Little Inti Mallon’s brokenheart over the theft of herfavourite teddy bear, has beenmended thanks to thegenerosity of Levin manFrancis Wilson.

Mr Wilson had been awayfor a few days and when hereturned and cleared his mailbox, he sat down with a cuppato read back issues of hisnewspapers. When he spottedthe story in the HorowhenuaChronicle about the theft, hisheart sunk a little.

“I looked at the little stuffeddog that sat on my TV, silly asit sounds the dog had given mea lot of pleasure just sittingthere.

“I thought, I bet you wouldmake her happy. I decided totake it to the HorowhenuaChronicle office and ask themto pass it on to her. I realisethat it is not the same as theteddy bear that got stolen, butif it brings a smile to her face,that is all that is important,” hesaid.

Inti’s mother Tara wascontacted and told of MrWilson’s gift. When theyarrived at the office and thecuddly dog, wearing aChristmas hat, was handed toher, Inti’s face lit up and that

put a smile on everyone's face.The stolen bear has not

been returned and Ms Mallonis not confident it will be. She

said they had experienced thetheft of a treasured femaleteddy bear immaculatelydressed. She was taken from

the bottom of a blue doublestroller, from two sweet three-year-olds, at the LevinAdventure Park.

“Although she has not beenreturned, kindness, empathyand aroha has yet againglowed from Horowhenuapeople,” she said. “Dave Key(radio DJ) and his team havebeen truly impressive, callingfor Teddy's return live on air.”

Caring people haveexpressed their ‘condolences’.

The original teddy bear wasgiven to Inti for the PlunketChildren's Day Teddy Bears’Picnic, last January and MsMallon says she will ensure“Christmas Dog” enjoys thenext picnic.

“It is nice to treat someoneas you would like to betreated,” she said. “It is evengreater to treat people as youknow, they would like to betreated.”

She said thank yousincerely to all concerned.

Anti-rail stanceAfter reading from The Left

dated 18th July I am moreconvinced than ever that thepresent Government has ananti-rail stance. Saying that re-opening the Napier Gisbornerailway is not viable butimproving SH35 for heavytransport is doesn’t make sense.With the Hawke’s Bay RegionalCouncil prepared to put up $5.5million to re-open the line whatis the government’s problem? Itwill be far quicker, cheaper andeasier to re-open the railwaythan try to improve the 335kmsof SH 35. The latter will takeyears, even decades to getstarted let alone complete.

It’s obvious the governmentare pandering to the roadtransport industry by allowingthe size and weight of trucks toincrease beyond what the NZroading system can cope with. Ihave lost count of the number of8 or 9 axle trucks I have seencrossing the centre line onbends, curves and intersectionsbecause they are too long andincapable of negotiating theroad any other way.

My guess is that thegovernment make more moneyout of the Road Transportindustry through road usercharges than they do from therailways. It would be alright ifall of this money was ploughedback into national roading notjust Auckland.

Safer in hospitalAnaesthetists at Palmerston NorthHospital are improving the qualityof care provided to patients while intheatre by using a system calledSAFERsleep to improve theaccuracy of records kept and drugadministration. The SAFERsleepsystem has been found to reducethe incidence of drug error by 35%.Before being administered, drugsare delivered in barcoded syringesand scanned into the system. Thiswill provide anaesthetists visualand audio confirmation of whatdrug is being used before it isadministered.Another aspect of SAFERsleep isthat it is a record-keeping systemthat can be used from the Pre-operative Clinic through to the PostAnaesthetic Care Unit (PACU). It isa way of recording vital signs, whattypes of drugs were administeredduring an operation, and anycomplications that may havearisen. There will be a touch screencomputer in each operating theatreas well as tablets, which can betaken to do pre-operative bedsideassessments. Eventually it will belinked to a national database.

Flu jabs still availableAbout a quarter of MidCentralDistrict Health Board’s populationhas received the influenzavaccination this winter, and there isstill time to receive it. Theprogramme - free for people aged65 years and over, pregnantwomen, people with long termhealth conditions such as severeasthma, and children under fiveyears who have been hospitalisedfor a respiratory illness - has beenextended until the end of August.The vaccination is available at GPsor GP practice teams, UnichemLevin Pharmacy, TararuaPharmacy and Horowhenua HealthCentre Pharmacy.

Law changewelcomedThe NZ Transport Agency iswelcoming news that Parliamenthas voted to lower the legal bloodalcohol limit from 80 to 50milligrams of alcohol per 100millilitres of blood for drivers agedover 20.

Transport Agency Road SafetyDirector Ernst Zollner says thechange will save lives and preventserious injuries, with more than1500 deaths and 6700 seriousinjuries sustained in alcohol-related crashes on New Zealandroads in the past 10 years.

Mr Zollner said the lower bloodalcohol limit also brings NewZealand law into line with thelimits already in place in themajority of other OECD countries.

In 2006 Horowhenua DistrictCouncil “sold” the HorowhenuaArt Society an old workman’sshed for $1 and agreed to rentpublic garden land to them for$125 plus tax annually for 25years.

The society raised $200,000through community fundraisingand the Horowhenua Art Societycommunity art centre was born.

On April 12, 2008 HorowhenuaMayor Brendan Duffy cut theribbon officially opening thesociety’s permanent home at 119Bath Street.

Horowhenua Learning Centrecreated a 22-week course for

young unemployed peoplewanting to learn a trade whichprovided the manpower andknowhow to transform the lowlyshed into an amazing communityfacility.

The art centre has a studio andpublic gallery with local work ondisplay.

The studio is in use most dayswith Neil Perfect tutoringdrawing two days a week,Dorothy Burt offering herexpertise on painting eachFriday, Lynne Neustroski doingwatercolour classes on Mondayafternoons and members helpingmembers the rest of the week.

Volunteers man the gallerywhere work is for sale.

COLIN Maxwell Smeed was given a warrior’s farewell as Horowhenua College students performed aheart-wrenching haka in front of the hearse carrying Mr Smeed to his final resting place. Mr Smeedhad taught at the school for 35-years and was highly respected by staff and students alike. Hisfuneral service was held at Horowhenua College hall Friday.

Spot the cop, Central District canexpect to see some new colour onthe roads alongside the regularmarked police patrol cars.

Central District received two oftheir four new coloured patrol cars(two red and two orange) whichwill join the rest of the regularmarked Highway Patrol fleetoperating across the entireDistrict.

The new highly visible vehicleswere trialled during the “SaferSummer 2013/2014” campaign andtheir purpose is to increasevisibility and road safetyawareness.

Officer in charge of CentralDistrict Highway Patrol, SeniorSergeant Kris Burbery said thecoloured vehicles provide apowerful visual reminder of thePolice presence on our roads andin our communities. It is hopedthat they will generate publicdiscussion about road safetyissues, as agencies work togetherto drive down deaths and injurieson our roads.

“We take pride in having ahighly visible Highway Patrol andRoad Policing Group, and we areoften talked about in a positiveway by drivers and road usersabout our presence,” Mr Burberysaid.

Highway Patrol staff operateacross the entire Central Districtand strictly enforce the speedlimits and road userresponsibilities.

“These new vehicles will bedeployed in a tactical way withinthe District and motorists drivingon our roads can expect to seethem on a regular basis. They alsomake the point that any vehicle ofthis colour may be a Police vehicle,in keeping with our philosophy

that you could be stoppedanywhere, anytime.” Mr Burberysaid.

The coloured vehicles enhancethe current range of tools andtactics used by Police to reducespeeding, drink driving and otherunsafe behaviour that puts all of us

at risk on the roads.“I also want to remind

motorists that while officers areout there keeping our roads safe24/7, road safety is everyone’sresponsibility, and we all have aresponsibility to drive safe,” MrBurbery said.

Harmonious hootenannyExpect a high-energy hootenanny withharmonies to boot at Levin’s folk clubtonight when Wellington musicians, RobJoass and friends take to the stage.

Joass will be well known to many withhis bands Hobnail Boots and The Shot Band.This professional musician of some 20 yearsstanding has won many awards over theyears and has had his songs covered bybands throughout the English-speakingworld.

He will be showcasing his latest CDrelease, “Black and White” at tonight’sconcert.

Filling out some of Rob’s arrangementswill be the wonderful Kim Bonnington onvocals and guitar, and Cameron ‘Dusty’Burnell on vocals and mandolin.

Bonnington cites her biggest influencesas Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss andGillian Welch — and has a voice to match.

Dusty Cameron appeared at the clubearlier this year with Taranaki’s The Fedzbut has now relocated to the capital. Heoriginally grew up in the far North learning

to play Blues and Folk standards but hasalso played in Irish, rock and punk bands.

We all know that brushing our teeth every day is the best way to keep ourmouths healthy and to avoid the dreaded dentist’s drill! Unfortunately ourpets can’t brush and floss; they rely on us to keep their teeth and gumsin top condition.

Research has shown that by the age of 3, up to 80% of dogs and catswill have signs of dental disease. Plaque accumulates on teeth aftereating; without treatment, this plaque will mix with saliva and bacteria inthe mouth to form thick layers of tartar that accumulate on the teeth andcause gingivitis (inflammation, redness and swelling of the gums). If leftuntreated, the gums will recede to expose the tooth roots and eventuallyyour pet will develop an infection around the teeth, and then looseteeth. Bacteria from an infected mouth may then spread through thebloodstream and cause damage to other vital organs, such as the heart,liver and kidneys.

It is not always easy to look in your pet’s mouth, so here are some signsto watch out for:

• Decreased appetite

• Dropping food when eating

• Dribbling saliva

• Smelly breath

• Poor grooming or a matted coat in cats

• Preferring soft food rather than dry biscuits

Method:

1. Preheat oven to 180⁰C. Heat oil in a large flameproof,ovenproof dish over medium heat.

2. In the ovenproof dish cook onion and bacon for 2 mins.Add chicken and cook for 3-4 mins. Add garlic, lemon rind,rosemary (and chilli if desired) and cook for a further 2 mins.Add rice then cook, stirring for 1 minute.

3. Mix tomato paste and Campbell’s Real Stock in a jug and stirwell to combine. Pour over rice.

4. Move dish to the oven and bake covered, for 35 mins or untilrice is just tender and liquid has almost been absorbed.

GRADUATED DRIVER LICENSING SYSTEM WELCOMED BY NZTAThe NZ Transport Agency iswelcoming today’sconfirmation of changes to NewZealand’s Graduated DriverLicensing System aimed atimproving the safety of novicedrivers and motorcyclists.

The changes announced onWednesday by Associate

Minister of Transport MichaelWoodhouse will for the firsttime, set a time limit on newlearner and restricted car andmotorcycling licences toencourage drivers and riders toprogress to the next licencestage within five years.

Drivers or riders who don’t

move on to the next stagewithin five years will need topass another theory test torenew their learner licence.Transport Agency Road SafetyDirector Ernst Zollner said theintroduction of a time limit foreach of the learner andrestricted licence stages will

encourage novice drivers andmotorcyclists to progress to afull licence within a reasonabletimeframe.

“The purpose of theGraduated Driver LicensingSystem is for novice driversand riders to progress from alearner to a full licence by

gradually gaining the skillsand experience needed to drivesafely, and to demonstrate thatthey have gained those skills bypassing practical driving testson the way to gaining a fulllicence.

The new rules will come intoforce from December 1.

Awkward punctuation means the fulland correct name of this car is Kiapro_cee’d GT.

And it’s obviously a little uncomfortableabout that because Kia and GT is the onlynomenclature to be found anywhere on theexterior. The pro_cee’d identification isreserved for the inner door sills.

So lets just call it the Kia GT and thenenthuse in discovering the GT badging sitscomfortably on a stylish, brisk andconfident handling compact coupe thattakes the Kia brand somewhere it’s neverbeen before.

The $43,990 Euro-sourced GT isn’t Kia’sfirst attempt at a sporty car but it’s the mostconvincing. The new Cerato Koup hasattractive styling, similar dimensions andpricing and now shares the 1.6-litre GDidirect injection turbo engine with the GT.But its different character is evident withina few kilometres behind the wheel.

The difference becomes significantthrough the corners where a moresophisticated multi-link rear suspension (inplace of the Koup’s torsion beam axle),larger brakes and high grip Michelin PilotSport3 tyres give the GT a much sharperperformance focus.

Kia’s 1591cc direct injectionturbocharged engine develops anenthusiastic 150kW at 6000rpm while strongmid-range torque peaks at 265Nm between1750-4500rpm to ensure keen overtakingresponse and urge out of slower corners. Afree-flow dual exit exhaust also produces amore purposeful engine note than the Koup.

The other significant difference betweenKia GT and Koup is the manual-onlygearbox choice for the GT. The six-speederhas a short throw and accurate shiftmechanism with the ratios nicely matchedto the torque delivery so 100km/h cruisingis achieved at 2500rpm in sixth gear withdownshifts to 3000rpm in fifth and 3600rpmin fourth.

Direct injection also brings reasonablefuel efficiency to the GT with a claimedfigure of 7.4 litres per 100km — my road testachieved 8.1L/100km.

The GTs suspension provides taut bodycontrol but can soak up the bumps andcamber changes of Kiwi rural roads andhighways with well-sorted compliance.

The brakes are up to some moredemanding work in the twisty stuff and theMichelin Pilot Sport3 tyres are one of thebest aspects of the driving dynamics withhigh grip cornering and steering feedback.

You sit low in the GT and one of thetreats you won’t find in the Koup are theleather and suede-trimmed, red stitch

highlighted Recaro chairs with plenty ofside bolster and lower back support.

Manual cushion height and slide/reclineadjustments combine with a power lumbarsupport adjuster for the driver and theleather trimmed steering wheel has rakeand reach adjustment.

Apart from the agile and lively drivingexperience, the other highlights of the GTare its neatly proportioned coupe design —with some eye-catching details such as the“ice-cube” LED daytime running lights —and the comprehensive specification.

The GT has a low and wide stance andlooks aggressively planted on the road withthe 225/40 R18 tyres and stylish dual-tonealloys filling out the wheel arches. Thewaistline rises steeply while the roofline isfast and is extended by a rear spoiler.There’s something perhaps borrowed fromthe Volvo V30 and V40 in those muscularrear haunches.

Inside there’s reasonable headroom witha rear seat that doesn’t have a great deal of

shape and support but the kneeroom isuseful and footwell space benefits fromhaving an almost flat floor.

Visibility from the back seat with thesmall side windows and large front seats isrestricted but a centre rear seat belt takesthe practicality of the GT one step beyondthe 2+2 layout of most small coupes andthere are three top tethers for child seatsand two ISOFIX mounting points.

A 60/40 split fold rear seat backrestallows a respectable 380 litres of cargo spaceto be expanded to 1225 litres.

Unlike the Koup — which is a two-doorcar with a boot — the GT is a three-doorliftback design. One thing you’ll discover onopening the hatch is the GT is the only Kiamodel that doesn’t carry a full-size sparewheel — there’s a skinny space saver.

The standard specification for the GTfeatures the Recaro front seats which areheated, a leather three-spoke steering wheeland a configurable dash display with a“GT” mode having a large tachometer,

digital speedometer and displays showingturbo boost and torque output.

Excellent Xenon headlights and tyrepressure monitoring are standard and areverse camera shows its image in part ofthe rear vision mirror.

Other standard features include dualzone air conditioning, rear park sensor,rain sensor wipers, proximity key withpush-button engine start and a electronicpush-button park brake.

Sharp looking and accessibly pricedcoupes with punchy turbo performance, aslick manual gearbox and a grippy,informative chassis aren’t exactlycommonplace these days and Kia has theopportunity for some niche success andbrand building with the accomplished GT.

A rather silly name is the only thing thiscar has to be uncomfortable about.

The trick is to call it the Kia GT — and toenjoy the work of an ambitious carcompany doing something it’s never donebefore.

GARDENS can be affected by compost which may have chemical; herbicides in it.

Green Waste centres have noidea if organic material theytake in are contaminated withchemical herbicides. Peopledumping their grass clippingsare not going to say. LawnMowing Contractors may ormay not know.

The recyclers turn the greenwaste into compost and sell itdirectly to you the homegardener or sell it to majorgarden companies to supplygarden shops in theircompany’s branded bags.

Another problem can be thatmaybe most of the bags ofcompost you buy are safebecause they happen to be freeof herbicides then the next timethe same company’s bags aredeadly.

I only know of two brandsthat I have never heard ofproblems from and that isDaltons Composts andOderings. I think Yates are okbut not sure.

I was told by a green wasterecyclers that it takes up to 18months of compost turning, toleach out the herbicides andmake the material safe foraround sensitive plants!

If you buy some compostthat you are not sure of there isa simple test you can do beforeyou spread it all around yourgardens.

Take a little of the compostout of each bag and place into aseedling tray. Plant some beanseeds into the mix andgerminate. If the seeds don’tgerminate then you need torepeat the same but also using acontrol medium such as soilfrom your garden in anothertray to prove the seeds aregood.

If containing herbicide, thenew growths will come upstunted and distorted whichmeans it’s very likely thatherbicide is in the compost.Take the bags back to the seller,

complain and get a refund.Please let me know the

brand so I can warn othergardeners.

Is herbicide affectedcompost safe to use aroundnon-sensitive wellestablished plants, shrubsand trees?

The short answer is no as itdoes affect a healthy plant evenif not visible signs are noticed.

The first sign is yellowing inleaves but that may not happenfor sometime.

Don’t put herbicide treatedlawn clippings into your own

compost bin or on yourgardens. If you have a wastearea dump them thereotherwise don’t collect theclippings just leave them to bio-degrade back into your lawnwhere you may get more killingof weeds for your money.

All chemical herbicides canbe a solution for fast weedremoval but can also havedrastic consequences.

The proof is in the puddingas my mum used to say; so Iwould like to share this snippetfrom overseas with you: Twoyears ago conventional media

used a meta-analysis byStanford University to castdoubt on the value of anorganic diet. This despite thefact that the analysis whichlooked at 240 studies comparingorganically and conventionallygrown food found that organicfoods are less contaminatedwith agricultural chemicals.

In an effort to further clarifythe 2012 findings, a group ofEuropean scientists recentlyevaluated an even greaternumber of studies, 343 in all,published over the last severaldecades. Here’s what theyfound.

Not only do organic foodshave more nutrients, includingcancer-fighting antioxidants,but they also contain far fewerpesticide residues. This is a no-brainer given thatmonoculture chemical andGMO farmers kill the soil withtoxic chemicals and climate-destabilizing nitratefertilizerwhile organic farmersfeed the soil with compost,nurturing the soil food web.

But the key nutritionaldifference betweenconventional and organics?Anywhere from 18 to 69 percent more antioxidants.

This is a very good reason togrow more of your own fruitand vegetables naturally thisspring.
