Council shuffleIn regard to the committee reshuffle in theHorowhenua District Council and therefusal of speaking rights at the recentcouncil meeting I believe that councillorsFeyen and Campbell were elected to repre-sent their communities and should be able todo so.

I also believe that the community shouldbe able to speak at council meetings if theyare concerned about decisions being madewithin the Horowhenua council that affectcouncillor’s input on committees.

It is worrying that according to themayor of the HDC, speaker’s rights are onlyavailable on topics where speakers are seen

to be able to influence councillors’ opinions.Yet in the same breath he is quoted as

saying that if any councillors disagreed withthe statement that Feyen and Campbelldidn’t have the trust or confidence of theircouncil colleagues they could have spokenup at the council meeting.

Were all councillors consulted before themeeting about the committee reshuffles orwas this thrust upon them at the councilmeeting? Were they given the opportunity tovoice their concerns to the mayor before thecouncil meeting?

I do not agree that committees are apolitical issue and not one for the public todebate. Surely it is of public interest that theright people are selected for the right job.

The work performed by the committeesof the HDC has an effect on the Horowhenuacommunity and hence the ratepayers whoelect the councillors.

The HDC does need to be seen as ademocratic body which represents theinterests of the Horowhenua. By notallowing public debate at council meetingsthe HDC is effectively silencing its criticsand creating an unhealthy atmosphere ofdisquiet with council’s performance.

MARGARET JEUNELevin

Rates owedI read that $2.2m is owing to the council forrates. It continues – “Payment Options” –“Direct Debit” – “A range of options”. It isnot that there are insufficient ways ofpaying but it is the amount that is theproblem. More so if one loses their job. I doworry that such a situation will becomemore likely in the future.

My total rates increased by $189 but therates rebate scheme increased by only $15.

People can only pay such increasingrates figures by foregoing other items theymay prefer, or simple pleasures. Council-lors don’t consider us when setting rateslevels for what they decide to spend.

“Raffle money was forOhau Playcentre, so it is agood cause.”

Diversion schemes aimto educate road userswith GRAEME JARVISCommunity Constable

Police officersstrive to make adifference in theircommunitiesevery day, andsurprisinglydealing withoffenders is only asmall part of therole.

The Neighbourhood Policing Team(NPT) based in Levin South is currentlyrunning several initiatives, particularlyaround driver education.

The first of these initiatives followsthe very successful role out of a campaignearlier this year to help educate drivers, and runs along similar lines to policediversion, offered most often to first timeoffenders in the criminal courts.

Drivers stopped for traffic offences, such as having no driver’s licence, ordriving on a learner’s licenceunaccompanied, and many others, can beeligible for a driver education course tobe run at Taitoko School later this month.Successful completion of the course willmean that the traffic tickets areeffectively waived.

Drivers unfortunate enough to bestopped by police over the next few weekswill be told if their particularinfringement qualifies for the diversionscheme, and then it will be up to thedriver to decide if they want to partake.

The second programme is being runalong similar lines and will assist driversto pass through the various stages of thegraduated driver licence process. Policeare working with various agencies tohelp new drivers that might requireliteracy assistance, funding or practicaldriving instruction. This initiative has

been put in place to assist a new driverthrough the licence process, and ties inwith a law change that will come intoeffect on December 1.

The law change will require all newdrivers to be at the full licence stagewithin five years.

New drivers or anyone consideringbeginning the licence process can fill outan assessment form from the NPT base inKinross Street.

This Sunday sees the kid’s Kite Day atSolway Park. The day begins at 11am andwill run to 2pm. Take the kids along andhelp them make and fly their kites. Allmaterials will be supplied. This fun day isdesigned for families to have an outingtogether, make a kite and get it flying.

Despite all the very positive thingshappening in our community, there arestill those around us who are doing theirbest to wreck things.

We still have a person or personscommitting burglaries in the north westarea of Levin. This block, boundedroughly by Queen, Weraroa, Tiro Tiroand Read Streets, has seen a number ofbreak-ins over recent weeks. Food andelectrical items have been stolen, and theoffender has been prepared to break intohomes to gain entry.

The one common theme in most ofthese events is that they are happening inthe early evening.

Police urge everyone, but particularlyresidents in the area mentioned, to takeparticular care if going out in theevening, or for those that are also awayduring the day and won't be home untillater at night.

Lock everything but make an attemptto make it look like you are home. Leavelights on, perhaps the television or radiogoing, and if there is a spare car, leave itvisible in the driveway and, of course, locked up.

Fire safety reminders forbarbecues, fireworksBy PETER FRANKLIN

Fire safety continues with theseasonal change, volunteerfirefighters around the districtare urging people to turn theirfocus from winter safety tosummer fire risks and take theappropriate action to minimisethe risks.

Levin Volunteer FireBrigade Chief Officer LindsayWalker says now that theweather is changing, peoplestart to think about barbecues

and, at the start of November,Guy Fawkes night on the 5th.

Mr Walker said there werefire prevention measures thatpeople should be looking atnow.

Barbecues should have beencleaned of excess oils andgrease before they were putaway from last summer.

Gas bottles, hoses andconnections should be checkedand repaired if necessary.

Long grass around fencelines and buildings should be

cut, the last thing anyone needsis, while enjoying a barbecueor fireworks, to set the grass onfire, which will spread quickly.

Mr Walker said withbarbecues or fireworks, ensurethat there is a bucket of coldwater on standby for anyonegetting burnt by sparks or hotfats, and a garden hoseattached to an outside tapready to turn on if necessary.

“It would also be wise tohave a look at your first aid kitand make sure that it has

everything needed in case of anemergency,” he said.

Another thing to remember,Mr Walker says, is that allbeaches in Horowhenua arefire-free, which means no oneis allowed to start a fire on thebeach and that extends threekilometres from the tide markinland. “Let’s all enjoy thissummer, remember drunkcooks are a danger, fire worksshould be lit well away frompeople and be considerate ofanimals,” he said.

HEADS UP AT HOROWHENUA COLLEGE

LVN171014splcongdon2

KAPA Haka students from Horowhenua College performed a Haka Powhiri onMonday for their new principal Grant Congdon, wearing the korowai presented tohim by his former Ashburton team as a parting gift, and Tipene Philip, Head of Maoriat Ashburton and Kaumatua of Hakatere Marae.

Community has role to playwith principal GRANTCONGDON

On Monday I was welcomed into theposition of principal – tumuaki atHorowhenua College.

Present at the powhiri along with ourstudents and staff were representativesfrom Muaupoko as well as other schools, businesses and organisations in ourcommunity. I was humbled by theattendance of so many and greatlyappreciate the genuine welcome shown tomy family and me, as well as to those fromAshburton who supported me.

After the powhiri I took theopportunity to explain my approach to therole of principal. This is best explained bythe whakataukı: “Ehara taku toa i te toatakitahi, engari he toa takitini”. Thisstates “Success is not the work of one butthe work of many”.

I used this whakataukı to explain thatfor our youth to achieve their goals andreach their potential, our wholecommunity is needed to actively

participate in the process. Each studentneeds to work very hard. We, as collegestaff, will be working with our students ona day to day basis and doing our utmost toprovide the best learning opportunitiesfor them.

Parents/caregivers and whanau havea vital role in supporting and encouragingtheir students. The whole community isalso significant in supporting our youth.Education is developing in such a waythat many learning opportunities are ableto take place outside the college gates. Iknow there are already significantopportunities that students are engagedwith and enjoying very good success.

Thank you for your involvement withour youth and your participation in theirlearning.

Success is not the work of one but thework of many. I look forward to workingwith the whole community so thattogether we can participate in the processof seeing our youth achieve their goalsand reach their potential.

WAIOPEHU Women’s Institute membersMargaret Woodgyer and Ann Colling saidthey had been quite busy during the day.

Organisers of the Age on the Go Expo inLevin can relax after what visitors to theexpo said was the best to date.

Local organisations and businesseswere set up in the Salvation Army buildingon Durham Street last Friday for theannual expo that attracted more local inputthan in previous years.

Michael Christensen, of theHorowhenua Philatelic Society, says it wastheir first time at the event and they foundthere were a lot of people who wereinterested in the club and a lot who wantedto know more about their own collection.

“It was really interesting for us,” hesaid.

Among the stalls were representativesfrom resthomes, Supergrans and LevinAquatic Centre.

Horowhenua has a thriving agedpopulation, with a multitude of clubs andorganisations providing a huge range ofservices and entertainment.

Tony gets balance rightByFRANKIEWEBB

LVN101014fwrambler2

DESTINED for the market, leatherleaf ferngrown biologically in Levin by TonyRobinson.

Award-winning biological grower TonyRobinson doesn’t believe in totallywriting off chemical use.

“Biological farming is about balance,”the Levin nurseryman said.

“Balanced soil for optimum planthealth.”

A consultant in biological farming,Tony was awarded a Horticulture SilverAward from Biological Farmers NewZealand for the work he has done onreducing chemical sprays.

Tony established Rambler Flowers,Levin, in 1974 after serving a nurserymanapprenticeship with the Lower Hutt CityCouncil.

Since that time he has diversified hisbusiness, surviving in an economicclimate that has killed much of theindustry in New Zealand.

“The industry has faded, market priceshave gone up, there are cheap goodsavailable from overseas, costs have goneup and up,’ he said.

Tony doesn’t grow flowers any more, his crop is Leatherleaf fern, an attractivefoliage plant in demand by florists.

He and another grower imported theplant from America in the 90s and remainthe only two growers in the country.

About 20 years ago, Tony’s concernabout the safety of chemical sprays was acatalyst for him to research a way ofgrowing that was environmentallyfriendly, safe for pickers and safe forclients.

Testing and investigating methods, biological farming gave him the answer

he was looking for. Biologicalinnoculants, plant extracts and wormleachates produced healthy soil, healthypest and disease free crops and a safeenvironment for everyone.

Tony is now in demand as a farmadviser and consultant, and as a guestspeaker. He is a keen vegetable grower forhis own needs but loves to share hisknowledge.

“I believe growing nutritionally richfoods rather than lots of food to meet theworld’s food needs,” he said.

“People need to learn to live with what

you can grow best in the climate and partof the world you are in,” Tony said.Reading weeds is an essential skill.

“A weed indicates what a soil islacking, or excess in,” he said. “Youlearn to read them, you can eradicatethem with soil balance rather thanchemical spray. In the odd occasionwhere spray is unavoidable, you canbuffer the effects by dressing the soilappropriately before and after.”

Tony is one of only a handful ofcommercial flower growers in NewZealand offering a chemical-free product.

Better plants and gardens

Diggingin

WALLY RICHARDS

MEETWALLYCome andmeet Wally Richards at theFarmlands Levin Gardening Expo onTuesday (October 21) at Levin SeniorCitizens Hall, cnr Montgomery andCambridge Streets, Levin, from6.30pm - 8pm.

■ Continued from WednesdayDrench the soil with MBL and the

fertilisers become available to theplants.

You could have a lot of dollars lockedup in your gardens and lawns. It willalso clean up many undesirablechemicals in the soil and, in one trial Iheard about, contaminated land wastransformed into certifiable organicwithin 12 months.

A woman gardener phoned meduring the week in desperation asplants in her garden would not grow, they just sat and sulked. The cause, continued use of nitrophoska blue thatharms the soil life and locks upelements in the soil. MBL can unlockthe damage done.

MBL is a growth booster for plants, itmakes for much bigger root systems, stronger and healthier plants.

Another email I received this weekreads: My dad, a commercial flowergrower for 45-plus years, has had someamazing results with MBL.

He says he would have preferred toremain cynical and put it with all theother wonder product discards, but itvery much has his attention.

Just some of the benefits of MBL:■ Helps aid and speed up seedgermination.■ Helps to release locked up fertilisersfrom past applications, especiallyphosphates.■ Helps increase availability of

chemicalfertilisers andorganic foods forplants.■ Helps reducemany commonplant diseaseproblems.■ Cleans up manytoxic compounds, chemicals and oilspills in soil.■ Helps toestablish plants inareas where they

can’t or struggle to establish.■ Increases vitamin content of plantsand stimulates plant enzymes.■ Stimulates growth of soil microorganisms.■ Increases root respiration andformation.

Increases availability of micronutrients.■ Can increase permeability of plantmembranes, which will enhancenutrient uptake.■ Increases vitamin content of plantsand stimulates plant enzymes.■ Contains a number of trace elementssuch as Silicon, Magnesium, Sulphur,Manganese and more.■ Increases ability of photosynthesis.■ Contains silica which strengthenscell walls, helps block disease andregulates cell temperature, whichincreases drought and frost tolerance.■ Increases the pH buffering propertiesof soil, retaining and releasing watersoluble fertilisers for plants whenneeded.

Increases soil aeration, improvessoil structure and makes soil morefriable.■ Improves the taste and shelf-life ofproduce.

Use MBL at the rates of 20ml perlitre, as a soil drench as required, and10ml per litre as a foliage spray once ortwice a month. MBL is a must for roses, tomatoes and all vegetable and fruitcrops. Green keepers are using it forbetter turf so spray it on to the lawn forbetter, healthier lawns. If you havebrown patches on the lawn where dogshave urinated use MBL to help restoreor re-establish grass.

Use on your flowering annuals forbigger displays and you will need lessplants to fill beds (with balanced NPK ororganic mulches etc). MBL is availablefrom leading garden centres and someMitre10 stores.

QUESTION TIME: New Zealand Prime Minister John Key answering candid questions from the kids atKoputaroa School.

By FRANKIEWEBBKOPUTAROA HALL

Koputaroa Hall was built in 1922 and situatedfurther north up the road. At that time therewas a railway station and numerous railwayhouses. Koputaroa Hall Society Inc bought theland site fromKaraitiana Te Ahu (Mrs HoniMcMillan) for £25. The hall was officiallyopened in 1923 byMr J Linklater, member ofparliament. In 1937 the hall burnt down, butwas rebuilt inthe same year using donatedmaterials andvoluntary labour. 60 years later the hall wasmoved to the present site to be close toKoputaroa School (est 1891) and cost $75000 tomove. Most of themoney came from fundraising inthe community, the landwas donated by theMitchell family. Koputaroa Hall can claim to bethemost used community hall in theHorowhenuaDistrict. The hall has a very active committee co-ordinating hireage of the hall andmaintenance.

Few journalists have an open invitation toask Prime Minister John Key any questionthey like, but Koputaroa School kids weregranted the liberty. Every pupil had amoment of getting up close and personalwith the Prime Minister when he visitedtheir school on Wednesday.

Some of the questions were prettypersonal. What did he least like aboutbeing Prime Minister? “I didn’t like havingto make the decision to send our people tothe war in Afghanistan knowing some maynot return,” he told the audience, whichincluded Horowhenua District Councilchief executive David Clapperton.

What did he like most about beingPrime Minister? “Being able to helppeople,” he said. How much does a PrimeMinister earn? “The PM’s salary is$450,000, junior ministers get $150,000,” hesaid.

Mr Key put in a plug for his desire to seethe New Zealand flag updated. “I’d like tosee a silver fern on it somewhere,” he said.“New Zealand will be given a vote on threedesigns that will help make a decision.”

The Key family consists of wifeBronagh two children, Stephie and Maxand a cat which is known by a variety ofnames. Bronagh is Mr Key’s best friend. On the particular day he visited, his best

friend at work is Otaki MP and thirdgeneration Koputaroa School old boyNathan Guy who accompanied him andwas responsible for arranging the visit. MrKey is 53 and his birthday is August 9.

After the Q & A session he moved on toclassroom inspections. Koputaroa HallSociety took advantage of the VIP visitorgetting a plaque covering the history ofKoputaroa Hall unveiled by the PM.

Ready to harrowwith NATHANGUY

LVN201014fwguy1

NATHAN Guy has retained the Ministerfor Primary Industries and Minister forRacing portfolios.

This is my first rural column after theelection, I want to say a big ‘thank you’to everyone who supported us.

The National Party had very strongsupport from farmers, growers andrural areas which helped us get acrossthe line.

I was thrilled to get a call from thePrime Minister asking me to carry on asthe Minister for Primary Industries andMinister for Racing. Both sectors are abig part of our local economy inHorowhenua, supporting many jobs andfamilies. Racing contributes more than$1.6 billion to the economy and supportsaround 17,000 fulltime equivalent jobs.

We should be proud of our primaryindustries as the backbone of NewZealand’s economy. They generatearound 73 per cent of our merchandiseexports, and help pay for things likeschools, hospitals and roads.

Since becoming the Minister lastyear, I’ve spent a lot of time listening to,and developing strong relationshipsright across the sector.

My focus will remain on doubling thevalue of our exports to $64 billion by2025. I want to push ahead with waterstorage and irrigation projects, deliverreal value from Primary GrowthPartnership (PGP) projects, lift theoutput of Maori agribusiness, and

attract more skilled people to theprimary sector.

I will keep working closely withTrade Minister Tim Groser on tradeagreements and market access, particularly with Korea and the TPP(Trans-Pacific Partnership).

Biosecurity will remain my numberone priority. We need to keep beefing upour protection at the border andworking more efficiently to protect ourproducers.

I’m looking forward to working withJo Goodhew, who is Associate Ministerfor Primary Industries and Minister forFood Safety as well.

SUPPORT: Rural people have their ownunofficial neighbourhood support networks. Ina civil emergency, rescue could be hindered ifthey aren’t on the official list. Rural outbuildings are targets for burglars, more recently stock has also been a target.

Keeping aware of unusual movement isoften something the rural community is goodat sharing amongst themselves, but there’s abigger picture.

“In a natural disaster or civil emergencyeverybody needs to be accounted for,”Neighbourhood Support development co-ordinator Wendy Foreman said. “There arepockets in rural areas that can become veryisolated, we work alongside Civil Defence, they use our mapping system to see who liveswhere.”

Rural communities can share resourcesand be self-sufficient for an extended period oftime.

“We can find out what resources peoplehave in a disaster,” she said. “What resourcesthey can pool if need be.”

Aside from the safety in an emergencyaspect, Neighbourhood Support groups (thereare 4500 members in the Horowhenua) receiveregular information alerting them tosuspicious behaviour in their area.

“Police advise us of suspicious vehicles, target areas etc, which is passed onimmediately to members via email,” Wendyexplained. “It has resulted in people beingcaught through NS members responding to analert.” There have been cases of criminalsseeing names on rural mailboxes, checkingthe phone number with directory and callingthe property to see if anyone is home.

“Someone may notice a car sitting by amailbox for an extended period of time orrevisiting again and again, jot the registrationdown, watch for unusual activity aroundoutbuildings,” Wendy said. “In most placesthere are more outbuildings than houses.”

Currently Neighbourhood SupportHorowhenua has 884 rural members. “Anyonewith an RD address is urged to join us,”Wendy said. “It is free, doesn’t take up yourtime but could save your life.” Forinformation phone 366-0574.

TENDERTIPS Asparagusjoint managing directorGeoff Lewis employsnearly 50 local people inthe pack house whichprocesses over 80 haworth of asparagus.

Horowhenua is a major Asparagusproducer in New Zealand, TendertipsAsparagus, north of Waitarere, beingthe second largest producer in thecountry.

The season has opened boosting localemployment figures and securingincome for the district.

Asparagus is a global commodity, about half of Tendertips’ productiongoes for export while the rest ends up inNew Zealand supermarkets.

Tendertips have their own warmwater anti-pest treatment for Japaneseexport crops, an initiative which hassaved millions of dollars.

A more than $1 per kilo fumigationcharge for asparagus arriving in Japanis rarely necessary, minimising delaysto market and increasing shelf-life.

The Horowhenua business is ownedby two families, the Lewis family beingGeoff and Liz , their son Cameron anddaughter-in-law Catherine, the otherfamily being Margot Shaw and WarwickDevenport. Geoff is joint managingdirector with Margot in the packingshed on the Lewis family farm, whichprocesses around 80ha a year.

Lewis farms has been growing andpacking asparagus on the Horowhenuadairy farm since 1980. New Zealandasparagus exports are valued at over $13million a year.

How to combat scouring in newborns

LVN101014fwcalves

STARTING with healthy livestock is always the best way to start. PHOTO: FRANKIE WEBB

Levin veterinarian StefKnaack BVS shares anupdate on scours inpreweaning calves andlambs.

Last month’sarticle coveredrearingorphanedlambs, kids andcalves.

This month Ihave advice oncauses, clinicalsigns, treatmentand preventionof scourproblems inpreweaninglambs and calves.

Diarrhoea in lambs and calves beingbottle fed can be divided into two groups, nutritional and infectious.

NutritionalOften white or yellow sticky runny

faeces, the lamb or calf is still bright andoften interested in drinking bythemselves. Body temperature is usuallynormal.

■ Causes:Poor quality milk or milk powder being

fed.Inappropriate concentrations of milk

powder, ie too strong.Sudden changes in diet, ie changing to

a different source of milk powder.Overfeeding or feeding milk too cold or

too warm, especially to young lambs andcalves, can lead to diarrhoea or bloat.

Small feeds, more often, of bodytemperature milk (around 38C) are muchsafer than two large feeds a day.

InfectiousFaeces can be watery, mucoid, brown

or yellow, with or without blood, and willoften smell foul; body temperature is oftenelevated above 39C but can be belownormal if animals are very sick and inshock.■ Causes:

There are several bacterial, viral andprotozoal causes of infectious scour.Faecal examinations and cultures areavailable to determine the cause of a scourproblem so the appropriate treatment canbe given.

Younger calves and lambs are morelikely to get sick with rotavirus, e.coli orcryptosporidium infections, where olderanimals are more likely to get coccidiosis, yersiniosis or gastrointestinal worms.

salmonella and campylobacterinfections can occur in all ages.■ Clinical signs:

The first sign of scour is often a dirtytail and behind, or diarrhoea in the penson the ground. Calves and lambs get verydehydrated, lose large amounts of fluidand electrolytes through the faeces, which can lead to sunken eyes andincreased skin tenting — gently pull theskin up, if the animal is dehydrated theskin is slow to return to normal.

Severely affected animals are oftenweak, unable to rise and lethargic withvery weak or absent suckle reflexes.■ Treatment:

Scouring animals can die from severedehydration, the most important aspectof treatment involves fluid therapy.

In animals that are still quite brightand able to suck, oral electrolytesolutions like Revive, Diarrest orEnerlect can be given. Your vet canadvise on how often electrolytes shouldbe given.

Milk feeds should still be continued, electrolytes only maintain hydration andcontrol electrolyte imbalances. Milk isnecessary to provide energy andmaintain optimal gut function. Alternateelectrolyte and milk feeds, two hoursbetween each, until the animal has

recovered and poohs are firmer.Animals unable to suckle may need

fluids given straight into the stomach bystomach tube. Alternatively, intravenousfluids can be provided by a vet during theinitial stages until the animal can resumesuckling.■ Isolation and hygiene:

Keep sick animals isolated, dry andwarm.

Infections can pass onto other animals, and in some cases humans, easily. Washyour hands thoroughly before and afterhandling sick animals.

Pain relief medications are availablefrom your vet, human drugs are not safefor animals.

Bacterial scours may be treated withantibiotics after veterinary assessmentand prescription.■ Prevention:

Colostrum is the biggest preventativemeasure.

Calves, in the first six hours of life, require two litres of fresh colostrum froma newly-calved cow, and 4 litres within the

first 12 hours.Lambs should ideally receive

colostrum from their mother.Alternatively, fresh or frozen cow'scolostrum or freeze-dried colostrumpowder can be used.

You can safely continue feedingcolostrum for the first four days, feedingcolostrum for the first 2-3 weeks will do noharm, due to the high protein levels andcontinued absorptive ability of the gut touptake the antibodies. Avoid suddenchange.

Gradually introduce milk powder bymixing it with less and less colostrum inconsecutive feeds.

If you are planning to purchase eithercalves or lambs for the kids or yourself toraise, ensure you start with stock which isin good health. Check over calves andlambs well before purchase and look fordry, clean tails, bright eyes, good sucklereflexes and dry, shrivelled navels.■ If you have any concerns or questionsabout scours in any species, contact Levin andHorowhenua Vets, ph 368-2891.

DIESEL SERVICES

22 Horowhenua Chronicle Friday, October 17, 2014

CentralAutomotiveServicesCentral Automotive Services is in thebusiness of servicing trucks andcommercial transport vehicles, and islocated on State Highway 1 at the southernend of Levin.

Ian Buckley and Ken McFadyenpurchased the business in January 1986from Modern Freighters where they bothworked keeping the fleet of trucks andtrailers on the road.

They have now been here for 26 and ahalf years.

Every year Ken and Ian take on a dieseland heavy engineering apprentice to jointheir dedicated team of ten staff. Ken, whohas 43 years’ experience, and Ian, who has33 years’ experience, have the perfectbackground to teach the trade.

Even the largest trucks can beaccommodated and they continue to lookafter trucks from all over the country. Theyrecognise that down time costs thetransport industry money, so gettingrepairs and maintenance done quickly, toget the vehicles back on the road again, ismuch appreciated by the industry. To helpmake this possible, they also offer aSaturday morning service.

Central Automotive Services is wellrecognised as the place to go for expertadvice and service in all diesel repairs.

They cover large or small, heavytransport engineering, servicing, pre-purchase appraisals, pre-COF and COFchecks. They also have a VTNZ braketesting machine to save you time whengoing for a COF.

So whatever the size of your truck, trailer, tractor, 4WD, motor home etc, come and see the team at CentralAutomotive Services.

Misty bags titleLVN171014splmisty2

A massive body slam and the national title was all Misty’s.

LEVIN’S Matailyer (Misty) Gripphas reached her goal as the NewZealand Women’s Pro WrestlingChampion.

By PETER FRANKLIN

Eight years’ hard training, bumps and bruises, but it has allbeen rewarded for Levin’sMatailyer Gripp, otherwiseknown as Misty, winning theNew Zealand Women’sProfessional Wrestlingchampion title.

Levin wrestling fans will beable to see her in action in herfirst title defence match onSaturday November 15 at theLevin Memorial Hall.

“It’s taken me eight years, I’mrapt,” she said.

Misty said it was hard workgetting a shot at the title belt.Due to some dodgy refereeing inthe leadup bouts, the organisersof the title tournament declared

that, instead of a rematch, thetitle would be fought out in athree-way match, between Mistyand Aucklanders Frankie Quinnand Krystal Kaine.

Misty said a three-way matchwas the hardest to win. “Simplybecause you can get ganged up onand eliminated,” she said.

She fought through to win thetitle, the highlight of her career.

“When they handed over thechampionship belt I did getemotional but I kept it insideuntil I got back to the dressingroom.”

She is looking forward to herfirst defence of the title but, atthis stage, does not know whoshe will be fighting as there areseveral wrestlers competing towin the right to a title bout.

“It will be a great night forfans in my home town, hopefullythe Memorial Hall will be packedout,” she said.
