LVN010814jimread

COLOURS of an autumn sky complement the outline of Mt Taranaki as seen by Jim Read at the Foxton Surf Lifesaving Club andcaptured on his Olympus PM-2. Mr Read used a 40-150mm lense to catch this artistic moment in time. A few moments later theclouds had rolled in and the scene was lost.

Unrelenting negativityThe chair of Horowhenua Ratepayers

Association just cannot resist anyopportunity to insult, slur and malign the(Horowhenua) District Council. His latestletter about the passing of a rates remissionpolicy is a case in point.

“Things backfired on the HDC money-grab rezoning plan” he states. Untrue. There was NO money grab re zoning plan.Extra rates was never the intention behindzoning changes to the District Plan.

Council instituted the plan change togive guidance on where ideally certaintypes of housing growth could occur overthe next 20 years. The change was widelyconsulted on and certainly no councillorexpected any sudden windfall of extra rateswhen the use of land was unchanged. Wewere all surprised when Valuation NewZealand, independently of Council, hugely

increased the value of a comparativelysmall number of properties based on whatthey might be worth one day if sold forredevelopment. Property owners were thenupset at the prospect of substantial ratesincreases. Council managers andcouncillors realised immediately the basicunfairness of the situation and started aprocess of passing a new rates remissionpolicy. The intent is no land owner unfairlyimpacted upon by a revaluation due to re-zoning should pay more rates than wouldhave paid without rezoning. That is a fairand equitable solution to a situation not ofCouncil’s making, for which I am sure thesmall number of property owners aregrateful. They spoke, we listened, we didsomething about it. The problem of MrThomson’s unrelenting negativity with allits rudeness is that it turns people off.

TALK TO BOOST KITCHEN FUNDBy PETER FRANKLIN

A fundraising event at FoxtonBeach School will have big benefitsfor the local community in the caseof a natural disaster.

On Saturday the school hasarranged to have ITM Fishingshow’s Matt Watson do apresentation on his favouritesubject fishing.

The fundraising event will helpfund the upgrade to the school hallkitchen, that doubles up as a civildefence centre for the beach side

community.Horowhenua District

Councillor and Horizons regionalcouncil emergency managementofficer Ross Brannigan said,Foxton Beach School is an integralpart of emergency planning forFoxton Beach.

He said the Schools play animportant part in emergencyplanning right across the country, especially in smaller communitiessuch as Foxton Beach.

“Local people generally have anaffinity with their local school and

schools are well resourced andhave ideal facilities to be utilisedas a Civil Defence centre during anemergency event and FoxtonBeach School certainly ticks all ofthose boxes.” Mr Brannigan said.

In terms of numbers we arevery confident that the school, as aCivil Defence Centre, could catervery well for the numbers of peoplewe would expect to arrive there asresult of a disaster impacting onthe area, and a kitchen of thenature being planned at the schoolwould enhance the service that

could be provided to evacuee’sduring such an event.

“I sincerely hope the localcommunity supports the SchoolsHome and School s Association’sfundraiser this weekend as it isimportant for the school and widercommunity to improve facilitieswe do have,” Mr Brannigan said.

Tickets for the Matt Watsonpresentation are available atFoxton Beach School, this is an R18event. The event starts at 6pm withMr Watson’s presentation startingat 7pm.

WORLD WAR 1 CENTENARY July 28, 1914 - November 11, 1918

Warpoet foundhonourintrenchesofblood

Wilfred Owen’s death, like his poems, captured the pity of war.JohnWalsh charts his journey from innocence to iconic status. It was a hell of a learning curve. In 1914, just after the outbreak of war,Wilfred Owenwrote a poem called The Ballad of Purchase-Money

IT endedwith a passionaterejection of the sentiment(from the Latin poet Horace)that there is anything sweet

or honourable about dying foryour country.Wilfred Owen’sdark journey from naivety todisgust produced the war’s mostfamous literary effusion. And, bya terrible irony, its author diedjust as the conflict ended.Owenwas the son of an

Oswestry railwaysuperintendent. He wasschooled at Birkenhead andShrewsbury and, from an earlyage, was nuts about poetry. Herevered Keats, visited thehouses in which the veneratedpoet had lived, modelled hisverse on his lush and clottedsensuality, and shared hisfascination with death. LikeKeats, he was to die aged 25.Owenwas in France when

war broke out, teaching English.According to his biographer, JonStallworthy: “His letters of thisperiod show no great interest inthe progress, or lack of progress,in theWar, except insofar as itaffected the crossing of theChannel.”But gradually a yearning to

take arms settled upon him.“I don’t want to wear khaki,”

he wrote to his mother, “nor yetto savemy honour beforeinquisitive grandchildren 50years hence. But I now domostintensely want to fight.”On October 21, 1915, Owen

was sworn into the Artists’Rifles and inMay 1916 hebecame 2nd Lieutenant in the5th Battalion of theManchesterRegiment. He left Dover on December

29. In January, he found himselfin the stinking quagmire of theSomme, half-drowning inmud, deafened by artillery, crippledby dysentery, freezing, starving, blitzed and haunted.

“Weweremarooned on afrozen desert,” he wrote. “Thereis not a sign of life on the horizonand a thousand signs of death.”Owenwas hospitalised after

falling down awell. When herejoined his battalion inMay, hisCO noticed hewas shaky, tremulous, confused inmemoryand unable to command. Owentold his sister it wasn’t abreakdown: “You know, it wasnot the Bosche that workedme

up, nor the explosives, but it wasliving so long by poor old CockRobin (as we used to call 2ndLieutenant Gaukroger) who laynot only nearby, but in variousplaces around and about, if youunderstand.”Traumatised by exploded

limbs, he was sent home toSouthampton then toCraiglockhartWar Hospital inEdinburgh, a forbidding, gloomykeep, for “special observation

and treatment”. Nobody couldhave predicted what followed: afour-month period of calm andfulfilment. At Craiglockhart, despite the

nightly screaming of shell-shockedmen remembering thekilling fields of Beaumont-Hameland St Quentin, Owen came intohis own. Hemet SiegfriedSassoon, themost importantfriendship of his life, and RobertGraves, who proved to be auseful irritant. Owen’s poetryacquired a newly direct, scornful, challenging voice.Helped by his new friends, he

was published in nationalmagazines. He drank inEdinburgh pubs. Hemet ArnoldBennett and H.G.Wells inliterary London. He felt his lifewas happily under way.“I am a poet’s poet,” he told

his mother. “I am started. Thetugs have left me; I feel the greatswelling of the open sea takingmy galleon.”It wasn’t, however, enough. A

stronger impulse nagged at hisconscience. He had to go back tothe war, and bewith themen towhom he could give a voice.“I know I shall be killed,” he

told his brother Harold. “But it’sthe only place I canmakemyprotest from.”On September 1, 1918, he

landed at Etaples, just asLudendorff’s army ceased theiradvance on Paris and fell backacross theMarne. Owen’s lastletters to his mother show him inhigh spirits as he describes hiscomrades-in-arms and the localFrench girls’ gratitude for “LaDeliverance”. Hemodestlyrecords that his bravery incapturing an enemymachine-gunmay havewon him aMilitary Cross (which hewasduly awarded). A curious elationthat’s well beyond sympathywith doomed soldiers can beheard in his finalpronouncements.“My nerves are in perfect

order. I came out in order to helpthese boys directly by leadingthem aswell as an officer can;indirectly, by watching theirsufferings that I may speak ofthem aswell as a leader can. Ihave done the first.”The end came soon. On the

night of November 3, the 2nd

Manchesters joined a vitalattack over the Sambre-Oisecanal. At 5.45am, an artillerybarrage crashed down, andwhen it ended Owen led hisplatoon to the towpath. Theyfound the far bank stutteringwith German tracer fire. As theRoyal Engineers struggled toconstruct amakeshift bridge,Owen steadied his menwithwords of encouragement.Minutes later, he was killed by aGerman bullet.Aweek later, the war was

over. All was finally quiet on theWestern Front. AndWilfredOwen, the poet whomosteffectively voiced the truesavagery of the FirstWorldWar, had become one of its finalcasualties. As his parents answered the

door to a telegram from theBritish Army, the Armisticebells were ringing their cheerfulchime of peace. — Independent

OWEN’S POEM“O meet it is and passingsweetTo live in peace withothers,But sweeter still and farmoremeetTo die in war for brothers.”Three years later, thatnaive “meet and sweet”sentiment appeared, thistime in its original Latinform “Dulce et decorumest pro patria mori” as thetitle of a very differentpoem, which began:“Bent double, like oldbeggarsunder sacks,Knock-kneed, coughinglikehags, we cursed throughsludge,Till on the haunting flaresweturned our backsAnd towards our distantrestbegan to trudge.Men marched asleep. Manyhad lost their bootsBut limped on, blood-shod.All went lame; all blind...”

WORLD WAR 1 CENTENARY July 28, 1914 - November 11, 1918

Fear,deathandfutility

Living in thetrenches waslike beingstuck in anightmare, sayFran BlandyandPierreMarie Giraud

For three years duringWorldWar I, millions ofsoldiers holed up in awarren of trenches,

fighting and dying innightmarish conditions along abarelymoving frontline. For the French, British,

Germans, Anzacs and otherscaught in this futile fight, therain, biting cold and thickmud, the awful stench of death andscourge of rats would haunttheir daily lives asmuch as theconstant onslaught from theenemy.“When the world is red and

reeking, and the shrapnel shellsare shrieking, and your blood isslowly leaking, carry on,” urgedone of the GreatWar’s soldierpoets Geoffrey StuddertKennedy, nicknamed“Woodbine Billy”, whochronicled the horrors of thetrenches.“When the broken battered

trenches, are like the bloodybutchers’ benches, and the air isthick with stenches, carry on.”In the summer of 1914

soldiers had set out for a swiftwar, but after several mobileand extremely bloodymonths, rival armies decimated byartillery fire found themselveslocked in a stalemate along thebattle’sWestern Front. To better protect themselves,

soldiers burrowed a line oftrenches that stretched for700km from the North Seathrough France to Switzerland, where both sides would dig infor three years, sufferingcrippling losses butmaking littleheadway. The first trenches were

hastily dug, often shallow holes, becoming deeper andmoreelaborate as the stalematedragged on. Theywere dug in azigzag so that if an enemysoldier got in he could not openfire along the whole length of the

trench.Fields of barbedwire

surrounded the ditches, aimed atslowing any advance through“noman’s land”— the areabetween enemy lines that wassometimes only a few dozenmetres.Thewarren of trenches

usually included a frontline, areserve line and a support line, which soldiers would rotatethrough, usually spending onlydays at a time at the front.Either way, daily life in the

unhygienic trenches wasmiserable.Heavy rain flooded the

trenches, needing to be scoopedout at downtimes.Wallscollapsed in amuddymess thatwould freeze in the thick ofwinter andmademoving aroundwith heavy arms and equipmenta terrible ordeal.Toilets were improvised in

the trench— going outside leftyou open to attack— andwithnomeans to wash, and garbageand dead bodies piling up in andaround the ditch, the stenchcould be overpowering.“The rank stench of those

bodies hauntsme still, and Iremember things I’d bestforget,” wrote English poetSiegfried Sassoon, who foughton theWestern Front.Soldiers also had to deal with

the scourge of multiplying ratswhowould feed off these bodiesas well as lice and flies. If this wasn’t enough to drive

entrenched soldiers to the brinkof sanity, the constant fear ofdeath certainly was.Barrages of artillery fire and

explosions in the trenches andconstant sniper fire gave rise tothe term shell-shock, the traumaandmental breakdown sufferedbymany soldiers on theWestern Front.“I knew a simple soldier boy,

who grinned at life in empty joy.

In winter trenches, cowed andglum, with crumps and lice andlack of rum, he put a bulletthrough his brain. No one spokeof him again,” wrote Sassoon inthe grimly entitled poem Suicidein the trenches.Food often arrived cold, while

breadwas frozen ormouldy. ForFrench soldiers, it was theirdaily litre of red wine andcigarettes that helped ease themthrough the day.Mornings for both sides

beganwith a pre-dawn “stand toarms” wheremenwould climbup on the fire-step, rifle andbayonet at the ready in case of adawn raid. After an inspection, breakfast

would be eaten during anunofficial truce between the twosides, one of several such tacit“live and let live” agreements onthe frontline.Although the threat of danger

was never far, attacks weremost likely to take place at nightso days were dedicated torepairing the trenches and othervital jobs.In quiet times, soldiers

passed the time tinkering withwhatever they could lay theirhands on—wood, scrap fabricor bullet casings— to cobbletogether lamps, pipes, jewels orevenmusical instruments.Letter writing and reading

was a lifeline, with 10 billionletters and packages exchangedduring the conflict, althoughmany tried to hide the horror oftheir daily lives from loved ones.Nighttime brought raids,

transfers of supplies andmovement of troops between thetrenches.“The air is loudwith death,

The dark air spurts with fire,The explosions ceaseless are,”wrote another war poet, IsaacRosenberg, killed in 1918, in thechilling Dead Man’s Dump.

Stretcher-bearersbecameunshockable,as JennyTabakoffexplains

Shattered bodies ahorror seen every day

What was it like forthemenwho riskedtheir lives inWorldWar I but could not

reach for a gun even if theywanted to?Stretcher-bearers played a

vital role on theWestern Front, carrying woundedmen back tocasualty posts.Private Henry Edgar (Harry)

Abbott, of the 10th FieldAmbulance, wrote a letter inautumn 1917 that reveals what astretcher-bearer’s life was likeduring the Anzac troops’ run ofbattles in the second half of 1917.Abbott’s family in Katinning,

Western Australia, passed it totheir local newspaper, The GreatSouthern Herald, which printedit in January 1918.The 29-year-old had been on

theWestern Front for about ayear when hewrote home daysbefore the Battle ofPasschendaele.“I have just been reflecting

howwonderfully different I feelthis time to the periodimmediately preceding the firsttime I went up to the trenches,”Abbott wrote.“Then, I was almost sick with

anxiety. I feared I might havesome task set me that I wouldn’tbe able to do; or some eventmight happenwhich I would nothave the strength to face— anda thousand other fears thatproved ridiculous andunnecessary whenwe got there.“This time I am free from

every trace of such qualms, and Iam feeling almost anxious to getthere.”After six weeks in the Pas de

Calais countryside, helping tobring in a harvest for localfarmers, the 10th FieldAmbulancemarched for fivedays into Belgium, passingthrough a big town (probablyYpres) and its shatteredcathedral.“Just after dawnwe got

orders to go up to one of thecollecting points and commenceour bearing. The roar neverslackened all that day northrough the following night. Aswewalked up, the skywas full ofbright flashes, and our earsthrobbedwith the roar.

“This last affair waspositively unapproachable,”Abbott wrote, adding thatcountless dead bodies from “allthe big fighting of several weeksago” had been strewn around.“I never imagined anything

like it, and I dare not evenattempt to give you an outline. But the strange thing about itwas this personal experiencethat neither I, nor any of mymates, seemed to have anycapacity for being shocked. Thesmells, alone, made anyimpression on us, and that is athing one never gets used to.”Yet even amid the carnage,

Abbott says he and his mate

were so ‘‘devilised’’ at the end oftheir busy day that they fellupon a dinner of cold stewedbeans, pork and bully beef.“We both thought it a fine

feast; but remember, wewerestarving. At our feet, on twostretchers, were themangledcorpses of two of ourmen.“Don’t think us utterly

beyond hope. There were deadall round us, and it was only oneminute detail of the wholepiece.”The road had been “just one

hugemass of traffic”, and onseveral occasions “Fritz sentover shells and shrapnel” intothe crowd of trucks, people,

prisoners and cars, causinghavoc.“Once I saw two badly

woundedmen— one anAustralian and the other aGerman—walking painfullydown the roadwith their armsaround each other, and eachsmoking a stumpy pipe.”German prisoners were put

to work as stretcher-bearers:“Often I have seen four Fritzscarrying a stretcher down bythemselves, and awoundedAustralian on it. I used to thinkat first I wouldn’t care to be inthe patient’s position, but theyproved, without exception, thattheywere to be trusted.”Abbott sensed victory was

not far off, and praised thebombardmentsmade by BritishandAustralian artillery beforeevery advance.“It is good to be deafened by

that mighty roar of thunderingguns; and although I will neverbe a soldier, I felt a certainmadexultation as I listened to thebellow of their mighty ironthroats on that first morning ofthe battle.”Abbott hoped that,

underlying the carnage, therewas “some great and terriblemeaning that we are too weakand too blind to see; but someday I am sure wewill see that allthe horror and suffering anddeath in this mad game is but thematerial for the foundation ofthe newer and better worldwhichmust spring up out of theruins of these days”.He said he was “not

pessimistic, but verymuch theother way” and “still confidentthat I am coming home again”.“But still, in finishing this

letter, I can hardly refrain fromasking you to dome the honourof not fretting if I should draw anunlucky number in this nextshuffle. I have grown to regarddeath with as little dread assleep. At times I have almostenvied those who are taken outof it.”Henry Abbott was killed in

action on October 12, 1917 and, like somany others who fellaround Passchendaele, has noknown grave. His is one of about 6000 Anzac

names listed on theMenin Gatememorial. — AAP

Starting with a bare stage, under the guise of tidying the theatre’s storeof props and costumes, the characters accidentally build the set of adrawing-room murder mystery, and Phyllis’s daydream of being the Ladyof the Manor suddenly comes to life as a period drama, until the spell isbroken, leaving Phyllis with new insights into her life.

The production is full of twists and turns, with the characters playingdual roles. It is a play within a play with a delightful comedy threadrunning through it, with a clear message at the end.
