Your aims are:
• To control blood loss• To maintain an open airway

1. Sit the casualty down with her head tilted forwards. DO NOT let the head tip back; blood may run down the throat and induce vomiting
2. Ask the casualty to breathe through her mouth and to pinch her nose just below the bridge
2. Tell her not to speak, swallow, cough, spit or sniff, as she may disturb blood clots. Give her a clean cloth or tissue to mop up any dribble

3. After 10 minutes, tell the casualty to release the pressure. If him/her nose is still bleeding, reapply the pressure for two further periods of ten minutes.
IF the nosebleed persists beyond 30 minutes, send the casualty to hospital in the treatment position

4. Once the bleeding is under control, and with the casualty still leaning forward, gently clean around her nose and mouth with lukewarm water.
5. Advise the casualty to rest quietly for a few hours, and not to blow her nose, as this will disturb any clot

Proper management of nosebleed should be applied to prevent prolonged bleeding.
If the bleeding is severe or lasts longer than 30 minutes, send the casualty to the
hospital immediately.
