First strike forHorowhenuasexual offenderBy ALECIA ROUSSEAU

‘I ask you to reflecton the evidence given

at trial there is noindication of remorseover and above the

guilty pleas.’PROSECUTOR

A Horowhenua businessman whosexually assaulted a young girl hasbeen sentenced to seven years’imprisonment and given his firstwarning according to the threestrikes legislation.

Harold William Haley, 58,appeared in the Palmerston NorthDistrict Court for sentencing onWednesday.

In August a jury found Haleyguilty on three counts of indecentassault on a girl aged under 12 andone of sexual violation. Theoffending took place between 2006and 2007.

Haley had earlier admitted twocharges of indecent assault andone of sexual violation on the girlat a younger age.

Victim impact statements wereread to the court, describing thecomplainant’s childhood as anightmare. The victim’s life hadbeen significantly affected in manyways, including being deleted frompeople’s lives because they nowsaw her as ‘that’ girl, the one whowas sexually abused. It alsolabelled Haley as the taker of whatcould have been a perfectchildhood and someone who hadno thoughts to the consequences ofwhat he had done. Judge LesAtkins indicated the mostaggravating factor to be consideredwas the victim’s vulnerability.

‘‘It’s about holding youaccountable for the harm caused toyour victim,’’ he said.

Crown prosecutor BenVanderkolk described theoffending as defiantly andinexplicably selfish, with a seriousbreach of trust that needed to betaken into account. ‘‘I ask you toreflect on the evidence given attrial there is no indication ofremorse over and above the guiltypleas,’’ he said.

Defence lawyer Phil Mitchellasked Judge Atkins to considerHaley’s early admissions.

‘‘The bottom line is Haleypleaded guilty in October last yearto those three charges, he shouldreceive credit for admitting topolice matters that were unknownand that wouldn’t have come tolight otherwise.’’

The public gallery in thecourtroom was full and as Haleywas led away, one woman shouted‘paedophilia’ while another yelled‘you make me sick’. One womanwas led out of the courtroom bysecurity staff.

Haley retorted by repeating,‘you people have short memories’.

Lengthy research reunites Danish family

lvn081013ljffamily

REUNION: Delene, left, Ivan and Ashley Prebensen were pleased to meet American cousin Bill Hanson, seated, when he visited them 140 years after Jens Prebensen arrived in New Zealand from Denmark. They gave him a book on the Prebensen family’s story in Denmark, New Zealand and America.

By LINDA FLETCHER

FAMILY TIESJens Prebensen had sixbrothers and a sister, andthree half-sisters and a half-brother.He and his wife Ane hadseven children, one of themdying as an infant inDenmark.Jens and his family arrived inChristchurch on September20, 1873 and were inquarantine until late October.Thirty people died on thevoyage, including Ane andtwo of their daughters. He remarried AneMarieMadsen, known as Anna, andhad three more children.Their grandson A D (Dave)Prebensen was theMayor ofNapier from 1983-89.‘‘There’s not very many of usin New Zealand,’’ familyhistorian Ashley Prebensen ofLevin said.

Two branches of a Danish familywho spread their wings to otherparts of the world last centuryhave met one another after morethan 30 years of genealogicalresearch.

Ivan Prebensen, son Ashleyand daughter Delene welcomedretired US Air Force chiefmaster Sergeant Bill Hanson totheir home in Levin earlier thismonth, exactly 140 years afterJens Prebensen arrived with hisfamily in New Zealand.

Ivan Prebensen startedlooking for his family inDenmark in 1979 and discoveredthat while his great-grandfather

Jens had emmigrated to NewZealand in 1873 another branchof the family — Jens’s sisterBerthe — had gone to the US.

He was able to uncover hisfamily’s New Zealand story, butlong-distance research was noteasy 30 years ago.

‘‘There were no computerswhen I started, so I had to getpeople in Denmark to do theresearch for me,’’ Ivan said.

Fast forward 34 years and sonAshley, with all the resources ofthe internet, takes up the familystory.

‘‘I found out that Berthe wentto Wisconsin. Her husband,Hans, died in Denmark and shefollowed her three sons toAmerica with her youngestson.’’

He found Berthe’sdescendants were Hansons, buttrying to find them was likelooking for a needle in ahaystack.

Their lucky break washaving the Swanland surnamein their family tree. Theytracked down a Larry Swanlandwho was able to put them intouch with his cousin Bill, whowas able to supply photographsand stories about the Americanbranch of the family.

Ashley took his father’s text, and added the new informationgathered and wrote the family’sstory, self-publishing it in ahardcover book and presentinga copy to Bill when he visitedthem.

Ivan is delighted with theresult.

‘‘It had fizzled out completelybut Ashley revived it. He startedthe American research andwrote their story.’’

Bill enjoyed his time in NewZealand which he described as

‘clean’ and ‘lush’.The Prebensens — Ivan and

his children Ashley and Delene— showed him around, thehighlight being a visit to the

family farm in Ballance whereJens farmed from 1890-1897.

Bill and Ivan are secondcousins, the only two of theirgeneration still alive.

Ivan’s late wife, Frances, wasof Irish descent and the family islooking forward to meeting Irishcousins when they visit NewZealand.

BLUEBEAT REPORT WITH COMMUNITY CONSTABLE GRAEME JARVISA significantchange to thelawregardingchildrestraintscomes intoeffect fromNovember 1.

From thisdate, it willbe law for the

driver of a motor vehicle toensure a child under the age ofseven years is secured in anapproved child restraint.Previously the age limit was fiveyears.

Last week, several agencies, including police and Plunket, combined to stop vehicles toreinforce the message to driverswith younger children.

This message goes out to all

families with children under ageseven years but also to thecaregivers and grandparentswho are likely to carry youngerchildren. Free advice can besought by phoning Plunket on368-6762, or the TransportAgency on 0800 822 422.

Horrific crashThree local teenagers survived

a horrifying crash on the weekendand highlights why there are rulesfor all road users.

The teens were driving aroundthe district, ending up on Glad-stone Rd. The driver, age 16 , lostcontrol on gravel, skidded off theroad and landed upside down intrees suspended above the OhauRiver.

The occupants scrambled tosafety with minor grazes but policeat the scene say that if the vehicle

had not come to rest where it did, itwould certainly have crashed intothe river, with tragic results.

A crane was needed to lift thevehicle back on to the road. Thedriver will face charges of drinkdriving and careless driving.

Consequences for the girl, ifconvicted, could include restric-tions on international travel andjob prospects.

As a former police recruitingofficer, I know a conviction fordrink driving will certainly pre-vent her from joining the police.

I would like to make a smallcorrection to the details for theBluelight Pool Party, to be held atthe Levin Aquatic Centre tonight.

The doors open at 6pm, not 5.30,and will close at 8pm. Please notethe change of times for all thedrops-offs and pick-ups.

I have mentioned several times

during recent months the varietyand complexity of some scams andit appears a particularly nastyvirus and scam has come to lightagain.

It is a new variation on a scamusing the word UCASH. It will beobvious, as it locks the computerfrom further use and typicallyshows a warning demanding theuser pay a fine to unlock thecomputer. This is often referred toas Ransomware.

The latest virus uses the NewZealand Police logo, so naturally Iam upset some local people havecome to the police for help, think-ing police have something to dowith it.

I can categorically say policehave nothing to do with this virusand it is being used by theperpetrators to scare users intopaying to unlock their computer.

Be very careful which sites youelect to log into, as it appears adult-themed sites are being targeted.

What can you do to defendyourself in the first place?■ Install, update and use anti-virus software■ Back-up everything.■ Update everything.■ Health check your computer.■ Alert others to prevent moreattacks. If you are infected:■ Do not pay a ransom.■ If you can, make a report toNetSafe’s ORB website.■ Seek help.■ Clean the Ransomware if youare confident.■ Be prepared to wipe systemsand restore from back-ups.If you need further advice, you cancall police, Netsafe or ConsumerAffairs.

Time for a permanent homecreations, right down to the fully-operation chandeliers which grace thereplica of her grandmother’s home.

Now nearing 80 years old, Vernabelieves it’s time to find a permanenthome for her beautiful things. Shebelieves the place for them is Levin’sformer information centre at the Adven-ture Park.

‘‘I want them to go where everyone canenjoy them,’’ she said. ‘‘Mayor Duffycame to see my collection, I hope he wasimpressed enough to believe there is aplace for this in Levin.’’

The passion began when Verna wasgrowing up during the World War 2 era.Toys were not available and she realisedthe gift she had for creating them.

For many years Verna had a toyhospital and saved some very sorry cases.

‘‘This antique doll came in pieces, many of them missing,’’ Verna said. ‘‘Ihad to rebuild much of her.’’

Each item of the collection has a story. The entire Muppet crew was created in ahurry when Verna was asked to create adisplay for a show with a day’s notice. A

vintage baby doll was left in her carewhile the owner was on holiday but shenever returned.

‘‘I fixed her up and dressed her, they alldeserve to be loved,’’ she said. ‘‘If theowner returns she’ll be here waiting forher.’’

The Queen, complete with erminecloak and sceptre, surveys the kingdom ofToyland from her glass throne room.Verna made her the year The Queen wascrowned.

‘‘I love them all but I’m not going to behere for ever,’’ Verna said.

‘‘My niece suggested holding anauction, some of the old and rare toyswould be quite valuable but I wouldrather see them displayed and enjoyed inHorowhenua.’’

Her children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren have other interests.

‘‘I began making toys because when Iwas growing up during the war years youcouldn’t buy toys,’’ she said

. ‘‘Now toys are so available, they’renot as special as they used to be.’’

Verna’s toys are special, and alwayswill be, no matter where they finish up.

Import cuts savedNZ jobs and economy

lvn251013splhistory

END OF THE LINE: In 1986 a Labour Government closed Wanganui’s Eastown Railway workshops andmore than 400 jobs were lost to the local economy. (PHOTO COURTESY TE ARA ENCYCLOPEDIA OF NZ)

ByMICHAELDALLYand PEARL FORSTER

Seventy-five years ago, NewZealand saw an astonishingGeneral Election result that hasnever been repeated and isnever likely to be.

In 1938, Labour was returnedto the Government benches with53 MPs to National’s 25.

Since then, the emergence ofMMP and the ‘minor’ parties hasvirtually guaranteed no NewZealand Government will againwin more than double thenumber of seats its oppositionholds.

The 1938 result was all themore remarkable because of theway the election campaign wasfought. Voters had a clear choicebetween the socialist policiesLabour had successfullypromoted to counter the humancosts of the Great Depression, and the private enterprisealternative touted by National.

Today’s ‘spin doctors’ wouldno doubt reduce the terminologyto either, ‘‘The Nanny State’ orits counter, ‘The Trickle DownTheory’. Back then, though, public relations people weren’tused much, if at all; so 52.32 percent of those aged 21 and overwho were eligible to vote choseLabour. That’s another statisticwhich has never since beenrepeated.

Historians love a debate, andthe reasons for Labour’s unique1938 result are often aired, sometimes heatedly. Not sooften raised, though, is anotherlittle-known statistic; the nationwas almost broke.

Overseas reserves were downby over two-thirds — from £29million sterling to just £8

million — and they weredropping dramatically.

By December of that sameelection year, exchange controlshad to be introduced. What wasworse, Finance Minister WalterNash was forced to accept harshand humiliating terms inLondon from Britain’sConservative Governmentbefore a ‘rescue package’ ofloans was granted. What hadgone wrong?

Three years earlier, the 1935General Election result was seenby the incoming LabourGovernment as a mandate — ablank cheque — to take everyaction necessary to counter thedreadful human costs of theGreat Depression.

‘‘Chronic unemployment washere, health and housing werenowhere, crime, suicide anddivorce were everywhere.’’ Thatwas the catch-cry. Put verysimplistically, construction —especially of State Houses —created jobs. Unemploymentwent down, Government moneyfrom the resulting taxation wentto health (and hospitals) and so,a happier population was betterbehaved.

All this was working so wellthat, come the next GeneralElection the LabourGovernment received thatresounding result from voters. And with the coming of WorldWar II in 1939, New Zealandenjoyed an economic boom.Exports of meat, wool and dairyproducts accelerated. The cost ofthe 1935 Great depression‘‘recovery package’’ wasforgotten — almost.

Historians can be perhaps beforgiven for issuing remindersalong the lines of Edmund

Burke’s famous line, ‘‘Thosewho don’t know history aredestined to repeat it.’’ Buttoday’s high unemploymentfigures make for an interestingcomparison with 1938’s figures.

Back then, although fewknew it, the cost of fixing highunemployment was also high; 75years on, it still is. In 1938, fullemployment returned withrecord export sales. It hasn’ttoday and seems unlikely to beseen again in our time.

Statisticians say the wholeworld needs to work fast on asolution for the shrinking globaljob market.

Historians can pinpoint thereason behind the hugedifference for employment backthen — import controls. Nash’shumiliation in London came

with instructions to ‘‘examinelicenses for all imports’’, and soluxury items such as whisky, new cars, perfumes and LuckyStrike cigarettes became asscarce as the proverbial ‘‘hen’steeth’’.

New Zealand cars werepatched up, recycled, andreused. The country had the‘‘oldest fleet in the world’’, onetourist remarked.

The New Zealand garmentindustry flourished; everythingthat could be made domesticallywas — especially heavymachinery such as railwaylocomotives and carriages —imported beer was never seen, and New Zealand tobacco farmsboomed, too. No one, it seems, tried to make perfume buthosiery factories blossomed.

Today’s voters wouldn’tstand for it. In 1938, few felt theloss of imports (‘‘couldn’t affordthem, anyway’’); local jobs wereseen as a top priority.

Trying to re-introduce theHutt Valley’s car assembly lineswouldn’t make sense to voterstoday; neither would banningcontainers at our ports, orforcing industry to use railinstead of road transport.

As for ‘‘strictly limited salesonly’’ of colour televisions, laptop computers, Jim Beam orJohnny Walker — no politicianwould be so brave (or foolish) asto even hint at such things.

Historians may argue thatthis only leaves World War III asa way to economic recovery.Hopefully, though, that’s a non-starter too.

Top quality stock for Levin Spring Cattle FairBy FRANKIEWEBB

Top spring growing conditions werereflected in the quality of stock onoffer at the Levin Spring Cattle Fair.

Local support from both vendorsand purchasers didn’t go unnoticedby local Elders Agent Rhys Staples.

‘‘We’re really grateful to havetheir support,’’ Rhys said. ‘‘Thesesales have been established for over100 years, it’s only through localsupport they can carry on.Certainly stock numbers and buyernumbers are up on last year.’’

Shannon’s Geoff Kane receivedtop dollar for two year steers at$1150 per head.

‘‘Pretty much all the stock is intop condition,’’ Rhys commented.‘‘Weights are good, yearling heifershave been most sought after but themarket has been good across theboard.’’ Simmental/hereford crossyearling steers reached $880,fresian/hereford two year oldheifers were selling at around $900.

Agents from throughoutManawatu were out in force makinga number of purchases.

‘‘It isn’t just the small blockholders here today,’’ Rhys said. ‘‘Wehave representatives from a lot ofthe bigger properties too.’’

While some farmers criticise thelack of weighing facilities at theLevin Saleyards Rhys believes mostfarmers are happy to rely on oldschool methods.

‘‘When you’re looking at a beast, you either like what you see or youdon’t, and bid accordingly.’’

More than 95 per cent of stock onoffer met reserve.

‘‘The region needs thesesaleyards to continue, we’re reallypleased to see locals right behindthem,’’ Rhys said. Mixed sales areheld at the Levin Saleyards everyTuesday starting at 10.30am.

GET GOING: Rob Mason 34p got the big shove from 10p Josh Prentice and 581pJordan Dare in the first stockcar race of the night. PHOTO: SQUARE PHOTOGRAPHY

A huge number of stockcars turned outfor the second meeting of the year atPalmerston North Speedway.

For some, it was a successful night, with the Humphries father and son duohitting top gear.

Craig and William won two of thethree races each in the superstock andstockcar classes.

But for Levin driver, Craig Rolston No331, his bad luck continued. Afterblowing his engine in the last of thepractice nights, he arrived at the track onSaturday night ready to race — and racehe did until he got tangled up in trafficand copped three big hits. While the carsurvived Rolston, was taken toPalmerston North Hospital with afractured pelvis.

The crowd was again treated to somespectacular racing in all classes, with 17Superstocks rolling out the pit gate, including the much anticipated new cardebuts of 10p Peter Rees, 126p Asher Rees,

58p Peter Bengston and the V6-powered471p Benji Sneddon, along with visiting5s Nik Kiser from Stratford and 53v BobSmith from Wanganui.

But it was 98p Craig Humphries, whocomfortably showed a clean pair of heelsand won the first race from KenleyBrown in No 17p and 10p Peter Rees, whostarted from the back of the grid.

Rees showed how good his new car wasin the feature race and built a half laplead before a front tyre punctured and heretired, handing the win to a hard-charging Humphries.

Officials split the 52-strong stockcarfield into two groups, with two heatsallocated to each group. Again it was aHumphries, this time William in the NZ3car that dominated the first two heats, avoiding the carnage and picking up thechequered flag.

He joins his father at the top theseason points table in their respectiveclasses.

Jordan Dare 581p and 10p JoshPrentice got their season under way inthe right fashion, featuring in the top sixin both races.

The second group saw wins sharedbetween 509p Chris Knight and thelegendary 505p driven by Robert James, with 48p Damian Mulcahy, who had tosettle for second in his immaculate newtank after leading for much of the firstrace.

The feature race was full of action, with 33 cars on the starting grid but only12 reached the finish.

1nzp Peter Rees powered to victory, keeping clear of the mayhem eruptingaround the track.

In the sidecars, Mark Whye and JacobCooper on No 96p had the best of the 10starters, also split into two groups. One oftheir wins came after a last-corner passon 2nzp Richard and Alastair Horne, thepair came from fourth in the feature forsecond with a string of inside passes.Other races were won by 6p DerekRamsay and Tony Hislop, 42p Steve King

and Sam Carter and 19v John Hannanand Bryce Rose. The feature was won by5p Kieran Payne and Stu Elston, who gotin the groove at the right time.

A small minisprint field saw race winsshared between 1nzp Jamie Larsen, 4pKarl McGill and 8p Nathan Jefferies.

Track conditions far from suited the

solos with 11p Brady Mudgway notchingup two wins with 7p Graham Wedlakenotching up the other victory along withtwo second places.

Wellingtonian Josh Patterson 31wcontinued his good start to the youthministock season, scoring two wins and asecond to 99p James Mallia in the feature.

Relic of yesteryear in Foxton‘The first ship to use the portwas the Napier, which

unloaded general cargo.’By TONYHUNT

LVN120913FWHUNT

JOKE: Historian Tony Hunt’sprivate joke, he knows the woodenstructure behind him is a dolphinand not what most people expectwhen he asks if they’ve seen adolphin at Foxton.

PHOTO: FRANKIE WEBB

Foxton has a dolphin which fewpeople know about. The historicwooden structure, known as ‘TheDolphin’ was designed to deflectlogs from the wharf during floodsand at times used by ships to helpwhenmanoeuvring to headdownstream. Foxton’s dolphin(pictured) is believed to be theonly remaining one in NewZealand. The large wooden andsteel structure was constructedin 1910 and used in the days whenFoxton had a river port. Easternand Central Community Trusthave given a donation of $2000 tothe Foxton Historical Society forwork on the dolphin. Along withthe old Harbour Board shed, thedolphin is the only relic of theonce-thriving Foxton port.

The first wharf at Foxton was built forT U Cook who re-established histrading activities there when the 1855Wellington earthquake severelydamaged his post further upstream atPaiaka.

When the government began itsdevelopments at Foxton, they boughtCook’s wharf, which was fairlydilapidated.

Building a replacement began in1873 and a T-shape that ran out intodeeper water with a 12m frontage. Itwas located straight off the end ofWharf St (hence the name) where theSave The River group did somereclamation in the late 1980s.

The tramway was used to movegoods to and from the wharf and attimes the uphill slope proved difficult.

The first ship to use the port was theNapier, which unloaded a generalcargo and took on livestock andtimber. It wasn’t long before the wharfbecame congested and the rule wasmade that sailing ships had to move offif steamers wished to dock.

In 1878, it was decided to extend thewharf frontage 36m downstream, butthat proved too small.

Foxton had to compete withWanganui for trade as the railway wasextended from Palmerston North, through Feilding and on to Wanganuiby 1878.

In 1880, timber was still the mainexport but wool bales were steadilyincreasing.

In 1881, reclamation work wasbegun to not only enlarge the wharf butalso to shift the railway station andline to the riverbank.

New Zealand suffered a recession inthe 1880s and the twice-weekly servicesfrom Wellington by the Jane Douglaswere cut back much to the annoyance oflocals who considered starting theirown shipping line

The journey from the open sea to theport was often difficult.

First the bar at the river mouth hadto be negotiated and then sandbanksand logs in the river avoided.

To help the sailors, Captain Seaburywas appointed as the pilot and NicholasSciascia his assistant.

About 1910, two structures calleddolphins were placed to provideprotection for the fleet of small launchesused to tow punt loads of flax fromMoutoa to the Foxton flaxmills toprotect them from objects such as logsand berthing vessels. One hasdisappeared and the remaining one is inneed of stabilisation.

With the help from the FoxtonHistorical Society, grants from Easternand Central and Endeavour trusts havebeen awarded to go toward repair andprotection work.

In two months, New Zealand lost halfas many people to influenza as in theentire World War 1. Troops returnedfrom the Great War in October 1918bringing the virus with them and byDecember the death toll reached 8600.

Ettie’s great grandfather Te Korouwas instrumental in the settlement ofWairarapa.

‘‘My aunt and uncle were the onlyparents I knew and they were wonderfulpeople,’’ Ettie said.

She attended St Mary’s School,

unbeknown to her so did her futurehusband, Cliff Carmont. On August 10,1938 Ettie Ellers and Cliff Carmontwalked to St Mary’s Church in Foxton tobe married. They had met working at thewoolpack and textile factory, laterknown as the Feltex factory.

By the time World War 2 started, theCarmont’s son Alan had arrived. Cliffwas left at home because they weren’ttaking anyone with children at thattime.

‘‘He was told he was ‘indispensable’

working at the factory making mattingfor the soldiers,’’ Ettie said.

He joined the local Home Guard buteventually got called up for overseasservice but luckily the war endedbefore he left.

In 1940, the Carmonts bought a housein Foxton’s Thynne St where Ettie stilllives. The couple has five daughters anda son and spent 68 wonderful yearstogether before Cliff died in 2007 aged90. Family members visit Ettie, travelling from as far away as Canada.

The Hub would like to introduceDeborah Loveridge who is nowworking alongside Jacinta Liddellas Joint Project Leader. InitiallyDeborah will be focussing onconnecting with local Dads.

Deborah comes from abackground of Early ChildhoodEducation and Social Work and, most importantly, as a mum of3 daughters now in their teens, knows first hand the challengesof parenting, especially parentingchildren from 0 to 6 years of age.She is particularly passionateabout encouraging and supportingparents through those first fewformative years of a child’s life.

As a Hub we have an awesomeopportunity to put in place somenew projects to support dads. Thishas been made possible by someSKIP funding and follows on fromthe work of the Young Parent PeerSupport team last year. Why Dad’s

you may ask? When talking aboutparenting all too often we neglectto acknowledge the importanceof the role of Dad’s in a child’s lifeparticularly in the early childhoodyears. Even if your own experienceof your dad was not a positiveone it is not too late to rewritea different story for your ownchildren.

If you have an interest insupporting other dads or simplyare a dad and want to connectwith other fathers we welcomeyour input into this exciting newinitiative. WALLY RICHARDS

WEEKENDWORK■ Gardeners should have been busythis month, and their gardens shouldbe reflecting this.■ Mulching should be the order of theday wherever possible. As well asretaining moisture, mulching keepsdownweeds.■ Apply fertilisers first andmake surethe soil is moist before the mulch goeson by giving a heavy watering.■ Look after seedlings being raisedfor a summer display during thesummer holidays, make sure they havewater.■ And try to provide some shelterfrom equinoctial gales which candestroy a planting of young seedlingsin a short time.

PREVENTION BETTER THAN CURE: Spotting aphids early will help prevent theirnumbers increasing.

Being a good spotter is half the battle insolving gardening problems.

Gardeners who keep their eyes open asthey go around their gardens can spotproblems as they unfold.

One of the best times to do this is whenyou are handwatering plants with a softshower wand. While the right hand isholding the hose, you can fold back leaveswith your left and check for pests orproblems.

Some problems are seasonal and comein cycles and knowing the cycles alsohelps you to be on the watch for them.

Aphids are in season and they can befound on your roses and some otherplants.

On the roses, they will be around thenew growths and the flower buds. If youjust leave them, their populations willquickly increase and this will likelydiminish the flowering display.

Aphids suck the sap of the plants andin doing so remove the plant’s energyresulting in poorer growth, twistedleaves and damaged flowers.

They are not hard to kill and if youonly have a few roses you may simply runyour fingers over the pests and gentlysquash them without harming the plant.

For those with a lot of roses, it is betterto use a safe spray to knock them over, such as Key Pyrethrum.

Use it just before dusk. Make up sayfive litres of spray using 5ml of KeyPyrethrum, 25ml of Neem Tree Oil and50ml of Magic Botanic Liquid (MBL). Thepyrethrum is a quick knock down thatshould kill most of the aphids within aday. The Neem Tree Oil will aid in thecontrol of any missed, or new aphidsarriving during the next seven or so days.

This natural oil will also aid in thereduction of diseases such as black spot, rust and mildews. The MBL will alsoassist in keeping the roses free ofdiseases, supply extra minerals to thefoliage and aid in the health of the plants.

The reason for spraying near dusk isthat pyrethrum is quickly broken downby UV — in fact within a couple of hours— if sprayed earlier in the day. At dusk, itis going to be active all night till the nextday.

Now your roses are coming into budand flower, start applying about ateaspoon of Fruit and Flower Powerevery four to six weeks. The potassiumaids in flowering and the magnesium aidsthe deep green of the foliage. In fact anyother plants that are coming intoflowering, or setting fruit, will do better

with a small regular dose of thetwo minerals.

Stone fruit trees will likelyhave distorted leaves unlessyou have been vigilant withyour spraying of Liquid Copperand Raingard. The curly leavesare the effects of the commondisease Curly Leaf, and everyleaf that is damaged means oneless leaf for the tree to gainenergy from the sun.

The damaged or curly leaveswill later fall off the tree, leaving only the leaves that are

not affected.Leaf loss means a smaller crop and

maybe smaller fruit as well. You canoffset some of the damage by spraying thegood leaves with Vaporgard.

Vaporgard acts as a sun screenreducing the UV levels which affect theplant’s ability to produce energy from thesun. One spray lasts about three monthson the foliage sprayed. Within a couple ofdays of spraying, you will notice theleaves turning a rich dark green whichmeans each leaf is working at fullcapacity, gaining energy.

Some gardeners like to sprayVaporgard on to the foliage of their rosesto deepen the green colour and place along-term shine to the leaves. It alsomeans your roses will be more vigorousand flower better.

One point to mention is that the filmVaporgard puts over the foliage makes itdifficult for sprays such as Perkfection toenter the plant. To get around this addRaingard to the sprays.

Tomatoes will be doing well if in asheltered, sunny spot. Those out in theopen will be much slower to grow becauseof the weather and cold snaps.

I have kept my tomato plants incontainers in the glasshouse, waiting forthe weather to settle before starting toput them outdoors. When I decide it’stime to put them out I will, a couple ofdays before hand, give them a spray allover with Vaporgard. This hardens theplants up and stops any transplant shock.

Tomatoes in containers must be givenadequate water to prevent the compostfrom drying out, if not you will getblossom end rot which is that black patchon the bottom of the fruit.

Removing laterals on tomatoes canallow diseases to enter the plant, whichwill often result in losses.

If botrytis enters the tomato whereyou remove a lateral or leaf, then it willcause a rotting on a branch or on thetrunk. The plant begins to wilt and thewilting progressively gets worse until abranch or the whole plant is lost.

There are two rules you must followwhen removing laterals (side shoots) orleaves — do not do so when the air ismoist as moist air carries the diseasespores. Next, as soon as you remove alateral, spray the damaged area with asquirt of Liquid Copper.

You can make up the copper in a smalltrigger sprayer and as long as you give ita good shake before using each time itwill keep well.

Oxalis is a curse for many gardenersand it is about this time of the year thatthe weed comes away.

A safe and cheap spray to use is bakingsoda at the rate of a good tablespoon fullper litre of warm water. Stir a little untilthe mix stops bubbling and then add 1mlof Raingard per litre.

Spray over the oxalis foliage, but itonly works well when the soil is on thedry side and during a warm to hot sunnyday. The oxalis leaves will dehydrate butother plants sprayed will not be harmed.

The first spray will remove the oxalisfoliage but will not harm the bulbs. Morefoliage will appear and soon as it doesrepeat spray. After a few sprays the bulbsrun out of energy as they have beendenied leaves and then the bulbs fail.

In the meantime do not work the soil, instead cover the soil with compost andplant any new plants into the compost.Over time you will be free of the weed.

Strawberries planted in winter shouldbe doing well and if they are first yearplants — still a bit on the small size — youshould remove some of the early flowersso the plants can grow bigger before youlet them fruit. Spray the strawberryplants fortnightly or so with Mycorrcin.

This simple, natural spray feeds thebeneficial microbes, which will not onlykeep the plants healthy but can increaseyour crop yield by 200 to 400 per cent.

I had one gardener ring me a few yearsago and tell of his successes. He had twobeds of strawberries, one he sprayedregularly with Mycorrcin, the other hedidn’t. In all other respects the two bedswere treated the same.

The gardener reported the difference

was outstanding. The Mycorrcin-treatedbed produced masses of big, sweetstrawberries where the other bed was thenormal so-so crop. He said if he had notdone the trial with the two beds he wouldnot have believed the possible difference.

As I often say, when you work withnature you get the results, when you tryto work against nature with harmfulchemical fertilisers and sprays, all youhave is problems.

B G BuckexpandserviceB G Buck Ltd, your well-knownelectrical contractors, have expanded tooffer a further service into the field ofcommercial refrigeration.

Manager Barrie Buck says during his50 years in business, this has alwaysbeen an area of interest but he has beentoo busy within the electrical side of thebusiness to fully commit into otherareas.

Being involved with the supply, installation and servicing of severalmanufacturers of heat pumps and withextra staff who have expertise incommercial refrigeration, it makes goodbusiness sense to run them together.

Barrie says their extra advantagesare having a fully-equipped workshop, the ability to manufacture their owncontrol equipment to each client’srequirements and to fully install.

So B G Buck Ltd is really a one-stopshop from advice and manufacture toinstallation.

Barrie also points out the company’spolicy on training and keeping ahead ofan ever-changing industry of productsand technology, together with theirstaff’s dedication and enthusiasm toclients needs.

B G Buck also offers a full back-upand breakdown service.

Policewarn farmersafter cattle theftsShannon Police are warningfarmers to be vigilant oftheir cattle after a spate ofthefts over the past month.

Constable Charlie Ruddsaid three thefts haveoccurred from farms in theShannon area.

‘‘A total of 18 Friesiancalves have been taken frompaddocks at three differentfarms over the period of amonth. Six calves have beentaken each time and webelieve the offenders haveused a trailer.

‘‘The calves are relativelysmall and docile and theoffenders may have lifted thecalves out of their fenced

paddock and herded theminto the trailer beforeleaving the scene. We arekeen to speak to anyone thatmay have some informationabout these thefts,’’ said MrRudd.

Police also believe thatthere may be other cattlethefts which have goneunreported.

‘‘I encourage residents inthe area to keep a watchfuleye on their cattle andproperty as well as theirneighbours. Make suregates, fences, and sheds aresecure and cows havetracking tags which areclearly marked.

‘‘Rural residents lookoutfor each other and anyonethat sees suspiciousbehaviour should contacttheir local police station orcall 111.

‘‘We appreciate it whenpeople call about things thatare not quite right in theircommunity. If you have a gutfeeling that something iswrong, then it probably is,’’says Mr Rudd.

■ If anyone has any informationabout these thefts please contactConstable Rudd on (06) 3629780. Alternatively, informationcan be provided anonymously viaCrimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
