FAMILY AFFAIR: Creating a green house was a family affair. When Cynthia decidedone was needed, the family worked around the clock finally finishing in the wee hoursof the morning.

TRIAL: Self-taught gardener Cynthia Hancox has used research and trial and error tomake her garden grow productively all year round. She said having a totally home-produced three course meal was a real buzz.

‘‘We’ve lived from Auckland toCulverden and everywhere in between,’’Cynthia said. ‘‘Living in the MarlboroughSounds with boat-only access gave us ataste of living self sufficiently.’’

The move to Horowhenua came after afairly tumultuous history.

‘‘We were enormously in debt, familymembers had become ill and died, wemoved to be close to my brother who waskilled in a traffic accident a few weeksafter. I developed depression.’’

Cynthia, who didn’t recognise theillness at the time, openly talks about theroad to recovery and even wrote a bookabout it.

‘‘I counsel people who have depressionor just have everyday life problems, helpthem get their mess sorted.’’

Cynthia has found peace living inFoxton, her husband has found work andas her home-schooled children move intonon-school age she has time to research aself sufficient lifestyle and share it. Shehas a group of like minded people whoshare produce, and knowledge.

She is more than half way to meetingher target of producing 1500kgs of fruitand vegetables, runs a small flock ofsheep as lawnmowers and eventuallyfreezer fillers, chickens produce over 100eggs a week.

She was surprised when told she hadwon the Vegetable Growers title, andeven more surprised to learn she was inthe running for New Zealand Gardener ofthe Year.

‘‘It would be so fantastic to win,’’Cynthia said. ‘‘The prizes include gardenproducts, vouchers and a trip to theEllerslie flower show next year.’’

YOUR VIEWS

Grab and DashWith reference to Grab and Dash with ATMcash article (October 16).

Firstly, thank God nobody was injured.Secondly no surprise they

(Armourguard) were robbed.I have been in the position where I have

used Armourguard and can truly say theiroverall security approach-awareness skillsneed a drastic review.

Their laid-back, slack approach — ‘‘itwon’t happen to us’’ — needs to be addressedimmediately.

The entrance to the Mall where foottraffic is high — young kids (it was schoolholidays) right through to seniors and the TeTakere visitors next door — were all in avulnerable position.

I have been saying for some time nowthat the security approach has left anopening for potential criminals to targetthese companies and the smaller the towncommunity, the more relaxed securitybecomes and the higher risk of becoming atarget.

Unless you are vigilant and skilled, accordingly understanding the importanceof your role and the safekeeping of others, you are just another person completing aday’s work.

I trust that the necessary training is ineffect and addressed accordingly.

AgreementThe Lake Horowhenua-Queen Street

Drain Agreement Report issue came up atthe Horowhenua District Council’s meetingon October 2, and was supposed to be basedon adequate knowledge, and adequate con-sideration of, the views and preferences ofthe affected and interested parties bearing inmind the significance of the decision.

I applied in the allocated time period forspeaking rights on the subject matter, andwas declined those rights — the reasongiven was that it was a procedural matter.

‘‘Standard model orders’’, appendix Gstates: Representatives of tangata whenuashall have the right to address any meetingof the local authority commission or subcommission for a period of 15 minutes intotal on any item, or issue which has beenidentified or initiated by tangata whenua, and listed for consideration at a meeting.’’

Councillor Anne Hunt brought the mat-ter up in ‘‘Speaking Rights’’, that at leastfour people requested to speak on the issue, but we were all declined.

Mayor Brendan Duffy declined to givespeaking rights, as he said that he did notknow of anyone who wanted to do so, yet allhe had to do was ask the council secretary.

To obstruct and thwart constructivedebate or dialogue is to deprive meaningfulcommunication and engagement, based onlogic and common sense, for informeddecisions to be made.

Now that has come to pass, a quandaryhas been set where legal advisers and/orconsultants come into the mix, at the cost ofthe poor ratepayers again.

The quandary is the 1973 agreementwas about stopping pollutants enteringthe lake.

Phillip Taueki’s court application is inthe same vein, so where is the Horo-whenua District Council coming from?

BLUEBEAT REPORT WITH COMMUNITY CONSTABLE GRAEME JARVISWe are fortunate in Levin that randomstreet thuggery is not too common, however there was just such an incidenton Saturday night.

About 11.30pm, aLevin man waswalking home afterfinishing work, andtook a route down theSouth Service Lane.He was attacked andseverely beaten, requiring admissionto hospital. A bagcontaining someclothes and books that

he was carrying was stolen.Police would like to hear from anyone

who may have been in the area at thesouthern end of the CBD, the service laneand Cambridge Street around this time, and may have seen a group of three maleswho are also known to have been in thearea at the time.

It is timely to remind everyone aboutavoiding areas that are not well lit atnight, particularly if walking alone. Keepto well lit and well used public spaces, avoiding places such as parks, schoolgrounds and alley ways if possible. Thesame advice is relevant if parking avehicle at night. Choose a well used and

well lit parking space where possible. The Horowhenua Bluelight team,

made up mostly of police officers andsome volunteers, are running a ‘PoolParty’ at the Horowhenua Aquatic Centreon Friday night, October 25, from 5.30pmuntil 8.30pm. Entry will be by gold coindonation and drinks and a sausage sizzlewill be available at a small cost.

These events are fully supervised bypolice officers and volunteers in a fun, safe and friendly atmosphere and areeagerly supported by our 8-13 years.

Particularly with Christmas not toofar away, the relevance of a theftdiscovered by police yesterday may wellbecome more prevalent.

A package was delivered to aletterbox from an on line purchase.

The package was quite large andbarely fitted in to the letterbox and couldbe clearly seen. It was spotted by somelight-fingered youngsters, and stolenfrom the letterbox. Unfortunately forthem, they were also spotted by policeand they were soon found, still with thepackage in their possession.

This scenario could just as easilyhave been a mail order purchase, orsimply a normal postal delivery, butraises the concern about letterbox theftat any time. This incident highlights theneed to have secure deliveryarrangements made prior to the deliverydate. If you cannot be at home when thedelivery is due, then alternate securemeasures should be put in place to helpprevent this type of theft.

Just a quick reminder that ourCommunity Patrol is continuing toupdate the emergency keyholder listsheld by police.

They could pop up anywhere, but areclearly identified by dayglo jackets andidentification cards.

Getting a good doseBy FRANKIEWEBB

FACT BOXAntibiotics, also known asantibacterials, are medications thatdestroy or slow the growth ofbacteria. Bacteria are microscopicorganisms, some of which may causeillness. Before bacteria canmultiplyand cause symptoms, the body’simmune systemwill usually fight offthe infection and destroy the bacteria. There are occasions when some helpis needed from antibiotics. The firstantibiotic was penicillin. Penicillin-related antibiotics ampicillin, amoxicillin and benzylpenicilllin arewidely used today to treat a variety ofinfections.

Levin and Horowhenua VeterinaryCentre are reveiwing the use of anti-biotics.

These are drugs prescribed to combatbacterial infections which the body candevelop resistance if usedinappropriately.

‘‘The ultimate goal is to minimise theuse of important antibiotics we want toreserve for situations of resistance,’’D.Simon R. Clark BVSc Levin and Horo-whenua Veterinary Centre head smallanimal veterinarian said.

‘‘We have established a committee oftwo large animal vets and two smallanimal vets to review current literatureand make recommendations.’’

It isn’t just animals who developresistance. ‘‘We are motivated to do thisto protect antibiotics that are importantfor human use as well as protecting thosethat are important for veterinary use.’’

The Vet centre committee will estab-lish a list of first-line antibiotics for use inparticular situations.

‘‘Already some antibiotics are aredisallowed for veterinary use so they canbe reserved for humans with multi-resistant strains of bacteria,’’ Dr Clarksaid. ‘‘More antibiotics could be blockedfor veterinary use if we appear use theminappropriately.’’

Dr Clark believes antibiotic resistanceis too often blamed on veterinary use, when multi-resistant strains seem todevelop most often in human hospitals.

He has worked hard to eradicatecanine parvo virus in Horowhenua hold-ing ‘budget’ clinics once a month. There isone this Saturday from 2pm until 3pmvaccinating for Canine Parvo Virus anddistemper.

Any healthy dog over six weeks old canbe vaccinated. To keep the costs to aminimum, and to encourage as many dogowners as possible to attend, the charge is$35 cash, no eftpos available.

Beautiful properties using best brandsIn a world of throw-away gadgetry andcheap and nasty products, KC Motors has aproud history of service, experience and atop quality range for the district since 1956.

Offering solutions, not salesmen, KCMotors aims to help its customers keep theirproperties beautiful using the best brandsand the best backup. This is based on itsteam’s extensive product knowledge, KCMotors’ history in the business, as well asgreat parts and service backup loanequipment for breakdowns, and pickup anddelivery.

The KC Motors team has a great blend ofolder staff with a wealth of knowledge, alongwith younger staff who provide the energyand drive to make things happen. Adding tothe team’s experience is the recent additionof Roger Hinton, ex-Levin Motorcycle Centre, who has been in the bike industry for morethan 35 years, and in the 80s held the Stihlagency.

KC Motors’ staff sees it well placed to dealwith new trends in the outdoor equipmentindustry: including the growing lifestyle

block market, which is only getting strongeraround the region. Another trend in themarket is the move away from cheap, buy-on-impulseone- year and throw-it-away-the-next type of products. There has been anoticeable increase at KC Motors incustomers spending money on products, especially generators and waterblasters, which are built on quality and strengthrather than on price.

It is not unusual for staff to see customers

who have bought a waterblaster from a big-box store or online and have it rapidlybreakdown, something that strengthens KCMotors’ obligation to sell on quality, notprice.

A case in point is KC’s line of WalkerMowers, rugged machines built for therigours of daily commercial operation, anddesigned to mow virtually any property.

Every detail of the Walker design has beentested in the field, and as a result everyWalker is reliable, designed to perfection, and manufactured to give top performance.Nothing shows the reliability of the Walkermore than the satisfaction of customerssuch as Repi Wright from Levin Holiday Park.Proud owner of a Walker MCGHS, Repi mowsalmost 2 hectares of land at the parkproperty.

‘‘I used to spend six to seven hours on myold ride-on, but have now reduced this tobetween three and a quarter and four hoursmowing. Repi says a strong selling point ofthe mowers is the service and after-salessupport received from KC Motors.

KC Motors is really accommodating andhappy to help when you need assistance. The quality range of top gear continues withsome of the best brands such as Stihl,Honda, Bearcat, Billygoat, and Hustlermowers; and an excellent region-wideservice including picking up and deliveringequipment as far away as Wellington andTaihape.

SUMMER TIPS FAs New Zealanders, welove to be outdoors at everyopportunity, especially in sunnyweather. Thoughts turn to thebeach, a few early BBQs, andDIY projects around the house.Let’s get ourselves sunsmartready for summer as gettingsunburned or spending too muchtime in the sun when UVR levelsare high can cause problems –including sunburn, prematureskin ageing, cataracts andskin cancer.

The Cancer Society advises“Remember to Slip, Slap, Slopand Wrap and have a greatsunsmart summer!”

Skin cancer is the most commoncancer affecting New Zealandersand costs our health systemover $57 million each year. Each year, an estimated 2000new melanomas and 45,000non-melanoma cases arediagnosed, and over 320New Zealanders lose theirlives to the disease. Melanomais the most serious form of skincancer and New Zealand andAustralian rates of melanoma arethe highest in the world.

It’s also important to note that acertain amount of sun exposureis beneficial, providing the body

with vitamin D. However, during summer, most peopleare potentially able to achieveadequate vitamin D levelsthrough the sun exposure theyreceive during typical outdooractivities outside peak UVRtimes (i.e. before 10am andafter 4pm). It’s excessive andharmful patterns of exposure tothe sun that increase the risk ofdeveloping skin cancer.

There are three main typesof skin cancers - melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma andbasal cell carcinoma.

Mrs Hocquard, ManawatuSunSmart Advisor, says it’svital people learn how to beSunSmart and minimise the risksof skin cancer.

“The good news is most skincancer is preventable if weavoid over-exposure to UVR.The more we practise SunSmartbehaviours, the more we canreduce our chances of gettingskin cancer. Younger peopleneed to be especially carefulas one or more episodes ofsunburn in childhood andadolescence increases the risk ofmelanoma in later life.”

Be SunSmart and have funin the sun safely this summer

Three very wise medical menByMICHAELDALLYand PEARL FORSTER

lvn181013history1

VIVISECTION: Galen dissects a pig to show that the cutting of the laryngeal nerve stopped it from squealing.

lvn181013history2

FLAWED: Claudius Galenus, aka‘Galen of Pergamom’.

Fourteen centuries is a long timefor one man’s teachings to beaccepted as right, especially whensome of them were wrong.

Claudius Galenus, betterknown as ‘Galen of Pergamom’(modern Turkey), was physician toseveral Roman Emperors andduring his time — 129 to 216 AD —he established a school of medicalthinking that lasted for 1400 years.

Much of Galen’s research andfindings were accurate, and wayahead of his time; amazingly, heperformed surgery to removecataracts.

What is even more astonishingis that he did so using a techniqueremarkably similar to that stillpractised today. Galen was morethan a physician, he was aphilosopher too, and much of hissage advice has survived thecenturies.

‘‘If everyone who undertook toteach and write something wouldfirst demonstrate these things withdeeds, overall, few false thingswould be said.’’ That is perhapsone of his best.

The story of Galen has a widermessage, though. No one of us isright about everything, all thetime. Just because the churchendorsed Galen’s teachings, veryfew dared to challenge his beliefs. One of his suppositions was thatmen had one less rib bone thanwomen. Adam lost one to makeEve, so it had to be so.

Then there was the ‘fact’ thehuman jaw is composed of twobones. This last teaching persistedsince the dissecting of humanbodies was forbidden; it wasbelieved that this would allow

their spirits to escape. Instead,Galen dissected dogs (which dohave two jaw bones), monkeys andpigs.

Galen’s theories that the braincontrols muscle movement, thatdiet, fitness and hygiene —physical and mental — influenceour health, and that chemicaldrugs made from dried herbs couldcure diseases, were all correct. And those teachings gave somebalance to his incorrecthypotheses. Among these last werealso the mistaken beliefs thatbloodletting and purging could beused to heal; that the body hasseparate systems for veins andarteries; and that our large legbones match our large arm bones.

Galen’s teachings on anatomylasted as ‘truths’ for those 14centuries until a young professorat the University of Padua (Italy)published his seven-volume work,De Humani Corporis Fabrica (Onthe Fabric of the Human Body) in1543.

Andreas Vesalius used arevolutionary small, speciallydesigned — and quite private —lecture chamber to teach hisstudents. His steeply rising rows ofseats allowed his students to seehim opening human bodies toshow them what was inside. Thus,Vesalius cleverly by-passedchurch rulings. He also avoidedtaking up Holy Orders; those whodid were forbidden to ‘‘spill blood’’.

And so Vesalius became thenew master, overturning much ofwhat Galen had taught aboutanatomy. Today, his drawings arestill considered to be masterpieces, they are so precisely detailed.

Galenic thinking on thecirculation of the blood remained, though, until one of Vesalius’

students from Padua, theEnglishman William Harvey, usedsimple mathematics to prove thatthe liver was not continuouslyproducing blood to be absorbed bythe body. Harvey’s basic equation(converted to metrics) was: theheart was expelling a measured4.7mm each time it pumped; thismultiplied by 2000 beats (orpumps) per hour for 24 hourswould equal an utterly impossible225,600 litres for the liver toproduce each and every day.

Rather, Harvey proposed (andproved) the human heart pumpeda limited volume of blood aroundthe body through just one systemof veins and arteries. Harvey’sTheory of the Circulation of theBlood was challenged fiercely byGalenic thinkers but, fortunatelyfor him, by the 17th century thepractice of eliminating one’s

challengers by secretly poisoningthem had faded. Harvey wasphysician to two English kings andfounder of the iconic FourPrinciples for Hospitals still usedtoday.

These three great men were, ofcourse, building on the thoughtsand theories of others. They weresimply the ones brave — orstubborn — enough to challengethe establishment, to becomeaccepted and so survive. Thepenalty for heretics was oftendeath, as so many unknownchallengers found out, with theirnames and theories rarelymentioned in the history booksthat laud Galen, Vesalius andHarvey.

To borrow from the sentimentsof an old nursery rhyme, ‘‘WhenI’m right I’m very very right, butwhen I’m wrong I’m rotten.’’

GEARING UP: Leading Isle of Man TT racerGuy Martin will race in the annual BoxingDay Wanganui street race meeting on aSuzuki Superbike.

By COLIN SMITH

Leading Isle of Man TT racer GuyMartin will race in New Zealand laterthis year.

Martin, who was the central character inthe movie Closer To The Edge, a no-holds-barred, behind-the-scenes film about racingat the legendary Isle of Man circuit, willcontest the annual Boxing Day Wanganuistreet race meeting on a Suzuki Superbike.

The Wanganui event is the final round ofthe Suzuki Series, which also visitsHampton Downs on December 6-7 andManfeild on December 14-15.

‘‘The entries are really starting to flowin,’’ said series organiser Alan Willacy.

‘‘We have seen a huge amount of interestfrom overseas again this year too, withEnglishman Guy Martin entered for BoxingDay, Italian supermotard ace MalachiMitchell-Thomas arriving for the series,Germany’s Thomas Kreutz is returning thisyear and Australian brothers Craig andSteve Trinder, among others, have indicatedtheir intentions to race here too.

‘‘I’m particularly excited about GuyMartin coming. He’s a real entertainer, buthe’s coming here to win, not just to ridearound. He’ll have a Suzuki F1 superbike, generously supplied by Suzuki NewZealand, and he’s sure to be a real crowdfavourite.

‘‘What you see is what you get with GuyMartin. He’s a straight-talker and a fineracer . . . a real character of the sport,’’ saidWillacy.

Christchurch’s Dennis Charlett(Underground Brown Suzuki GSX-R1000)won the Suzuki Series’ Formula One classlast season and he will again be among thefavourites to win this time.

Nissanmotoring triviaHow many Nissan models available in NewZealand are actually Japanese cars?

Not as many as you might think, and withthe introduction of the Smyrna, the Tennessee-built new generation Pathfinder the globalflavour of the Nissan New Zealand line-up willbe further widened.

The baby Micra small car is built in Indiaat a Nissan-Renault facility at Chennai, which opened in March 2010 while theSamut Prakan plant in Thailand producesthe Pulsar hatch and sedan, the Maxima andalso the Navara DX, RX and ST ute models. However, the top-of-the-line Navara ST-Xmodels are built by Nissan Iberica inBarcelona, Spain.

Nissan’s plant at Sunderland in thenorth-east of England builds the Juke andQashqai crossover models, which are sold inNew Zealand.

The only mainstream Nissan model soldin New Zealand, which is built in Japan, isthe X-Trail while the Murano crossover, theLeaf electric car, the new Patrol and the 370Zand GT-R sports models are also sourced ex-Japan.

ON A ROLL: It was all smiles forFoxton’s Alec Wilson, but littledid he know that one lap intothe first race of the season hewould end up on his roof.

It was action from start tofinish at Palmerston North’sRobertson HoldenInternational Speedway onSaturday, with the start of a bigseason that will includechampionships in stockcarsand superstocks and alsocelebrates the circuit’s 50thyear of racing.

Foxton’s Alec Wilson tookthe dubious honour of beingthe first to roll his car in the2013-14 season.

The spill happened in thefirst stockcar heat of the night.

One lap into the race,Wilson got tangled up withanother car and the wall, andthe impact saw him ending upon his lid. He wasn’t injuredand went on to compete in theother races, taking fourth inthe second heat.

In the superstock ranks, visiting drivers from Rotorua,

Wellington and Aucklandmade their presence felt, getting stuck into the locals.

Rotorua’s Bryce Steiner No118R took the win in the firstheat, followed closely byWellington’s Dale Robertson incar No 89W, although NZ1Shane Penn showed thevisitors why he carries thenumber 1 on his car, winningthe second heat and featurerace in style.

For a pure adrenaline rush, nothing on the night comparedwith Kapiti’s Jamie Larsen inhis immaculate Kapiti Carssprintcar, as he unleashed the800 horsepower on tap, turningthe car sideways halfway downthe straight and recording thefastest lap time of the meetingwith 13.8 seconds.

Ministock (youth) camedown to a battle between 99PJames Mallia and Wellington’sJosh Patterson, Malliawinning the first race with

Paterson right on his bumper.Patterson won the second with

Mallia all over the back of hiscar.
