By PETER FRANKLIN Retirees heading to Horowhenua to enjoy a lifestyle promoted by Horowhenua District Council as the best in the country are in for a shock, according to Levin residents Paul and Jan Smith. The couple are among a growing number of people horrified by council’s proposed rate changes that will see their rates rise by more than 79 per cent if the rate review is accepted by council. Currently, general rates and the roading and stormwater rates are calculated based on the land value of a property. Under the proposed change to capital value, rates would be calculated on the value of the land plus what is built on the land, such as a house, a shop or factory. Mr Smith said they were not unrealistic, understanding that rates must go up to maintain services and upgrades. However, after meeting with more than 30 fellow residents from Pohutukawa Drive and surrounding area, he believes the consultation by council with ratepayers was flawed. He said only the top 1 per cent of ratepayers, those whose rates would increase by $1000 and above, were initially contacted to make submissions. Submissions on the proposal closed at 5pm on Monday. “When I asked some of our neighbours, they knew nothing about the proposal. One was in tears saying she could not afford the proposed increase and would have to sell her home,” he said. Under council’s new capital value proposal the Smith’s annual rates would increase from $1500 to $2759, plus Horizons Regional Council rates. The couple will be looking at an annual rates bill of $3100. Mr Smith said another issue, should the proposed rates change go through, was the negative affect on house sales — particularly for people looking to come to the area and retire “in their own bit of heaven”. The Smiths said they had worked hard all their lives and, like many others, had invested all their finances into their dream home. However, as Mr Smith pointed out, they were still retirees on a fixed income. They feel that they are being punished for the sacrifices made by working hard and achieving their lifestyle goal. Horowhenua District Council chief executive David Clapperton said he could assure ratepayers that no decisions had been made and that the pre-consultation, though not a legal requirement, had been undertaken simply to help form a rating proposal for the Draft Long Term Plan 2015-2025. Mr Clapperton said full consultation would happen next March and April, when the public could make formal submissions and also have the opportunity to present submissions to council in person. “It will be the outcome of the submission process next year that will determine the rating system council will use,” Mr Clapperton said. He said council was legally required to review its rating system and they were doing so to determine the most appropriate option for the present and future needs of the district. The total amount of rates levied in any particular year by council would not change, just how rates are divided among property owners.

YOUR VIEWS

Peace symbolI was very reassured after theNovember 11 re-dedication ofthe Weraroa Domain PeaceMemorial Gate when a medalattired, beret wearing man, inhis 80s, stopped and said thathe'd misunderstood what I'dbeen doing before the re-dedication.

I'd given out peace symbollabelled packets of five smallfolded paper peace cranes, madein Ehime Prefecture Japan.

They sent about 48,000 tolong-time Otaki Peace Activist,Barney Richards, in 2013. Theysymbolise the fervent hope thatnuclear weapons will beabolished for all time, so thatthe Nagasaki of August 9 1945will remain the last. I'd a ply-

wood sign under my arm sayingthis. It was appropriate to justhold it before the re-dedicationof Levin's memorial to worldpeace. The medal wearing mantold me of his 1962 naval crewvisit to a Hiroshima "A" bombsurvivor’s hospital. Teenagershad extensive visible cancerousgrowths from the bombs'chromosome damaging radia-tion.

The crew donated cash. Hewas appreciative of my earliergesture.

He firmly agreed that wedon't want nuclear weapons. What a great demonstration ofpeace he gave, after the newlyanchored Peace MemorialGate's first event.

POROUTAWHAO School’s Room 4 enjoy a day out in Wellington at theballet.

By TANYAWOOD

Poroutawhao School studentswere able to get up close andpersonal with members of theRoyal New Zealand Ballet.

The 30 children from Room 4travelled to Wellington to see aperformance of Charles Dickens’A Christmas Carol, at the StJames Theatre, earlier thismonth. It was part of anEducation Day held by the balletcompany for schools.

The day included meeting thedancers, looking behind thescenes and learning aboutmakeup application. To add to thefun, the children made masks atschool and some dressed up incostume to go to the balletperformance.

Teacher Nicky Jeffries said thechildren loved the experience. For some children it was boththeir first time in the capital cityand at a ballet, while most hadnever been to the St JamesTheatre. “The children wereamazed they understood a showthat had no talking. A few thoughtthey wouldn’t enjoy a ballet butthey loved it and said they woulddefinitely go again if they had thechance.”

Ms Jeffries said these types of

trips allowed the school to exposethe children to the sameexperiences as city children.“We’ve also been following thecountdown to the opening of theballet on their Facebook page andthere’s few children who are nowshowing an interest in taking upballet.”

The children fundraised to payfor the trip and Ms Jeffries said

RNZB was pleased that a schoolwas willing to come from as far asHorowhenua. The class willreceive a poster with the cast’ssignatures.

RNZB will use the above photothey took of the class in theirEducation media material topromote the company for moreschool involvement within thegreater Wellington Area.

Pink message in paddocks

LVN191114twpinkbales

OHAU farmer Robin Faulkner is happy to take a bit of stick from peopleabout his pink baleage — it’s all in a good cause.

By TANYAWOOD

You’ve heard of Pink Batts, wellnow there’s pink bales.

Baleage rolls wrapped in pinkplastic have been popping uparound the district. Ohau farmerRobin Faulkner said he was‘pleasantly’ surprised to comehome after a weekend away to findhis 13 bales making such a visualimpact in the field. There was evena ribbon bow affixed to one of thebales.

“You can’t miss them when youdrive down the state highway. I’vehad quite a bit of stick from people,I won’t tell you what I text to thecontractor, but I’ve taken it all ingood humour.”

The pink coverage is in supportof New Zealand Rural Women’sBreast Cancer Awareness.

The fundraiser is the brainchildof Agpac that supplies thebalewrap, normally green incolour.

Spokesperson Chris Dawsonsaid it was quite a feat for theirSwedish manufacturers to get thecolour to work, following a series oftrials and tests. “We brought in twocontainer loads and eachcontractor is allowed just four rolls[each roll is 1500 metres long].”

Mr Dawson said the companyalso had pink and black netwrap

for cuts of hay, as part of thefundraiser. “The aim is tomaintain awareness of breastcancer throughout the country andsupport one of the organisationswithin the Breast CancerFoundation.”

A percentage of sales from thepink balewrap and netwrap will begiven to the Louise PerkinsFoundation, which supportswomen living with secondarybreast cancer.

Robin lost his mother to breast

cancer about 20 years ago. “It’s abitter sweet reminder but it’s all ina good cause and I’m fullysupportive of the idea.”

Contractor Gary Davis whopink-wrapped Robin’s baleage saidthe added ribbon bow was his idea.

“I’ve got a few more pink rollsup my sleeve so someone elsemight be in for a nice surprise,” hesaid. Pink baleage has also beenspotted in Foxton.

Agcap plan to run thefundraiser again next year.

The Ag show must go on.A wet and windy Saturday morning

may have put the dampener on many ofthe outdoor activities at PoroutawhaoSchool but the lamb and calf judging wentahead as planned.

Children and pets huddled undermarquees waiting their turn to enter thering and show off their leading andgrooming skills under the scrutiny of calfjudge Barry Manderson and lamb judgeVicky Prouting.

Barry said he was looking at how oftenthe 12 calves stopped while being led andcalled, and how healthy they looked.

“I also look in their ears to make surethey’re cleaned out and rub a hand acrossthe coat to see how much loose hair comesoff which will tell me how well groomedthey are,” he said.

Vicky, judging the 11 lambs and twokids, was looking for how well fed andbrushed the animals looked and how wellthey followed.

The children and pets will now begearing up for Friday’s Group Finals atthe Levin Showgrounds, competingagainst children from the district’s eightother schools.

Organiser Carol Christensen said sheis expecting up to 100 calves and morethan 100 lambs, plus about 15 kids, to beentered.

“It’s also a great opportunity for thosechildren who didn’t win anything at theirschool ag day to have another go,” shesaid. “All these children have spentmonths caring for their pets, groomingthem, training them and fostering a bondwith them. The group final is anotherchance to show off. Anything can happenon the day with animals, depending onhow green the grass is or how tasty thedaisies look.”

ABSEILING tested the students’ head forheights.

By TANYAWOOD

Senior students at Levin School are stillbuzzing after their camping trip last week, which saw them crawling commando-stylethrough a glow worm cave and abseilingfrom a 12 metre high tower.

The Year 5 and 6 students spent threenights at the Highland Home camp groundin the Pohangina Valley, behind Ashhurst— for many, their first time away fromhome.

A packed itinerary that included rockclimbing, abseiling, caving, confidencecourse, bush walks and a shooting gallery, ensured there was never a dull moment forthe 33 students. Nor was there time forresting in the evenings with a night-timewalk through the bush, relying only on arope and the person in front for guidance, marshmallows around the fire, quiz nightand a concert by the children performinghakas, dances, singing and acting.

Joel Paxton, 11, said abseiling was thehighlight of the trip for him. “I hadn’t doneit before but I wasn’t scared, it was fungoing down. Some of the others werescared the tower would fall down.”

Crawling through freezing cold waterin the cave was rewarded with sights ofglow worms for 11-year-old TranyceBrown, who was hesitant at first to enterthe cave. “I didn’t want to go in but I gotmore confident once I saw my friendsdoing it. I loved the glow worm threads, Ididn’t like the wetas.”

On the last day, the children visited awind farm and went swimming at thePalmerston North Lido where they tuckedinto fish and chips for lunch beforeheading home.

Assistant principal Kathryn Brown,

who organised the trip, said the childrenhad a ball and were still excited daysafterwards, singing in the classrooms.

“The camaraderie between the childrenjust blossomed, they really stepped up tohelp each other. It was lovely to see andthey’ve been looking out for each othersince getting back to school. It’s a lovelyatmosphere to be around.”

The camp is part of the end of yeargraduation for the older students and theEducation Outside the ClassroomExperience curriculum.

My eye was caught recently by some of AvalonWaterway’s wonderful itineraries for 2015, notto mention they are offering a hefty incentive tobook your 2015 cruise before 15 December, bytaking $1,800 per couple off selected cruises anddepartures! With the earlybird airfare savings forEurope and UK, you could be gliding down thebeautiful Danube or Rhine rivers during our nextwinter, for less than the cost of some New Zealandbased holidays.

After our spring in New Zealand, one itinerary inparticular jumped out. The Tulip Time Cruise – 8days Amsterdam to Amsterdam. Now those Dutchreally know how to do Spring and even if you arenot a gardener, you will be blown away by the visualcomponent of this itinerary as you cruise throughHolland and Belgium.

Commencing in Amsterdam, the 700-year-old citywith its elegant and classic architecture, cafes, restaurants and ambiance, your first treat will beto experience a gardener’s “bucket list” wish bytaking an included excursion to the KeukenhofGardens near Lisse. Over 70 acres of parklandwith lakes, sculpture gardens, greenhouses, andwindmill to explore. Every year, 7 million flowerbulbs are planted, and you have the chance tosee the spectacular display of colours from tulips, daffodils, crocuses, and more. Next visit Kinderdijkwhere 19 windmills were built in 1740 as part ofthe water management system to help preventfloods and you actually visit one of the windmills.Visit Veere, once an important wool-tradingcentre and Middelburg, a former Dutch East IndiaCompany trading city and originally built as aZeeland stronghold against the water and fromenemies.

Next, Ghent the ‘diamond’ of Flanders in Belguim, which has managed to preserve its medieval charmwhile keeping up with the times. The medievalFlemish houses in the city are remarkable arttreasures, as are the cathedrals and castles thatyou will also view. Fascinating Bruges with its criss-crossed canals and charming old patrician housesis an optional visit.

On to Antwerp, Belgium’s second-largest cityand one of the world’s most important ancientseaports. Merging the new with the old andoffering the attractions and atmosphere you’dexpect from a European city - friendly people, fabulous architecture, chic shops, interestingmuseums, vibrant cafes, charming galleries, andhistoric monuments. The central GroteMarkt, linedwith 16th-century houses; the beautiful city hall, completed in 1566 and the Church of Our Lady, arestarted in 1352 and featuring paintings by Rubens, are but some of the sights.

In Maastricht, the bustling cosmopolitan capitalof the province of Limburg, you will see the sightsthis vibrant university town offers - the lovelycathedrals, old houses and buildings, and theimpressively cobblestoned town centre.

Arriving back in Amsterdam and before your tourofficially ends, you set out to discover the treasuresof the city by Canal Boat, cruising through theelegant grachten lined with stately homes datingback to Amsterdam’s ‘Golden Age.’

New alcohol limit on December 1The alcohol limit for drivers aged 20 andover is being lowered from MondayDecember 1 as part of the Government’sSafer Journeys strategy, aiming tosignificantly reduce deaths and seriousinjuries from road crashes by 2020.

The legal alcohol limit will belowered from 400 to 250 micrograms ofalcohol per litre of breath (or from 80 to50 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millitresof blood), bringing New Zealand law into

line with the limits already in place inthe majority of OECD countries.

The alcohol limit for drivers underthe age of 20 will remain at zero.

There is no ‘safe’ amount of alcoholfor driving, even small amounts ofalcohol affect judgement, and the abilityto drive safely begins to deteriorate aftereven one drink, according to the NZTA.■ Further information is available on itswebsite www.nzta.govt.nz

White Ribbon Day

LVN191114splwhiteribbonriders

THE White Ribbon Riders will be in Levin again, spreading their anti-violence againstwomen message. Show your support by coming down to the Adventure Park onSaturday just after midday to meet the riders.

SORRY STATSHorowhenua is not exempt fromalarming family violence statistics. There has been a steady increase infamily violence investigations overthe past five recorded years, from 750in 2009, to 1050 in 2013. However, thisdoes not necessarily mean that familyviolence is increasing. It could be thatHorowhenua’s strong anti-violencestance, coupled with the “Its not Ok”campaign has resulted in more peoplecoming forward and reporting familyviolence. Any stats are too many.Continue to stand against familyviolence.Family Violence— it is a problem forall of us.

Family violence is acomplex and long-standing problem. Itcan occur in all partsof society and affectthe most vulnerablein our communities.

It is not justphysical. It caninclude controllingand threateningbehaviours, or neglect, deprivation andisolation.

It can affect our older people as well asspouses, partners and children. It can alsoinvolve young people abusing theirparents. Alcohol and drug abuse oftencontributes, but so can stress, financialproblems, health problems andintergenerational behaviours learned at avery early age.

This week you have an opportunity toshow your support for those opposingviolence. White Ribbon Day has beenaround since 1991. It is one of the largestanti-violence campaigns in the world, recognised in over 57 countries, startedby men speaking out in opposition toviolence against women.

Bike riders who have signed up to thepledge to take a stand against all violenceagainst women will take to the highwaysaround New Zealand. They will come

through Levin on Saturday at lunchtime.Come along to the Levin AdventurePlayground to meet the riders and showthem you support their stand.

You can also wear a white ribbonevery day to show your ongoing supportfor the campaign. HALT agencies will bein the Levin Mall on Tuesday November25 so stop by, pin on a ribbon and join thewhite ribbon movement.

Colleen Tyree, TAANZ Approved Travel Broker for NZ Travel Brokers 1-19 Fitzherbert Avenue, Palmerston North

Try a Trafalgar touring experienceby Colleen Tyree......I have done a lot of traveling and my firstcoach tour was as an 18-year-old from Levin.I had never travelled overseas but was flyingto Europe for three months to visit Italianrelatives and to do a Contiki tour in a tent for18 days.

Quite a few years and numerous holidayslater I decided to book a trip to Egypt, a placethat I had wanted to travel to as long as I canremember. I didn’t have a lot of time off work, and I was a little bit nervous about visiting acountry that has a bit of history with turmoil, but I wanted to see everything, do everythingand feel safe and looked after while I was onmy holiday.

I chose a 12-day tour with Trafalgar thatstarted and ended in Cairo. It included thePyramids, cruising down the Nile and seeingall of the country’s main sights.

It was the best decision I could havemade asit meant that after I booked and paid all I hadto do was turn up at my hotel and all of myarrangements were taken care of.

I love to organise holidays, but this time itwas a nice change to use an operator whohad contacts and could make the most ofmy three weeks off work.

I had an amazing time. I was blown awayby how many pyramids there are in Gizaas I always thought there were only threebecause that is all you ever see in the photos. The individual blocks that make up thepyramids were taller than me. The pyramidsand temples in Egypt are huge, not just theoutside, but also when you go into the tombsthe statues and artefacts inside them isastounding. To see the Sphinx up close andthen lit up at night for the sound and lightshow was a wonder.

I also got to visit the Cairo museum and tosee ancient artefacts and all the gold on

Tutankhamun’s tomb. It was unreal to seethings I had only ever heard about.

The Trafalgar tour director was veryknowledgeable about the country’s history. He spoke the language and really knew hisstuff. When you’re visiting a new destination, there’s nothing like having someone whofeels like your friend there to welcome you.Someone who’s passionate about makingsure you have a great time, who will makesure you meet the locals and introduce youto hidden treasures.

Guided travel is one of the best ways totruly experience a destination and byusing Trafalgar Tours you are guaranteeda company that has proven itself time andtime again, making your holiday an enjoyableand memorable one.

MRS Fuddle Bottom and the cast create mayhem in The Nutcracker Prince at LevinLittle Theatre.

A lot of fun at Little Theatre

THEATRE REVIEWThe Nutcracker PrinceWritten & directed by Linda BuckleyReviewed by Kate Spencer

Ding dong bell … who’s in the well? That’s the question on the lips of the

audience as they take their seats to unfurlthe mystery of this year’s pantomime atLevin Little Theatre.

A more delightful and colourful treatcannot be seen on the Horowhenua-KapitiCoast this festive season. Guiding ushappily and very merrily through the taleof Luigi’s Toy Shop, and the precariousgoings on in the leadup to a hecticChristmas, are those loveable fairy storycharacters Pinocchio and his best friendJim E Cricket, who stand togetherthrough thick and thin.

As Pinocchio’s Uncle Luigi preparesthe toys for Christmas, the over-enthusiastic Mrs Fuddle Bottom stepsinto the shop to cause mayhem as she isprovoked and challenged by Jelly Bean,Luigi’s cheeky little assistant. Fun, joyand laughter take hold as the RussianDancers, the Siamese Twins and the

adorable Mother Chicken, with her littlechicks, crack on with their singing anddancing skills.

When the bumbling Luigi decides topresent young Clara with a NutcrackerPrince for Christmas, preparations aremade and the toy shop owner gets towork. But Mrs Fuddle Bottom blows afuse and the distant sound of crying isheard … ! Who’s stuck in the well?

This is an extremely funny andentertaining night out, with or withoutchildren in tow. The Nutcracker Prince isa joy to watch and a refreshing changefrom the usual Dick Whittington orAladdin. A strong chorus, effectivelighting additions, brilliant costumes andsuch delightful little human toys allenrich this production where cast happilysing and dance their way through to theChristmas finale.

Linda Buckley has done a great jobwith this Panto and Levin Little Theatrehas come up trumps yet again.Congratulations to standoutperformances by Jelly Bean (EmilyAnderson) and Pinocchio (Madi PotikiGrayling), as well as a cute and amusinginterlude from The Siamese Twins.

You shouldn’t miss this one … it’s funfor all the family and continues this weekfrom November 20-23.

Horowhenua College students have scoopedsome of the country’s top academicscholarships. Taofi Iese, 17, was one of 10students in the country, and the first in thecollege, to be awarded the Otago UniversityPacific Foundation Scholarship valued at$20,000.

Funded by the Ministry of Health, themoney pays for two years’ academic andaccommodation fees in Otago for Pacificstudents planning to study health relatedcourses.

The award came as a complete shock. “Ihad the interview with a panel of threepeople who came up from Otago,” Taofisaid. “They were meant to let me know by acertain date. It was nerve-racking waitingand my parents could see I wasn’t sleeping.I didn’t hear back so I kind of gave up.”

She was given the good news just twodays before the college prizegiving earlierthis month. “I was speechless, it was worththe wait. My dream is to complete aBachelor in Radiology.”

As Poly leader for the college’s Fa’atasicultural group, her youth leadership wasalso recognised — she was awarded the FalePasifika Scholarship worth $750, to helptowards tertiary education, and awards forcommunity service.

Hard work during the year paid off for17-year-olds Natasha Fox and DaemonKennett, each recipients of the VictoriaUniversity Achievers Scholarship thatprovides $5000 towards the first year of aBachelor degree at the Wellingtonuniversity.

Natasha’s love of graphics will see hertake up a Bachelor of Architecture next

year. Partially deaf, Natasha said she waskeen to focus on how sound travels around aroom to improve designs for people withhearing impairment. Her degree willinvolve three years of study followed by twoyears practical and a further two years backat university.

Natasha was also recognised foroutstanding achievement in design andvisual communication, one of threestudents to receive a Phyllis and FredSullivan scholarship for demonstratingearnest endeavour, diligence andperseverance, worth $840 towards futurestudies.

A Bachelor of Science majoring in mathsand physics is the first stepping stone towhat Daemon hopes will lead to a career asan astro-physicist. “Maths and physics aremy strongest subjects and I’ve always beeninterested in the nature of reality,” he said.“I was stoked to get the scholarship, it willhelp relieve some of the financial pressure.”

Daemon also achieved a clutch of awardsat the college prize giving. They includedthe Dux Litterarum, acknowledging hisexceptional academic achievement withoutstanding achievement/firsts ingeography, chemistry, physics, statisticsand maths with calculus, and theHorowhenua Scholarship valued at $750 foreach year of tertiary study.

Waiopehu College deputy principalLinda Sherlock said students achieveduniversity scholarships most years. “ThePasifika scholarship was a first this year, and unique in that it includes mentoring toensure success. Daemon and Natasha arejust thoroughly good kids, they know how towork hard and we wish them muchsuccess.”

Crosses to mark centenary

LVN141114splwhite crosses

KEITH Spora, left and John Rose are making the whitecrosses for the Fields of Remembrance in Horowhenuaand are keen to see names allocated to the blank crosses.

FIELDS OF REMEMBRANCEThe Fields of Remembrance Trust is made up of threeorganisations that serve as its Trustees – the PasschendaeleSociety, the Royal New Zealand Returned and ServicesAssociation, which consists of local RSA, and the AucklandReturned and Services Association.Their objective is for all communities throughout New Zealand tocreate Fields of Remembrance with personalisedWhite Crosses tohonour those in their community who served New Zealandoverseas duringWorldWar I.

By LINDA FLETCHER

Fields of white crosses willbe planted in Horowhenuato mark the centenary of theWorld War I landings atGallipoli next year.

The nationwide Fields ofRemembrance project isbeing organised locally byAdopt an Anzac, which haslaunched a fundraisingcampaign for the crosses.

With the launch of theirnew book Horowhenua andthe Great War 1914-1918, anumber of families havesponsored a cross for theirloved one and now Adopt anAnzac is seeking supportfrom the community for therest of the casualties.

Adopt an Anzactreasurer Barbara Timms, who is co-ordinating thedonations, said a total of 188white crosses will representthe war dead in Levin,Foxton, Shannon,Tokomaru, Moutoa andManakau.

“We hope the people ofHorowhenua will get behindthe project and be a part ofthe Fields ofRemembrance,” she said.

“It’s a chance forbusinesses, schools andcommunity organisations tosponsor a cross for $25 tohonour the Horowhenuasoldiers who died in theFirst World War. Many ofthem no longer have familyin the area. People canchoose a casualty to sponsoror they can make a generalcontribution which will helpcover those who Adopt anAnzac has been unable toidentify.”

The crosses will be set up

at memorials for a weekbefore Anzac Day and aweek after, with raising andlowering ceremonies beingorganised by theHorowhenua DistrictCouncil. Most of the crossesare being made and paintedby RSA members John Roseand Keith Spora and thename, rank and serialnumber applied by WayneKaye of Kaye Signs, but inFoxton the RSA isorganising their productionby pupils at ManawatuCollege and local businesses.

Placemakers Levinbranch manager AdamBignell has assisted withsupplying the timber for thecrosses and the paint for the

project has been sponsorednationally by Resene.

The HorowhenuaChronicle will publish a listof contributors each week, just as it did in 1922 whenfunds were raised to buildthe cenotaph, and in 2009when it was re-designed.

Anyone wishing tomake a donation cancontact Barbara Timms, phone 368-4683 or [email protected].

Adopt an Anzacmembers will be at theFields of Remembrancestand in Te Takere todayfrom 11am to 1pm,tomorrow from 1pm to 3pmand Friday 11am to 1pm toaccept donations.

Well owners warned to test waterPrivate well owners are beingencouraged to follow wellprotection practices and havetheir water tested following arecent review of groundwaterquality for Horizons RegionalCouncil.

A representative sample of 27bores across the region wereanalysed for parameters, including iron, manganese, ammonia, nitrate, E. coli andarsenic.

Horizons groundwaterscientist Abby Matthews saidin most cases the region’sgroundwater was finefor irrigation and stockwater but would require

some form of treatment beforehuman consumption.

“Based on the results andgeneral best practice, werecommend people have theirwater tested by anindependently accreditedlaboratory if they intend todrink it,” she said.

The review revealedoxidising groundwaterconditions in Tararua andinland Horowhenua withreducing conditions moreprominent in Manawatu,Rangitikei and coastalHorowhenua.

“Oxidised groundwater isshallower and often more

susceptible to the effects of landuse and may include elevatedlevels of nutrients such asnitrate,” Ms Matthews said.“Water in reducing conditionsis usually older, deeper andslower moving and may presenthigher levels of iron, manganese and arsenic.”

Iron, manganese and arsenicoccur naturally in earthcomprising old swamp depositsthat are common throughoutthe Manawatu basin.

“As groundwater movesthrough the strata, metalsdissolve out of minerals presentin soil and rocks and can affectwater supplies through

discolouration, unpleasanttaste or health risks.”

Elevated arsenic levels werefound in five bores in coastalareas and bore owners havebeen informed.

“It’s important to note thatthese elevations occurnaturally and there are no realsurprises in this information. Itis a reminder of the need tocheck before you drink,” MsMatthews said.

To best manage theirdrinking water supply andminimise the risk ofcontamination, well ownersshould ensure their bore is wellmaintained to prevent the entry

of surface water and sited wellaway from underground septictanks. The surrounding areakept clear of chemicals andrubbish. Stock should also befenced away from the well.

If owners suspect a problemwith their water supply,Horizons recommends having itanalysed by an accredited IANZlaboratory.

An information brochurecontaining further informationand contact details for furtheradvice as well as a guidelinedocument for well owners isavailable from Horizons’ officesand websitewww.horizons.govt.nz.

Manawatu River Accord making a differenceA progress report detailingthe work achieved under theManawatu River Leaders’Accord was presented toManawatu River Leaders’Forum members andMinistry for theEnvironmentrepresentatives last week atTe Rangimarie Marae,Rangiotu.

In March 2012 theManawatu River Leaders’Forum received $5.2 millionin funding from the CentralGovernment’s Fresh Startfor Fresh Water Clean-UpFund, assisting with over $30million in work

programmes. Fundingpartners include HorizonsRegional Council, TararuaDistrict Council, ManawatuDistrict Council,Horowhenua DistrictCouncil and DairyNZ. Thecombined funding wasspread over eight projectsranging from wastewatertreatment upgrades, tostream fencing, to native fishand whitebait habitatrestorations, environmentalfarm plans and communityprojects.

Over the past two yearsthe funding package hasachieved:

■ Wastewater treatmentupgrades improving waterquality at six sites.■ 208km of stream fencingcompleted.■ Over 66,000 plantsplanted.■ Eight fish barriers fixed.■ 11 community groupscompleted 14 projects.■ 98 Environmental FarmPlans completed.

Manawatu River Leaders’Accord independentchairman Richard Thompsonis pleased with the combinedwork of industry, localgovernment, landowners, iwi, environmental and

community groups comingtogether over a variety ofprojects, all with the healthof the Manawatu River at theforefront of their minds.

He said the health of theManawatu River is not, however, the soleresponsibility of Accordmembers. “It is somethingthat the whole communityneeds to take ownership of.Through collective action wecan make a lastingdifference,” he said.

Some of the highlightsinclude more than 100km ofstream fencing funded andcommitted to by landowners

and over 420 peopleparticipating in communityrun initiatives.

Students aiming for success

LEVIN Intermediate student Olivia Harvey concentrates on her bowlas it curves down the green, watched by teammate Billie Paki andpresident of the Levin North Indoor Bowling Club, Bruce Pedley.

By TANYAWOOD

A group of Levin Intermediatestudents have their eye on the‘bowl’, hoping to make the gradeto compete at next year’s AIMSGames.

The 18 students are beingtaught the fine art of indoorbowling by a group of dedicatedmembers from the Levin NorthIndoor Bowling Club.

The club approached theschool last year to encouragestudents to give the sport a go. Atthis year’s AIMS games, theschool sent two bowlers and cameback with a silver medal insingles. The games are held everyOctober in Tauranga for primaryand intermediate schools tocompete in a number of sportingcodes.

Levin North Indoor BowlingClub president Bruce Pedley isaiming to send at least two teams, eight players in total, to nextyear’s games.

“We’ll be training rightthrough to next October, this is along-term thing,” Mr Pedley said.“The kids are really enjoying it,and there’s already quite a bit ofnatural talent coming through. They get a real thrill when theyget close to the kitty [white ball].”

He said after just four weeksthe children are getting quitecompetitive. “They like to puttheir scores on the board.”

Olivia Harvey, 12, had neverplayed the sport before andthought it would be like ten-pinbowling.

“I wasn’t disappointed. It’smore difficult than it looks. You’ve got to get the angle andweight of the bowl right so it rollsin a curve to get as close to thekitty as possible.”

After just two week’s practice,

Olivia said she was getting betterand was keen to make the schoolrepresentative team.

Associate school principalSandra Pedley said interest in thesport had grown this term.

“In the first week I had just

one carload of children but oncethey started talking about it,more children have come along. It’s great for children who don’tplay a sport and gets themparticipating and involved in thecommunity.”

The delights of dragon fruitDiggingin

WALLY RICHARDS

A few weeks ago my partner andI spied a very different andinteresting new fruit call dragonfruit at our local grocer.

We purchased one to try, andto find out more about where itcomes from and any benefits itmay have health-wise.

My partner, who is from thePhilippines, did a bit of researchand found that people back in thePhilippines were cultivating thefruit for health and income.

The amount of vitamin C indragon fruit (pictured) is highand, because it is a natural fruit,it provides you with a richbalance of nutrients along withthe vitamin C. It is a good naturalsource of anti-oxidants, whichhelp to prevent the dangers offree radicals that can causecancer and other healthproblems.

Dragon fruit also has lots ofdietary fibre, with almost 1g offibre per 100g of the fresh fruit.

My partner tells me that in thePhilippines people eat the fruit tohelp prevent cancer and to assistin recovery. Other healthbenefits they consider the fruitgood for includes:

Heart - helps decrease badcholesterol levels and replenishgood levels, an excellent sourceof mono-unsaturated fats that

help the heart stay in greatcondition.

Fibre - its high fibre contentcan assist with poor digestionand constipation. Eating theflesh and seeds, which containgood protein, will help keep your

body fortified and satisfied.Antioxidants - which help rid

the body of free radicals andcancer-producing properties.

Diabetes - the high amount offibre in the fruit can ultimatelyhelp regulate diabetes,

stabilising blood sugar levels bysuppressing sugar spikes.

Reduces signs of aging - eatinga fruit rich in antioxidants canhelp keep the skin tight andyoung. You can even make a facemask using the fruit combined

with honey as a naturalalternative to anti-aging masks.

Suppresses arthritis -arthritis directly affects thejoints and causes severeirritation and immobility.Adding dragon fruit to your dietcan help you fight theseailments. Dragon fruit iscommonly referred to as the‘anti-inflammatory fruit’ in thePhilippines.

Avoiding acne - this treatmentis not just for teenagers. Rich invitamin C, this fruit becomes agreat ointment. Turn a slice ofdragon fruit into a paste andapply it to reddened areas onyour face or skin, then rinse withwater. For best results, use twicedaily.

Dragon fruit are the seed podsof a cacti family of which thereare three species:

Hylocereus undatus (Pitayablanca or White-fleshed Pitaya)has red-skinned fruit with whiteflesh. This is the most commonlyseen dragon fruit.

Hylocereus costaricensis(Pitaya roja or Red-fleshedPitaya, also known asHylocereus polyrhizus) has red-skinned fruit with red flesh.

Hylocereus megalanthus(Pitaya amarilla or YellowPitaya, also known asSelenicereus megalanthus) hasyellow-skinned fruit with whiteflesh. The fruit can weigh from150 to 600 grams; some may reachone kilogram.

On Friday read how to growdragon fruit from seed.■ For gardening problems ringmeat 0800 466-464 (Palmerston North357-0606); [email protected]

MINISPRINT action was fast and furious as 48p ChristianHermansen, was chased hard by 93p Karl McGill and 2nzp JamieLarsen.

The weather may not have beenthe kindest for speedway fans onSaturday but the action was ashot as ever, with round one of theLucus Oils Superstock Series anda bonus stockcar teams race.

Local superstocks racersincluding Chad Ace, who hadbeen putting in some consistentlygood performances at both ArenaOne and Te Marua speedway inWellington, and Peter and AsherRees, Wayne Hemi, Graeme Barrand Benji Sneddon were on form, but it was Wellingtonian DaleRobertson who won the openinground of the series.

Robertson was clinicalthroughout the three heats, keeping out of trouble andfocused on gaining points. With asecond and third place to hiscredit it was enough to take theoverall points lead.

It was a highly-charged field of24 Superstocks that lined up forthe opening series heat, includingthree Wellingtonians and 18nShane Harwood from Nelson. 58pPeter Bengston made short workof the competition from grid four, ahead of 112p Shaune Pearson, inhis first outing of the season, 89wDale Robertson and 3nzp GraemeBarr.

Spins dented the chances of10p Peter Rees and 8p Scott Miers, but Rees would remain incontention by virtue of winningheat two. 57p Dave Tarrant wason pace to finish second, ahead of88p Jack Miers and 591p WayneHemi. 36p Jake Baker’spromising debut was ended whenhis new car shed a wheel.

After two heats Robertson andBengston were equal on top with41 points, 79p Kerry Humphreyand 88p Jack Miers were next on38, with Rees and Hemi on 36.

An action-packed final heatsparked off when Barr tangledwith Bengston, costing the latter avaluable position and causing apileup.

The next stoppage was for aspectacular collision near the pitgate involving 5p GarethEdwards. As the race panned out,Jack Miers was in second placewith Robertson in fourth, seeingthem equal on points, but Miers

was forced to retire in a cloud ofsmoke.

Sneddon and Shane Harwoodwere going well, until Sneddonlost a wheel and Harwood waspushed into the concrete by 126pAsher Rees. Chad Ace, 4p, pickedup the chequered flag in anexcellent race win, followed byRobertson, Rees and Bengston.

A quick tally of the pointsshowed that Dale Robertson hadtaken out the opening round ofthe Lucas Oil Superstock Serieswith 64 points, ahead of Bengstonon 62 and Rees on 59.

A late-scheduled teams racesaw Probables (Pumas) team faceoff against the ManawatuSteelers, who were due to race atHuntly until bad weather cannedthe meeting.

The writing was on the wallearly on when 62p Darrel Wallacewas walled by 99p Ron Tye, and11p Peter Rees and 126p AsherRees took to the front for theProbables, shielded at times by

67p Alec Wilson and 75p GavinTaniwha.

The Steelers’ highlight camewhen the damaged 501p BrentLowe timed a hit on Peter Rees toperfection, taking the race leaderon a spectacular wallride, thoughhe landed back on four wheels

and carried on.In the minisprints 48p

Christian Hermansen, aftermissing the season opener, hasgradually got into the swing ofthings and provided a welcomechallenge to the dominant 2nzpJamie Larsen. The two were

almost glued together over allthree races, with Larsenprevailing in the first two outingsand Hermansen striking backwith an excellent feature win. Theonly driver to upset their applecart was 4w Shane Simpson, whowon the second heat ahead of thebattling pair.
