As a briefguide:Principles 1-4 govern the collection of personal information,including the reasons why personal information may becollected, where it may be collected and how it is collected.Principle 5 governs the way personal information is stored. Along with grieving mum Margaret Smith, they arestarting the Horowhenua Bereaved Parents SupportGroup. The first meeting at the Jack Allen Communityhouse in Durham St starts at 7pm on November 11.

‘‘Meetings will be on the second Monday of eachmonth,’’ Lisa said.

‘‘Parents, caregivers or anyone who has lost a childis welcome to join us with or without a support person.’’

Rose and Lisa’s children died as young adults, so themums know age is not an issue.

‘‘It is life changing when you lose a child at any age,’’Lisa said. ‘‘The pain really doesn’t ease over time.’’

People who haven’t walked in their shoes don’tunderstand.

‘‘Some people might not be ready to come or feel itwas too long ago, some might not want to disclose theirpersonal circumstance and that’s fine,’’ Lisa said.

‘‘If someone just wants to call in for a cuppa and alisten that’s absolutely fine, you are welcome.’’

Wasted votesWhy did 1000 people waste their vote?

About 1000 people, myself included, voted

for Michael Feyen to be our elected repre-sentative on the Foxton Community Board.

About 1000 people, myself included, votedfor Michael Feyen to be our elected repre-sentative for the Kere Kere Ward.

Mr Feyen received enough votes to beeligible for both positions as number two forthe Kere Kere Ward and the communityboard.

I learn Mr Feyen can not hold bothpositions. Why not?

He did not withdraw, as is suggested bythe progress results in the Chronicle onOctober 16. He was told, after the election, hehad to withdraw, despite 1000 people votingfor him.

I hope those who wasted their votes willnot decide to miss the next Local Govern-ment elections.

Why did I vote if it does not count for

anything?Nowhere, that I can find, does any of the

electoral information state a person can nothold both positions.

Had I known Mr Feyen would not be ableto hold both posts, I would have decidedwhich post I thought would be most useful tothe community of Foxton (councillor orcommunity board).

I would have voted for that option andused my other vote to nominate someoneelse for the other position.

So 1000 voters who bothered to vote neednot have done so, as their vote did not meananything.

So much for ‘Get out and vote for yourlocal community’.

Project to help elderly triumphs

Horowhenua stole the spotlight at the2013 MidCentral District Health BoardHealth Awards on Saturday night.

The supreme award went to theImproving Health of Older People inHorowhenua project with two othercategory winners also coming from thedistrict.

The project took the top award and a$3000 prize after demonstratinginnovation by developing andimplementing an older person’s nursepractitioner for three aged residentialcare facilities in the Horowhenua — thefirst of its kind in New Zealand.

Evidence from the trial was extremelypositive, showing a significantimprovement in healthcare services andclient outcomes. This was reflected in thePalmerston North Hospital emergencydepartment with visits decreasing 28 percent after nurse practitionerintervention compared to a 21 per centincrease for facilities without a nursepractitioner role.

The project is so successful it is likelyto be replicated in other areas of theboard’s region.

The judges were impressed with thelevel of collaboration and integrationbetween aged residential care providers,general practice teams, Central PHO andspecialist services. They said the servicehad shown demonstrable benefits interms of patient wellbeing.

Another Horowhenua award winnerwas Levin’s Waiopehu College, whichtook out the Healthy Schools Award.

The college was recognised for itsapproach to a healthier school, aiming tocreate healthier students who are morewilling and able to learn. This has beenachieved with education opportunitiesthat include an on-site health facility,professional support, healthpresentations, breakfasts in school,student-run programmes,a schoolgarden and a teen parenting unit.

Judges were particularly impressedby the school’s commitment toimproving health and social outcomesfor the students.

‘‘Waiopehu College has formedexcellent relationships with healthproviders and community agencies, theysaid.

‘‘The college enjoys a high level ofsupport from the agencies whichrecognise the positive approach, theenthusiasm and the commitment to theirstudents.

‘‘The initiatives in place reflect theenthusiasm and can do attitude of staffwhich is then reflected in the schoolsculture.’’

Another district winner was Life tothe Max and Horowhenua DistrictCouncil, which took out the award forExcellence in IntersectoralCollaboration to Improve Health andSocial Outcomes Award.

They won the award after developinga community wellbeing executive groupand forum. These were efficiently run,meaning changes were seen in thecommunity.

Some of the group’s accomplishmentsinclude the establishment of a HealthWorkforce Trust which focuses on GP

attraction and retention, and improvedaccess to health service for young people.

Judges said the project demonstratedhow a community with good leadershipcould achieve excellent outcomes for aspecific population, in this case, youngpeople in Horowhenua.

The inevitable happened on Monday as86 staff at Silver Fern Farms Shannonfellmongery heard the news they hadbeen expecting, the plant had been soldand it would be mothballed.

The closure is a huge blow to thesmall township, where employment isscarce.

Silver Fern Farms chief operatingmanager Kevin Winders said it wasalways a sad thing to close a plant andwhile it was a positive from a businessperspective, and for the industry overall,it was understandably hard on people atthe plant who worked hard.

‘‘It’ll be tough on the localcommunity,’’ he said.

In a statement Silver Ferns chiefexecutive Keith Cooper said thecompany had entered into anunconditional agreement to sell its

Shannon fellmongery to Hastings-basedLowe Corporation.

The sale agreement would see theplant closed and Silver Fern Farms sendits North Island pelts to the LoweCorporation’s Hastings facilities forprocessing.

Mr Winders said while it was a hard

decision to deliver to staff, they had beentold about the sale offer in midSeptember when it was first made.

A sale decision was expected bySeptember 30 but the negotiationsbetween Silver Fern Farms and thecorporation continued longer thanexpected.

Support for the workers has beenestablished through a range of agencies,including Work and Income. He saidworkers from the plant would be placedon a priority list when seasonal workbecame available at one or more of itsother processing units.

Mr Cooper said they have beenlooking through a variety of options tocreate efficiencies in the industry.

‘‘With forecasted lower lambnumbers, we believe this consolidationof pelt processing through LoweCorporation’s modern facilities atTomoana will set us both up well for theseason.’’

Lowe Corporation managing directorAndy Lowe says the deal showsleadership around collaboration in thesector.

‘‘The gains we can make together outof this agreement should see a healthiersector in the long run.

‘‘We’re happy to be leading this withSilver Fern Farms,’’ he said.

Mr Lowe said the partnershipbetween the companies would bringefficiencies to the sector despite forecastlower lamb numbers.

‘‘Our Hastings facilities have thecapacity to increase production andincrease efficiencies. We’ll both benefitfrom this.’’

Mr Cooper said if they operatedShannon this coming season with the

lower lamb numbers the costs forrunning the plant would increasefurther.

‘‘We have been bringing in themajority of the pelts to Shannon fromour Takapau plant in the Hawke’s Bay,to process them and then transport themback to the Port of Napier. Whenoperating at low efficiencies thesetransport costs make the plantuncompetitive. This deal takes that costout of the equation.’’

SADDAY FORSMALL TOWNOtaki MP and Minister of PrimaryIndustries Nathan Guy said he was‘‘very disappointed to hear thatSilver Fern Farms’ Shannonfellmongery is to close.

‘‘Shannon is a small town and theloss of these jobs is a big blow.

‘‘I’m hopeful some of the workerswill be able to find work in thewider region.’’

Mr Guy said he had discussed theclosure with Social DevelopmentMinister Paula Bennett to ensurethat support was available to any

workers who might need it.‘‘In situations like this Work and

Income offers Redundancy SupportServices, which includes visitingthe affected workplace to offerinformation on how they can helpwith job search and recruitmentservices, as well as other support.

‘‘The economy is growing andbusiness confidence levels are athigh levels, in particularconstruction of the Kapitiexpressway is expected to createaround 1000 local jobs.’’

Rage video graphic lessonon angermanagement‘‘I don’t belong here,’’ was Greg’s firstthought when he attended an angermanagement programme run byHorowhenua Family Violence InterventionProgramme.

But that thought soon changed to ‘‘thatsounds like me’’ when he heard othergroup members discuss their experiences.

Getting help to those responsible forfamily violence is one of the best ways toreduce the harm the abuse causes.

Many don’t realise how violent they are,or the harm they are causing to theirpartners and children.

Greg knew he got angry but didn’t thinkit was a problem. He was a ‘clean cut’ guy,had a job and had never been in troublewith the police.

But when he got angry, he lost it, goinginto a rage and threatening his partner andtheir kids.

Couples often argue but when Greg andhis partner argued they would get in eachother’s face and knew how to push eachother’s buttons.

One day Greg picked her up and pushedher up against the wall, screaming at her.What he didn’t notice was their youngdaughter was on her lap and was caught inthe middle.

Greg’s partner eventually took out aprotection order and it was through this hewas sent to the anger managementprogramme.

During the course, Greg started torealise how his behaviour was affecting hiskids and he learned to recognise how tostop before he got into a rage.

He still gets angry but can take steps tokeep it under control.

The most important thing he got fromthe group was support and understanding.

The group of men becameclose and, along with the facilitators, are

able to act as a support network whenthings get difficult.

Being listened to and sharing tools andstrategies helped all the participants makechanges. It has also helped sustain thechanges.

During the course, Greg was videoedwhen he became angry. When he saw thevideo of himself in a rage, he didn’trecognise himself and only then realisedhow seriously he could have hurt someone.

When Greg showed the video to thegroup, a member suggested he had aproblem and needed to make changes.

The advice came from a member Gregconsidered an unlikely source of helpfulinformation but the man’s honesty andsupport made a connection that has createda friendship.

Greg’s violence was not what we thinkof when we think of family violence —things like punching and kicking — but itwas just as serious and cost him a lot,including a close connection with his kids.

Reaching out to someone you know isabusive to their family and supportingthem to get help could make a bigdifference in their lives and help end thecycle of violence.

School for some is not just aboutlearning to read and write, it isabout learning to interminglewith others, working as a part ofa team, being part of something.

That is the focus for specialneeds students at Levin School,developing a comfort zone thatallows them to join mainstreamschool programmes and get themaximum benefit.

School principal Colin Offordsaid ensuring the students hadthe chance to spend importanttime among the mainstreamstudent body and curriculumwas essential to their over-alleducation needs.

He said each of the specialneeds students is guided throughan individual education planspecifically designed for theirindividual needs andaspirations. Parents, specialistsand special needs teachers havemeaningful input into thedevelopment of a student’seducation programme.

The students had a learningregime that covers everythingfrom personal hygiene to normalschool criteria and much more.

Mr Offord said the importantthing for the school was that thechild’s parents were involvedwith the education planningprocess. Apart from a biannualIEP review, parents receive aconstant flow of progressinformation through acommunication book studentstake home.

For the teachers, the book is avital tool to get feedback from theentries by the parents.

Mr Offord said it was an

effective way of ensuring theindividual educationprogramme was achieving itsgoals.

Some students have theavailability of aphysiotherapist who, alongwith staff and parents,designs an exerciseprogramme to help themovercome mobilityrestrictions.

‘‘Our whole focus is to givethese kids all theopportunities we possibilitycan,’’ he said.

Mr Offord said because theMinistry of Education fundstransport to and from theschool, they can enrolstudents from Otaki to FoxtonBeach to Shannon.

The drop is on and local objectors tothe use of 1080 poison are again callingon the government to stop thepractice.

On Saturday, a helicopter startedthe pre-drop process with the mainpoison drop believed to be takingplace later this week, weatherpermitting.

Staunch objector to the aerial 1080drop, Rosemary Cleator said she hadnot seen any advertising relating tothe aerial operation.

‘‘It will happen but whether it isbefore or after Labour Weekend, whoknows.’’

Mrs Cleator said it was the wrongtime of year to be doing the poisondrop, as people would be starting tohead into the ranges for recreationalpurposes.

She said the aerial operation isbased at a property in Florida Rd.

‘‘You can’t get near the area wherethe helicopter is being loaded as it is

well off the road and they havesecurity guards there,’’ she said.

Anti-1080 campaigners areadamant that while the drop isintended to bring TB infectedpossums under control, other nativespecies and domestic livestock sufferthe consequences, with deadcarcasses and poison drift getting intowaterways.

Mrs Cleator said there was enoughinformation on 1080 poison availablefor people to read and urged people tojoin the anti-1080 movement and getthe practice stopped.

Italian Tommaso Lizzi and AustralianRose Lanman are among the thousandsof tourists who visit New Zealand toembrace the country’s beauty.

But they come with a message: ‘‘Thisis a beautiful country, don’t let thecorporate dollar turn it into awasteland,’’ Mr Lizzi said.

The pair stayed in Levin on Thursdaynight and were back on the road brightand early Friday, trekking into theranges again and the spectacular viewsfrom Te Araroa track.

Mr Lizzi said a lot of visitors like themfear coastal and seabed mining and opencast mining in general will have a huge

environmental impact on the countryand the coastal wild life that could neverbe repaired. To support New Zealandersopposed to what he calls the coastaldestruction, he became a member ofKiwis Against Seabed Mining.

In 2004, as the Labour Government’sForeshore and Seabed legislation firstcame into being, a wave of prospectingpermits were issued to severalcompanies hoping to exploit the ironsand reserves in the west coast seabed.

Raglan was the first to react, due to aunique relationship between iwi and thelocal community. Experienced oceanfolk, including surfers and fishers ,immediately recognised the threat to theentire west coast posed by the scale of

potential miningoperations.

They were stunnedat the lack of regulationor standardssurrounding theproposals and realisedit would be up to themto protect theirbackyard. KASM grewas a response to thatwave.

KASM is a vehicle tohelp coastal residentsto learn about anycurrent and futureproposals and toillustrate the deeppublic opposition tosuch operations.

Everyone looks forward to planning andgoing on holiday, whether it’s a trip to oneor more of the fantastic destinations inNew Zealand, or looking further afield.

For Rachel Marshall, who leavesUnited Travel at the end of the month, ithas been a 22-year career where she hasbeen able to enjoy the excitement ofplanning a perfect break with her clients.She is leaving the business in the capablehands of Pam Harding, whose enthusiasmfor holiday planning equals Rachel’s.

Since Rachel started in what wasLevin Holidaymakers in 1991, the changeshave been enormous. She said in theoffice they had two computers, noweveryone has one. Bookingsconfirmations were faxed, tickets werefilled out by hand — now it is allelectronic.

She most enjoys the personal contactand recalls when a major volcaniceruption in Iceland disrupted flightsthroughout Europe where she had 15clients stuck. She worked throughout thenight trying to arrange alternative travel.

‘‘When one couple arrived at Los

Angeles, they went to the flight counterand as they spoke to the attendant theirreservations came up on screen — greattiming.’’

Mrs Marshall said she would not beleaving the industry as such, but would beleaving the confines of an office and inbetween her own travel plans would actas a travel broker.

Pam Harding, who becomes the soleowner of United Travel franchise inLevin, says there are some exciting timesahead and her passion for the industry isimmense.

‘‘It is about building a relationship withpeople, she said.

‘‘While some people book their travelarrangement online, what they miss outon is the personal service they get from us.

‘‘If travel plans get disrupted, it is veryhard and at time costs to change flights. Ifyou work through us, with a quick phonecall we can work through the issue — inother words take the stress out of theequation.’’

Mrs Harding said they make planning aholiday fun and add to the excitement withtheir extensive knowledge andunderstanding.

Despite torrential overnight rain, theall-weather surface at Manfeild lived up toits name and footing was good during bothdays of competition.

Riders from throughout the countryfilled classes from unregistered to GrandPrix. Musical classes were indoors atManfeild’s huge stadium. Riders chased aqualifying score required for entry to theNew Zealand horse of the year show inMarch and also accumulator points fornational challenges.

Otaki rider Sarah Inglis rodeSummerstone Hit into second in the leveltwo musical freestyle and was third in the

national challenge event for that level. Thescores gave them the level two reservechampion title, narrowly beaten byGisborne’s Mandy MacPherson.

Kapiti young rider Louisa Ayres rodePlaymate for Levin owner Cindy Kent atLevel 4. The combination was third in themusical freestyle, gaining horse of the yearqualification, and sixth on a score of 62.5per cent in the national challenge for theirgrade.

Levin’s Frankie Webb rode NorthernIvanthus at level five. The musical freestyleresults were close with less than a per centseparating second to fourth. Webb’s 64.25per cent saw them slip into fourth behindAshhurst rider Penny Castle and FreeSpirit on 64.50. Castle went on to win thenational challenge riding BL About Timeahead of Webb and Northern Ivanthus.
