Dunes dumpingRef article “Dunes disgrace”,December 5. Fly tipping is aresult of the unreasonablecharges required for loads ofrubbish to be dumped at ourtransfer stations.

It’s up to Horowhenua Dis-trict Council to review the SolidWaste Rate, make it sufficient tocover all the costs and hence nocharges to use the transferstations. It must surely becheaper to do that than have topay for constant ad hoccleanups district-wide. I can’tsee how all of that broken glassat Foxton Beach will be recov-ered.

No-one in their right mindwould encourage children torecreate on that beach now letalone exercise a dog or horse onit. Another problem in thisdistrict is that there are noE-Waste (computers etc.) collec-tion depots and much of thatwaste is ending up in ditchesand out of the way areas.

SmokingRe: Smoking and the Commun-ity. There appears to be agrowing awareness within thelocal community with regard tosmoking and the message of notstarting smoking beinghighlighted at school level, par-ticularly the Intermediate andSecondary sectors. Any healthawareness programme thatresults in younger members ofthe local community notstarting smoking, must be ofconsiderable value to their per-sonal health through notstarting a life long habit.

It is currently estimated thatthe purchase of a packet ofcigarettes per week costsapproximately $1000 per year, while a packet a day costsaround $7000 per year, quite anexpense for a young person on alimited income. While thehealth risk associated withsmoking is fairly well knownwithin the community, it is alsoevident that cigarette butts, thrown on footpaths, in kerbing, channellings, in car park areas,

sports grounds and generally, have an environmental impactwith the butts ending up in thestormwater drains as well asbeing a health hazard to localcontractors tasked withcleaning up footpaths, kerbingand channelling, car parks andsports grounds.

Currently the Irish Republicare planning to become the first

member of the European Unionto introduce plain packaging onall cigarette packs with the viewto becoming a smokefreecountry by 2025. It would appearthat Australia and New Zealandcurrently lead the way in mod-ern, practical non-smokinglegislation.

Lots of learning inlanguage lessons

By FRANKIEWEBB

Anne Watson and Jiankuan Caohave a very special relationship.

Anne gives her timevoluntarily to help immigrantslearn to speak English, to helpthem assimilate into the NewZealand way of life. She is a tutorwith the not-for-profitorganisation English LanguagePartners.

“I saw an ad in the Chroniclelooking for tutors, I thought Iwould like to do it but with noteaching experience didn’t think Icould,” Anne said.

“A few days later I was walkingpast the Post Office and I saw theELP sign and thought I would findout more about it.”

That was five years ago. Sincethen Jiankuan is one of a numberof immigrants who have beentutored in English by Anne.

“I love people, I learn from the

people who learn from me,” Annesaid.

“I learn about their culture, theway of life in other countries.”

Students helped by Anne havebeen from Chile, Columbia,Cambodia and like Jiankuan, from China.

“They all tell me Kiwi’s speaktoo quickly,” Anne said, Jiankuannods in agreement. Her sixmonths learning with Anne hasgiven her a good grasp ofunderstanding and speakingEnglish, although she lacks alittle confidence. English is athird language for Jiankuan whois fluent in Mandarin andCantonese.

“My children speak English, two were born here,” Jiankuansaid. “They find it hard to helpme. I started having Englishlessons when I first came to NewZealand in 2000 but couldn’t goregularly.”

She explains many Chinesewho come to Horowhenua work inmarket gardening and don’t haveto develop English language as itisn’t a job that involves talking alot to others.

“It is different in China. Wehave 10 acres, it is considered abig (market) garden and wouldhave a hundred people workingon it, planting and gardening, here you only have a few peoplefarming hundreds of acres.”

Over time Jiankuan found notbeing able to speak English veryfrustrating and handicapping. She decided to make time toattend regular lessons.

“Anne is very kind,” Jiankuansaid. “She teaches me every weekand I am learning.”

Community garden robbed

COMMUNITYGARDEN

The Garden of Eden, He TupuNgatahi, in MakoMako Road, isan initiative of the Department ofCorrections Levin CommunityProbation Service and Levin’s StMary’s Anglican Church. It wasestablished almost two years agoas a way for low-risk offenders tocomplete their community workand gain an NZQA qualification inhorticulture. The garden is alsoopen to members of the publicwho volunteer their time andlabour. All produce grown issupplied to churches and foodbanks in the local area.

By FRANKIEWEBB

All is not good in the Garden ofEden. The Garden is tended bylow-risk offenders as theircommunity work.

In return they gain a NZQAqualification in Horticulture.Produce grown is then spreadamongst local churches andfoodbanks. Communitygenerosity has enabled theproject to flourish with thedonation of seedlings, compost, fencing, labour and materials.

Last week a generator andpetrol was taken from thegarden following a break-in toone of the sheds on the site.

“There is a huge amount ofcommunity goodwill that’s beenput into here,” mentor andcommunity member DavidBrewerton said.

“It was hugely disappointingto discover we had beenburgled. We have a lockedshipping container we use asour shed, the lock had beencut.”

He is hopeful that maybe thegenerator will be returned.

“Some time ago we had toolsslowly disappearing,” Davidsaid. “It was sad because wehave so many locals who arebehind this, making it work forthe people who come. After anarticle in the paper explaininghow much this place meant tothe people who use it, andeveryone who has had input, allthe missing tools turned up atthe Corrections office.”

The question had to be asked, could someone who hadbenefited from the programme,be involved in the burglary?

“I’d like to think it isn’tsomeone who has been here,”

David said. “I have pretty goodrelations with those people, Ireally don’t think someone whohas been here and who knowswhat we do, would do this.”

He isn’t desperate to knowwho was responsible, but hewould very much like thegenerator returned.

“It can be left at Corrections,at the church, at the Policestation,” he said.

“We would be happy just tohave it back, no questionsasked.”

Folk Club finale for yearLAURA Collins and the Back Porch Band are back at the Levin Folk Club this Friday.

Friday sees Levin Folk Club’s final offeringfor the year, and it should be a real doozie.

If you were lucky enough to see LauraCollins and the Back Porch Band whenthey last visited, you’ll know to expect aprofessional lineup and a feast of music.

As well as original material, the guestsinclude covers of many artists, from BBKing to Alison Krauss, Lyall Lovett toMuddy Waters, and Koko Taylor aka “TheQueen of the Blues” — to name a few.

Collins has been a singer songwriter forover 20 years but views herself primarily asan entertainer. Her musical journey hasseen her perform folk, rock, blues and alt-country but after a pilgrimage to the DeepSouth of the United States a decade ago, shehas found her heart in what she calls ‘blues‘n’ twang’. It seems to have been worth it.Dave Burgess, reviewing her last album‘Cast a Line’ in The Wellingtonian, gave itfive stars and described it as “absolutelyperfect”.

She has been working with her acousticlineup, The Back Porch Band, for five yearsnow. They really have the skills to deliver. You can hear a number of their tracks atwww.lauracollins.co.nz

The stellar lineup includes MattNewman, originally from Portland,Oregon, who brings a wealth of experience

and great country-blues pickin’ on guitar.Al Norman (ex-Warratahs, now workingwith Darren Watson and the Real DealBlues Band) adds a zesty zydeko accordionand percussion. Alongside is the ever-cheerful Paddy Burgin on lap steel andmandolin while the seasoned GeorgeBarris keeps everything in time on uprightbass.

Give yourself an early Christmaspresent and come and see them, 7.30pm thisFriday in the Scottish Society Hall onBartholomew Road.

Those who wish can sign up for a one-song spot in the first half’s blackboardconcert when the performers’ list opens at7pm. Members $5, non-members $8,children $3.

As it’s the final concert for the year, people are invited to bring a plate of fingerfood to add to the club’s Christmas suppertable and help celebrate another successfulyear of bringing live music to Levin.

Levin Christmas Parade

SANTA and his helpers wave to the crowd.

PRETTY in pink, two youngladies add a bit of style to theproceedings.

THE Ukuladies sing up a storm at the Christmas Market outside Te Takere.BROLLIES become a necessary part of the BounceOut of School Care float decorations.

PLENTY of clucking going on in the Bennicks PoultryFarm float.

THE Tongan Youth float brings a touch ofPasifika to the parade.

The show must go on and a littlerain wasn’t about to put off theLevin crowds determined toenjoy this year’s parade.

Far from sheltering undershop verandas, much of theestimated 1000-strong crowd wasout on the main highway to get agood view of the floats, vintagecars, tractors, fire engines andcommunity groups who made upfor the gloomy weather withplenty of colour and festive spirit.

However, it was Santa Clauson his reindeer sleigh, completewith brolly to keep the rain off hisbeard, that all the children hadcome to see and they let himknow it, with plenty of cheeringand waving.

The parade of more than 65vehicles and more than 18 streetgroups, started promptly at 1pm,leaving Durham Street andwithin 25 minutes had made itsway along Oxford Street down tothe Stanley Street corner. Theroute was kept 700 metres shorterthan last year to keep the paradefrom spreading out.

For the first year the paradewas not led by a brass band, dueto the wet weather. Paradeorganiser spokesperson, CathrynPollock, Horowhenua DistrictCouncil community projectsofficer, said it was disappointingand, instead, they put the loudestfloat behind the police car.

“The call was made by theband at the very last minute, theywere all ready and waiting butcouldn’t risk their instruments inthe rain.”

Ms Pollock said it was a toughdecision to go ahead with theparade. The call had to be made at8.30am for communications to goout, and by 10.30am floats werearriving to set up. “By the time itstarted spitting, all but a couple offloats and groups had turned upand I couldn’t turn back.”

She said all the participantswere in good spirits and ready togo.

“We weren’t going to let a littlerain dampen the occasion. It wasgreat to see Oxford Street prettywell packed and the proof of thepudding was in seeing the kids’faces and the cheers when theysaw Santa. It was all worth it.”

The Christmas Market Dayheld at Te Takere added extrafestive fare with stalls andchildren’s entertainmentthroughout the day.

Best floats for 2014 judged onthe day were SWAZI, Kate MartinSchool of Dance and MedievalMarket.

Forcingyou to part with your pet at the sametime can be heart breaking.Yet, often this is the reality for resthome residents. But not at Enliven’sEden Alternative homes such as LevinHome for War Veterans or ReevedonHome in Levin.Enliven believes continuing contactwith animals is integral to the wellbeingof older people.“For many people pets are part of theirfamily and they have an incrediblystrong bond with them. We don’twant our residents to go through theheart break of losing their pet whenthey don’t have to,” explains JoannaThomson, manager of both LevinHome and Reevedon Home. She says every day staff see theincredible influence animals have onpeople, with pets playing a role inensuring residents have meaningfulactivity and purpose in their lives.“It’s different for everyone, but oftenhaving a pet to look after gives people

a positive focus. Wellbeing means notonly receiving care, but giving caretoo,” explains Joanna.“For some residents continuing tocare for animals is a meaningfulactivity that can encourage them tokeep active - such as taking the dogfor a walk or collecting the eggs fromthe hens.”Most of the animal residents at EnlivenHomes are cats and birds, althoughthere is also the occasional dog thatmoves in with its owner.“Obviously we take each situationon a case-by-case basis. We needto make sure that the pet is going toget on with other people and animalsthat also live at the home.”And it’s not just Enliven’s homes thatwelcome animals. Pets are alsowelcome at Enliven’s ReevedonRetirement Village in Levin. Dance school celebrates 25 years

MOTHER and daughter team. Inger Perkins, left in white, anddaughter Catherine Croad, far right, who operate the Catherine IngerSchool of Dance, celebrate 25 years of dance in Horowhenua.

By TANYAWOOD

Catherine Croad has no idea howmany students she has in herdance school.

What the owner of theCatherine Inger School of Dancedoes know is that she hasstudents with talent and apassion for dance.

“People always ask me howmany kids I have in the schoolbut I don’t measure the businesson numbers, I measure it by thekids who come and love to dance.I don’t obsess with counting, youlose focus on why you are doingthe job.”

The Levin dance school iscelebrating 25 years of ballet, tapand theatre craft (musicals) thisyear, and it’s a family affair —mum Inger Perkins, the otherhalf of Catherine Inger, dadEddie Perkins, a talented scenicpainter who has designed andproduced many of the show’ssets, daughter Alina, 13, whodances and helps out withteaching when needed, and sonSamuel, 11, who enjoys thetechnical side, operating thelights and music.

“He’s granddad’s right handman,” said Catherine. “Thewhole school really is like a big

family, kids tend to come in asgroups of friends and all theparents are very supportive.”

Both mother and daughterwere born and bred on the Isle ofMan (UK). While Inger had tostudy dance as a hobby (herparents didn’t consider it aproper job), by contrastCatherine and brother Martinwere virtually brought up in atheatre.

“Mum and dad were heavilyinvolved in local operatics, sodance and theatre was part of ourlife, I couldn’t imagine doinganything else,” said Catherine.“It’s something I will always do,it’s part of my lifestyle.”

Inger and her husband movedto New Zealand in 1988, settingup her first dance school in Otakia year later. A back injury twoyears later, saw Catherine, then19 and still in the UK completingher dance and teacher’s exams, fly out to help. She met ‘the boynext door’ and stayed, sharingthe dance load when Inger tookon a small established danceschool in Levin, in 1995.

From 50 pupils, the Levinschool number pirouetted to 150by the second term. The move tonew premises in Bruce Road in1997, to accommodate the

burgeoning number of dancers, saw the official Catherine IngerSchool of Dance sign go up.

“It was appropriate that it wasboth our names together,” saidInger. However, it also spelledthe end of the Otaki school. TheLevin numbers by this stagewere too big for the pair to

manage both schools.According to Catherine,

dance styles evolve and comeback full circle but the school’score dance subjects remainmodern jazz, ballet, tap andtheatre craft.

The school has put on a showevery year since 1989,

choreographed by Inger and thenCatherine.

This year’s production,Charlie’s Chocolate Adventure, isbased loosely on Roald Dahl’sCharlie and the ChocolateFactory. All her students fromage two to adults are involved.

Catherine has been runningthe school singlehanded for thepast 15 years following a job offerto teach in Norway that was toogood to turn down for Inger, wholeft in 1999 and has returned thisyear to ‘retire’.

“The knees and joints are notwhat they were but I can helpCathy out and she lets me teach alittle,” Inger said. “I feel privilegedto be able to continue doing even alittle of what I love doing. Cathyhas done a fabulous job of growingthe business, I’m so proud of her. Here’s to another 25 years.”

“Our door is always open foranyone who wants to dance,”Catherine said.

■ Charlie’s Chocolate Adventure,performed by theCatherine IngerSchool of Dance, Levin Little Theatre,SaturdayDecember 13, 1pmand6pm, SundayDecember 14, 12pmand 5pm, adults $15, children/students $10, for tickets phone 0275897 534, door sales available.

Busy Days at St Mary’s, Foxton

At St Mary’s School this term,we have had seven of ourstudents receive their first HolyCommunion. Holy Communionis when they take for the firsttime the bread and wine, thebody and blood of Christ. Itusually happens when theyare seven years or olderbecause this is considered tobe the age of reason. This ageis also the time they start tofully understand Empathy andCompassion for others. At StMary’s School we nurture thesevirtues as we consider themto be very important aspectsof our students journey withus. Years of effort in carving

A stunning new carving that now takespride of place at the front entrance to LevinEast School took three years to carve bysenior students under the guidance of Levinmaster carver Hone Heke.

Initiated by principal at the time,Pauline May, the student-led design usedtraditional Maori carving techniques taughtby Hone. The carving slowly and carefullywas brought to life by a total of about 70Year 6 and 7, boys and girls, working on itover the years.

The carving was officially unveiled lastweek, with members of the Muaupoko iwi, school staff, pupils and all past studentsinvolved in the project present, sadly Honewas unable to attend.

A video has been made of the project, which will be used to make informationpanels explaining the concept and

meaning in the carving.Principal Hamish Ruawai said the

carving not only had a special place in theschool but also for the children involved.

“The quality of the carving is fantastic, especially for many of the students who hadnever held a chisel before. This was a threeyear journey, an amazing, unforgettableexperience for all involved and somethingthey can look back on with real pride.”

Mr Ruawai said it was also anopportunity for the children to meet andwork closely with a Maori elder. “This wasreal hands-on stuff and part of ourphilosophy to bring the community into theschool.”

Pictured with some of those studentswho took part in the project are teachers, from left, Debbie Matehaere, Ricky Heiheiand Kahura Cameron.

Giving seedlings and cuttings a good start

Most plants start from seedsunless they are cutting grown, layered or cloned from tissueculture.

The recent article I wrote ondragon fruit has resulted in a lotof phone calls and emails fromgardeners showing an interestin growing this cacti. Myinquiries as to further

shipments have not beenanswered, however a week agowe spotted a few dragon fruit ina smaller Countdown inPalmerston North, which wereobviously old fruit left overfrom the earlier shipment. Myplan is to grow a good number ofplants and make cuttingsavailable next year for anyoneinterested in growing thismulti-purpose cacti.

Sometimes gardeners aretheir own worst enemy when itcomes to seeds.

Plants produce seeds whenthey reach maturity and willdispatch their seed as naturedetermines. On the soil, in theright conditions they germinate

and produce numerousseedlings. These are what wecall self-sown seedlings. Wheresome gardeners make a mistakeis confusing these seeds withweeds and kill them off. Whenyou can determine thedifference between a weedseedling and a flower seedlingyou will save yourself a lot ofmoney buying new plants.

On the road frontage where Ilive, I made a flowering gardenabout three years ago with arange of flowering plants, someannuals some perennials. Theyare allowed to perform asnature dictates, which meansthey flower, seed and in the caseof the annuals die. When taking

out the dead plants I alwaysshake them over bare soil areas. The frontage will look bare andnot so nice for a time until theseedlings develop intoflowering plants, at which timethe area produces a lovely showand all at no further cost. Thereare annual straw flowers(helichrysum), Russel lupinsand gazania along withperennials; geranium, gladioli,Jerusalem artichokes andclimbing roses. Pansy andviolas are two very good self-seeding plants that will pop upall over the place when allowedto.

If you have ever grownnicotiana rustica and allowed to

mature, you will have youngtobacco plants popping up allover the place. My originalcame with some succulentplants that was given as a gift.An awesome plant that catcheshundreds of small pest insectson its sticky leaves, better thanany man made trap.

So next time you are weedingyour gardens try anddistinguish what are weeds andwhat are flower seedlings andsee if you can get some displaysfor free.■ For gardening problems ring meat 0800 466-464 (PalmerstonNorth 3570606) or [email protected]

Honore on the chargeTHE crowdpleaser 57p Calvin Honore being chased by 10w Todd Moffat at the Aluminium PlusWellington saloon championships on Saturday.

By PETER FRANKLIN

Deteriorating weather failed tostop Levin’s hard-chargingCalvin Honore powering hisChevrolet saloon car to a well-earned second place in theAluminium Plus WellingtonSaloon Championships onSaturday.

With no racing in PalmerstonNorth, the ‘Palmy Army’ headedsouth to the capital for the salooncar champs, which attractedother top drivers including 15gDan Wallace, 66r Peter Church,51s Russell Gorrie, 28s JohnnyYoung and 908s Jarrod McBeth.

Gary Smith, 8w, made themost of his front grid draw inheat one, as he streaked away toa good lead for the first three laps

but ‘ran out of gas’ and retired tothe infield leaving 15g DanWallace to take the lead. Wallacemanaged to fend off 57p CalvinHonore and 10w Todd Moffat towin.

Back in the pits, Honore waspleased with the first race butworried about his next two griddraws towards the back of the17-car field.

Heat two saw Stratford’s 28sJohnny Young’s bad nightcontinue — after a fire under thebonnet in heat one, his woescontinued being towed on to theinfield before the race gotstarted. However, Honore put inanother excellent drive from grid12 to finish fifth.

The third heat was all aboutpoints consolidation. Honore

threw caution to the wind andguided the 57p car through thepack. While others around himrubbed body panels, Honore keptit clean, squeezing his Chevroletracer into the smallest of gaps.

However, Honore could do nobetter than another fifth placing.

Todd Moffat, 10w, had beenamong the action all night andquietly added points to his tallythat had him and Honore in firstequal on points after the threeheats, which went into a four-laprun off for first and second place. All eyes were on the two highly-charged racers as they poweredinto turn one and made contact, leaving a disappointed Honoreon the infield and Moffat takingthe top step of the podium andthe championship.

What is an LBPLBPs are designers, carpenters, brick andblocklayers, roofers, external plasterers, siteand foundation specialists who have beenassessed to be competent to carry out workessential to a residential building’s structure orweather tightness.

When you need an LBPIf you’re thinking of getting building orrenovation work done on your house orapartment, you need to check if it’s ‘restrictedbuilding work’ (RBW). If it is, you’ll need alicensed building practitioner – or LBP – todo it. Restricted building work involves thebuilding’s structure, weather tightness, anddesign of fire safety systems.

Because this work is so important, it’sonly allowed to be done by licensed buildingpractitioners (LBPs). LBPs are assessed beforegetting licensed, and have to maintain theirskills to keep their licence. Restricted buildingwork, and the requirement to use LBPs to doit, was brought in on 1 March 2012 (throughchanges to the Building Act 2004).

What are LBPs?In November 2007 the Ministry of Business,Innovation and Employment (MBIE) (formerlyDepartment of Building and Housing)established the licensed building practitionerscheme under the Building Act 2004. Thisscheme sets out a regulated process whereskilled and/or qualified building practitionersmust demonstrate their ability to meetindustry consulted competencies in order toobtain the status of being LBPs.

The scheme has7 licence classes:• Design• Site (these are on-site supervisors

or project managers)• Carpentry• Roofing• External Plastering• Brick and Blocklaying• Foundation

Registered architects, plumbers and charteredprofessional engineers are also treated as beinglicensed to do or supervise certain elements ofRBW.

Why restricted buildingwork (RBW) is importantRestricted building work (RBW) is work that iscritical to the integrity of a building. It mustbe done properly to ensure the building isstructurally sound and weather tight.

Restricted building work can only be done orsupervised by trades people who have proventhey are properly skilled – licensed buildingpractitioners (LBPs).

It is an offence for an unlicensed person to carryout or supervise RBW. It is also an offence toknowingly engage an unlicensed person to carryout or supervise restricted building work.

Why use an LBPHiring good professionals to help you can becrucial to the whole building experience. Licensedbuilding practitioners (LBPs) have undergonea robust application process, including awritten application, verbal testing by proficientassessors, and referees’ confirmation of theirwork. They keep up with the changing industryand undergo continuous skills maintenance.

Managing building projectsIf you do not want to manage the buildingproject yourself then you may want to considerengaging a Site LBP.

A Site licence shows competency in organisingand managing building projects. This includeshaving up to date knowledge of regulatoryrequirements, technical knowledge ofconstruction methods and practices, managingpersonnel and providing technical supervision.

When you undertake a building project makecertain that your designer is licensed or is aregistered architect or a chartered professionalengineer.

Design work that includes RBW may not besubmitted by an unlicensed person and will needto be checked by a licensed designer; registeredarchitect or chartered professional engineer.
