parish staff, and pastoral ministry teams to join us at the Requiem for the Unborn.

Keep holiday parties safe for children Wine, cocktails and spiked eggnog may make your holidays festive, but they’re no party for young children. Children often accidentally drink alcohol after holiday parties, by sampling partially empty glasses and what’s left in the punch bowl. Ingesting as little as 3 ounces of hard liquor potentially can be fatal to a child weighing 25 pounds. Alcohol causes blood sugar levels to drop, which can lead to confusion, seizures or even comas. Clear away all glasses and other alcoholic containers immediately as soon as guests leave after your holiday party. Keep the poison control center phone number programmed in your phone and posted on your refrigerator: 800 222 1222. For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at 213 637 7650.

Padre Joseph Shea

Fr. John Maloney presents “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?” February 2nd – beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Are you a new parishioner who’d like to meet other parishioners in a warm, friendly se ng? Are you a long me parishioner who’d like to meet some new people? Would you like to enjoy a night out while suppor ng our priests and parish? Then this is the event for you! Here's how it works: Some parishioners volunteer early on to host a group of diners, commi ng to prepare a several-course meal showcasing their culinary skills. Everybody else is invited to buy ckets to dine. On the evening of the event, the diners gather at the rectory backyard for a pre-cocktail party with our priests, they learn where they will be dining, then head off to their mystery home for a fes ve meal with other St. Rose Parishioners and their guests. The evening concludes back at the rectory for all of our dinner hosts and their guests to enjoy some wonderful deserts! Each mystery home will also have a “special guest” in a endance! Guests and hosts alike will love this wonderful fundraiser! 100% of the proceeds of this event will go towards the building of new private rectory home for our priests. This will also free up badly needed office and mee ng space in what is now our current rectory. Tickets are $40 per person now through January 15 and increase to $50 each from January 16 un l they are sold out.
