Contestants must be entered in all three trials to be eligible. A special entry deadline (on or before 2/20/15) has been made to accommodate contestants wishing to be eligible to earn points in the Rally portion of this event.
As contestants travel from one location to the other, and while they are trialing, there will be articles, things to do and other assorted things that will earn points. They may be as random as the color of your car or something you must find and hand to the Rally coordinator, Elsie Rhodes, to receive credit. Points will be tallied each day. The prize money will be awarded on Sunday following class awards.

GENERAL RULES: Time Limit: HRD I and II 20 minutes HRDIII 25 minutes.
All elements must be attempted prior to moving on.
All gates may be open/closed or pre-set at the Handler’s discretion to increase safety
Tie breakers, in order, will be Exercise #2 “Fetch/Drive”, Exercise #7 “Fetch/Dive (Ducks)”, Time.
STARTING SET- UP: 5 sheep in Stockyard, 7 sets of 5 sheep in Alley C-D, 5 ducks in take pen, 7 sets of 5 ducks in reserve
1. GATHER – 10 pts.: Enter Arena A through designated 4’ gate. Exercise begins when gate to Pen #1 is opened. Team will proceed to the position for their level. Gather (5) sheep from the Stockyard and move into Arena A. Exercise ends when gate to Arena A is closed.
HRDI Dog is left approximately halfway, Handler may move within 15 feet of sheep
HRDII Dog is left at the Handler’s Post, Handler may move to just inside Stockyard
HRDIII Team begins at the Handler’s Post, where the Handler remains until the dog enters the Stockyard. Once the
dog has entered the Stockyard, the handler may move forward to Arena A gate into Pen #1.
2. FETCH / DRIVE – 15 pts.: Exercise begins when Gate to Arena A is closed. Move the sheep from the gate through Obstacle #1, and pen in Pen #2. Exercise ends when gate between Pen #2 and Arena A is closed.
HRDI Handler may move anywhere
HRDII & III Handler may move anywhere up to the marked handler’s line
3. PASS THRU / SMALL PENS – 10 pts.: Exercise begins when the gate between Pen #2 and Arena A is closed. The team will pass through Pen #2 without disturbing the sheep. (Judge will designate the pen in Alley C-D). Move sheep from Pen #2 and pen in the designated pen in Alley C-D. Briefly shut pen gate to mark the end of the exercise.
HRDI & II Team will move sheep from Pen #2 and pen into a vacant pen
HRDIII (Note collar color on sheep in designated pen). Team will combine sheep from Pen #2 with the sheep in
the designated pen.
4. NARROW ALLEY – HRDI & II – 10 pts.: Handlers should pre-set needed gates prior to exercise beginning. Exercise begins when the gate to the designated pen is re-opened. Remove sheep from designated pen, negotiate the Narrow Alley, and pen in Pen #3. The team will pass through Pen #3 without disturbing the sheep and enter Arena B. Exercise ends when the gate between Arena B and Pen #3 is closed.
5. SORT – HRDIII ONLY – 20 pts.: Exercise begins when the gate to the designated pen is re-opened. Move sheep into the Squeeze Chute Alley. Utilizing the Squeeze Chute, sort the sheep originally in the designated pen into the Upper Back Alley. Leave sheep originally gathered from the Stockyard in the Squeeze Chute Alley. Move sheep from Upper Back Alley and pen in Pen #3. Team will pass through Pen #3 without disturbing the sheep and enter Arena B. Exercise ends when the gate between Arena B and Pen #3 is closed.
6. FETCH / DRIVE – DUCKS – 20 pts.: Exercise begins when gate between Arena B and Pen #3 is closed. Team will remove (5) ducks from the Set-out Pen and move ducks through Obstacle #2. Exercise ends when ducks have cleared Obstacle #2.
HRDI & II Handler may move anywhere.
HRDIII Handler may move anywhere up to the marked level III handler’s line.
7. RE-PEN – DUCKS – 15 pts.: Exercise begins when ducks have cleared obstacle #2. Team will move ducks to the Re-pen and pen. Handler will call dog off and enter Pen #3 without disturbing the sheep. Exercise ends when the gate between Footbath Alley and Pen #3 is opened.
8. FOOTBATH AND RE-PEN – 10 pts.: Exercise begins when gate between Footbath Alley and Pen #3 is opened. Move sheep from Pen #3 through footbath and pen in Stockyard. Exercise ends when the gate to the Stockyard is closed.

3. PEN / PASS THRU – 10 pts.: Exercise begins when the sheep have cleared the plane of Obstacle #2. The sheep are moved to the Pen #2 where they are penned. The team will pass through Pen #2 without disturbing the sheep. Exercise ends when the team is in the Narrow Alley.
4. SMALL PENS – 10 pts.: Exercise begins when the team is in the Narrow Alley. (Judge will designate the pen in Alley C-D). Move sheep from Pen #2 and pen in the designated pen in Alley C-D. Briefly shut pen gate to mark the end of the exercise.

All gates must be closed and latched unless otherwise stated
Dog must hold sheep off all gates
Tie breakers, in order, will be Exercise #3 “Freestanding Obstacle”, Exercise #2 “Drive/Wear”, Time
STARTING SET-UP: 5 sheep in Chicken Field 5 Sheep in sort yard pen A or D. All gates are shut and latched
1. GATHER – 20 pts.: Time starts when handler and dog arrive at Cone A. Gather sheep to Cone A and pass them around cone counterclockwise. Exercise ends when the last sheep has passed between Cone A and the Test Arena fence
HRDI Place dog half way between Cone A & sheep. Handler may move to within 15 feet of the sheep. HRDII Place dog at Cone A. Handler may move half way to sheep. HRDIII Handler and dog work from Cone A
2. DRIVE / WEAR – 25 pts.: Exercise begins when the last sheep has passed between Cone A and the Test Arena fence. Drive/wear sheep through freestanding panels into Ewe Lane, then into Big Arena. Ewe Lane gate must be closed and latched before Big Arena gate is opened. Exercise ends when Big Arena gate is shut and locked.
HRDI The handler may walk with sheep throughout. HRDII The handler will remain at Cone A until the sheep pass through the panel HRDIII The handler will remain at Cone A until sheep arrive at the Ewe Lane gate. Dog to hold sheep at the gate until
the handler arrives.
3. FREESTANDING OBSTACLE – 15 pts.: Exercise begins when Big Arena gate is shut and locked. Move sheep into the freestanding V. When the Judge calls the hold, remove the sheep from the V. Exercise ends when last sheep exits the V
4. SORT – HRDIII ONLY – 10 pts.: Exercise begins when last sheep exits the V. Move sheep anywhere in the open area between the V and the fences. Shed two sheep from the group and show you have control of them. Exercise ends when the judge calls the shed.
5. TIGHT SPACES & PENWORK – 20 pts.: Exercise begins when the last sheep exits V for HRDI & II or when the judge calls the shed. Move sheep through Round Corral into Sort Yard. Both gates, from Round Pen and into Sort Yard, must be open before sheep leave Round Corral. Put sheep into pen A or D, whichever is empty. Remove 5 sheep from other pen, move sheep into Main Alley. Exercise ends when the gate into the Main Alley is closed and latched.
6. REPEN – 10 pts.: Exercise begins when the gate into the Main Alley is closed and latched. Settle sheep at east end of Main Alley. The dog will hold the sheep at the east end while the handler opens the gate into the footbath gate box. Repen sheep through the Footbath. Time ends when the handler closes the Footbath gate box gate.

GENERAL RULES: Time: 20 minutes. All elements must be attempted prior to moving on. Tie breakers, in order, will be Exercise #1 “Take/Exhaust Pen, Obstacle1”, Exercise #3 “Outrun-Lift-Fetch,” Time.
STARTING SET-UP: There will be a set of (5) five ducks in four of the five holding pens, and one set in the Take/Exhaust pen. There will be 5
five sheep in Field 1 All gates will be closed and must be closed at the completion of the run; except the north end gate leading from Field 1 into
Field 1a, which will remain open throughout the day.
1. TAKE/EXHAUST PEN, OBSTACLE 1 – 25 pts.: Time and the exercise begin when gate to Duck Take/Exhaust Pen is opened. Remove ducks from pen, fetch/drive through obstacle, repen in Duck Take/Exhaust Pen. Handler and dog follow the ducks into the pen. This exercise ends when the Duck Take/Exhaust Pen is closed.
2. CLOSE, TIGHT PEN WORK – 20 pts.: This exercise begins when the gate into the Duck Take/Exhaust is closed with the dog and handler inside with the ducks. Put ducks into crate, carry to empty pen, and release the ducks. Move the ducks from one of the holding pens (the judge will tell you which pen) to the Duck Take/Exhaust Pen, handler and the dog will walk through the pen without the dog working the ducks. This exercise ends when the Duck Take/Exhaust Pen gate is latched close.
3. OUTRUN, LIFT, AND FETCH – 20 pts.: This exercise begins when the gate into Duck Take/Exhaust Pen is closed. Team will enter Field 1 and move to the marker appropriate to the level at which they are running. The dog will do an outrun, and move the sheep to the Marker appropriate for its level. HRDIII will move the sheep through Obstacle 2 on the fetch. This exercise ends when the all the sheep are behind the marker for their level.
HRDI The dog remains at the HRDI marker, the Handler may position themselves as close as 15 feet from the sheep. The handler may move with the sheep. The sheep will be moved behind marker for HRDI.
HRDII Will leave the dog at the middle marker and may move up to the HRDI marker. The sheep will be fetched to behind middle marker.
HRDIII Handler will remain in at the HRDIII marker 3 throughout this exercise. During the fetch the sheep should be moved through Obstacle 2, continuing to a position behind the marker.
4. RIBBON PULL – HRDIII ONLY – 10 pts.: The exercise begins when the sheep are behind the HRDIII marker. Remove the ribbon anywhere within a 30 feet radius of the HRDIII marker. Exercise ends when the ribbon has been removed.
5. DRIVE/WEAR – 25 pts.: The exercise begins when the sheep move out from behind the marker in HRDI and II or when the ribbon has been pulled in HRDIII. Move the sheep to the north gate into Field 1a. The exercise and time end when the last sheep has entered Field 1a.
HRDI May fetch or drive to the gate.
HRDII Will drive to the gate.
HRDIII Will drive to the gate.
Frog’s Breath Farm - March 15, 2015 Herding Ranch Dog Sheep Trial (HRDs)
GENERAL RULES: Time: 20 minutes. All elements must be attempted prior to moving on. Tie breakers, in order, will be Exercise #1 “Take/Exhaust Pen, Obstacle1”, “Exercise #3 “Outrun-Lift-Fetch,” Time.
STARTING SET-UP: There will be sets of (5) five sheep in each of the five holding pens, the Take/Exhaust pen and in Field 1 All gates will be closed and must be closed at the completion of the run; except the north end gate leading from Field 1 into
Field 1a, which will remain open throughout the day.
1. TAKE/EXHAUST PEN, OBSTACLE 1 – 25 pts.: Time and the exercise begin when gate to Sheep Field 1a is opened. Gather sheep, fetch/drive through obstacle, repen in Pen C. Handler and dog follow the sheep into the pen. This exercise ends when the gate to the Pen C is closed with both dog and handler inside.
2. CLOSE, TIGHT PEN WORK – 20 pts.: This exercise begins when the gate into Pen C is closed with the dog and handler inside with the sheep. Move the sheep into Pen B, then into the empty holding pen. Remove a set of sheep from the pen indicated by the judge, moving them into Pen C; handler and the dog will walk through the pen without the dog working the sheep. The dog will hold the sheep away from the gate while the handler opens it. Take the sheep out of Pen C, the dog must cover while the gate is being closed. Call the dog off the sheep, exit the field. This exercise ends when Field 1 a gate is closed.
3. OUTRUN, LIFT, AND FETCH – 20 pts.: This exercise begins when Field 1 a gate is closed. Team will enter Field 1 and
move to the marker appropriate to the level at which they are running. The dog will do an outrun, and move the sheep to
the Marker appropriate for its level. HRDIII will move the sheep through Obstacle 2 on the fetch. This exercise ends when
the all the sheep are behind the marker for their level.
HRDI The dog remains at the HRDI marker, the Handler may position themselves as close as 15 feet from the sheep. The handler may move with the sheep. The sheep will be moved behind marker for HRDI.
HRDII Will leave the dog at the middle marker and may move up to the HRDI marker. The sheep will be fetched to behind middle marker.
HRDIII Handler will remain in at the HRDIII marker 3 throughout this exercise. During the fetch the sheep should be moved through Obstacle 2, continuing to a position behind the marker.
4. RIBBON PULL – HRDIII ONLY – 10 pts.: The exercise begins when the sheep are behind the HRDIII marker. Remove the
ribbon anywhere within a 30 feet radius of the HRDIII marker. Exercise ends when the ribbon has been removed.
5. DRIVE/WEAR – 25 pts.: The exercise begins when the sheep move out from behind the HRDI or HRDII marker, or when the ribbon has been pulled in HRDIII. Move the sheep to the north gate into Field 1a. The exercise and time end when the last sheep has entered Field 1a.
HRDI May fetch or drive to the gate. HRDII Will drive to the gate. HRDIII Will drive to the gate.
