Agenda item 3.2 Inclusion of New Media Types in
INIS/ETDE databases
13th Joint INIS/ETDE Technical Committee Meeting 20-21 October 2011, Vienna, Austria

New Media Types and ETDE
• Inclusion of new media types part of ETDE strategic plan
• From a policy perspective, agreement reached to include videos when possible; Already have several hundred US videos cited in ETDEWEB (some sent on to INIS by US); now have one Swiss video, too.
• Most US ones on YouTube or on lab websites

Current Multimedia Received
• US ones have mostly been lecture series, and catalogued as reports/conferences but starting to see more variety; Swiss one is an experiment in AVI format; little harder to find viewers to display this.
• Currently, in US processing, these are not being done as AV document types, but rather as a setting for media type

ETDE Processing, Videos
• While the existing ‘F’ document type does refer to audiovisual materials, current systems in ETDE are not set up to handle this type appropriately, as there was no expectation ‘full text’ would really be offered.
• ETDE TWG meeting participants to discuss topic on Wednesday. Any TWG conclusions will be shared at the JTC.

Discussion
• Do JTC members support the inclusion of videos in the INIS and ETDE databases?
• Members are welcomed to share whether videos are becoming common for scientific communication in their countries and what formats seem to predominate.

Datasets
• Also noted at the TWG meeting, the US is beginning to receive dataset submissions, as this is also considered useful information for scientists.
• First datasets processed have ‘landing’ pages, such that a user sees additional information about the dataset; there would then be an option to view the data, which may be stored in a number of ways.

Datasets Continued
• Interest in direct access to datasets is growing within the U.S.; in the DOE ECD database now, but not elsewhere, yet.
• Will also share any conclusions reached at TWG
• JTC views on dataset inclusion in INIS and ETDE databases is welcomed
