The Eighteenth Sunday

in Ordinary Time

Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost

(Traditional Latin Mass)

Total Consecration to Jesus Through Mary

For the 24th consecutive year, parishioners of

St. Agnes are preparing for the Total Consecration to Jesus

through Mary, as developed by St. Louis Marie de Mont-

fort. The 33-day period of preparation begins on Mon-

day, August 6th (the Feast of the Transfiguration of our

Lord). The prayers are said personally and individually,

and culminates on Friday, September 7th, with the vigil of

the Nativity of The Blessed Mother. The Mass and Conse-

cration on Saturday, September 8th, the Feast of the Nativi-

ty of The Blessed Virgin Mary, will however be public for

all who are prepared to make their Consecration.

The preparatory prayer booklet entitled, Preparation for Total

Consecration according to St. Louis Marie de Montfort,

is available at the St. Agnes bookstore.

A note from our Music Director…

Dear Friends & Parishioners of St. Agnes,

I am happy to join the staff at St. Agnes.

I hope to contribute to the musical and liturgical

legacy of this historic church. I want to use the

Catholic Church’s great wealth of sacred music to

enhance our worship in a unique, moving way. As

Director of Music, I especially look forward to work-

ing with the Schola Cantorum. Their hard work and

dedication during this interim period was truly impres-

sive.

My musical life took off when I was a boy

chorister at St. Paul’s Choir School in Cambridge,

MA. I began studying the organ as a student there and

eventually became their first Organ Scholar. Several

years of lessons, Masses, and performances led to my

study at Juilliard. In May, I graduated with a Bache-

lor’s degree in Organ Performance and I will return to

Juilliard this fall as a Master’s Degree student. During

my time at Juilliard, I worked for Christ Church in

Bronxville, NY and more recently, the Parish of

St. Vincent Ferrer and St. Catherine of Siena.

Please feel free to introduce yourselves as I

become acquainted with the parish. I am looking for-

ward to working closely with Fr. Michael Barrett,

whose enthusiasm for the music program is very

encouraging. I am excited to serve the community at

St. Agnes and getting to know all of you.

Yours in Christ,

Alexander Pattavina

Refresh My Memory:

What is a Chaplet?

A chaplet is a string of beads, where on each bead

one says certain designated prayers.

The holy Rosary is, by far, the most famous chaplet

in the Church. However, there are many different types of

chaplets. Often they honor Our Lord or the Blessed Mother

under a particular title, such as the Chaplet of the Sacred

Heart or the Seven Dolors Chaplet, and are special ways

of practicing these Catholic devotions. Some chaplets

honor and ask the intercession of particular Saints, such as

the Chaplet of St. Anthony, St. Philomena, etc.

Chaplets are also known to be powerful aids in

obtaining certain virtues*, such as the Immaculate Concep-

tion Chaplet, which is prayed to obtain and preserve

purity, or the Chaplet of St. Patrick, which is a special

prayer for an increase in faith.

*This is why a chaplet

is a sacramental.

Like holy water,

blessed metals, scapulars, etc,

a sacramental is

a channel through which

God can work.

What is Parish Pay?

ParishPay provides parishioners a simple, secure and convenient way

to support St. Agnes by enabling you to transfer your donations directly from your

checking, savings, or credit card accounts through automated giving.

What is Automated Giving?

An alternate means of support for Saint Agnes instead of envelopes. In lieu of weekly collections, the ParishPay pro-

gram will collect monthly contributions from your checking, saving, or credit card account. There is NO cost to participate

in the program.

What are the benefits to me?

• Allows you to plan your giving, in the same way you budget your other financial commitments.

• You no longer have to be concerned about catching-up missed offertory donations when you miss a Mass because you

are out of town, on vacation, ill, etc.

• You can easily adjust the amount of your automated contribution (increase or decrease) via secure website access.

• You no longer need to write a check every week.

How does it relate to the use of the weekly envelopes?

If you choose to participate in ParishPay, this will replace your weekly envelopes.

What about Special Collections and a one time Donation?

You can specify your giving preference for Second Collections and special celebration dates (e.g., Christmas, Easter)

when you join ParishPay, or anytime thereafter. And, yes, a special one-time gift can be made.

To Sign up or more information

It’s easy to sign up. Visit our church website and click on ParishPay. Or, visit www.parishpay.com to enroll on-line or

call ParishPay’s Toll-Free Customer Service Center at 866-PARISH1 (866-727-4741). If you need help, contact Anna at the

Rectory Office (212-682-5722).

What is Appia?

Appia is an app for iPhones specifically designed to help Friends & Parishioners have up-to-date

information for Mass times, Confessions, Holy Days of Obligation, and other activities at St. Agnes and

other churches. You can make your church contributions through Appia. Stop by our website and click the

Appia icon, or download Appia at the Apple App Store, or access it at www.appia.org. If you are having

any trouble downloading Appia, contact Anna Megan at (212-682-5722). Once enrolled, donating is easy.

First, select St. Agnes from the map of churches in Manhattan, then tap the $ sign to make your contribu-

tion. We’re proud to say that Appia was created by a Catholic for Catholics. Many thanks to Wilken Yu,

the creator of Appia, for all his help.

Church Contributions

Help us meet our expenses

Beginning in August, St. Agnes will publish church contributions once

a month. This number will include all donations, including those made online,

which previously distorted the weekly report as it takes time for those num-

bers to post. A monthly number gives a better overall understanding of the

financial picture of our church in terms of donations.

St. Agnes still operates at a deficit. We continue to need your help!

The monthly report of church contributions is NOT savings in the bank,

but what we need to operate on a day-to-day basis. If you haven’t made your

church contributions online, you might want to consider it. St. Agnes works

with Parish Pay (also called We Share) and Appia (info below). We have

found that those who donate online find it an easy option for giving.

RCIA at St. Agnes for Fall 2018

RCIA course for those interested in completing sacraments

(Baptism, Confirmation) or converting to the Catholic

scripture, theology, sacraments, and commandments. We

also welcome those who seek to deepen their knowledge of

the faith.

lower church hall on Thursdays at 6:45pm. After complet-

ing the course, students will be received into the Church at

the Easter Vigil at St. Agnes on April 20th, 2019.

There is no charge for this course.
