MAGICMOMENT: Pat Kennedys brief meetingwith NelsonMandela has had a profound effect on her life.
LVN181213pjfkennedyGREATMEMORY: Nearly twodecades on and Pat Kennedyremembers with fondnessshaking NelsonMandelashand.
IMMORTALWORDS
On 9 October 1963 NelsonMandela joined 10 otherson trial for sabotage inwhat became known asthe Rivonia Trial. Whilefacing the death penalty, his words to the court atthe end of his famousSpeech from the Dock onApril 20 1964 becameimmortalised:I have fought againstwhite domination, and Ihave fought against blackdomination. I havecherished the ideal of ademocratic and freesociety in which allpersons live together inharmony and with equalopportunities. It is an idealwhich I hope to live for andto achieve. But if needs be,it is an ideal for which I amprepared to die.

A sadness fell on the world asthe news spread that thefather of the new SouthAfrica, Nelson Mandela haddied after months of illness.
Levin woman Pat Kennedytreasures the memories ofmeeting Mandela, shaking hishand and feeling the warmthand gentle spirit of the manwho had changed a nation. MsKennedy said it is somethingshe will never forget.
She said when she heardthe news he was dead she didnot shed a tear, but thought itwas his time to go, it was histime to rest. He had achievedso much in his life timefighting for all South Africansto be treated equally.
Ms Kennedy was a govern-ment chauffeur in 1995, driv-ing cabinet ministers, judgesand VIPs, in the 11 years shewas in the service it was MrMandela who made thebiggest impression on her.
It was only a brief meet-ing, I drove the car, he did notsay very much, he wasextremely polite.
Ms Kennedy said shewatched his funeral well intothe night, during which shethought of the short time shespent with him driving him toGovernment House.
She said as they drovethrough Wellington peoplewere waiting in the street toget a glimpse of him. It was
incredible, some were cryingas the motorcade drove by. Ihad never experienced thatbefore, even during theQueens visit. she said.
Ms Kennedy said the drivebecame an emotional experi-ence. Even I got a littlechoked up, she said.
When they reached Gov-ernment House Mr Mandela
went with the other dignitar-ies but later asked to meet thedrivers. She said there werethree on that assignment Iwas his driver and I felt reallyprivileged to meet him andshake his hand.
He was a great man, andyou felt that greatness whenyou were close to him. I willnever forget that moment.

Public servicesalariesA recently published report from theState Services Commission indicatedthat senior public servants were notbeing paid enough based on perform-ance despite the majority of thesenior public servants being paidover $500,000 per annum.
Currently there are around 25senior staffers earning more than$500,000 with performance-based sal-ary increases of around 3.1 per cent. The top earners include the NZ SuperFund chief executive earningbetween $660,000 and $669,000, theAuckland University chief executiveearning between $650,000 and$659,999, the NZ Transport Agencychief executive earning between$610,000 and $619,000 and the StateServices Commissions chief execu-tive earning $560,000 following areported pay increase of $40,000!
It would appear that the StateServices Commission recognised theneed to attract and retain highlyqualified, capable leaders and inorder to compete with the privatesector, the salaries and performance-based bonus payments had to berealistic.
To put the salary and bonuspayments in perspective, the PrimeMinisters current salary is around$429,000 while Cabinet Ministers sal-aries have been increased to $268,500on the basis of the recently approved2.2 per cent salary increase backdatedto July 2013.
While it is generally recognisedwithin the New Zealand industrialand commercial sectors that NewZealand politicians are considered tobe well paid, it is evident that the NZPublic Service also pays very well, particularly the senior public ser-vants, who do not have to face theNew Zealand-wide electorate everythree years.
With taxpayer-funded salaries andjob security, based on individualemployment contracts, all senior pub-lic servants have every incentive toserve their respective Cabinet Minis-ter to the best of their ability as wellas their particular GovernmentAgency.

Horse mess onMako Mako RdI am writing concerning the horse pooalong Mako Mako Road, Levin.
My husband and I were travellingalong the road today (December 4). Itis a disgusting mess and surely thehorse owners should be made to clearit up, I went to the council andcomplained but was told there was noby law to make horse owners respon-sible for their mess.
Dog owners are required to scoopthe poops and clean their mess as arefarmers if a cow messes on the road.
I find this ludicrous.Surely the law must apply to all to
clean the road and make it safe fordrivers and pedestrians.
I understand there has been somecomments made before in your paperabout this situation.
Surely it is time something wasdone about it.

Equipment, memories lostin childcare centre burglaryBy PETER FRANKLIN
Images of young children arestored on a camera, laptopand tablet stolen from anearly childhood centre hasdevastated staff.
At about midnight onWednesday December 11,neighbours to the ReeveStreet Early Childcare Centreheard the alarm sound, butsaw no-one in the area of the
centre to raise any sus-picions.
However, staff later foundthat the building had beenbroken into and the officesearched for the keys to openthe cupboard where the stolenequipment was stored.
The burglar had used oneof the centres shovels left inthe garden to break into awindow, in the process dam-aging newly-installed joinery.
Spokeswoman GemmaMcKay said her main concernwas that on the camera, laptop and tablet were photosof the children and activitiesthey had taken part in whileat the centre.
I dont know what theywill do with them (the photos),but they are very important tous and the children, she said.
The centre would be grate-ful to get them back, whether
the camera, laptop or tablet arehanded into police or left some-where were they can be foundanonymously.
This is the second time inthe past 18 months the centrehas been burgled. Mrs McKaysaid she could not understandwhy an early childhood centrewould be targeted. The culpritsare stealing from children, it istheirmemories captured in theimages.
BLUE BEAT
Proud to bepart of paradewith GRAEME JARVISCommunity Constable
Iwas again proud to be part of theLevinChristmasParade this year, whichthankfullywas permitted to travel oncemore downOxford Street.
Whilemyfirst experienceof leading theparade last yearwas great, thereis nothing tomatch theatmosphere ofbeing in themain street andI think the greatcrowd thatturned out boretestament tothis. Despite awetmorning, a large andenthusiastic crowd turned out.Well doneto the organisers, the teamof volunteers, those that prepared andmanned the floatsand the all-important traffic control thatsafely controlled not only the paraderoute but diverted SH1 traffic on to theCambridge Street bypass.
On the crime front, there are positivesigns emerging in some of our crime-related areas. Thefts fromcars aretrending downafter taking a batteringjust a fewweeks ago. Stolen cars, shoplifting and graffiti are all remainingat lownumbers. While the signs areencouraging, please continue to take allthe necessary precautions aroundvehiclecrime.Always lock your carwith thewindowsup, and donot leave valuables insight. Ideally, remove themaltogether orlock them in the boot. Iwould like tothink that this is because of thework bylocal police but, the reality is, theseresults are probably a combination offactorsworking together to reduce crime.
Burglaries are still a concern and arerunning at a consistent level. Once again Iencourage everyone to lock all doors andwindows, including garages and sheds.Gifts under theChristmas tree could be ahuge temptation to somepeople, so byremoving the opportunities to easilyenter your home, youmightwell preventa burglary.
It is also very apparent that shoppersare out in force. TheMall, TheWarehouse, TeTakere and supermarketsall appear to be particularly busy attimes. Please be very conscious of leavingvaluables such as phones and purses onpush chairs, trolleys ormobility scooterswith somanypeople about. Once again, removing temptationmaywell save theheartache caused by an opportunist theft.
I reported fewweeks ago of a policeoperation based around controlledintersections, and the blatant disregardby somemotorists in the town to stop atstop signs.
I happened to be cooling off in theshade of a tree in theMall carpark lastweek andhad a plain viewof the stop signon the corner of Bath andSalisburyStreets. Thenumber of drivers failing tostop at this intersection in a short periodof timewas appalling. Iwould say five outof every 10 cars failed to stop, and in someinstances, barely slowedwhile passingthrough the intersection. There is noexcuse, stopmeans STOP, notmerelylooking to the left or right or slowingslightly. While I take no great pleasurefromwriting traffic tickets, Iwill nothesitate to stop drivers and ticket themfor this very blatant and potentiallydangerous act.
Thiswill be the last report for the yearso, until next year, take care.

Helping to put fun andpersonalised learning intochildcare are six neweducators who have joined theLevin team at About Kids In-homeChildcare group, whichcaters for children aged frombirth to five years.
Bringing the total numberof educators to 10, StevieBrown, one of the Kapiti-Horowhenua co-ordinatorsand a qualified teacher, said itwas great to be able to expandthis type of in-home childcareservice.
Its a nice alternative toplaygroups and kindergartensand, because its a smallerenvironment, there is thatgreater level of personalised,one-to-one care for children inthe educators home.
She said educators wereprovidedwith amonthlylearning-based plan ofdifferent activities centeredaround the childrensinterests. No formal teachingbackground is required, although educators areencouraged to gain a Level 4certificate in family daycare.
About Kids has only beenrunning for about seven yearsbut some of our educators havebeen in childcare roles formore than 20 years, saidMsBrown.
New recruit SandraWrightis just such an educatorwithplenty of child care experienceup her sleeve.
Iveworkedwith childrenformore than 21 years in home-based family daycare, and Ilove seeing young childrengrow, learn and be happy. Ireally enjoy the home-basedside of it butwere also out andabout in the community quite a
lotwith the children, going toparks, the swimming pool, artandmusic groups and otherplaygroups, so it certainly
keeps you on the go.AboutKids In-Home

Much to be positive aboutwith NATHANGUYOtaki MP
This is my last column for 2013and a chance to thank everyonefor their support and feedbackduring the year.
Its been another busy yearas your local MP, and as theMinister for Primary Industriesin John Keys Government.
A highlight of the year hasbeen the start of constructionon the Kapiti expressway, nearly four years after the planwas first announced.
Since then it has beenthrough a very rigorous processallowing the project to beconsidered in detail and foreveryone to have their say.
Most locals are thrilled tohave work underway on thenew route, giving us a secondbridge over theWaikanae river
and amajor boost to the localeconomy. Around 1000 workersare expected to be involved on
the project.Construction will start next
year on Transmission Gully, and consultation is underwayonmajor roading upgradesfromOtaki to Levin.
Kapiti Airport continues tobe a success with direct flightsto and from Christchurchbeginning this year.
Im pleased to see a new after-hours GP service beginning inLevin, providing a one-stopshop for local patients, alongwith a newmedical centre beingbuilt in Foxton. Im also glad tosee the old Horowhenuahospital and Kimberley centrefinally released for sale.
Crime stats are down, and wenow have the largest number ofpolice in Levin, ever.
We have new councillors inboth districts, with BrendanDuffy re-elected as mayor in
Horowhenua and Ross Churchthe newmayor of Kapiti.
As theMinister for PrimaryIndustries its been a full-onyear with a range of big issuesto deal with, including thedrought earlier this year whichhad amajor impact on ruralcommunities. Ive worked hardto improve our biosecuritysystem, invest in research anddevelopment, and open newtrade doors for our exporters.
Over the Christmas breakIm planning to visit the beachatWaitarere and do a bit ofcamping withmy family beforecracking into a busy electionyear. Its a privilege torepresent the Otaki electorateand 2014 will be another bigyear.
Stay safe on the roads andhave a great holiday. All thebest for 2014.

It is fantastic to see the youth spacehummingwith activity.
The ping pong tables, foosball anddigital games are always in hot demand.
We are happy to see all members of thecommunity using the space during the dayand during term time. However, it is nowthe time of yearwhen young people are outof school and looking to own their space, sowewould just like to remind everyone thatthe youth space is for 13-24-year-olds. Thefacilities are geared up for this age group.
If you are looking for something to dofor the under 13s, we still have spaces inthe summer reading programme. And ifyou are one of those over 24-year-olds,there are plenty of computers scatteredaround themain Te Takere space for youto use. Theremay even be a ping pongtable set up in themain space for adults touse.
Wewould also like to take thisopportunity to remind parents andcaregivers that TeHorowhenua Trust doeshave a policy of not allowing childrenunder the age of eight years to be leftunaccompanied in their libraries at Levin,Shannon and Foxton. This is for their ownsafety, particularly in Te Takerewhere itis such a huge space to try and keep an eyeon children. We cannot be responsible forchildren left alone and ask that parentsrespect this policy
Tomake sure everyone gets a chance onthe computers during the busy period, wewill be reducing the session times down toone hour for the school holidays. Asalways, if you require longer, just ask atthe service desk.
As this is our last column for 2013, we
would like to take the opportunity towisheveryone aMerry Christmas and a safeandHappyNewYear.

Author tells how she broughtlovable Hairy Maclary to life
REAL TREAT: Lynley Dodd reads HairyMaclary to a group of children on theSky Tower sky deck.
By LINDAHALL
The Life and Art of Lynley Doddby Finlay MacdonaldPenguin, $50
LYNLEYDODD, author of thefamousHairyMaclary books saysits a strange but terrific feelinghaving a bookwritten about her
because she is so used to hiding behindHairy.
The Life and Art of Lynley Dodd, byFinlayMacdonald, helps celebrate 30years of Hairys adventures and givesreaders an insight into the special personwho invented him.
Hairys life began after he fell out of abook. Dodd kept an ideas book and haddrawn a sketch of a scruffy little dog. Oneday the sketch fell out andwhen Doddpicked it up she thought, well, yes, Icould do this. So I did.
Since then,HairyMaclary books havebeen read bymillions of peoplethroughout the world.
The antics of the little dog and hisfriends told in rhythm and rhyme appealto not only little ones but also to adultswho love reading the books out loud.
Children like the singability aboutrhythm and rhyme, Dodd says. Its sonatural to them.
Dodd says there is muchmore workwriting a book inrhythm and rhyme thanprose.
It must sound natural, spontaneous and easy, but itsnot natural, spontaneous andeasy to write.
I can do anything from 20to 25 drafts before Im happy.
Dodd says she has heaps ofideas for other books in herideas book but Hairy keepsme so busy, I dont get a chance to takethem further at themoment.
She says the best thing about being afamous author is the feedback fromreaders.
Feedback from parents and childrenis wonderful.Without it I would feel like Iwas writing into a black void.
I get loads of emails and try to replyto them but sometimes there is a delugeof correspondence and I end upwith abig backlog.
Funnily enough, the first book Doddremembers readingwas about a littledog. Then along cameDr Seuss, whotook such liberties with language.
While Dodd is busywithevents celebrating 30 years ofHairyMaclary books therearemore to come when I geta chance.
The Life and Art of LynleyDodd tells the story of how ayoung girl raised in theKaingaroa pine forest, whereher father was a forester, came to be the creator ofbooks read bymillions.
Macdonald exploresDodds working world so readers willunderstand just what it takes tomake ascruffy little dog so appealing.
The book includes never-before-seensketches and cartoons, character roughsand picturebook drafts.
It is beautifully presented and onefans of HairyMaclary will treasure .

MARKETMATTERS: Friends Bev Hamilton and HeatherWright organise one of themost successful markets in the region andwant to the thank not just thosewho visitthemarket, but the local businesses that help with promotion. PICTURE: FRANKIEWEBB
By FRANKIEWEBB
When friends Bev Hamilton and HeatherWright started Ohaumarket in February2011, other markets around the districtwere struggling.
We had both operated stalls at othermarkets and through we could do this forour own area, Heather said.
She didnt dream it would be sosuccessful she has no stall of her own,she is so busy organising everyoneelses.
Stalls include a community bring andbuy table, sausage rolls which peopletravel fromWellington to buy and dollshand-dressed in a variety of beautiful
period costume selling for under $20.Themarket has changed with the
times.Originally we had lots of jewellery
and that kind of thing, but we noticedpeople weremore interested in buyingother things, so wemade sure our stallsmet themarket.
Theres a waiting list for stalls. Manystallholders like Shirley Hick havesupported the Ohaumarket since dayone.
Much of the success of OhauMarketmust be credited to businesses inHorowhenua who have supported theevent. We havent had one retailer intown turn us downwhenwe ask to put a
flyer on their window or in their shop,Bev said.
Land owners have also been kind. Ourbig signs, both to the north and south ofOhau, are there due to the generosity ofthose people who own the properties
theyre installed at, Heather said.Thank youHorowhenua for yourongoing support.
The lastmarket for 2013 is on Saturdaybefore it restarts on January 18. It is heldon the third Saturday of eachmonth.

Oh, little town of Bethlehem!with Michael Dally and Pearl Forster
At this time of year, Christian thoughtsturn to the town of Bethlehem, thebirthplace of Jesus Christ. The familiaricons re-emerge in shopwindows, storedisplays and school nativity plays thestable, themanger,Mary and Joseph, thethreewisemen, and the Star of Royalbeauty-bright. Themusic is also familiar, and formost, even thosewith few religiousaffiliations, the nostalgia of everyChristmas past permeates the atmosphere.
In themidst of all the festivities, though, hangs the question, what domost of usreally know about the town of Bethlehem? Its history highlights this ancient place astrulymultilateral; even its name derivesfrom different sources, both focused onfood. Bet Lamwas theArabic name, whichtranslates as, TheHouse ofMeat (it was amarket town) and theHebrewnamewasBet Leem, meaning TheHouse of Bread. Asfar back as 1400BCBethlehemwas recordedas being a Canaanite city andwhile it hasstrong Christian ties, it is in fact today a
Palestinian city of about 25,000 people.Administered by amostlyMuslimCouncil,it is the capital of the BethlehemGovernorate of PalestinianAuthoritywitha roughly 60:40Muslim:Christianmix plusseveral thousand refugees. The Council isdominated byHamas, and has a femalemayor (the towns first). She is FatahmemberVera Baboun, a Christian, and shewas elected inOctober last year. Vera is amother of five children, has amastersdegree inAfrican-American literature, andlectures at BethlehemUniversity. Verawonthe election on a platform of creating jobsfor young people, many of whom leave thecity to look forwork elsewhere. Fought overbymany forces frommany faiths downthrough the centuries, Bethlehemwasfinally set up in 1995 as the headquarters forthe PalestinianNational Authority.
As onewould expect, tourism is themainindustry.More than twomillion peoplevisit each year and the peak season is aboutnow.More than 30 hotels fill with Christiansightseers and pilgrims, most of themkeento see and photograph the Church of theNativitywhich houses the site wheremanybelieve the Christ Childwas actually born.Next door is the cavewhere the originalversion of theHoly Bible, the Vulgate waswritten. However, Jewish people are alsoattracted to one of their holy sites in thecity, Rachels Tomb. Tourists love to collectsouvenirs andmementos and the industrykeeps over 300 handicraft shops very busyat this time of year. For a reallymeaningfulgift, however, thewomen of Bethlehemhave been renowned since ancient times forthe exquisite bridal silks and other fabricstheyweavewith silver, and even gold, shotthrough thematerial.
As for the climate, if you are thinking ofvisiting Bethlehem at Christmas time, takean overcoat. Perhaps a scarf and gloves, too, because it can be quite chilly (as low as 5C),it will probably rain, and it has even beenknown to snow inDecember.

The carnival atmosphere continuedduring the afternoon at Te Maire Parkwith entertainment from the SaltonTaekwon-do Academy and the Shannon/Levin Teezhareem Bellydancers, Tip andhis Band, as well as the many craft andfood stalls to browse.
BIG LOSS FORSHANNONThe Shannon community and paradecommitteememberswere shocked bythe sudden passing of Bernie Lynn twodays before the parade.
CommitteememberNoeline Shawsaid Bernie (or Bernie Bear as shewasknown tomany people) was a goodfriendwho co-ordinated the bookingand setting up of stalls each year andwas their number one raffle ticketseller.
Berniewould arrive at TeMairePark at 6am and direct stallholders totheir sites. When that was all set forthe day shewalked among the crowds
selling raffle tickets andwas alwaysthere for the cleanup afterwards. Shewas a stalwart of our carnivalcommittee and amuch-lovedpersonality in our community.
Our small group hasworkedclosely together for the last 13 years toput on this event for our community, andwith sun shining down on us, wefelt Berniewas looking down andhappy that the paradewent ahead forthe children.
We all felt Shannon really neededthis event to go on after the recentbusiness closures in town.

Pumped up Pumas subdue Young Guns
LVN181213speedway2
FINAL INSTRUCTIONS: Palmerston North Pumas captain AlecWilson getting some last-minute advise before the team took on theWellington YoungGuns.
By PETER FRANKLIN
LVN181213speedway1
WRECK: Jamie Larson and hiscrew inspect his wrecked
sprintcar, after heavy collisionwith the wall.
Fans packed into RobertsonHolden International speedwayon Saturday towatch the Pumasstockcar team in action for thefirst time this season.
Up against theWellingtonYoungGuns, it looked like thePumaswould have their workcut out. With theNewZealandStockcar TeamsChamps only afewweeks away, the teams raceoffered both sides some valuablepractice.
The YoungGuns arrivedwitha full-strength contingent, bolstered byDale Robertsonreturning to the fold in a new carand Brendon Tye behind thewheel of his father Rons newtank, 99P.
The Pumaswerewithout 1NZPeter Rees, whowas away racingin Stratford, which gave fringemembers a chance to impress.
The Pumas exploded from thestartline and quickly tookcontrol of the race, the twonewbies 36p JayKnight and 38pDarrelWallace taking up therunning once 54wDaleRobertson had been blocked outof second place.Wellingtonschanceswere not helped by aking hit in amelee from 55wPaulGaskin on the stationary 99wBrendon Tye, which eventuallydisabled himself and damagedhis teammate.
Assisted by 34pGavinTaniwhas blocking for Pumas, the YoungGunswere only able toineffectually slow one at a timeand thewhitewashwas quicklyover.
The finishing orderwas: 37pJayKnight, 36p Josh Prentice,34p Gavin Taniwha, 54wDale
Robertson, 35pAlecWilson and51w ScottMcIntosh.
With the celebrations over forthe stockcar boys, it was time toget into some high speed actionwith the sprintcars. However, with theAmerican drivers notavailable, all eyeswere on thetwo young hotshots, KapitisJamie Larson andWellingtonsSteven Taylor.
However, a spectacular crashin turn one of the first race saw ahard-charging Larsonmake anoutsidemove. However, he rodeover thewheel of 4p Bryan
Menefy and flipped violently onto the concrete fence. The crashdestroyed the chassis of Larsonscar, putting him out for thenight. Hewas not hurt.
With Larson out, therewas noonewho couldmatch the high-flying Taylor in the 21W car, whowon both heat races and thefeature.

First impressions count so when acustomer walks into your premisesthey want and expect clean brightsurroundings right!
