SirenSo, Brian Gore is unimpressed with thefire siren in our town. I have a suggestionfor you — take your two hands and placethem over your ears.
Whenever I hear that siren I pauseand give a thought to all involved, hope
for a good outcome, and give a heartfeltthanks to our fireies who must dropeverything at a moment’s notice.
Having to stop a conversation palesinto insignificance beside this!
And the court has to be adjourned? So?? Are you serious, Mr Gore?
There are plenty of trucks thunderingthrough the centre of town making justas much noise.
I wonder if he would still becomplaining if it were his property that
was on fire, or his loved one trapped in acar wreck.
Long may the siren blast over ourlittle town, reminding us to be thankfulfor the dedication of a few, always willingto answer the call.
Actually, I have a better suggestion.Take an empty container and wheneveryou hear the fire siren put all your coinsinto it. When it’s full, donate it to our firebrigade, with your gratitude.
KATE LANG
National flagI wonder if Mr Stirling has forgotten thathe wrote: With a change of flag therewould also be a need to change thecurrent National Anthem, particularlythe religious references . . . Now I amwondering exactly which ‘religious refer-ences’ he is referring to.
Just for the record, I can assure himthat I don’t read everything he writes-not by a long shot.

Focus on breast health of elderlyBE AWARE
More than 700 women over the age of 70 will be diagnosed withbreast cancer in New Zealand and Breast Cancer AotearoaCoalition (BCAC) want older women to take time to practice‘breast awareness’.BCAC chair Libby Burgess said the number of older womendiagnosed with breast cancer is only going to grow as thepopulation ages. ‘‘We value our older women and we want themto take care of themselves. That’s why we’re asking those over 70to remain vigilant about breast health because you’re never tooold to get breast cancer.’’She said it is vital older womenmonitor their breasts not just forlumps, but for other signs such as a rash or dimpling of the skin, pain in the breast and nipple changes, and to seekmedicalattention as early as possible.
The number of women aged over70 diagnosed with breast cancerin New Zealand has hit a recordhigh and Breast Cancer AotearoaCoalition (BCAC) is urging olderwomen to be vigilant about theirbreast health.
Nearly a quarter of all breastcancer cases nationally are inwomen aged 70 and over, andBCAC is concerned older womenthink they are ‘beyond’ gettingbreast cancer.
This year’s fundraiser themefor the breast cancer charity —Show Your Heart for WomenLiving with Breast Cancer — willfocus on breast health for olderwomen.
Funds raised will help to pay
for BCAC’s Step by Step supportand information pack, distributed free-of-charge to thethousands of Kiwi womendiagnosed with breast cancereach year.
The campaign is supported byArnott’s Tim Tam, with 20 centsfrom every pack of Arnott’s TimTam biscuits sold in Countdown
supermarkets between May 12and June 8 going to BCAC.
Renowned New Zealand artistPenny Stotter is also backing thecampaign with a beautifullimited edition design of astylised heart on a ceramic platewhich will be gifted to a handfulof lucky winners.■ For an opportunity to win aceramic plate and a year’ssupply of Tim Tam biscuits, visitBCAC’s websitewww.breastcancer.org.nz/show-your-heart, BCAC’s Facebookpage www.facebook.com/BreastCancerAotearoaCoalition,or the Tim Tam Facebook pagewww.facebook.com/ArnottsTimTamNZ .

Former chairman apologisesFormer chairman of the Foxton
Community Board, Basil Vertongen, hasapologised to Foxton Beach residentsChristina and George Paton for burning anewspaper photograph of the couple at theofficial opening of the Foxton Beach seawallin 2009, and accusing them and otherseawall objectors of causing delays and$200,000 in increased costs to ratepayers. The Patons said the accusations were deeplymisleading and had called on Mr Vertongento retract the claims which he initiallyrefused. The seawall went ahead but MrVertongen denied he had defamed thePatons. In their defamation claim againstMr Vertongen, the Patons argued they werenot responsible for any increased costs ordelays, noting the Department ofConservation had also opposed the seawallconsent applications. The wording of MrVertongen’s apology and other terms areconfidential under the settlement.

Retailers busyHorowhenua retailers report a busy
couple of days leading up to Mother’s Day.Figures released from Groupon show Kiwisspend an estimated $161 million on mumsfor Mother’s Day spending on average $75.73per Kiwi mum. Choosing the right gift takestime and Kiwi’s spent, on average, 107minutes shopping for present. Sadly thefigures show not all mums are delightedwith their presents, but with only 24 percent wanting to have input as to what theyget, it’s probably not surprising.

Preparing for retirement
LVN140514splseminars2
ALLAN Birrell from Age Concern says toomany people under estimate the realimpact of retirement and is hosting anumber of free seminars at Te Takere onplanning for retirement.

Each seminar lastsapproximately 90minutes.May 14 - Financial adviser BernardLong on what to expect, 6pm.May 21 - John Dixon from theMinistryof Social Development on applying forNational Superannuation, 6pm.May 28 -Bernard Long on putting afinancial plan together, 6pm.June 4 - Carl Houston on keepingactive after retirement, 5pm.June 11 - Healthy eating, time to bearranged. There is no requirement to attend allof the seminars. Retirement should be something to lookforward to, but people still underestimatewhat retirement means and the pitfalls thatcan lie ahead.
Allan Birrell, from Age Concern Levin, says retirement can be a rewardingexperience. ‘‘It’s a chance to do all thosethings we planned or wanted to do butnever had time, but planning andpreparation is key,’’ he said.
Many people are certainly not preparedfinancially, he said, and need to learn howto transition from paid employment andthink about how they will spend theircoming years.
‘‘The sad thing is there are still too manymales who think retirement will be a greatlife, putting their feet up and watchingsport on TV all day, and within two years ofretiring they’re dead.’’
He said men are also less likely to keepup social contacts once they leave work, and health issues can become a majorproblem. ‘‘Men are not great on gettingregular check ups with GPs.’’
Mr Birrell says retirees also have toconsider where they will live.
‘‘We see quite a few who leave familyand friends and retire to Horowhenuawhich is all well and good when you’re ableto drive and get around. But we don’t have apublic transport system here and once olderpeople lose their licence, they can feelisolated and lonely.’’
A five-week course of free seminars onplanning for retirement is being hosted byAge Concern at Te Takere, beginning thisweek.
Financial adviser Bernard Long willlook at KiwiSaver, NationalSuperannuation, selling down a house andhow to budget for retirement, as well as best
investment practices. John Dixon, from theMinistry of Social Development, will gothrough the application process forsuperannuation.
The last two seminars will concentrateon the importance of keeping fit and active, and healthy eating.

Committee letting club NZ downwith BEVANSANSON
Down at the local sports clubthings are not what they shouldbe.
You’re there with a fewmates enjoying their company, then up to the bar-leaner walksone of the committee with astranger.
The committee member, forarguments sake let us call himMaurice, introduces hisassociate, let’s call himDonghua, to you and your pals.
‘‘Dong’’ (we Kiwis love anickname) says he wants to jointhe club. He shouts a few beers, buys a few raffle tickets andMaurice vouches for the bloke.
Before Maurice can say,‘‘How bout another jug Dongyme lad’’, this bloke is signed upas a member of the club.
You’re a bit uneasy aboutthis as you get the feelingMaurice sold a membership, rather than grant one on thebasis of character.
You mention your concernsto the club president. Let us callhim John.
John says this is all news tohim and if anyone hasmentioned it to him in the pasthe can’t remember.
Plausible deniability hasbeen one of John’s tools ofchoice since he got the top job.
A few beers later, Donghuastarts talking big. He’smentions his four-star hotel andanother property developmentidea he’s got going. Well, youthink that’s what he’s saying, given his grasp of the local lingois a tad limited.
But using a few pint glasses
and empty pie wrappers asvisual aids we get the gist of thestory.
What the Dongsta (I love itwhen nicknames morph!)doesn’t know is that he’s nottalking to a group of fools.
You know the hotel isactually a glorified hostel wellon the way to becoming a cityfringe slum. Still, as Mauricesays, he did buy a lot of raffletickets.
Things then start to go realbad when Donghua’s Mrs turnsup and he slaps her for spillingvodka cruiser over his favouriteslacks.
The cops turn up. Mauricehas a word with them trying tovouch for Donghua in a waythat could easily be consideredtrying to influence a policeinvestigation.
More than a few clubmembers are getting tired ofthese all too regular favoursbeing granted to people who thecommittee say can make theclub the better place.
Like the guys who said theywould refurbish the clubroomson the proviso we let them putin some pokie machines. All wereally got was a few clubmembers spending money theycan’t afford.
The committee also sold offthe number three trainingground. We were told this wouldresult in trickledown benefitsfor all club members. But stillthe price of a beer at the bargoes up and the kids, the club’sfuture , have lost somethingthey could well need down thetrack.
But I hear the committeevoted to upgrade the sausagerolls at their meetings to hamon the bone.
The coach of the netballteam, let’s call her Judith, organised a mate to supply theclub milk for cuppas andprotein shakes.
We’re all for helping ourmates out but there wassomething not right about thatwhole affair.
And boy does old Judith getangry when you raise thesubject.
Still, with Anne’s lacklustrepolicing of the midcourt andHekia shooting like she’s blindin one eye and can’t see out theother, it’s little wonder coachCollins’s face often resembles asmacked bottom.
Captain Paula’s scaring thesolo mums in the team byannouncing that if they don’tattend every Tuesday nighttraining she’ll cut their accessto the halftime oranges hasn’texactly boosted morale either.
The upshot of all this is that
you and a few likeminded anddedicated club members havecome to the conclusion that toomany on the committee haveembraced an ethos of cronyism
and self-interest.An ethos that appears to be
encouraged.The next annual meeting is
going to be interesting.

Autisticwritertriumphs throughthe positiveThe Autistic Brain—Exploring the Strength of aDifferent Kind ofMindby Temple GrandinRandomHouse, $29.99..................................................This is definitely neither a ‘‘generalinterest’’ sort of book nor a book for thosemildly curious about autism. However, forthosewith a deep interest in autism, andwho have scientific background, this bookis fascinating. Grandin is a ‘‘highlyfunctioning’’ autistic, meaning shefunctionswell in societywith her autism, but is typically autistic in herwriting, which is detailed to the point of exhaustingeven a determined reader.Grandin has published books on autism,
lectureswidely, has gained a PhD, and isnowaProfessor at the Colorado StateUniversity in Fort Collins. Thiswouldmake it seem that her autism is only a verymild form—but this is not so. The authorhas had adjustment difficultieswith herautism, especiallywhen shewas growingupwhen the term ‘‘autism’’ was almostunknown and rarely diagnosed. It is herdetermination to understand herdifficulties, predicated on an obviouslyhigh intelligence that has enabledGrandinto become such an encouraging expert.Thewriting, aided by a non-autistic
writer, is clear, highly documentedwithmultiple references and a thorough index—but is occasionallywearyingly detailed—a typically autistic virtually obsessive-compulsive presentation. Yet, this shouldbe regarded as a strength not aweakness. This is an excellent example of amajorpoint Grandin emphasises: autistics can
have qualities thatshould be regardedas positive, although perhapsodd to ‘‘normals’’.Evenmoderatelyaffected autisticscan be encouragedto be productiveindividuals if theirlimitations aretaken into accountand their positiveattributes
encouraged.Grandin discusses everything an
interested individualmight everwant toknowabout autism. Her knowledge isencyclopedic and her ability to explaindifficult neurologic and physiologiccomplexities is phenomenal.Whenappropriate, excellent diagrams andphotos are presented. Through her ownexperiences and those of other autistics, the reader slowly begins to understand thecomplexity of this still highly debatedsubject. Two of themany aspectsGrandincovers are of particular importance.First, Grandin says that there are
observable brain-structure deficits that ifnot diagnostic of autism appear to beconsistentwith the clinical abnormalities.Second, there is a self-testwhich althoughnot for self-diagnosis is useful to portraythewide range of behaviours and attitudespeculiar to autistics of various subtypesand degrees of severity. This as amarvellously informative and
highly encouraging bookwritten by anautisticwho has forged ahead: not despiteher autism, but because of it.

Labour propose lessinterest, more savingBy ROBMCCANNLabour candidate for Otaki ‘If people spend toomuch, or
house prices rise too fast, inflation goes up and the
Reserve Bank pours water onthe economy to ensure we
don’t get burnt.’
Once upon a time wethought the world wasflat and, if you sailedtoo far, your shipwould fall off the edgeof the earth.
When Labourannounced it wasgoing to changemonetary policy in New Zealand bybroadening the Reserve Bank’sobjective beyond inflation andproviding some tools to achieve this, the National Party became quitehysterical with warnings of impendingdisaster.
It soon became apparent that theirreal issue with the policy was that theyhadn’t thought of it first.
It’s a simple concept. The ReserveBank is focused on inflation and has fewtools to control it.
If people spend too much, or houseprices rise too fast, inflation goes upand the Reserve Bank pours water onthe economy to ensure we don’t getburnt.
They do this by raising interestrates. If, like me, you have a mortgageon your house, you end up paying agreat deal more to the bank in interest.
Labour is proposing that instead ofpaying increased interest to the bank, you pay more into a compulsoryKiwiSaver that you get to keep.
That takes the heat out of theeconomy, and at the same time, increases your own personal savings, rather than increasing the profits of theAustralian-owned banks.
You keep the money! It’s a simplewin-win policy, one that even DonBrash, the former leader of Nationaland the Act parties, and a formerReserve Bank Governor, said hadmerit.
Add together this policyannouncement, our intention tointroduce a capital gains tax, ourKiwiBuild housing policy, universalKiwiSaver and reduced costs tobusinesses through NZ Power, it’s easyto see that Labour is offering analternative plan that will help Kiwifamilies and ensure our economy cancreate better jobs and higher wages.
Bill English has since tried tosuggest this is going to hurt low-incomeearners.
This seems a bit rich and is the firsttime National has cared about thisgrowing segment of our country.
Labour will increase the minimumwage and, where we can, introduce aliving wage so everyone will be betteroff.
Let’s give Kiwi families a fair go, andstop clinging to monetary policies thatthe Flat Earth Society would have beenproud of.

GOING GREEN
Greens want a strong, healthy HorowhenuaBy SAMFERGUSONGreen Party candidate ‘A strong, healthy
community is more than justwealth. It takes leadership and
the people to make ithappen.’
To be a strong and healthyHorowhenua we need tobe financially stable andenvironmentallysustainable.
We need to honour our culture, havejobs for our workers, respect ourneighbours and community members, share our skills and resources, haveaccess to health services and provideopportunities for all members to learnand be educated. We need to feel safe.
A strong, healthy community is morethan just wealth. It takes leadership andthe people to make it happen.
It is a series of small initiatives thatare set in motion, and it is also the clearstrategy and direction.
I write this because it is a big part ofthe Green Party vision and a big part ofwhat I stand for.
We seek a society that is fair, asociety that judges itself based on itspoorest members, a society that giveseveryone a fair opportunity in life, regardless of where they were born andraised.
These are principles that NewZealand used to hold, and over the past
few decades they have slowlydisappeared.
The Green Party wants to help usrebuild our strong communities.Communities with smart, green jobs, safe for our children to walk and bike toschool, where our homes are warmduring winter because they areinsulated and we can afford to heatthem.
We want a Horowhenua where wehave primary health services that arelocal and we have nurses in schools tokeep our children healthy. We want toreturn the community back to thecommunity, where the people areinvolved in deciding our future.
A vote for the Green Party is a votefor the most progressive government inmore than 30 years and will help us growstronger, healthier communities in theHorowhenua and Kapiti region.

Our two little budgies moved in and arefilling the home with their chatter and theirengaging ways. Time was spent makingAnzac biscuits for everyone to enjoy. There were craft sessions to make poppiesto wear, posters and decorationshonouring those who served their countryin times gone by.

Cleaning up moss, liverworts, slimes and more
Diggingin
WALLY RICHARDS
Bryophytes and embryophytes are thebotanical names given to mosses, lichen, liverworts, hornworts, molds, algae andslimes. These are what one could labelprimate plant-like forms, which were thefirst land-type plants on the planet, millionsof years ago.
It was as a result of these primitive plantforms that began the process of buildingsoils from rocks split and powdered by theaction of water and ice.
Members of this diverse plant family arefound all over the world, many growing inplaces where no other types of plants couldgrow, so in a sense they are still creatinggrowing conditions for higher plant formsto grow.
Many bryophytes are attractive withfeather or fern-like structures, whereothers look more like something from analien landscape.
When bryophytes grow in places we donot want them to grow, they become anuisance, just like weeds.
Lichen and liverworts appear to be ableto grow on most surfaces, including glass, public footpaths, fences and roof tiles, which are favorite spots for them. Verticalglass is difficult for them, but glass roofs ofglasshouses are not.
Algae and mosses growing on pathsmake for a slippery condition when wet andcan cause serious injury if people slip andfall.
Lichens that colonise on the trunks andbranches of plants and trees look unsightlyand can lead to rots and losses.
Mosses growing in lawns are anotherannoyance, making the lawn unsightly andsuffocating our preferred grasses.
More often than not, whereverbryophytes appear, it means a war toeradicate and control. When action is nottaken they proliferate, spreading out tocause more harm.
Bryophytes cannot be controlled easilyby scrapping off, as residues will be left thatallow them to re-establish.
In lawns, gardeners resort to sulphate ofiron to burn off mosses, which is only atemporary fix as the acidity of the iron onlyburns off the top of the moss, allowing it toreestablish again fairly quickly.
There are various products advertised toclean up bryophytes, such as ones that aresprayed on then left for weathering toremove.
Many of these are expensive andbryophytes are like ants — you can nevereradicate them, they will always come back.
Some years back a chemical calledbenzalkonium chloride, which was used inthe medical industry for sterilisinginstruments, was discovered to be a boon inthe control of bryophytes without harmingother plants.
The first product to use benzalkoniumfor the control of mosses was Surrender and
the writer picked up on this many years agoand introduced its use to gardeners inPalmerston North.
It became popular but was only availablein the commercial pack of one litre.
I convinced Yates NZ to market theproduct for New Zealand gardeners, atwhich time it became available in 200mlbottles.
A product emerged with the sameformulation called Yield and McGregorscame out with McGregors Yield MossControl, also in a 200ml bottle, at a morecompetitive price.
These proved popular and effective, resulting in other chemical controls on themarket.
Over the following years these brands ofthe chemical benzalkonium have becomefairly expensive, leading to complaintsfrom gardeners as to their cost-effectiveness.
The products are formulated at500g/litre benzalkonium chloride, in theform of a soluble concentrate, and used atthe rates of 25-50ml per litre of water, meaning the 200ml bottle is only able toproduce between four to eight litres ofspray.
This is not a lot if you have a big area tocover and need to reapply when theproblems reappear.
Many mosses and liverworts need the50ml-per-litre dosage to have effectivecontrol, where some other bryophytes, such as lichen and algae, can be controlledsuccessfully at rates of 10-20ml per litre.
Unfortunately the strength of only10-20ml for lichen and algae information isnot always made available and gardenerscan waste product using unnecessarilyhigher rates on these easier-to-controlbryophytes.
Another brand is available from somegarden centres using the same formulationand called Moss and Liverwort Control.Available in both 200ml and 500mlcontainers, it is more affordable incomparison to the previous brands.
Another interesting aspect is that thechemical benzalkonium chloride is atrackable chemical by ERMA that does notaffect the home garden market inquantities of up to one litre.
But if a gardener has in storage overone litre of the concentrate, then they mustby law have a handler’s licence.
This is obtained by passing a one-dayagrichemical course.
I congratulate ERMA in taking tightercontrols on agricultural chemicals whichis in the interest of us all and theenvironment.
The new regulations also mean moresafety information must be on the labels ofmany chemicals, which should help usersbe more careful while handling and using.
Moss and Liverwort Control’s labelshas all the new requirements for safety, which at first glance may give the userconcerns about using the product. This isgood as more care is likely to be taken andit is a great advantage to the user as youwould certainly not want to get a splash ofthe concentrate (or the diluted product) inyour eyes.
By wearing rubber or latex gloves, gumboots, protective waterproof clothing, eye protection and a spraying mask while
mixing with water and spraying shouldkeep you safe. One of the great advantagesof this product is that you can safely spray itover other plants without harming them, but to be sure of this, it is advised you waterthe preferred plant’s foliage with the hose 30minutes after spraying.
It only takes 30 minutes for Moss andLiverwort Control to get into the targetbryophyte and do its job. If it rains after thattime, the product will not be deactivated.
When using the product, adjust yourspray nozzle away from a mist to a morepowerful option as it needs a bit of force toget into the bryophyte. The product issystematic as it goes right through thebryophyte, killing it completely and oftenmaking the target area difficult forreestablishment for some time.
The product must not be mixed withother sprays to avoid chemical reactions,
but other sprays can be applied to the targetarea later. For instance, if you have moss ina lawn: Firstly spray with Moss andLiverwort Control and the next day a lawnherbicide and Thatch Busta could beapplied, mixed together. The Thatch Bustawill also help clean up the material leftbehind by the dead moss.
Once sprayed and the area lightlywatered, 30-plus minutes later the re-entryof children, pets or wildlife can be allowed. The product can be used indoors in theweaker solutions to control molds inshowers, on the backs of curtains, etc.
With the right knowledge andprecautions applied, this product efficientand safe to use.■ If you have gardening problems, ringme at0800 466-464 (PalmerstonNorth 357-0606).Email: [email protected]

Old Boys worn down by Waikanae

By TANYAWOOD
A polished Waikanae side proved just toostrong on the day for College Old Boys Ateam at Levin Domain on Saturday.
COB manager Dean Thomas said histeam competed well in the first half, holding Waikanae to be down 10-7 athalftime, but the Kapiti side ‘‘seemed tofind another gear’’ in the second half.
A missed penalty kick early on in thegame by COB was followed by a try fromTyson Mackie, normally a number eightbut playing blindside flanker in thismatch. First-five Lafi Salu converted thetry.
‘‘We had penalties in the second halfwhich were kickable but with the scoregetting up so high [against us], we had tochase the seven pointers,’’ said Thomas.
‘‘We made few mistakes overall butjust couldn’t match Waikanae on the day.Quite a few of our main players were outwith injury and we were relying on a fewplayers playing in different positions, so
they did well. Waikanae played good, simple footie.
‘‘We could see the tactics they wereusing but just didn’t seem to be able tocounteract it.’’
The final was score 42-7.Thomas said the team has won four
and lost three games to date, trackingwell ahead of last year’s two game wintotal.
‘‘If we can maintain our current thirdposition on the table come semifinalstime, we’ll be quite happy.’’
