DESPITE it’s environmental woes, on a gorgeous autumn evening Lake Horowhenua really does become a jewel in thecrown of Levin. Looking deceivingly inviting, Linda Adams captured this photograph of the Lake in its autumnsplendour. Perhaps a vision for the future to a time when the Lake is again a place to proud of.

YOUR VIEWS

Keeping ConnectionThe Capital Connection is a train serviceon a downward spiral, unless those of us inthe district do better.

I saw a programme which talked aboutthe Settle-Carlisle railway line in England. That line was due for closure due to poorpatronage and non-profitability.

Sound familiar? Locals successfullyargued the case to keep it open based ontourism and having more than one trans-port system servicing the needs of thepopulation.

That campaign was won by locals — notthe railway company. Perhaps if thedistricts involved in the capital connectionhad a group following the lead of theaforementioned group a case could bemade to save the only passenger trainservice in our region.

However, that group may need tobroaden its horizons and ask why couldn’tthe Capital Connection run a loop fromPalmerston north (via Levin) to Welling-ton, as it does now, then return throughMasterton and end back in Palmerstonnorth? Perhaps two circuits could beachieved in a day before the train wasrequired back in Wellington for the even-ing commuter return to Palmerston North.

If these loops could be accommodated(and proved to be profitable), then wewould all have a commuter service servingthe lower North Island.

Such an ambitious plan would requirecommunity groups on both sides of theranges to work together with a hugeemphasis being placed on tourism oppor-tunities in the form of day-trips for locals

and overseas visitors. Anyone interestedor have additional thoughts?

Trust in Electra?Did you notice the recent election ofTrustees for the Electra Trust? For each ofthese five nominees there were 20 Benefici-aries who supported their nomination. You will never know who these 100 peopleare.

Today at the Electra Trust 2014 AGM inParaparaumu we can change that. Itemnumber 9 on the agenda is a Notice ofMotion tabled at last year’s AGM for thispurpose. The vote will be taken by thosewho choose to attend. There will not be apostal ballot on this item. The resolution is:“That the nomination forms, includingseconders, be made available to a Benefici-ary following a written request.”

Judy Keall, who has served as a Trusteefor nine years, seconded this Notice ofMotion.

Do you agree that these names shouldbe made available? Every Local Authorityin New Zealand must supply this informa-tion if it is requested in writing. Whyshould the Electra Trust be any different?

The Trustees have confirmed that theTrust Deed does not have any wordingwhich stops this from being done.

I consider it is important to havetransparency in our locally owned ElectraTrust. If you agree please support me at theAGM today.

MANAWATU settlers’ first home circa 1880s.

Foxton, Shannon and Tokomaru featurein a new book detailing theenvironmental history of Manawatu.

Ravaged Beauty byDr Catherine Knight(pictured right) tellsthe story of Manawatufrom the timePolynesian peoplefirst settled on itscoast, through totoday.

She will be givingan illustrated talk onher book in Te Takere,Levin, next week.

Dr Knight said what makes this bookdifferent from conventional histories isthat the landscape is a central actor in thestory, rather than simply being abackdrop to the human “drama” as itunfolds.

She said Horowhenua places such asFoxton, Shannon, Tokomaru and theMakerua Basin are central to the story ofthe Manawatu.

“It was the coastal area north andsouth of Foxton that was first settled byPolynesians 600 years ago; and later, inthe 19th century, the Awahou Block wasfirst area of the Manawatu to be settledby Europeans,” she said.

The Foxton Port was for a time thehub of industrious activity — initiallythe only means of exporting timber, flaxand other goods out of the roadlessdistrict.

“But by the early 20th century itsheyday was over, in great part due to thedynamic nature of the riverscape.”

From the late 19th century and intothe 20th century, Shannon and Foxtonwere the centres of a thriving flaxmillingindustry, boasting the largest flaxmill inthe Southern Hemisphere.

“In the 1940s, the Whirokino Cut,intended to alleviate flooding, left itspermanent legacy on Foxton and theriver, dislocating the Foxton Loop fromthe river’s flow.”

A transformation of a different, morepositive nature was that of the Manawatuestuary, she said.

“It was ‘transformed’ from a ‘muddywasteland’ to a wetland of internationalimportance, thanks to the efforts ofHorowhenua resident Joan Leckie.

“The book also features the inimitableHelen Wilson, one of Levin's firstEuropean residents, and draws on thework of Horowhenua’s ‘nationaltreasure’, G. L. Adkin's meticulousresearch and beautifully drawn maps.”■ Dr Knight’s talk is at 12.15pm onWednesday in the openmeeting room at TeTakere. Admission is free. TOP TRIO: Vessa Leppanen, Diedre Irons and Andrew Joyce.

Classic combinationThree of the country’s foremost classicalmusicians will join forces for theWaikanae Music Society’s next concert onSunday August 3.

The trio, comprising pianist DiedreIrons, NZSO Concertmaster Vesa-MattiLeppanen and NZSO principal celloAndrew Joyce, has drawn someenthusiastic praise from critics.

Earlier this year Middle C reviewerPeter Mechen wrote: “Here were soundsdevised and played with a spontaneity andwonderment which seemed to disarmeveryday preoccupations and conjure uprealms of beauty and fancy, simply for ourdelight and pleasure.”

For their Waikanae concert they will

play trios by Beethoven (Opus 1, No 1) andBrahms (Opus 8) as well as Debussy’sSonata for Violin and Piano and also theSonata for Cello and Piano.

These sonatas are both very late works, written in the last year of Debussy’s lifeand it is a rare occasion to have the chanceto hear them both on the sameprogramme.

The concert, in the Waikanae MemorialHall, is at 2.30pm. Door sales will beavailable or tickets can be bought atWaikanae New World, Moby DickensBooks in Paraparaumu Beach or LushDesign Gallery in Raumati.

Rugby finals showdown — north vs south

LVN250714Twrugby

WHAT’S AT STAKE: HKRFU referee education advisor Matt Peters holds up the Ramsbottom Cup, left, and Bill Muir Memorial Cupthat will be played for on Saturday, in a north-south rugby clash between Premier and Senior Reserves Horowhenua-Kapiti rugbyteams. The Ramsbottom Cup has been contested since 1945 and the Bill Muir Memorial Cup since 1995.

By TANYAWOOD

It will be a north-south clash tomorrow asHorowhenua-Kapiti rugby teams go intobattle to bring home the silverware.

The Horowhenua-Kapiti RugbyFootball Union finals, being played atLevin Domain tomorrow, will seePremier team Shannon take onParaparaumu for the Ramsbottom Cupand Foxton go head-to-head with NgatiToa to take the Senior Reserves top titleand Bill Muir Memorial Cup.

Horowhenua-Kapiti Rugby FootballUnion chief executive Corey Kennett saidthe union would be happy with whoeverwins.

“There can only be one winner in eachgrade on the day but we think all fourteams should be congratulated formaking it this far. It’s a fantasticexperience to make a final and winning afinal is something that stays with you forthe rest of your life.”

He said it was good to see the teamsleading in both grades come through, andthe north-south finals was coincidental.

“I’m sure that will bring a little bit ofrelish to the occasion.”

It has been 23 years since Shannon lastheld the Ramsbottom Cup after winningit in three consecutive years from 1989 to1991, and 2001 since they last played in thefinal, beaten by Levin Wanderers, the lastNorthern team to hold the cup.

Paraparaumu, the currenttitleholders, also took the RamsbottomCup in 2012.

The Bill Muir Memorial Cup has spentless time out of the district, last won byShannon in 2012.

Foxton won the cup in 2005 after firstclaiming it in 2004, while current cupholders, Ngati Toa, also held it twicebefore in 2003 and 1999.

Kennett said it was too difficult topedict a winner.

On paper Toa, as returning championsand having won all 10 games played thisseason, could be seen as the bookies

favourite, but the tussle betweenShannon, top of the table, and returningchamps Paraparaumu, is likely to betight. Both teams have each won 11 out oftheir 15 games played with just two pointsseparating the teams on the points table.

According to Kennett, the finals are atime to appreciate both the on and off-field teams.

“The finals are a culmination of a lot ofhard work by many people andvolunteers from all the clubs. Everyonesees the players take the field but few seethe incredibly hard work that goes onbehind the scenes.

“We just hope the weather plays ball,we have a great turnout and it’s a greatday, enjoyable for the spectators,

referees, players and volunteers.”Billed as a family event, the Domain

will be an alcohol-free zone. Tickets at thegate cost $5 for adults, free for secondaryschool students and under.■ HKRFURugby Finals, Levin Domaintomorrow. Kickoff 12.45pm Senior Reserves,2.45pm Premier match. Cup presentationswill be made after each match.

Hood has vision to boost CD cricket

NEIL HOOD

Establishing a “power-of-eight” brand in the CentralDistricts cricket region is thevision of new chief executiveNeil Hood.

The former HorowhenuaCollege student, born andbred in Koputaroa, and well-known to cricket lovers as‘Pods’, Hood, 35, took up hisnew role this month.

His vision is to make CD,which includes Hawke's Bay,Manawatu, Wairarapa,Horowhenua-Kapiti,Taranaki, Nelson andWanganui, a strongorganisation on and off thepark.

He feels the CD brand iscurrently “disjointed" buttherein lies the challenge.

“We have geographicaldifferences and that'sdifficult but that's who we

are," he said. “It's hard forpeople who come fromoutside to understand theissues we have, so forsomeone like me who'sgrown up and worked in thearea, I know what thoseissues are."

Hood wants to build teamsand a brand that peopleaspire to play for.

“We want locals who cango on to play for NewZealand.”

“Driven", is how Hooddescribes himself.

The former Horowhenua-Kapiti allrounder graduatedfrom Massey University witha degree in media studies andMasters in sportsmanagement. While working

for a decade as ManawatuCricket Association chiefexecutive for 10 seasons, heobtained post-graduatediplomas in business law, finance and sportsmanagement. He also took onthe portfolio of theHorowhenua-Kapiti CricketAssociation for four yearsduring that spell.

He also ran the Manawatuassociation's spin-bowlingacademy and coached juniorprovincial rep sides and awomen's representativeteam.

“This (CD chief executive)has always been a greatposition and something Iaspired to and feel I can makea difference in,” said Hood.

Trackside has a unique location with it’s views over the racetrack at Levin. There will be an opportunity to watchthe horses at work in a training environment and to enjoy uninterrupted rural views.

You’ve probably promised yourself that “one day” you will free yourself from your family home and garden, findyourself an idyllic residence in a nice location and start really living.

Well that day has come….

The simple truth is that you can downsize from your existing home and upgrade to a quality lifestyle in a brandnew warm double glazed home, usually for far less than your current home is worth.

Imagine if you could wake up without having to worry about lawn mowing or weeding. If you could just decideto head overseas for a few weeks knowing that your home is secure enough to just lock-up and leave.

From previous experience our developer has found that although the lifestyle villages are a community ofindividuals, the resident life-stylers do tend to have a lot in common. These are the warm, friendly outgoingsingles and couples who will be your neighbours and may very well become your friends.

It’s a lifestyle opportunity for the over 50s who are free of children, enjoy socialising, sports, games, relaxationand travel.

Like you, they want to be part of a caring community of like-minded people. They need to feel safe and secureand they also want to be able to enjoy peaceful privacy whenever they choose.

Trackside Villas is a lifestyle community that, when completed, will consist of 58 two bedroom villas and acaretaker’s home.

Weekly LevyBuy a home in Trackside Villas and all you’ll pay is a modest weekly levy which covers the costs of:• 24 hour emergency paging facility • Weekly rubbish collection • External window cleaning• Lawn mowing and gardening • Exterior maintenance • Building insurance • Village maintenance

Residents pay their own rates and utility charges

Giving new plants the best chance to thrive

PREPARE your soil to give your plants the best chance.

Diggingin

WALLY RICHARDS

■ Continued fromWednesday:

If you have good fertile, humus rich soil, all you need todo when you plant is dig a holeadd a few goodies and plant.

Many gardeners will haveeither clay or sandy type soilsand that is where you are bestnot to make a normal plantinghole.

Instead make a hole twice thedepth and width than you need.Mix the diggings in yourwheelbarrow with a goodpurchased compost about halfand half.

You line the bottom of the holewith this mix to about the rightlevel to plant. Now here is thenext consideration to make, dependent on the plant andwhether the area is prone todrought or flooding.

If the plant hates wet feet thento compensate you need to plantit higher than the surroundingsoil in fact on a mound.

If the area is prone to droughtthen plant deeper than thesurrounding soil so its in ahollow that will easily catchwater when you water or it rains.

Besides the foods mentioned, Iwould highly recommend thatyou place some Rok Solid in theplanting hole along with someGypsum and a little bit ofBioPhos. The BioPhos is naturalphosphorus broken down by

microbes instead of acid. Thus you are adding more soil

life to the new plant’s root zone.If you are wanting to give the

plants an extra good start thendrench the soil after plantingwith Mycorrcin and Magic

Botanic Liquid (MBL)The Mycorrcin is a food for

Mycorrhizal fungi which attachto the roots of plants and extendsthe effective root system byabout 800 per cent.

The microscopic threads of

the fungi gather nutrients andmoisture for the plant inexchange for carbohydrates. Thefungi also aids the production ofhumus which is what we need forthe ultimate in soils.

The MBL supplies minerals to

the soil, releases locked upminerals and cleans up chemicalresidues from the past.

Doing what I have describedwould give your plants the beststart in the soil that I am aware ofbut only part of the plant is in thesoil, the foliage is going to beeffected by wind, sun andclimate; so for one final big helpin establishing, it would be tospray all the foliage, under andover with Vaporgard.

Vaporgard puts a film overthe leaves sprayed that lasts forabout three months. The film notonly protects the leaves from thelikes of wind damage it alsoprotects the chlorophyl from UVallowing the plant to generatemore energy from sunlight. Theplant benefits with frostprotection down to minus 3C,plus the film reduces thetranspiration by about 30 to 40per cent reducing its waterneeds.

I have heard cases whereplantings in more adverseconditions using a number of theprocedures described haveachieved a three to five yearsheadstart on the new plantswhen compared to ones that werejust planted without.

These plants struggle foryears to establish before they canperform.

Whether it is seedlings youare planting or specimen trees, the more care you take in theplanting will determine howsoon you will achieve the resultsdesired.

Community effort seesMoutoa Hall restoredByMICHAELAWILLIAMS

LVN200714lfmoutoa

THE gates of remembrance atMoutoa Hall as they were beforethe fire.

After an electrical fault in the roofresulted in the burning down ofMoutoa Hall in March 2007, localresidents are finally glad to havethe hall restored and an officialopening ceremony of the hall washeld on Sunday July 13 attendedby those who have been involvedwith the hall, both past andpresent.

They celebrated the return ofthis hall that held so manymemories for the local area.

The Moutoa settlement wasfirst formed in 1866 with 21 peoplepurchasing the surveyed land andsoon after flax milling thrived inthe area as it was the greatmainstay of the early pioneers. This industry continued toprovide work for the “DetentionCamp” prisoners formed duringWorld War II.

With the ending of this erafarming of sheep and cattlebecame important; the focus todaybeing dairying. Only with thecompletion of the ManawatuCatchment Boards floodwayscheme in 1963, has the district ofthe lower Manawatu been able toreach its full potential.

On March 12 1912, a meetingwas held in the social room of theWhitanui Flax Mill — one of thetwo areas in Moutoa — to discussthe possible building of a hall. Twohundred pounds was the

estimated cost, but World War Iintervened and the funds raisedwere redirected to the War Relief.A new fundraising drive wasformed not long after and so theformer wooden structure of theMoutoa Hall was built in 1922.

This served the district well —hosting the annual Fuller familycricket competition from 1957 —until it burnt down in 2007.

A district meeting was called, led by the late Colin Easton andfrom the ashes a rebuild wasundertaken, with the generosity ofthe Horowhenua District Council,Community Trust Boards andindividual donations from thedistrict’s community.

By FRANKIEWEBB

Foxton Beach is home to retired courtjudge Rod Haines QC, and wife Leonie.

The couple have had a remarkable lifemade more so by the fact Rod was bornwithout arms.

Rod has a philosophy which he admitshe has, at times, had to sell — “I was bornarmless, not brainless.”

Rod is an achiever, he served as aNelson city councillor, chairman of ahospital board and a health board, set upa law practice, cruised on self-designedand built canal boats in the UnitedKingdom.

His righthand woman Leonie hasshared and contributed to the amazinglife the couple have enjoyed.

They met when Rod was setting up alaw practice in Nelson, Leonie freshfrom school at 17, became Rod’ssecretary and eventually his wife.

The shift to Horowhenua a fewmonths ago has enabled them to be nearfamily, two sons live in the lower NorthIsland, their daughter and newestgrandchild in England.

The couple may have retired toFoxton Beach, but have no plans of beingidle. Leonie wants to start a book group.

“I have been in a Nelson group for 30years and I miss it,” Leonie said.

“Each member receives a book toread, we meet a month later and talkabout it.”

Rod wants to see boats back on theriver loop and is already interactingwith the Save Our River Trust.

The canal boats designed and built byLeonie and Rod would operate welloffering day or overnight trips.

“We ran overnight trips on the boatsin UK, it was so popular,” Rod said.

“You could do it here.”If anyone could do it, they could.

LOOKING BACK

The uneasy coupling of rail and port in FoxtonContinuing the history of Foxton by localhistorian Tony Hunt

After the establishment of railway yardsnext to the wharf the two activitiesbecame interdependent.

Progress was not always smoothespecially when trade fell away in the mid-1880s. But a saviour was in sight — theconnection of the rail to the line beingbuilt from Wellington. However, this hopewas dashed when the private companybuilding the line decided to have itsjunction with the existing network atLongburn.

But without the direct connection withthe new line the Railways Departmentseems to have put more effort into theFoxton line and, along with the MarineDepartment, the port. The flax boom of the1890s saw more activity and the town grewas a transport centre.

The construction of the Sanson Tram-way in the 1880s had also added to thetrade. One casualty had been the FoxtonHarbour Board, established in 1877, whichwas never really able to carry out itsfunctions in part because of a lack offinance.

The revenue from the port went to the

Railways Department, that had virtuallyfull control of the whole complex. Forexample they regulated access across therailway yards to the port and took allwharfage payments.

Claims were made that little of this wasbeing spent on the upkeep of the port. Thechannel was not being cleared and wasgetting shallower.

In 1908 the Railways Departmentbought the Wellington to Longburn lineand matters got rapidly worse. Allrailways coal had come through Foxtonuntil this point but suddenly this tradedisappeared. The locals were not happy

about this and started pushing for the re-establishment of the Harbour Board. Thiscame about in 1909. The next article willdeal with its life.

Those wishing to delve deeper into thissubject can find details in any of The LineOf the Road, Foxton 1888-1988 or TheFoxton and Wanganui Railway.

Offering customers achoice of engines andspecification gradesas well as two- and

four-wheel-drive variantscreates ample scope for out-of-control model proliferationamong the modern ranks ofSport Utility Vehicles.

Toyota New Zealand seemsto have neatly balanced therequirements of model choiceand keeping the price list to asensible length with its made-in-the-US third generation2014 Highlander lineup.

Things are simplified withthe 3.5-litre V6 petrol enginebeing the sole choice and fromthere Toyota has settled onfive models in four grades ofspecification. It creates a line-up starting at $59,990 andstretching to $80,990 for theluxury flagship model.

My first taste of the newHighlander is the base modelGX, which combines four-wheel-drive and seven-seataccommodation.

The base model status isalmost misleading as theHighlander GX has 18-inchalloy wheels and a reversingcamera as standardequipment. There’s also a6.1-inch display audio system, front fog lamps and LEDdaytime running lights, a rearparking sensor and alarm/immobiliser security system.

Visually the GX isidentified as the onlyHighlander without roof railsand in fact doesn’t have anyGX badging at all — justHighlander AWDidentification.

The Highlander once againfits into the Toyota familybetween the RAV4 and theLandCruiser Prado. Theboldly styled wagon offersseven-seat accommodationwith V6 performance and is arival for the likes of HoldenCaptiva 7, Mazda CX-9, Nissan

Pathfinder and FordTerritory.

A six-speed automatictransmission is standard withall-wheel-drive available onthe GX, GXL, Limited andLimited ZR versions with afront-wheel-drive option onthe GXL grade. Toyota’sfamiliar 2GR-FE 3.5-litre V6engine with dual variablevalve timing controls revssmoothly to develop 201kW at6200rpm and has 337Nm oftorque available at 4700rpmwith some useable muscle atlower revs.

At 100km/h the V6 is usinga relaxed 1800rpm in sixthgear or downshifts to 2100rpmin fifth and 2800rpm in fourth. The close fifth and sixth ratiosmakes for smooth shifting andthose extra couple of hundredrevs are useful for overtakingresponse and uphill runs.

For the all-wheel-driveHighlanders, the combinedcycle fuel consumption israted at 10.6 litres per 100kmand my road test averaged10.9L/100km.

But spend most of yourdriving time in city traffic andgetting better than 12 litresper 100km from theHighlander is a notable result. The V6 runs on 91 octane.

The Highlander boasts asmooth ride with impressivesuspension compliance andquietness at highway speeds. The excellent MichelinLatitude Tour radials in245/60 R18 size play animportant role in the low levelof road noise and the securegrip level.

The electrically assistedsteering is light but once youget used to the low effortrequired the accuracy of thesteering becomes part of therefined driving experience.

Comfortable front seatsand a supportive drivingposition with clearinstruments, tidily arrangedcontrols and excellentvisibility are a key part of theHighlanders appeal.

The GX model driver’s seathas manual cushion heightand slide/recline movementsand the shaping of the driver’s

seat has good side bolstersupport and plenty of cushionlength.

The touchscreen displayaudio is easy to use and theinstrumentation featuresToyota’s clear Optitronmeters. The urethane steeringwheel has tilt and telescopeadjustment with audio, phoneand trip computer switchgear.

The cruise control isoperated from a short, right-hand stalk.

The practicalities of familywagon motoring have beenconsidered by the Toyotadesigners and the Highlanderhas a big 24.5-litre centreconsole storage box with asliding cover between thefront seats. There’s a largeglovebox, a handy shelf in thedashboard, two cup holdersand big front door bins.

Passenger space in thesecond row is helped by theflat floor footwell and the rearseat has a 60/40 split backrestand sliding cushion providingan easy folding mechanism foraccess into the third row.

The third row seats are a60/40 split design and fold intothe floor.

The Highlander offers 269litres of load-space with allthree rows of seating in usewhich expands to a generous813 litres as a five-seater. Theuneven split of the third rowseat allows more loadflexibility as a six-seat vehicle.

Highlander’s standardsafety features includefrontal, front seat side andcurtain shield airbags and adriver’s knee airbag.

Vehicle Stability Control isstandard and for slipperyconditions there are 4x4 Lock,Snow and ESP Off modes plusHill Start and Downhill AssistControl functions.

Making the step up fromGX grade in the Highlanderlineup is a $6000 progressionfor the AWD model and addsroof rails, smart key accessand push button engine start, leather trim, dual-zoneairconditioning, heated frontseats and power driver’s seatadjustment.

The GXL front-wheel-drive

model is $61,990.The Highlander is all-new

but the package is a familiarone with large-size wagonversatility and smooth V6performance. The base modelGX may lack the luxurycomforts of the moreexpensive models but itdelivers on the core appeal ofseven-seat accommodation,all-wheel-drive, a 2000kgbraked towing capacity and acomprehensive safetypackage.

Four moreblack beltsat localmartialarts club

LVN180714splblackbelt

FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: Johhny Snow, Brenda Snow, Fiona Parrant, Steve Parrant (club representatives in the absence of AndrewSalton) Alli Veerbeek and Fiona Read.

The Salton Taekwon-Do Academy isproud to announce that they have fournew black belts to add to their growingclub numbers.

Fiona Read, Alli Veerbeek, Johnnyand Brenda Snow travelled to Taurangain mid-June to test for their first degreeblack belt under the watchful eye ofexaminers Master James Rimmer 7thDegree and Mr Graham Patterson 6thDegree and national coach.

This is the first step along the way tothe ultimate 9th degree.

A student of ITF Taekwon-Do usuallyneeds to train for at least three to fouryears to gain the knowledge andnecessary skills to gain promotion to the1st degree black belt.

For the four students it was the resultthey were looking for after four years ofdedication, sacrifices and training.

Mrs Read was a member of theHorowhenua club back in the early 1990sbefore taking a break when she attainedthe 3rd gup level (Blue belt red tip). Shedecided it was time to get her twodaughters involved in the art and as aresult she decided to start training againherself to support her children.

A lot of changes had been madethrough the 15 years or so that Mrs Readhad been absent, but she managed to

devote herself to conquering thenecessary changes and realised thatattaining her 1st degree black belt wasachievable.

She set her sights on that black belt, focused and conquered.

Brenda and Johnny Snow joined theHorowhenua club in the early 2000sbefore they also started a family.

Once youngest daughter Ashley wasfour Mrs Snow brought her along to theclub’s junior classes.

Mrs Snow soon became an assistantinstructor within that junior classstructure and then became an officialmember of the senior class. She is alsothe Salton Taekwon-Do AcademiesInstructor for the KUBZ, known as thelittle bears class, which is for 3 to 5 yearolds.

She has had to juggle motherhood, club training and junior classinstructing in order to attain her firstdegree — a task that has certainly beendemanding, challenging and at timesrewarding.

Mr Snow has natural ability; he is acomplete all-round taekwon-do studentwho excels in all aspects of the art.

He assists in the senior class whenrequired and is an official assistantinstructor with his wife Brenda for thelittle bears classes.

Mr Snow attained an A pass at thegrading, the only person at the gradingto achieve that result. He is now lookingforward to the new challenges that awaithim both as a student and as anassistant.

Alli Veerbeek is a natural talent witha great future ahead of her. She has beenwith the club just on three years now andhas proved her ability winning manyregional and national titles in sparringand patterns.

As a result of passing her Dan gradingshe is now eligible to trial for the NewZealand junior team to compete at theVenice (Italy) world championships in2015.

“I have no doubts that Alli will beselected as part of that team” clubInstructor Andrew Salton said.

Mr Salton said she just needs to showsome dedication, focus and commitmentwhich is not easy for someone so young, and at 14 years of age Alli could competeat three world championships at thejunior level.

With the four new black belts theSalton Taekwon-Do Academy can boastof having 15 black belts registered to theclub at the moment. Training is at theHorowhenua events centre on Monday,Wednesday and Friday evenings from5.30–7.30.
