Growth objectiveIt is concerning reading that a study is tobe performed to investigate our region’seconomic growth which targets doublingthe exports of the primary productssector. This sector is already performingwell, and certainly above it's weight, compared to other industries in theregion.

Farming has been the cause of sig-nificant environmental issues in ourregion. We still have one of the worstpolluted rivers and lakes in New Zealand,of which local and central government areonly paying lip service with yet morestudies, rather than tackling the realproblem.

More primary production will onlylead to more pollution in our rivers, lakesand sea.

Cows produce around 14 times thewaste of human waste (some estimates areup to 40 times!), we have 448,000 dairycows in our region excreting the equiva-lent of 6.2 million people and this doesn'teven include beef, pigs, sheep wastes orforestry silt runoff!

This waste (some is partially treated)ultimately ends up in our rivers, lakes andeventually the sea.

A large number of people in our regionuse our rivers, lakes and sea for recrea-

tional activitiesand for food gath-ering. Theseactivities rangefrom swimming, surfing, kiteboarding, yachting, kayaking towhitebaiting, eeling and fishingfrom land andfrom boats. Everyone of these peopleare at risk of their

food and recreation source being takenfrom them permanently by farmers tryingto double their primary exports. When isenough, enough . . . when ALL the rivers, lakes and sea are gone?

Public health trustsA recent news item has highlightedfinancial accountability problemsassociated with the Te Roopu Taurima oManukau Trust which receivesapproximately $30 million per year fromthe New Zealand Government.

The Maori Health Trust provides sup-port services for intellectually disabledcitizens and has been subject to twointernal audits as well as a forensic auditby private consultants in recent months.

The internal audits by the Ministry ofHealth concluded that: “There appears tobe a lack of financial literacy amongBoard Members”, resulting in the chair-man standing down from the Board.

The internal audits also revealed a carfleet of 126 vehicles with private vehicleuse permitted by the board and the chiefexecutive with petrol accounts of up to$150 per week.

The audit also raised questions con-cerning payments made to contractors aswell as the chairman together with poorgovernance by the board.

While the provision of services tointellectually disabled citizens is a neces-sary and important aspect of a Govern-ment health provider's duty of care, itwould appear that where a trust isestablished and provided with tax payersfunds, the need for capable governanceand efficient administration is an import-ant necessity with the trust being subjectto regular audits by the Ministry ofHealth.

Foxton winsemis thriller

TRY TIME: Foxton blindsideflanker Brendan Robinson onhis way to scoring a try whileShannon players MattPilkington, back, and MauriceManihera can only watch.

By TANYAWOOD

The Senior Reserve semifinalbetween Shannon and Foxton onSaturday was grassroots rugby atits best, giving supporters somenailbiting moments as each teamfought for pride of place in theupcoming final.

Going head-to-head at EastonPark, in front of about 200spectators, this was predicted tobe one of the closest semifinals byrugby aficionados.

Ball possession swung like apendulum between the two teams, with first blood to Foxton kickingan easy penalty. The lead wasshortlived as Shannon struckback with a penalty, to level 3-all,but then a breakaway try off amaul from Foxton, converted, putthem back in the lead within thefirst 15 minutes, at 10-3.

Solid defence from both teamskept tries at bay for a while,Shannon missing two penaltykicks in the interim, until afumbled ball by Foxton gaveShannon a breakaway try to closethe halftime score tantalisinglyclose at 10-8.

A penalty awarded to Foxton atthe start of the second half sawthem creep further ahead to 13-8,cementing the lead to 18-8 with atry run deep into the corner, notconverted.

Another penalty kickfurthered the Foxton lead to 21-8but a fire had been lit underShannon and they responded witha try, converted, in the last six

minutes of the game.Shannon applied the pressure

to the last second and came closeto scoring but were held off byFoxton, who won 21-15.

Foxton tryscorers wereblindside flanker BrendanRobinson and fullback TonyWilliams. First-five Andre Kauritook the conversion and threepenalties.

Shannon second-five LiamO’Connor scored both his team’stries while hooker Darius Rurukutook the penalty and conversion.

Shannon coach Mike Williamssaid, overall, the game wasexcellent but the team was “guttedto lose”. “We missed our kicks andthat was definitely a big part ofwhy we lost but hats off to Foxton, they played really well and goodluck to them [in the final].”

Foxton coach Nick McVeighfelt his team got off to a slow start.“Once we settled down, we got towork. I’m extremely happy withthe team’s performance. Shannon-Foxton games are always goodand tend to raise the performanceof both teams when they play eachother. It’s always guaranteed aclose game.”

Going into the final as theunderdogs, McVeigh said the boyswould give it everything they’vegot. Foxton last won the seniorreserves final in 2005.

Foxton meet Ngati Toa, whobeat Paraparaumu 38-22 in theother semifinal, in the Bill MuirCup Final at Levin Domain onSaturday.

Funerals today are becoming more uniqueand representative of the deceasedand their family’s desire to rememberthem in a particular way. Choices madeby the grieving family will ensure thememory of the person is honoured andcherished. These choices include but arenot limited to where and when the servicewill be held, who will be involved, andwhat the content of the service will be.Some services will be dictated by cultureand tradition or ethnic considerations.Others will not feel bound by those sameconsiderations.

CREMATIONOver 60% of families in New Zealandnow choose cremation as their preferredmethod. Cremation usually takes place

following a funeral service, held either in acrematorium chapel, or in another venuesuch as a church or funeral home chapel. It may be appropriate to have a committalservice at the crematorium if the mainservice has been held elsewhere. Anotheroption is for the funeral director to takethe casket to the crematorium with no

further attendance or ceremony. Manypeople are curious about cremation, andthere are numerous myths surroundingthe process of cremating a body.• One of the enduring fears is that the

body is removed from the casket priorto cremation. This is not the case. Theentire casket containing the body isplaced in the cremator and reduced toashes under controlled conditions andvery high temperatures.

• Another fear is that more than onecasket will be cremated at a time andthe ashes returned may not be thoseof your loved one. There is room in thecremator for only one casket and theprocess is carried out in line with verystrict guidelines, which ensures that thecorrect ashes are returned to a family.

The ashes are then broken down andplaced in a simple container. Thecontainers can then be placed in asuitable urn, which can be provided byyour funeral director. There is a far greater range of optionsavailable regarding the final restingplace of the ashes than there is withearth burial. Ashes may be buried in acemetery plot, memorial garden or evenin a family property or favourite place. Many families choose to scatter theashes in an appropriate place or, in somecircumstances, they may even keep themat home. It is also possible for the ashesto be divided and one portion buried or

scattered while the other remains in thepossession of the family.

BURIALBurial is the most traditional form ofdisposal used in New Zealand, and in thepast was the most common choice. Manyfamilies appreciate having a grave to visitand tend. Generally, a burial will followa funeral service in another location, such as a chapel, church, or marae. Thetraditional practice is that, following theservice, mourners and family memberswill follow the hearse in a cortege. Thisis a slow moving procession that allowspeople to accompany the deceased ontheir final journey. In some larger cities, itis becoming normal practice to meet atthe cemetery at a specified time ratherthan form a cortege. This is due to thehigher traffic volumes and the fact thatmany motorists do not seem to show duerespect to a funeral procession. If thereis a cortege, the hearse and followingvehicles will travel with their headlights on,

to alert other road users to the nature ofthe procession. As with cremation, there

are cultural and faith based reasons whyburial is the only choice for some people.A lot of these reasons centre on the beliefthat the body needs to be whole in orderto be ready for the afterlife. It is importantto note that, in most cases, a burial will bemore expensive than a cremation. This isbecause there are three charges involved.• plot purchase• an interment (or digging) fee which also

covers maintenance• a memorial stone or plaque, in most cases.

MEMORIALSA memorial stone or plaque can act asa catalyst in helping with healing andcomfort for those grieving. For centuries, families have recognised the importanceof erecting memorials to the deceased. These can be elaborate or simplememorials, but they leave a permanentrecord of a life and are a place for familiesto visit and learn of their past. Choosinga memorial is a very personal matter, with many options to choose from, suchas lettering, artwork, photos, and so on.Most cemeteries provide areas suitablefor either full burial or cremation ashinterments. The timing of the placementof memorials is up to the families involved.

Time to get plantingDiggingin

WALLY RICHARDS

TIME TO PLANT: Now is a great time to plant rose bushes.

This is the very besttime of the year forplanting trees, shrubs, roses,

perennials also hardyvegetables and annualflowers.

This is because thedaylight hours are extending, which encourages new growthand the plants will haveseveral months to establishbefore summer dry spellsoccur.

It is also an excellent timeto transplant any existingplants that you wish to move.

Container plants withornamental plants such asroses or fruit trees that havenot had their roots pruned fora couple of years should alsobe attended to now.

Large plants in bigcontainers will require two orthree strong people to removethem from their containers sotheir roots can be pruned andplaced back into the samecontainer.

A little while back agardener asked me whatgardening tool did I considerthe most useful?

The answer gave theperson a bit of a shock when Isaid my 2.5 ton forklift.

Seeing as most of mygardening is done incontainers and in raisedgardens, because we are livingabove a warehouse with 90 percent of the outside area inconcrete.

The forklift allows me tomove container plants aroundand using protection for thetrunks of the trees and a rope, makes it easy to lift them outof the containers for rootpruning.

Every gardener shouldhave one, say I smiling.

A gardener phoned merecently asking how to givethe fruit trees and nativesthey are going to plant a really

good start in establishing. An excellent question and

an ideal topic at this time ofthe year.

What I am going to say iswhat I believe is the ultimatein establishing new plants, you need to decide whetheryou want to use all or some ofthe procedures in your ownplantings.

I remember years ago whenI had a garden centre we usedto have a product that was aslow release over a couple ofyears to be used whenplanting shrubs and trees.(Not sure if it’s still around, hopefully not)

The theory of the fertiliser

was to feed the plant for twoyears and not have the foodleached away during thatperiod.

I dont know if that actuallyworked or not but obviouslythat was the claim by themanufacture.

The fertiliser had nitrogen(N) 7 per cent, phosphorus (P)17 per cent, potassium (K) 5per cent and magnesium (Mg)12 per cent.

I don’t know what themagnesium was supposed toachieve in assistingdevelopment? I would havethought calcium and sulpurfar better minerals.

We have learnt that

microbes, Mycorrhizal fungi, earthworms and other soil lifeare of utmost importance tohealthy plants and that acidiccompounds such assuperphoshate and chlorinein tap water kills the soil life. This being so why would oneplace a fertiliser with 17 percent phosphorus (Superphosphate) in the hole whereyou want the best for yournew plant?

For food obviously a littlemild food in the form of Blood& Bone and Sheep ManurePellets would be perfect asthey will encourage growthand help the soil life to growalso.

Safety features burst into view for tourBy COLIN SMITH

The Volvo V40 “Get Under our Skin” show car reveals

the workings of the world-first pedestrian airbag system.

A modern motor vehicle is oneof the few products wherecustomers spend considerablemoney on technologies theywill probably never see andhopefully won’t need.

Many of the advanced safetytechnologies which feature inthe latest generation cars arehidden away from view andemerge in a split second in theunlikely event an emergencyarises.

A special exhibit, which ismaking a tour of New ZealandVolvo dealerships — includingMt Maunganui’s Duncan andEbbett in recent weeks, revealssome of the safety secrets ofmodern vehicles.

The “Get Under Our Skin”Volvo V40 show car has acutaway roof and inner doorskins which reveal the airbagsin a deployed state along withside intrusion beams andVolvo’s Side Impact ProtectionSystem. The car’s interiorairbags — frontal, driver’sknee, side and curtain airbags— are in an inflated state.

A Volvo V40 is the ideal

vehicle to use as a safetyexhibit because it features aworld-first pedestrianprotection airbag system.

The pedestrian safetysystem automatically slightlyraises the rear of the bonnetand then deploys a wide airbagacross the base of thewindscreen to reducepedestrian injuries. It’s thefirst production vehicle to use apedestrian airbag system.

“Volvo doesn’t wait tointroduce new technologieslike this on its top models andthen filter them down throughthe range,” says BrendanMcPherson, sales manager atMt Maunganui’s Duncan andEbbett.

“Volvo introduces newtechnologies on its next new

vehicle, so that is why the V40is the first to get the pedestrianairbag and it will be introducedin the next new models such asthe XC 90.”

Mr McPherson says the“Get Under Our Skin” showcar has created plenty ofinterest in the new Hewletts Rdshowroom.

“At first people have been abit surprised to see somethinglike this in the showroom butthen they are keen to take aclose look and see what it’s allabout,” he said.

“It’s an ideal way to let ourcustomers see what they arepaying for when they buy aVolvo.”
