FROM JOANA CARNEIRO, MUSIC DIRECTOR

A warm and festive welcome to each of you. What an extraordinary evening this will be as Berkeley Symphony celebrates the artistry of the composers and musicians whose work you so generously support. What a pleasure it is to have a very dear friend of mine with us, the incomparable Rufus Wainwright with us this evening! This year marks my ninth season as Music

Director of Berkeley Symphony and I am always deeply moved by the love and dedication you express through your generosity. Our orchestra and our community owe a debt of gratitude and we are delighted to raise a glass to salute you on this very special night. Thank you for being such a valued member of the Berkeley Symphony family and for being here tonight for this Gala celebration.

FROM RENÉ MANDEL, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to our 2017 Benefit Gala! We have much to celebrate tonight, as we are in the midst of one of the most exciting seasons in Berkeley Symphony history. We celebrate Joana’s innovative spirit, which has elevated the reputation of Berkeley Symphony throughout the world. We celebrate our brilliant musicians, whose dedication and

commitment to artistic excellence makes us proud. We celebrate the music of the extraordinary composers whose work we are honored to perform next season. We are thrilled to have Rufus Wainwright join us this evening to so generously share his tremendous artistry with us tonight. We are honored by his presence. And above all, we celebrate you, our loyal and passionate supporters, without whom Berkeley Symphony would cease to exist. We are forever grateful for your continued commitment and generosity.

FROM D.J. AND AUDREY GRUBB, GALA CO-CHAIRS

Welcome to this evening’s Berkeley Symphony Gala. Prepare yourself for an amazing night with friends and the incomparable Rufus Wainwright. He is an unofficial son of Berkeley and embodies our community and orchestra’s spirit in every way: uniquely talented, creative, smart and encouraging of everyone to share their talents.

We are here tonight because we care about classical music and how it awakens our imagination, enriches our lives, and compels us to think in new ways. Your steadfast and passionate support makes this celebration a reality. Thank you.

Our orchestra has been alive and well for almost 50 years. We both take our love of, and commitment to, Berkeley Symphony very seriously. It is a cultural gem serving and, in turn, made possible by our dedicated community. Your support preserves our symphony that showcases world-class musicians who share their talent and commitment with us.

In addition, Berkeley Symphony provides ongoing education and engagement for young people through its nationally-recognized Music in the Schools program in all Berkeley Unified School District elementary and middle schools. This program enables students to share their talents with us. Truly special.

RUFUS WAINWRIGHT

Praised by the New York Times for his “genuine originality,” Rufus Wainwright has established himself as one of the great male vocalists and songwriters of his generation. The New York-born, Montreal-raised singer songwriter has released seven studio albums, three DVDs,

and three live albums, including the fantastic Grammy nominated Rufus Does Judy at Carnegie Hall, which captured his celebrated Judy Garland tribute performance at the London Palladium in 2007, and the album Release The Stars which went Gold in Canada and the U.K.

In addition to being a celebrated contemporary pop singer, Rufus has made a name for himself in the classical world. His much acclaimed first opera, Prima Donna, premiered at the Manchester International Festival in July 2009. Now fully established as a composer of operas, Rufus has been commissioned by the Canadian Opera Company to write his second opera based on the story of the Roman Emperor Hadrian and Antinous. The new opera will premiere in Toronto in October 2018.

DIANNE NICOLINI

Dianne Nicolini has been a staple of Bay Area radio since joining Classical KKHI in 1983. She is currently the midday host of Classical KDFC (90.3, 89.9 and 104.9), a position she has held for 20 years. From 1988-1998, she was the host of the nationally syndicated broadcasts of the

San Francisco Symphony. Now she can be heard internationally on the SF Opera broadcasts. Dianne is a native of Oakland where she still resides with her husband, James Hanson, a Children’s Hospital pediatrician.

Siwash Lake Wilderness Resort, a lodge that embodies the adventurous spirit of the Gold Rush settlers who came to the region more than 150 years ago, rests in British Columbia’s Cariboo wilderness, Canada cowboy country. Along with the palpable pioneering spirit here, a deep communion with nature infuses every aspect of the experience. The log-built ranch house seems hewn from the surrounding forest. Ingredients for your meals are harvested from the working farm and gardens. The horse is the preferred mode of transportation. Venturing out into the 80,000 acres of surrounding countryside can instantly feel like an expedition into a bygone era. Spend your days channeling your inner frontiersman, roaming the many miles of trail on horseback or foot. Or stay close to the ranch, soaking in the serenity of Lake Siwash and immersing yourself in the unspoiled scenery of Canada’s Wild West.

Guests will choose one of the following unique experiences as part of their adventure: Forage for ingredients in the nearby wilderness with Executive Chef Derek Bendig, and then join him in the house kitchen to make a wild salad with them. Practice fly casting with an angling expert and prepare your fresh catch with the help of Chef Bendig. Or, ride horseback on a full-day trail excursion with a private guide, pausing to enjoy a lunch cooked over an open fire high atop a scenic mountain bluff.

205 “Hardy the Obscure” — A Salon with Richard Collier

“He was a man who used to notice such things.”

For Virginia Woolf, the English novelist and poet Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) is “a powerful imagination, a profound and poetic genius, a gentle and humane soul.” Although immensely influential on writers of his own and the following generation, Hardy today is largely unappreciated. For his eighth Berkeley Symphony salon, Richard Collier (UC Berkeley English Department 1969-1976) will introduce us to Hardy’s novels (with Jude the Obscure) and a selection of his lyric poems.

Richard will offer this salon twice, on September 17, 2017, from 2:30 to 5:00 at the home of Susan and Jim Acquistapace, and again on February 26, 2018.

216 1982 Pichon Lalande, Pauillac

“One of the monumental wines of the last century is the 1982 Pichon Lalande. Since bottling, it has flirted with perfection, […] and it retains all its glossy, rich, flamboyant cassis fruit, chocolaty, berry jam-like notes, and plenty of earthy, foresty flavors. This is a full-bodied, extravagantly rich Pichon Lalande seemingly devoid of acidity and tannin, but the wine is incredibly well-balanced and pure.”

217 1983 Pichon Lalande, Pauillac “Consistently one of the great wines of the 1983

vintage, as well as one of my personal favorites, this beautiful wine has been gorgeous to drink since bottling. It displays no signs of evolution, although it remains undeniably rich, seductive, and compelling. Deep dark ruby-colored, with a huge nose of Asian spices, blackcurrants, plums, and flowers, this super-concentrated, velvety-textured wine reveals gobs of rich, creamy fruit.”

– Robert Parker, the Wine Advocate (Rating: 94)
