By TANYA WOOD Horowhenua District Council has given a Levin resident an extra four weeks to remove the roses and small lemon trees he planted on his berm two years ago, or they will be removed by council contractors at his cost. John Ryersson planted the eight standard Iceberg roses, three Meyer lemon trees and some buxus hedging in 2011 to beautify the area outside his Tasman Street home and is perplexed by the council’s change of policy that appears ‘‘totally inconsistent’’. ‘‘When I contacted council back in 2011, I was told by someone in its planning department [from memory] that, although council didn’t encourage planting on berms, a little light planting would probably be okay but defin- itely no large trees,’’ he said. ‘‘I have since been told by another person in council they were concerned about who would look after the plants if I left the property. But what about all the other plants and trees on council berms? ‘‘Will other residents in my road, and residents in Saxton Street, Dudley Street and Kings Drive to name just a few, be also faced with the cost of removing plants and some very substantial trees on their berms?’’ Mr Ryersson said the letter he received from the council last month stated, ‘‘Council does not allow any private planting in the road reserve.’’ He said Downer contractors marking the road recently for laying broadband fibre optic cable, told him the plants would not affect the cable. ‘‘I was told I may only have to remove two plants but could put them back after the cable was laid,’’ he said. Contractors completing cable laying in the street this week were great to deal with and it wasn’t a problem for them, Mr Ryersson said. Council roading manager Kevin Peel said the council was responsible for managing the district’s transport corri- dor (also known as the road reserve) and that included the berm or grass verge. New legislation which came into force in January 2012 — the National Code of Practice for Utility Operator’s Access to Transport Corridors — requires councils to tighten up control of corridors to ensure utilities have access to install, maintain and upgrade any network infra- structure. Mr Peel said it was also the council’s responsibility to ensure vegetation did not impede visibility when exiting a driveway and it received many calls about overhanging branches and trees on private properties causing a nuisance to pedestrians. Additional planting on berms would add to this problem, he said. ‘‘Berms with extensive plantings could also cause issues for future house- holders and council contractors unable to mow the berm properly and the plants would then need to be removed at council’s expense,’’ he said. ‘‘Council acknowledges Mr Ryersson has put considerable time and effort into planting; however, it is at odds with the what the code states is the purpose of the corridor. ‘‘The planting was only brought to our attention recently and we have now extended the time by another month for Mr Ryersson to remove the plants. Coun- cil will at the end of this time remove any remaining plants.’’ Mr Ryersson said he would be going to the Ombudsman about what he said was the council’s lack of consistency and fairness before he did any plant pulling. ‘‘I’ve spent a lot of time and money on something I love doing and I just want to be left alone with my plants,’’ he said. The council has given Mr Ryersson until December 18 to remove his plants.

Connection supporterOn Friday evening the Capital Connectionwas delayed due to a mechanical fault, leaving its passengers waiting on theplatform. I used the opportunity to take aphoto (above) of all the people waiting touse this vital service to the Horowhenuaand Manawatu.

These people, and more (given this wastaken 15 minutes before its usual departuretime), are among those beingdisadvantaged by Nathan Guy MP, GerryBrownlee MP, and the NZTA’s refusal tosubsidise this train service as all othercommuter rail services are subsidised, e.g.the 60 Wairarapa train services each week.

The recent, and future, fare increases(15 per cent in the last year) are purely tomake-up for the service’s lack of subsidyand will only serve to drive people awayfrom the service and ultimately from theregion.

Considering that many of these peopleare from the Kapiti Coast and the Horo-whenua, i.e. Nathan Guy’s Otaki Elector-ate, he needs to stop towing the NationalParty’s road obsessed party line and do theright thing for his constituents and hiscommunity. Road projects tend to bedescribed as expressways and bypasses;whereas train services are always a series

of destinations, linking communities notbypassing them.

If the Capital Connection train serviceis cancelled, Nathan Guy and the NationalParty’s spin likely will be that nobody usedit here are some of the nobodies — not

shown in the photo are their families andwider communities that benefit from thistrain service.

STREET SOUNDS: Christina Anplays a Chopin melody.

By TANYAWOOD

It must be summer when the tinkling ofivories can be heard along Levin’s OxfordSt. The Kings Sound Centre piano is backon the street for a second year, for anyonewho wants to belt out a good tune or justfancies having a go.

Passersby were treated to a ChopinEtude Opus by Christina An, from the $2Dollar Shop, when the piano was rolledout for the first time on Wednesday thisweek.

The music teacher, who majored inpiano in her native Korea, says it’s funand exciting to be able to play outside.

‘‘I love playing for myself and for

people to stop and listen.’’Kings Sound Centre owner Paul King

said the piano was popular with hundredsof people last year playing everythingfrom chopsticks to Beethoven so it was ano-brainer to do it again this year.

‘‘It just adds a wonderful atmosphere tothe street and we’ll be rolling out the pianoevery day it’s fine over the summer.’’

He said a charity box would be on top ofthe piano again and local charities shouldcontact him if they wish to be on the list toreceive the collections.

TOP EFFORTS: The first graduate machinists of the pilot Swazi training school show off some of the garments they designed before startingfulltime employment with the outdoor clothing firm next week. From left: Jojo Hepi, Delwyn Mita and Karen Griffen.

By TANYAWOOD

Twelve weeks ago Jojo Hepi,Delwyn Mita and Karen Griffencouldn’t sew a straight linebetween them. Now they havebeen accepted as fulltimemachinists at Swazi aftercompleting a 12-week pilottraining scheme run by theLevin outdoor clothingmanufacturer, with the supportof Work and Income NewZealand.

Graduate machinist KarenGriffen said she jumped at thechance to learn a new skill, get ajob and get off the benefit.

‘‘I love it as I couldn’t sewbefore, even hand sewing abutton on, it would fall off. I can’twait to start fulltime work onMonday.’’

Fellow graduate Jojo Hemiwas full of praise for the Swazistaff who made learning easywhile Delwyn Mita said hernewly gained skills were alsobeing put to good use at homesewing for the family.

Teaching the three womenwas Tracey Millard, who said thewomen’s eagerness to learn andtry something different wasobvious.

‘‘They didn’t miss a day. Fromnever having sat behind a sewingmachine before, they havelearned to cut from a template, how to sew two different styles ofzips as well as the machinistskills to produce qualitystandard garments and their owndesigns. The days have gonewhen skilled machinists walkthrough the door so this course isan opportunity for us to trainlocal people for fulltime work

and give back to thecommunity.’’

Swazi general managerSharee Harper said skilledmachinists were hard to findand the programme wasdesigned to train machinists to

the ‘‘Swazi standard’’.‘‘Our criteria is no previous

experience, so no bad habits, justthe right attitude andenthusiasm to learn.’’

Following a seminar at WINZ,24 CVs were received with 12

clients selected for interviews forthe six course places. Ms Harpersaid three people later droppedout making selection for the topthree machinists to join thecompany ‘‘somewhat easier’’.She said Swazi hoped to run the

training school each year.Established in Levin, in 1994,

Swazi currently employs 20machinists turning outapproximately 45,000 garments ayear for the national andinternational markets.

Carving projectderailed by theftBy PETER FRANKLIN

A long-awaitedcommunity project hasbeen put on the backfootafter a carved head pieceand the carvers toolswere stolen.

The carving and toolswere being stored at theEvents Centre, whenthieves seized theopportunity and stole thework and tools.

The completed carvingwas designed andcarefully sculptured by

carver Honi Heke, ofLevin, to enhance theentranceway intoHinemoa House.

Max Stevenson,Hinemoa Housespokesman, said it hadbeen a struggle to fundthe project as thesteelwork to hold thecarved pieces in placewas expensive.

Mr Stevenson said, although there weregrants for the project, itonly covered half of thecost, the balance was

made up fromfundraising activities. The theft of the headpiece, the final sectionand the carving tools hasdevastated everyoneinvolved in the project.

Mr Stevenson said forcarver Honi Heke toreplace the stolen sectionhe would need a piece ofmacrocapa, about 1 metreby 1.5 to 2 metres and 5cmthick.

If anyone can help, they can get in touch withHinemoa House.

Wellington’s Shifty Maidsof Grey came out the overallwinners at the firstUltimate Sur5altournament held at Levin’sEvent Centre.

Roller derby teams fromall around the North Islandcame to Levin to battle itout to see who would be theultimate ‘‘sur5or’’.

Unlike a normal game ofroller derby, where twoteams compete for points intwo 20 minute halves, 14teams played every otherteam once for 2 minutes.

Sur5al was establishedin the United Kingdom bythe Royal Windsor RollerGirls and this was the firsttime it was held in NewZealand.

A full day of derbykicked off at 11am and wentthrough to 7pm that night.

After the 14 teamsbattled it out for theultimate ‘‘sur5or’’, thetendermeats (freshly passedskill-tested skaters) had athree-way game betweenthem, this also broughtskaters from around theNorth Island. This was agreat learning curve and

new skaters picked up a lotof experience, for some itwas their first game theyhad played.

The host club, theWhenua Fatales, would liketo say a huge thank you toall people that made this

day run so smoothly, ifanybody has interest in thissport they can look them upon facebookwww.facebook.com/wfrdl

Paint out successBLUE BEAT

with GRAEME JARVISCommunity Constable

I wish to congratulate theNeighbourhood PolicingTeam this week on thesterling efforts they havemade to remove graffiti inthe South East quadrant ofLevin.

While graffiti overall isat an all-time low in Levin, thanks to the efforts ofDeputy Mayor Gary Goodand a small group ofhelpers, the southern areaof Levin bounded byLiverpool Street, was inneed of a major makeover.

Over a number ofmonths, the teamcatalogued 70 graffiti sites, contacted property owners, arranged paint, volunteers, and the celebration for allthe efforts with music andsausage sizzle, to round outthe day.

By the time the paint outday was confirmed, anumber of property ownershad made their own effortsto remove graffiti. Sixtylitres of paint was used byabout 50 helpers, includingTaitoko JuniorNeighbourhood Supportstudents, Keep LevinBeautiful, HorowhenuaYouth Voice, HDC, and 20local communityvolunteers. A commercialwater blaster was madeavailable by staff fromDowners, and one youngoffender responsible forsome of the graffiti in the

area helped in the paint out.Sadly, there is still

someone out theredetermined to undo all thegood achieved in Levin, andLevin people may well haveseen the words DUKE &DOZER, painted in variousplaces throughout the town.Police would like to identifythis offender.

Scams are prevalent atpresent and are arriving inmany forms. A commontheme for such a letter is toproclaim that the recipientof the letter is able to sharein a vast fortune in UScurrency, although the onlylink to the benefactor is thatthey share the samesurname.

There is no directrequest in the first letterasking for money; however,I am sure that shouldanyone be foolish enough toreply to such a letter, then itwill not be long before suchrequests are made. Anotheremail that has been referredto me follows a similar

format, and promises ashare in a fortune to be paidin euros. Please do notrespond to theseoutrageous scams; deleteemails or consign letters tothe bin where they belong.

Another pamphlet dropthat appeared for the firsttime in the past week alsohas me concerned. Thepamphlet asks for locals toget into boats and protectour shores from peoplesmugglers.

While this is aridiculous notion andbarely requires furtherconsideration, thepamphlet also talks aboutthe group setting upneighbourhood groups. Ineed to make a cleardistinction that this claimhas no relationship to thework undertaken byNeighbourhood Support, anational group workingclosely with police, andindeed working from policestations.

I have noticed in the pastfew weeks that the streetsin the town are becomingmore congested asChristmas nears, theweather becomes warmer, and senior college studentsare no longer at school.

All footpath users willneed to be aware of theincreased traffic.Pedestrians and those onmobility scooters will needto show some courtesy andpatience, particularly in theleadup to Christmas.

Woman sentencedover pitbull attackA Kapiti woman hasescaped a custodial sen-tence for her part in asavage dog attack which lefttwo Otaki women physic-ally and emotionallyscarred.

Kelly Murray, 21,appeared on Tuesday beforeJudge Gerrard Lynch inLevin District Court.

She was sentenced tothree months’ home deten-tion and 75 hours’ commun-ity service, with a recom-mendation that the term becarried out at an animalshelter like the SPCA.

Murray was also orderedto pay each of the victims$500 for emotional harm.

Judge Lynch read outparts of the victim impactstatements in which GlenysRichardson, 67, who suf-fered a deep bite to herthigh, said it was a hugechallenge for her now whena dog approached, and shealso felt disfigured.

Both victims wereattacked by the roamingpitbull terriers outside theirMoana Street homes onNovember 28 last year.

Julie Harrison, 48, suf-fered the first attack when a

2-year-old pitbull went forher, followed by a 9-month-old of the same breed.

She lost a fingertip, partof her nose, had tendonssevered, and her forearmsuffered lacerations andmuscle damage.

She managed to get toher front door, dragging oneof the dogs, its teeth lockedon her thigh.

The animal only let gowhen she slammed its headin the door three times.

‘‘I was literally a dog’sbreakfast,’’ she told theHorowhenua Chronicleearlier this year.

Hearing Ms Harrison’sscreaming, Mrs Richardsonwent to her rescue only tobe met by one of themarauding dogs.

It latched on to the backof her right thigh, destroy-ing part of her hamstring, and parts of her indexfinger and thumb. One ofthe dogs was lunging withpieces of flesh in its mouth.Mrs Richardson said shehad seen bits of her flesh onthe road.

Both women havereceived extensive medicaltreatment for their injuries.

Judge Lynch said thatwhile Murray did not ownthe dogs she was in controlof them. She allowed themto roam.

In his summing upJudge Lynch took intoaccount Murray’s remorseand her willingness to payreparation for harm thevictims had suffered.

He also noted the factthat she had now partedfrom her partner and had a3-year-old child to support.

The dog’s owner, FloydRichards, 25, escaped a cus-todial sentence when heappeared for sentencing inLevin District Court inAugust.

He was sentenced to 200hours’ community serviceand four months’ commun-ity detention, ordered to pay$3400 reparation and givena curfew which allowed himto continue working so hecould pay the money.

Richards had been work-ing out of the region at thetime of the attack and leftthe dogs in the care ofMurray.

They were jointlycharged under the Dog Con-trol Act.

LOOKING forward to starting another chapter in her life, KataraniaTansley, her son Ely and head teacher/manager Ann Stout.

School’s in for teen mumsBy PETER FRANKLIN

Teen mum Katarania Tansley and3-month-old Ely will both beheading off to Waiopehu Collegein the first term of 2014, thanks toan innovative project undertakenby the school.

Miss Tansley, 17, is one of thefirst to enrol in the new He WhareManaaki Tangata teen parentingeducation unit that will officiallyopen before the first term.

Head teacher/manager AnnStout said while she was excitedabout the new unit, she wasconscious of the responsibility todeliver quality education to theteens.

Miss Tansley said being able toget back into school and know thather son would be in a safe, accessible place was going to giveher peace of mind so that shecould concentrate on studying.

‘‘I really would encourageothers to think of the future and

enrol, the benefits are going to behuge,’’ she said.

She intends to gain her NCEALevel 3 qualification which willtake two years. During that timeher son will have a great start tohis education through the unit’skindergarten.

Mrs Stout said they wereencouraging young parents tofinish their education and build asuccessful future for themselvesand their children.

College principal BarryPetherick said there were somedisturbing statistics behind theneed for the teen parenting unit, one being that a high percentageof young baby girls born to teenmums became teen mumsthemselves and another was that60 per cent of baby boys born toteen mums would end up in jail.

It was those statistics that theywere trying to turn around.

Enrolments are now beingaccepted for the next year.

Recycling white teddies is nota job for the squeamish.

‘‘The hardest part waspulling out the eyes,’’ artistRonda Turk said.

Creating a teddydress —sorry, wedding dress — ofrecycled bears was Jamie-Leigh Turk’s idea.

‘‘She created templatespinning them to adressmaker’s dummy,’’ mumRonda said.

Getting the bears togetherwas a family effort.

‘‘My mum lives inMarlborough, she bought upevery white bear at the charityshops and markets sendingthem up to us.’’

Jamie-Leigh and Rondalaunched their own bear hunt. The ‘‘pelts’’ had to be washedas anything stained couldn’tbe used.

‘‘Paws were used to fringethe train,’’ Ronda said. A bearbustle was the finishing touch.

‘‘We nominated the dressfor the wearable arts award,’’Ronda said.

Jamie-Leigh modelled thedress for photos but despitelooking beary gorgeous, itwasn’t accepted for the show.

It is now on display atRonda’s art gallery inCambridge Street.

Oliver now on a waste campaignBy Linda Hall

Savewith JamieBy JamieOliver,Penguin, $65

I’ve said it before and I’ll say itagain . . . I really like JamieOliver. He cookswith acasualness that I find reallyappealing in today’s televisionworld of cooking perfection. His ambition to get children

eating healthy food is one that Iadmire. Children are themosthonest critics around and I’vewatchedOliver’s disappointmenton telly after school kids haveturned up their noses at hishealthymeals. I’ve also seen thetriumphwhen his perseverancepays off.His latest book is all about

cooking healthy and nutritiousfood on a budget. His book showsreaders how to shop smart, cookclever andwaste less.Savewith Jamie has 120

yummymoney-savingmeals,hints on how to get themost outof ingredients, save time andmoney ‘‘without compromising ontaste’’.Jamie also says that every

recipe in this book is cheaper perportion than takeaways.Hiswaste-less hints include

what to dowith unfinishedwine, stale bread and dripping fromaroast dinner.Recipes include everything

frombaked onion in the hole tomothership roast salmon.I think this is his best book yet.

Love it.

SWEET PEA FISH PIEFish pie is one of my favourites

and seems to be one of yourstoo, so I’ve written this newrecipe to be super thrifty andmake use of your freezer staples— and I have to say, it’s one ofmy best (using smashed sweet

peas in the mash is a revelation). In theory, fish pies have alwaysbeen about stretching fish along way, and by using qualityfrozen fish fillets you can get inany supermarket, it’s

unbelievable how cheaply youcan make it.Total time: 1 hour 30 minutes /398 calories Serves 8

INGREDIENTS

1kg potatoes1 lemon40g unsalted butter400g frozen peas2 carrots2 onionsolive oil500ml semi-skimmed milk2 x 150g frozen salmon fillets2 x 100g frozen white fish fillets65g plain flour100g frozen spinach125g frozen cooked peeledprawns1 heaped teaspoon Englishmustard40g cheddar cheese

METHOD

Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/

gas 4. Peel the potatoes and cutinto large even-sized chunks, thenput them into a large pan of boilingsaltedwater for 15minutes, or untilcooked through. Drain andmashwith a pinch of salt and pepper, thezest from the lemon and the butter.Place the frozen peas in acolander, pour over some boilingwater to defrost them, then drainwell and pulse a few times in a foodprocessor. Fold them through themashed potato, then leave to oneside.

Peel and chop the carrots andonions and cook them in a largeovenproof pan (roughly 30cm indiameter) with a lug of oil for 15minutes, or until softened but notcoloured, stirring occasionally.Meanwhile, heat themilk in a panon amediumheat. Oncesimmering, add the frozen fishfillets for around 10minutes, or untilcooked through, then use a slottedspoon to remove them to a plate, taking the pan off the heat.

Stir the flour into the carrots andonions, then gradually add themilk, a ladleful at a time, stirringcontinuously. Stir in the spinachuntil broken down, then season toperfection. Flake in the fish fillets(carefully remove and discard theskin if the fillets have it), add theprawns, mustard and the juice fromhalf the lemon, grate in theCheddar and stir gently tocombine. Topwith the pea-spikedmash and smooth out, scuffing itup slightly with a fork to give it greattexture. Bake for 30 to 40minutes,or until golden. Servewith ahelping of baked beans—delicious!

Your Child’sAmazing Brain

Everything you do with

your baby helps to develop

their brain and helps them

to learn. You are the most

important first teacher for

your child. Forming a loving,

strong, relationship with

your baby helps their brain to

develop. To develop properly,

the pathways in your baby’s

brain need to be covered and

protected – this happens

with the right diet. Breast

milk contains the fat that is

absolutely essential for the

covering of the neurons –

the myelin. The pathways

and neurons must be formed

properly and covered so

that the messages in the

brain go to the right places.

You, as a parent, can help tostrengthen the connectionson your baby’s brain in manyways, such as feeding, holding, touching and talking to yourbaby. These all send messagesto your baby’s brain via theirsenses. Talk and sing to yourbaby, show them things intheir environment, help themto build positive relationshipswith people in their lives andrepeat positive experiencesover and over again. Buildingyour relationship with yourbaby is the basis for learningand stimulation for their brainthat helps them to prepare towalk and talk. We, as parents, are busy and we do have otherresponsibilities so this does notmean you need to stimulateyour baby every minute of theday to ensure they do well.

Bumper night of speedway action

By PETER FRANKLIN

Robertson Holden InternationalSpeedway was the place to befor an action-filled night onSaturday.

With the return of the of theJoblins and Meirs to help stirthings up, the scene was set forsome major action in the LucasOils superstock series.

The big hit of the night camein the superstocks when ScottJoblin tangled on the backstraight and ended up facing theoncoming traffic. While most ofthe following cars managed toget around the stranded Joblin,Shane Penn 1NZ couldn’t andhit Joblin’s car head-on at fullspeed.

The impact lifted Joblin’s caroff the ground and turned himaround, Penn’s car had to betowed off the track with frontsuspension damage whileJoblin drove on to the infield.

In the stockcars, it wasShannon’s Ron Tyre who put ona brilliant display of how to getaround the track with nosteering wheel.

Coming out of turn twoTyre’s steering felt extremelyvague he soon discovered thatthe steering wheel had brokenoff, he kept the foot down andused the fence to guide himaround the track, althoughgetting stuck on the fence andthen getting a big hit wasenough to see the car pulled off.A quick repair job in the pitshad Tyre back racing for therest of the night.

Stu Russell had his mini-stock rocking making his wayfrom 16th on the grid to second,

until the oil pressure wentdown rapidly — he had run oversomething and put a hole in thesump and it was the end of thenight for him.

Fans will be treated to twoteams races this weekend atRobertson Holden InternationalSpeedway. The annualChallenge Cup superstock teamsrace between the PalmerstonNorth Panthers and NelsonTigers is joined by a stockcartrial teams race betweenProbables and Possibles.

A healthy rivalry has existedfor a number of years nowbetween the Palmerston NorthPanthers and the Nelson Tigers. But be assured neither teamwill be holding back when theyhit the track for the annualChallenge Cup. The Pantherswon this event last season onforeign soil, and the Tigers willbe eager to regain thesilverware along with thebragging rights that accompanyit.

The Panthers team is

unchanged from that whichwon the ENZED SuperstockTeams Champs last season;1nzp Shane Penn, 8p ScottMiers, 10p Peter Rees, 52p ScottJoblin and 58p Peter Bengston. The Nelson Tigers lineup isslightly altered but full ofexperience with 82n JaredGray, 83n Ben Taylor, 84nShane Harwood, 85n Dale Ewersand 86n Blair Cunningham.

A stockcar trial teams racefor Palmerston North Pumasspots has been added to the

programme, with the NZStockcar Teams Champs thereon January 1 and 2 loominglarge.

The Probables is composed of1nzp Peter Rees, 10p JoshPrentice, 67p Alec Wilson, 75pGavin Taniwha, 126p AsherRees and 557p Darrel Wallace. The Possibles contain 3nzpWilliam Humphries, 31p GaryDavis, 119p Zac Harris, 357pAaron Iremonger, 501p JayKnight and 581p JordanDare.

Veteran Ken in record-breaking form

KING KEN: Ken Smith leading Andrew Higgins during the Formula 5000 action atManfeild. PHOTO: FAST COMPANY/LYALL CHINNERY

Kiwi motor racing veteran Ken Smithwas in record breaking form at theopening round of the 2013-14 MSC NewZealand F5000 Tasman Cup RevivalSeries at Manfeild on November 9-10.

Smith qualified his Lola T332 on poleposition, claimed three race wins fromthree starts and established a newManfeild F5000 lap record — betteringthe time set by lifelong friend and first-time-around rival Graeme Lawrenceback in 1976.

And the 72-year-old — now in his56th consecutive season of national-level single-seater motor racing —reckons if and when the conditions areright again be can go even quicker.

According to Smith, Lawrence’soriginal F5000 benchmark — a 1m01.900s — was set in his then-new LolaT332 at the third ManfeildInternational meeting (a round of thePeter Stuyvesant Series Smith went onto win) in 1976. It remained thebenchmark for all classes at the3.033km Feilding circuit until SimonWills bettered it (1m 01.457s) in aReynard Formula Holden in 2000.

Though both Smith and Jonny Reidhave gone considerably quicker duringdemo runs (Smith has done a 57 second

lap in the Leyton House March Formula1 car he owned for some time and Reidwent under the minute in a demobehind the wheel of A1 Team NewZealand’s A1GP car) neither time hasbeen recognised meaning Wills’ultimate record is safe for now.

By recording a 1m 01.770s in thesecond MSC Series race of the weekend, however, Smith finally betteredLawrence’s long-standing categorybenchmark and was bullish about hisprospects of going even quicker.

‘‘I think there is a minute flat in thatcar. It was just magic today and thetrack was nice and grippy thismorning.’’ said Smith.

‘‘If it has stayed that way we mighthave been able to do it in the afternoon, but it didn’t so that’s a job for anotherday.’’

Smith was the class of the 13-strongF5000 grid and led home the Lola T400 ofAndrew Higgins by a sizeable gap in allthree races while Roger Williams (LolaT332) was third on each occsaion.

The MSC NZ F5000 Tasman CupRevival Series action returns at the twoNew Zealand Festival of Motor Racingmeetings at Hampton Downs overconsecutive weekends in late January.

By FRANKIEWEBB

Alister Good loved all animals, especially horses. It was fitting at hisfuneral last week his little pony Rastus, driven by friend Jayden Moore, led outthe hearse. More than 300 people came tofarewell the kind, jolly man who gave somuch to a number of communities.

‘‘He would give rides in the trap atfunctions raising funds for things likethe cancer society,’’ daughter Lisa said.‘‘He never did things for himself, it wasalways for someone else.’’

Born in Ashburton in 1937, his familylater moved to Horowhenua and hestarted school at Koputaroa which wasto prove a very fortuitous move.

‘‘My mum went to Koputaroa Schooland they met,’’ Lisa said. It wasn’t until1960 they tied the knot.

‘‘Dad had gone back south to start acareer in the racing industry, workingas a jockey for my uncle.’’

When weight became an issue,Alister took up dairy farming andmoved north to take up a position inBainesse. Further moves around theNorth Island eventually saw them endup in Foxton.

Alister was a familiar site driving hispony and trap around the streets ofFoxton, at race days and weddings.

‘‘He stopped driving the pony earlierthis year,’’ Lisa said. ‘‘He had beendiagnosed with a heart condition sometime ago, and began to deteriorate.’’Young friend Jayden Moore, also a loverof ponies, came most days to visit Alisterand pony Rastus, keeping the pony inwork. ‘‘We got the trap painted for thefuneral,’’ Lisa said. ‘‘Ironically the paintused was specially created, and wasnamed Good Brown and of course ourname is Good, mum’s maiden name wasBrown.’’ Alister is survived by his wifeand four children.

Foxton volunteer firefighters celebrated theirsuccesses for 2013 at their annual honourspresentation evening.

A record crowd attended the event this year, which shows the appreciation the Foxtoncommunity has for the men and women whovolunteer their time and effort to thecommunity every day of the year.

Special presentations of Long Service andGood Conduct medals for 14 years service weremade by the New Zealand Fire Service to seniorstation officer Mark Thwaites and seniorfirefighter Roger Clement. The New ZealandFire Service Long Service and Good ConductMedal is a meritorious and long service awardfor members who have completed 14 years ofservice. It is the only service award presented bythe New Zealand Fire Service.

Chief fire officer (Foxton) Gary Stratfordthanked the employers of the volunteers forallowing them to respond during workinghours.

A special thanks went to families. ‘‘There aremany times where plans are changed at the lastmoment when the siren sounds. Without the

support of our families and employers, theBrigade would be unable to operate.’’ MrStratford said.

The Corley Cup, a brigade award voted on bytheir peers for the most conscientiousfirefighter, was made to qualified firefighterScott Burr. This is the third year in a row MrBurr has received this award, showing the

commitment and dedication he has for thebrigade.

A brigade competition cup, The Granger Cup,was awarded to station officer Shaun Sayer forwinning the competition. The competition isbased on basic hose running skills and has beenrun on an annual basis since 1987.

The Foxton Volunteer Fire Brigade currentlyhas 15 active members within its ranks whohave completed a combined service of 220 yearsfor their community.

Like all volunteer brigades, they arecurrently struggling to provide the service toour community during the normal working day.The brigade needs people to step forward andhelp out their community. It takes about sixmonths to become a Fire Fighter but the benefitsyou, your family and employers receive from itare countless.

PET PROJECTwithShivaunStatham

Shivaun Statham, fromPurina, is atrained vet nurse and dog behaviouristwho answers questions on the freePurina pet-care line—0800PETVIP. Ifyou have questions or concerns aboutyour pet’s health, behaviour or diet forShivaun, [email protected]

Plan well when choosing a dog

We’ve just started looking into gettinga pet. The kidswould really like a dog,but we aren’t sure on the best breedsto have around children. We need tobe able to leave it indoors for a fewhours each daywhilemywifeworks,as we don’t yet have a fenced yard. Our children are 2, 6 and 10. — PeteAdog is a wonderful pet to have and alovely choice for children but it isimportant to consider how theworkinvolved in owning a dogwill fit in toyour lifestyle.Puppies cannot be left on their own

for long periods of time andwill needdaily training. Be aware that althoughchildren can help, ultimately the adultwho is at home themost will be theprimary caregiver for the puppy.Which breed is a big decision with

many factors involved and I wouldrecommend that you take the time to dosome research on dogs in general anddifferent breeds before you decide. It isworth talking to a pet professional suchas your veterinarian or veterinarynurse, who can offer some good advice. It may also help to visit a shelter and

talk to the staff, even if youwant to get apedigree dog, as talking to experienced

people can help you tomake somedecisions.

Some of the importantquestions you need to askyourselves are:How active as a family are you? Do youwant a high-energy dog that goes alongon daily runs or is your family lessactive? A high-energy dogwill needmore than just a daily walk and runningaround in the backyardwith thechildren.■ Is it important to have a short hairedor non-shedding dog due to allergies?■ Can you handle a larger dog or do you

need a smaller one?■ Do youwant a purebred or amixedbreed?

A few tips for you:How experienced you are as a dog ownerwill affect which breedwill be suitable. The temperament and personality of thedog is more important than how cute thedog is. Smaller dogs are not alwayseasier to handle than larger dogs. Thepuppy in the litter that is themost shyand fearful is oftenmore difficult tohandle in adulthood. It really is best tohave a fenced section, so plan to fencethe section before the dog arrives.

Ag day delight

ILISONI Vonomatairatu hopes the judge doesn’t spy his calf sleepingon the job. Ilisoni doesn’t live on a farm and is only able to participatein agricultural day thanks to Hilton Williams and partner Kate whohave ‘given’ him the calf to care for as his own.

FLOYD Fenn, left, and Tony Wilton wait for judging in the lamb section.

JUNIOR AG DAYThe Horowhenua Boys’ and Girls’Agricultural Club was founded in 1930to promote the education of primaryschool children in the responsibility ofcaring for animals and plants.Over the past few years the club hasbeen concerned with the high cost ofmilk powder, and that some of thestock hadn’t been fed as well as theyshould have been.‘‘Certainly not the case this year,’’secretary Carol Christensen said. ‘‘Infact it has been the opposite, in somecases with some lambs succumbing tobloat through over feeding.’’Grass growth this year has beenexceptional and livestock weightshave been high which may be acontributing factor to the growth inthe number of entries at local ag days.‘‘It is great to see entries up this year,’’Mrs Christensen said.Local schools participating in groupfinals are Tokomaru School, ManakauSchool, Shannon School, Waitohu/Otaki College, Ohau School, Te HoroSchool, Opiki School, PoroutawhaoSchool and Koputaroa School. Thereare 13 trophies to be presented at thegroup finals today. Champions from allof Horowhenua school ag days cometogether at the Levin A P and IShowgrounds today for group finaljudging starting at 10.30am, everyoneis welcome.

KELSEA Williams is delightedwith Nicki the lamb’s ribbon-winning performance.

Shannon was out in force tosupport the school’sagricultural day.

For some children thepleasure of caring for andpresenting a calf was aspecial privilege madeavailable by the generosityof a local dairy farmingfamily.

The Williams familymakes calves available forchildren, who otherwisewould never have theopportunity.

‘‘This is something the

Williams family have donefor many years,’’ teacherShelley Fuller said. ‘‘It issuch an amazing, specialthing for the children whodo it.’’ Students are chosenby the school and ‘‘given’’ acalf to care for as if it wastheir own.

‘‘They go out every dayand feed the calves, groomthem and care for themright up until ag day.’’

They often competeagainst the Williams’ ownchildren. This fosters theessence of why the club wasstarted.

Kia enhances Optima for 2014T

he appeal of the Kia Optima sedanhas been extended with thearrival of 2014 models boastingrevised styling and new safety

technologies along with some minor priceadjsutments.

Pricing now starts at $42,490 for theentry level Optima LX model (an increaseof $500) while the mid-grade EX andflagship Limited models have had theirprices reduced by $1000 and $500respectively.

The eye-catching styling of the Optimahas a revised grille design and the LEDdaytime running lights have been liftedfrom the lower bumper to a position justabove the headlights. The EX and Limitedmodels are identified by a striking frontLED quad-lamp foglight design.

The aerodynamics have been refinedwith a new rear diffuser and a sweepingtrunk lid that replaces the previous rearboot lid spoiler while newly designed LEDrear lamps complete the exterior stylingmakeover.

The improvements continue inside the2014 Optima. Activating the Optima’spush-button ignition brings new displaysto life — a 4.3-inch touch-screen TFT LCDinstrument cluster featuring an eight-speaker Infinity sound system for the LXand EX models and a high-resolution8-inch navigation and telematics screenincorporating the sound system for theLimited.

The SatNav system will be standard onLimited models from February 2014 andwill include SUNA Live Traffic Updatetechnology, which provides real-timetraffic information for drivers in theAuckland, Hamilton, Tauranga,Wellington and Christchurch regions.

The SUNA function is a lifetimecomponent of the Kia SatNav system, while the navigation maps are updatedand supported by Kia Motors NZ free ofcharge for the first three years ofownership through the annual servicevisit to the dealer.

The Optima Limited also becomes thefirst Kia sold in New Zealand to featurethe new Blind Spot Detection (BSD) andLane Change Assist systems that detectsother vehicles out of the driver’s sight, flashing a warning in the door mirror andsounding an audible warning if the driveruses the indicators.

There’s also Rear Cross-traffic Alertbuilt into the rear parking sensors, whichis useful when backing out of a car park, where it senses laterally to warn thedriver of approaching vehicles. Frontparking sensors are also standard.

The interior upgrade also includesredesigned dashboard and a new leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel and amore ergonomic gear shift lever

Kia says comfort is significantlyimproved with the all-new front seatingdesign incorporating better side supportin the cushion and backrest, plus morepadding under the leading edge of thecushion. There is softer leatherupholstery for the EX and Limited andalso a new cooling/heated function for thepassenger seat, as well as driver’s seat, onthe Limited model.

Some changes have been made to Kia’s

so-called ANZAC suspension tuningdeveloped for driving conditions inAustralia and New Zealand. The changesinclude rear cross member dampers andincreased insulation to reduce road noise,a rear wheel guard to further deadensound transmission and upgraded tyresto further reduce road noise.

The powertrain for the 2014 Optimaretains the direct injection Theta II2.4-litre engine, and six-speed automatictransmission which allows featuringSportmatic clutchless shifting.

The Optima features Drive ModeSelect, which allows a driver to select thedriving mode from the ECO to SportsMode. This adjusts settings in the throttleand gear change points to enable thedriver to make the selection, via the ECObutton on the lower right of the steeringwheel.

The equipment roster for the $42,490LX model includes dual exhaust withchrome tips, solar glass, exterior mirrorturn signal indicators, front fog lights, exterior heated mirrors, chromeaccented exterior door handles, new17-inch alloy wheels fitted with 225/55R17 tyres and Infinity sound system withreversing camera on the touch-screen.

The volume-selling EX model nowoffers larger 18-inch alloy wheels fittedwith 225/45 R18 tyres, leather seats,10-way power adjustable driver’s seat, automatic folding mirrors LED foglights

and illuminated front cup holders pricedat $45,990.

The Optima Limited is $50,490 andincludes a sports styling package with18-inch sports alloys, HID headlights,

smart cornering lamps, red brakecalipers, chrome accented side sills,10-way power adjustable passenger’s seat, twin sunroofs and dark woodgraininterior trim.
