Dear Colleagues,

It is a great pleasure for me to address to a young auditory of medical doctors, dentists, pharmacists, scientists and lecturers. The International Congress of Medical Science is an important academic event for students and young doctors. This forum gives the young scientists the chance to report their achieve-ments, exchange views, gain experience, strike up a friendship. It is not easy to explain the way to success in the scientific career. It needs hard work, analytical mind, watchful-ness, enthusiasm and even good luck. It needs also internal balance that gives the strength to accept defeat and triumph as well as triumph after defeat. The idea and invention in science are individual ability. But as the scientific process becomes more complicated, the team work in science is inevitable. The ability of the team workers in present science is a precondition for bet-ter results. The international teams give chance and better atmosphere to every serious scientist and guarantee the final success of the scientific idea and its international recognition. The individual success will not be covered by the shade of the general achievement. The efforts of teams from dif-ferent countries, working over one and the same problem, is a very good practice nowadays. The mission of every high level university is to stimulate the students’ sci-entific strive. We are very proud that the Association of Medical Students in Bulgaria – Sofia together with the Students’ Council of Medical University – Sofia turned the tradional national students’ scientific sessions into Inter-national Congress of Medical Sciences for students and young doctors. We hope that this initiative is the basis for establishment of new international scientific teams.I wish you all fruitfull and successful work and not ending research enthu-siasm!

Correspondent Member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Professor Vanyo Mitev, MD, PhD, DSc

Rector of the Medical University - Sofia

Dear ICMS Participants,

It is the greatest pleasure and honor to welcome you all to the 13th Inter-national Congress of Medical Sciences for students and young doctors at the Medical University of Sofia.

For the past year, we have put huge efforts in providing you with an event that can reach up to the big expectations of our attendees – the curious students and young physicians. What you will witness in the next couple of days is the result of one year of hard work, dedication and motivation to offer you a contemporary event with high scientific value of oral and poster presentations, hands-on workshops, keynote lectures delivered by promi-nent scientists in their respected fields and various social activities.

Over 12 years ago, the ICMS has emerged from the National Student Sci-entific Session which already was the leading student-run congress on the national scale. Today, the ICMS hosts more than 500 registered partici-pants from 67 different universities and scientific institutions from over 40 countries! ICMS has grown to represent an interdisciplinary platform for international scientific exchange between students, postgraduates, doctors, academics from different fields of research and various cultures. And thanks to your support the ICMS has succeeded to write its name among the most prosperous, trusted and visited congresses on a global scale. We owe this success to you – our Participants!

We truly hope you enjoy your stay with us in Sofia and wish you an unfor-gettable experience with ICMS 2014!

Theme Event The Organizing Committee has decided the theme event of ICMS 2014 to be “Medicine Behind Molecules – What More Genes Can Tell Us”, thus putting emphasis on the progress made in the field of medical genetics, the advance in personalized medicine and the lat-est discoveries in neurogenetics, epigenetics, etc.

What he finds most fascinating about his research is that it has disease rel-evance and may be a therapeutically tractable target. His work is focused in an area of cell biology that is still not well understood and appears to have relevance to many areas of health and disease.

Keynote SpeakersProf. David Rubinzstein

“Autophagy and Neurodegeneration”

Prof. David Rubinzstein is The Head of the Depart-ment of Medical Genetics, University of Cambridge and Deputy Director of the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research. His team has been trying to discover novel components of the autophagy machinery and new sign-aling pathways and drugs that impact on autophagy.

Prof. Tomas J. Ekström“Epigenetics of Autoimmune Disease”

Prof. Tomas J. Ekström is a Professor of Molecular Cell Biology in the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at Karolinska University Hospital. The aim of his research is to integrate the genome and epigenome, to identify their respective contribution, and to increase the realchances of finding novel environmentally affected genesrelevant for diseases, which can indicate possible targets for prevention and intervention. It is fascinating that the combined epigenetic and ge-netic analyses may reveal the etiology and vulnerability to disease, and new therapeutic targets.
