TENNESSEE WILLIAMS’ “STAIRS TO THE ROOF”
Performances November 6 thru the 23 in the Boo Cat Club located at 812 N. Union
“Stairs to the Roof” will be the premiere performance at the newly renovated Boo Cat Club, the former St. Louis Artist Guild that was built in 1906. Tennessee Williams produced a number of his earlier plays there. Be one of the first to experience this beautiful, historic space.
Benjamin Murphy stages a one-man rebellion against the clock, the mo-notony of an eight-to-five job and the dehumanizing forces of an increasing mechanized and commercial society. Ben takes us on a series of fantastic adventures that culminate in an escape from the mundane taking us up his stairs to the roof to a better, more Utopian world.
Tennessee Williams’ “Stairs to the Roof” is a rarely produced gem that is at once a comedy and a love story, with elements of romance and fantasy. “Stairs to the Roof” was the last of his apprentice plays. It was completed in December 1941, and premiered on February 26, 1947. The play is based on earlier stories written by Williams, including “The Swan” and one bearing the same title as the play written in October 1936. The play is based on Williams’ own experiences working in the relentlessly mechanical world of the large International Shoes factory in St. Louis which caused him to suffer a nervous breakdown.
For more information about the Boo Cat Club and tickets please visit http://boocatclub.com or call (314) 224-5521
The History of Boo CatDesigned by St. Louis architect Louis C. Spiering, 812 North Union was built by and for the members of the St. Louis Artists’ Guild in 1908. The Guild’s mission was and still is to promote a high standard of art appreciation and to support the city’s working artists. The theatre was added in 1916 and hosted hundreds of local productions over the years, including performances by Tennessee Williams. The Guild sold the building to Dignity House in 1973, a community outreach nonprofit that used the space until 2013 when Patrick and Carol Schuchard purchased the building and revamped it to reflect its original design and use.

Dialing in the directional control and distance awareness of your short game is challenging. Use this putting drill to practice control and drop your stroke count. Choose a breaking putt that's between
15 and 40 feet long. Walk to about the halfway mark and place two tees six inches apart. You get one point for sending the ball between the tees; you get a second point if you can also end within three feet of the hole; and a third point for also sinking the putt.
This game rewards accuracy, speed control, and perceptual awareness by forcing you to visualize the line the ball needs to take. Adjust the game as you improve by moving the tees, shifting your starting point, or moving the tees closer together. The more you play, the better you'll get at identi-fying and executing the best line to the hole. Tip courtesy of Dan Martin, PGA | Golf Tips Mag
