HONOR OUR BEGINNING BRIDGE PLAYERS
Dana Harbor Bridge Center has about 540 to 550 members, as well as many people
who come to DHBC for lessons, or who belong to other bridge centers. We continue
to do well because of our loyal members, but especially because of our newcomers
and Intermediate players who allow DHBC to grow. Our beginning bridge teachers -
Dae Leckie, Trudi Hanscom, Jane Dober and Sally Pelmear - have all contributed
greatly to DHBC by fostering an enthusiasm for and love of bridge in newcomers.
Over the last several years we have seen many, many players come in as newcomers
completely unfamiliar with a bidding box (including myself), and who have become
regular players who can now help other newcomers play and enjoy the game. A large
number have moved up to play in Open Games, and are now going to compete
successfully in tournaments. Marti Mossawir, Dae Leckie, and Trudi Hanscom assist
players who are just entering duplicate bridge play. Sharon Rippy and Jane Dober
have established very successful mentoring program. The mentoring program
facilitates players improving their skills, and moving into higher point range
games. Jane Dober and Sally Pelmear provide classes for intermediate/advanced
players. The transformation is exciting to see.
DHBC now has about two-thirds of its members who are in the Non-Life Master
category. This does not include many of our players who love the game, but have not
yet joined our association - the American Contract Bridge League. (www.acbl.org)

The goal of our club, is to provide a positive playing environment, for all who want to
play. While playing in the open section may be a goal for many, we realize that not
everyone has that goal. We strive to make our games meet everyone’s needs.
We have monthly Unit Games on the third Sunday of each month - the next one is
Sunday August 17, 2014. Susan Kissinger, Diane Velick and Gale Senter organize
these events, and provide an outstanding lunch. Lunch is at 12:30, and the game is at
1 PM. On August 17, DHBC will be honoring our newcomer and intermediate
players. These players are in fact, the life blood of DHBC. Please come and
encourage your partners to come as well. These Unit Games are a lot of fun, and the
food is delicious. The price for this Unit Game on August 17, 2014 will be $5 for
those playing in the Non-Life Master section. To better plan this event, we are asking
those who wish to play in the Non-Life Master event to call Judy Elbogen at 949-233-
6655 to register. If enough players with 0-20 points register, there will be a 0-20
section.

LEARN BRIDGE IN A DAY
On Sunday, September 28, 2014, the Saddleback Unit and DHBC will jointly be
sponsoring a class called Learn Bridge in a Day. Margie Michelin and Susan Bristol
of Saddleback, have been spearheading this effort. They have obtained a grant
from ACBL to subsidize this program. This will include bringing in Patty Tucker to
teach the class. Brochures are at DHBC with details, and information on how to
enroll.
We are asking members to do two very important activities. First, recruit
family members and friends who would like to learn how to play bridge, and get
them to enroll in the class. Second, volunteer to help us. This can be done in
several ways. We will need mentors and other assistants (e.g., make desserts,
serve lunch, sign in learners) on September 28. We also need help in identifying
and getting flyers out to schools, senior centers, fitness centers, and other
locations.

Ely Culbertson was involved heavily in the promotion of the
game of bridge in the United States to such a degree that he would visualize and imagine promotional means to increase the popularity of this evolving game among the residents of the United States, especially on the East Coast. One of his more bizarre attempts at promoting the game, but also at the same time slyly convincing the news broadcasters, news reporters and news organizations to grant free publicity was his challenge "Kibitzing the Kibitzers", as reported in newspapers and on radio stations around the end of October 1931. The newspaper articles were rather unanimous in their reporting of the challenge in their news columns as in the following article. Note that the sum of US$10,000.00 in the year 1931 is calculated to be about US$145,000.00 in 2014. In other words ... a fortune. == NEWS SCRIBES TO PLAY - CARD SHARKS WRITE Kibitzing the kibitzers, or the Bridge Experts Revenge, is Ely Culbertson's own melodramatic title for his latest idea, a tournament exclusively for newspaper men. The announcement was made today by the man, who is so convinced that he has the best system of making Grand Slams, that he has wagered US$10,000 that he can beat Sidney Lenz, exponent of a rival system, with one eye closed and one hand behind his back. "Newspaper men are the world's greatest kibitzers", he said, "and they have written a lot of strange stories about us bridge experts. Now we are going to get our revenge." "I am inviting all newspaper and news association bridge players to take part in the first tournament of its kind. November 7, 1931. Some of the world's greatest bridge stars will be on the side lines as professional kibitzers." "Then, to reverse the roles completely, these experts will write their own accounts of the skillful maneuvering, if any, of the newspaper players..... end quoted article. Committee ruling: 4♠ doubled by West,

Facts: The director was summoned to the
table during the auction. North passed almost
immediately after the 4♠ bid by West. North
agreed that he did not wait an appropriate length
of time before passing. West felt that North’s
haste to pass gave South UI.
Director’s Ruling: The table director reviewed
the circumstances of the auction with three other
senior directors and the DIC of the event, as well
as two other players of a similar skill level to
North- South.
Four of the six interviewed would have
doubled or bid with the South hand. The director
ruled that the table result stood, 4♠ by West,
North South minus 450.
The Appeal: East-West appealed the ruling.
Because only East appeared at the hearing, the
Appeals Committee ruled based on the testimony
of East and the director that it was established at
the table that there was a fast pass by North of
4♠, even though West had used the stop card.
This constituted UI for South.

The Decision: The Appeals Committee found
that the fast pass demonstrably suggested that
pass would likely be more successful than bidding
on.
Therefore, the committee needed to determine
whether there was any logical alternative to pass.
Unfortunately, the committee did not know the
skill level of North-South. The committee,
however, thought that enough players would
seriously consider that double was a logical
alternative, a finding in accord with the polled
panel. East presented evidence that out of 104
scores, there were approximately 12 scores of
plus 690 for East-West and a few 5♦ contracts for
North-South.
The committee further determined that if South
doubles, North would likely pass. There was no
reason to change the actual number of tricks
taken.
Accordingly, the result was changed to 4♠
doubled by West, making five, East-West plus 690
and North-South minus 690.

YOU JUST NEVER KNOW
A bridge instructor is quite attentive and alert to the actions of his beginning students in the bridge
room. He has done his best to explain several basics of the game and how the auction should
proceed. The instruction ended when there were no additional questions from the participating
students.
The practice play period begins with enormous and eager anticipation by those present.
On the very first practice board East is the dealer and all tables reach a final contract of 4 Spades
by North. All but one table. The bridge instructor is rather surprised, if not confused, since it was
one of the very fundamental guidelines of his class instructions, namely when to open 1 No Trump.
He approaches the table and inquires as to how the bidding went. East explained that he did not
have sufficient values for an opening bid and passed, which the instructor stated was correct.
South followed with the same explanation, as did West. Both passed. However, North also passed.
The bridge instructor was amazed and inquired of North, who held a perfect No Trump holding of
17 points and which contained a four-card Spade suit, why he also passed.
North turned to the bridge instructor and answered that he was only following the instructions
provided during the class. The bridge instructor was even more taken aback by this explanation
and inquired as to what North had understood from the provided instructions.
North looks at the bridge instructor and answered: "because you told us that the bidding was over
after three consecutive passes, and that he was then forced to pass."

THINKING OF MOVING UP TO PLAY IN THE OPEN?
A NEW PROGRAM FOR THE PLAYERS WHO ANSWER YES TO THIS QUESTION: This is an advanced Mentor/Mentee Program, open to advanced/ intermediate duplicate bridge players at
Dana Harbor.
Guidelines: 1. During the months of September, October and November a Life Master will advise a
“Mentee/Mover”, by playing with them 2-3 times at Dana Harbor in an "Open" game Monday through
Saturday.
2. The “Mentee/Mover” will guarantee he/she will play in the open game at Dana Harbor, at least 3 other
times, during this time period, with someone other than their “Adviser”. Monday through Friday, the
Saturday game does not count.
3. There is no fee other than regular table fees, the mentor receives a free play on the day that they play
with the “Mentee/Mover”.
THE GOAL of this program is to give the non-open player, a positive playing experience by the way of
a gentle transition into the game. The mentor & mentee should meet before the game to go over their
convention card, and take some time after the games to review any challenging hands.
This is the 3rd session of this new program and I have had wonderful feedback and positive suggestions
from both mentors & mentees.
This program is “Open” to 10 non-life masters, this fall, and to 10 players again January 2015.
A non-life master may participate in the program once.
The program is full for September. If you would like to put your name on the
waiting list or sign-up for January….

Teams game on the Second Thursday of each month, but do not have a partner or a team, please

Please indicate whether you want to play in the Open section, or the NLM section. It is also important
to indicate whether your interest is for Wednesday night or for the Thursday NLM or for the
Thursday Eight is Enough game. Include your name, email address and telephone number. Richard

list of players looking for a partner or team. The list will provide the contact information of all that
have expressed interest. Inclusion on the list does not commit you to play on a regular basis or on

Today’s declarer needed entries to dummy, but none was visible to the naked eye. At
four spades, he took the ace of clubs, led the queen of trumps to East’s king, ruffed
the club return and led the jack of trumps.
East won and carefully led a diamond. South won, took the 10 of trumps and two
more diamonds, and exited with a trump to East’s nine. But East produced a club,
and South had to ruff and lose a heart to the king. Down one.
South succeeds if he conjures up a dummy entry. At trick two he leads the Queen of
hearts. If East wins, South can reach dummy with the jack to lead a trump to his
queen. He ruffs his ace of hearts in dummy to lead a second trump. East gets two
trumps and a heart.
It won’t help East to duck the queen of hearts. Then South takes the ace and ruffs his
last heart, losing only three trump tricks.
