BEVERL Y OLIVER-BLOUNT - Regular theater goers will rememberBeverly's stage debut in our last production. "Show Boat", as she made animmediate hit in her role as Queenie. With 15 years of violin and 3years ofvocal training, it is surprising that she is currently studying to be aregistered psychiatric nurse. We are just delighted that her hobbies ofviolin, piano, racquetball and her studies have not kept her fromperforming with us again.

STEVE COMPLETO - A regular member of The Overtures, Steve receivedthe nomination for Best Actor in "Rodger & Hart's, A Musical Celebration".This marks his sixth appearance with WVLO, "Camelot", Very GoodEddie", "Sound of Music" and "Rose Marie". Steve has performed majorleads and supporting roles in almost everyone of Gilber & Sullivan'sproductions and for SDG he appeared in "King & I", "Cole", "Kismet" and"Anything Goes". Steve enjoys tennis, racquetball, bowling and bicyclingwhen he can take time away from his bartending duties in his bar, "TheSilver Fox" in Cupertino. We are always delighted to have the opportunityto highlight Steve's talent on our stage!

LINDA COVINGTON - Linda's first appearance with WVLO was in therole of Magnolia in "Show Boat" and weare thrilled to have her back on ourstage. Last year she appeared in "Oklahoma" and in various productionswith Gilbert & Sullivan. With a busy husband and three sons, Linda stillfinds time to teach voice. Her career ambition is to get paid to sing; well, with her beautiful voice, that just might happen!

CAROL SHER - It has been 13 years since Carol has appeared withWVLO, but she has remained active in local theater productions. As CarolDavis (she recently got married) she was our vivacious "Unsinkable MollyBrown" and Gretchen in our first "Student Prince". Since then she hasmany performances to credit, including "Auntie Mame", "Shenandoah","Irene", "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" and the melodramas atGaslighter Theater. It's great to have you back, Carol, and don't let it besuch a long time between productions.

JOE FINCHER - A rare breed, a native Californian, Joe is wellremembered for his wonderful portrayal of Bert Healy in "Annie". If yousaw SDG's "Li'l Abner", you had to recall Joe as Marryin' Sam, a greatcharacter. Other credits include "Guys and Dolls", "Stalag 17", and "TheRitz". He and his wife, Martha, are expecting their second child during therun of this production so we are hoping it doesn't choose an inopportunetime (like a performance night) to celebrate his/her opening night! Thisyoung man's well-rounded personality, excellent voice and easy manner, make him a joy to have in our cast. Hang in there, Daddy!

IRYNE HACK - This marks Iryne's eleventh production with WVLO, hermost recent being "The Student Prince" and "Flower Drum Song". Herlong list of credits include some 24various productions as a performer, butshe is one of those versatile and talented people who also enjoys workingbehind the scenes; sewing costumes, painting sets, doing props, etc .. Shehas "performed" in this capacity and on stage crew for five of our otherproductions. Nice to have you on stage again, Iryne!

Page 6: 13777 Fruitvale Avenue, Saratoga INFORMATION … Some Enchanted Evening.pdf · PRESENTS SOME ENCHANTED EVENING THE SONGS OF RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN Music by Richard Rodgers Lyrics by

DENNIS HERSEY - Dennis makes his first appearance with WVLO, butwas most recently seen on this stage in SDG's "Cole". He performed withMichelle Lee in CLO's, "See Saw" and in their other productions of"Oliver", West Side Story", "Damn Yankees", "Marne", "Show Boat" and"Jesus Christ, Superstar". His career ambition is to cut his own recordalbum, but in the meantime he works for San Jose Hospital as a Supervisor. We know Dennis has got what it takes to make records, so are you listeningout there, all you record album producers? That ought to do it, Dennis, justremember, you got your break here at WVLO'

PATRICIA McGOWAN - Patricia is no stranger to our stage, just a long-time absentee in orderto obtain her BA in Theater Arts from San Jose StateUniversity. She just recently appeared in SJSU's "Man of La Mancha" afterspending 3 years with a professional, summer theater. Her film creditsinclude "Clockwork Orange", "Gone With the Wind" and "It's a WonderfulLife". Her ambition is to be happy, successful and race slugs; if you hurry,Pat, we're certain you will make it. Welcome back!

ERNIE SANDOVAL - Ernie is a native of the Bay Area, another of the rarebreed, who earned his BA in Art from San Jose State. "Cole" was his mostrecent stage appearance, but he has also performed in "Bye Bye Birdie","Li'l Abner" and "Call Me Madam". Because Ernie's talents includedrawing and design, he has designed sets, lobby displays and worked withseveral community theater groups in the technical aspects of production. He is such a wonderfully versatile individual, he is at home with a pen orpaint brush in his hand as well as singing and dancing on our stage.Needless to say, any group feels fortunate to have Ernie in any capacity, cast or crew. Welcome to your first "performance" with WVLO.

BILL WILKINSON - Would you believe our charming Ravenal from "ShowBoat" was once a pirate? That's how he began his stage career, as a piratein "Peter Pan" at Foothill College. Then he made a series of appearancesfor SDG in "Irene", "Music Man", "Cole" and "Fiddler On The Roof". Billwas also soloist for the Santa Clara Chorale and the San Jose SymphonicBand. His career ambition is to support himself through 'entertaining'. Weknow you are always entertaining, Bill, so you should be a millionaire' Re-gardless, we are always "charmed" to have a talent like Bill do back-to-back shows for us!

MIKE MOON - Another native Californian, Mike also makes his firstappearance with us, but has been very active in theater since High Schoolplaying leads in "Finian's Rainbow", "West Side Story", "My Fair Lady","Bye Bye Birdie" and "Hello Doily"! Mike's big chance came when he wasasked to play Tevye in "Fiddler On The Roof" with only two weeks toopening night and he had never seen the play or movie. He gave anexcellent performance and that incident became the highlight of his careerto date. We're hoping "Some Enchanted Evening" will replace thatexperience as one of his most memorable. Mike says he is single andlooking for Miss Right, so get in line, girls, and swoon while he croons!

DIRECTOR

ROBERT GRISWOLD - Even though Bob has been involved with ourAssociation since its first season 20years ago, this is Bob's directing debutfor one of WVLO's productions. (He was just a teenager then, or so heclaims') He appeared in the first WVLO production, "Here's Love", thatwas presented at the Saratoga Civic Theatre; directed The Overtures fortwo years and performed in major supporting roles in "Oklahoma!", "OnceUpon A Mattress", "Carousel", "Brigadoon" (twice) and 10 melodramas atthe Opry House in Almaden. His directorial credits include the annual ValLeague shows for 6 years, "Die Fledermaus", "Sunday in New York" and"Nightwatch". Including his various tasks as stage manager for "Rodgers& Hart", stage crew etc., Bob has worked about 15 WVLO productions.Glad to see you've been promoted to Director, Robert'

MUSIC DIRECTOR

WANDA SAXTON - With such a terrific score, Wanda couldn't resist thetemptation to serve in the dual role of Music Director and accompanist. She says that it's good to be back at the keyboard since it adds anotherdimension to her appreciation of theater involvement. It seems talent runsin her family; her son who has played in some of our orchestras, is also anelectric bass player for a local group and her 7 month-old granddaughter isalready trying to sing! "Show Boat", "Annie" and "Man of La Mancha" areWanda's most recent WVl.:O productions and we're happy to welcome herback, even though she isn't waving her magic baton!

MUSIC DIRECTOR

DIANE REYNOLDS - Diane is a very familiar staff member to our subscri-bers, for if she isn't on stage playing, she's in the orchestra pit at the piano.Ever since she became interested in theater at 11 very early age (we won'tsay how long ago that was!), she has maintained her involvement andshared her love of theater with her son and daughter. Why does she keepdoing it? She says it's the thrill of watching performers grow arid developfrom auditions to their peak at showtime. What a gal!!! She "performed" asour on-stage pianist for "Rodgers & Hart" and also for Montalvo's "70,Girls, 70". The rest of her talents and credits are too numerous to mention'

CHOREOGRAPHER

JULIE BICKHAM - After an absence of four years, Julie returns to WVLOin her first role as Choreographer. She performed in "Kiss Me, Kate" and"Flower Drum Song". Other performances include "Annie Get Your Gun","Carousel", "Fantastiks", "King & I" and many more. She has studieddance for 14 years and has been teaching forthe past seven years. She didtake a little time off to have two beautiful daughters, Tenaj and Brandi. Wethink they both came out dancing' Welcome to our staff, Julie!

MESSAGE FROM THE PRODUCERS

Co-producing has been an experience of a lifetime! Everything in the world can and doeshappen. Even though we have been involved in most aspects of theatre, producing is awhole new adventure. Thank God everyone who promised to help so much in the beginningcame through. All pitched in to make this what we consider a good revueOur original concept was: singers must be able to sing and dancers must dance; and, ofcourse, visa versa! Luckily, this is just about what happened. Add to this; very good sets andlighting, costumes, choreography, stage and music direction, we feel we have an excellentshow for you. Our deepest thanks to all who helped in every way to make this production asuccess.

Duane

Thank you one and all forthe opportunity of working with a terrific cast, crew and a staff thathas been indispensable to each and everyone of us.A special note of love and thank you's to Gene and Cele Pincus for their support and to Edand Marge Hand for their confidence.

Love you all,

Ruth

DIRECTORS NOTESIn 1942 the New York Theatre Guild was in financial difficulty, Theresa Helburn telephonedRichard Rodgers. Miss Helburn had an idea that Lynn Riggs play "Green Grow The Lilacs"could be made into a successful libretto.Rodgers was interested. When Rodgers told Larry Hart, his partner and lifelong friend, ofthe proposal, Hart in poor health at the time, urged Rodgers to accept, but with anotherlyricist. So Rodgers called Oscar Hammerstein.Harnrnerstein not only knew "Green Grow The Lilacs": He had already been considering its'musical possibilities. In fact, he had read the play aloud to Jerome Kern, but Kern did notshare his enthusiasm. On a memorable day in 1942, Rodgers and Hammerstein met for lunch at the BarberryRoom on New York's 52nd St. to discuss what eventually become "Oklahoma".The.partnership of Rodgers and Hammerstein lasted for seventeen years and gave us nineoriginal Broadway scores, starting with "Oklahoma" and ending with "The Sound ofMusic", one original Motion Picture score "State Fair" and one original Television score"Cinderella".Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, all of us involved with West Valley Light OperaAssociation would like to say "THANK YOU VERY, VERY MUCH".
