Last Saturday’s Vocational Award entitled “Celebrating Best Employment Practices for Persons With Disabilities” was a truly meaningful one. With the presence of the awardees and individuals who continuously gave them the much needed opportunities, the affair was not merely a ritual one but one that was purely inspirational.

Again, our most sincere appreciation for Dir. Cora and Rtn. Naas who took great steps in making everybody else’s day! It was a tough feat, original and “a must”. This vocational month award is definitely worth keeping, reaching and learning! It should not end there!

Congratulations too SAA Jun Bondoc and Rtn. Lani Fabi for their untiring efforts for the Rotaractors and the Interactors. Rotary International has issued the Certificate of Organization recognizing the (1) Interact Club of Baguio City National High School- Science, Philippines, (2) Interact Club of Baguio Patriotic High School, Philippines and (3) Interact Club of Saint Louis High School – Pacdal, Philippines. All, of course, are sponsored by the Rotary Club of Baguio.

As we turn another month, The Rotary Foundation goals have to be accomplished. We call on all our members to generously support this project. Thank you for the Paul Harris and Sustaining contributors. May you continue to receive the graces of our Lord in Heaven. For the rest of us, thank you in advance.

For the first quarter the Club has substantially accomplished its goals. But we have to work on our membership growth. Let us share Rotary to our friends and loved ones. An invitation to our meetings by each and every one of us will surely bear fruit in the near future. A club has to grow but it cannot do so by itself. Let us commit to do our share for the best of the Club. Bring a guest!

The Rotary Club of Baguio Cluster 1-C District 3790 3

For those who always want to place a price tag on everything, even on voluntary contributions, let me pose these concerns..

How much price do you tag on the precious time, talent & services shared by :

• our renowned Rotarian surgeons - Rtn. Joey Bugayong, PP Diony Claridad & PP Alfred Laygo - as they skillfully performed, and dutifully mentored our Rotaractors in the, circumcision of 26 boys and excision of lipoma in an adult male patient?

• our relatively new Rotarian dentist Dr. Jen Soriano who, with her 3 co-dental practitioners (equally well-respected in Baguio in their field of practice), shared their expertise as they voluntarily rendered dental services to 68 patients?

• our Rotarian realtor, who is actually an optometrist by profession, Dr. Cess Apostol, who accepted the challenge of single-handedly performing optical check- up to a record-breaking number of 98 patients?

How do you mathematically measure the commitment & selfless volunteerism of :

• our fellow members : Pres. Libby, Sec. Baby, Dir. Atom, Dir. Gigi, Dir./PP Bert, PP Gerard, PP Lito, Rtn. Lily, and our volunteer doctors (who were previous members of the Rotaract Club of SLU School of Medicine)), Drs. Honey Bilog & Rodel Tan- who, instead of relaxing and spending the much-needed vacation with their respective families, chose to extend a helping hand in the different aspects of the mission; and for our physicians, to examine 58 pediatric, 76 medical & 6 ob-gyne patients, as they supervise too the junior medical interns & the Rotaractors ?

• our 4 volunteer junior medical interns, who should be reviewing for their written COWE (an exam which is a pre-requisite for their graduation as medical doctors) which will be held the next day, yet chose to perform a good deed to render service, as their “form of prayer” (to quote them) to hopefully pass the said examination?

• our 20 Rotaractors from the SLU School of Medicine, headed by Pres. Jojo Laygo, who, instead of enjoying their well-earned vacation after a hectic first semester schedule in the college, opted

to join the mission, as their way of practicing the Rotaract motto of “Fellowship through Service”?

• the Aboitiz employees, headed by our very own VP Chris Faelnar & Engr. Romy Catingub, who agreed to work wholeheartedly even on a holiday, as their way of fulfilling their social responsibility to the community?

• the barangay leaders and volunteers who announced the activity to the community, especially those in the far flung barrios, who appropriately prepared the place where the mission will be held, who manned the mission to ensure order, discipline & crowd control?

As they say, the voluntary nature of an act ceases with the commitment to perform such. Yet, no one has the responsibility to place a price tag on volunteerism and commitment, neither the right to deprive such committed volunteers of the “graces earned” and the inner satisfaction they’ve felt in the fulfillment of such task.

Their reward? Aside from the “graces” from above, it’s the beautiful cool mountain weather, the awesome scenic view along the way and back, the warm hospitality of the community, the sumptuous lunch as a treat from Aboitiz, the welcome and grateful smiles of the patients, the strengthening of the knot of friendship between and among us RCB members and our partners in service, another wonderful opportunity to serve as we fellowship with each other…

Such is the GIVE AND TAKE nature of VOLUNTEERISM AND COMMITMENT WITH PASSION, of “GIVING WITHOUT COUNTING THE COST…” - - - PRICELESS!!!

Kitchen wares and twice she won! Sec. Baby gathered her winning as PP Mike handled the meetings raffle.

Dir. Cora Ocampo lively introduced the club’s Vocational Awardee.

Our Rotary meeting was ably emceed by PP Raffy Chan. The meeting started on time as expected. Everyone knows our RCB Club is the only “ON TIME” Club in Baguio. Kudos to us RCB. Time is Gold! Aren’t we Great! ?

We were graced by the presence of our beloved Rotary Anns. Cynch Meadows reflectively led the Invocation.

We had lots of visitors that day making PP Diony Claridad’s Introduction of Visiting Rotarians and Guests quite extensive.

A Vision Impaired Vocational Awardee, Alona, shared her angelic voice. She was accompanied by Jimmy’s skillful guitar rendition. They entertained our club with 3 beautiful songs, “Love Moves in Mysterious Ways”...Hmmm....Ain’t that true? My favorite one: “There’s A Kind of Hush”, my era. This made three of us ladies on our table dance on our seats.

PP Doming Valencia’s Finest Moments elicited a lot of attention and laughter. It was the “Editor’s Comic Section” archived from 2008-2009 Canao. This was authored by creative, talented and humorous, then Editor-in-Chief, Rtn. Dhory Vicencio to highlight the fun side of our club. Imagine certain action characters in the engineered faces of our fellow Rotarians projected on screen for all to savour. The fortunate members graced by this section were:

1 Rtn. Dhory Vicencio - in the Adams Family as Morticia Similarity: Head of family, witty, never afraid to try new things.

2 PP Bert Talco as the Nutty Professor - Good hearted, humble, love of others.

3 PP Mia Cawed as Jean Gray of the X-Men - the perfect phoenix of RCB - Awakened by a long sleep whose ultimate power was unleashed during her presidency.

4 PP Gerard Audineau as Charlie Chaplin - Gerard brought joy to receipients of RCB. He deeply cares about what he does, passionate about his assignments

5. PP Veeh Balajo as M in James Bond Series: Tomorrow Never Dies - Confident, respected, commanding boss of James Bond. See similarities?

6 PE Uwe Kohler as Antz - Tireless worker, Works for the cause to fulfill his obligation as a dutiful Rotarian

7 Rtn. Joey Bugayong as Aga Muhlach in “Oki doki doc” - They look kinda similar, don’t you think? Handsome, charming, involved in social responsibilities.

8. Charlie’s Angels:

• Natalie Cook - by Cameron Diaz as Pam Perkins Per commentary: stylist, fun to be with, straight forward, go getter woman, a whole hearted enviromentalist, passionate in everything she does

• Dylan - by Drew Barrymore - Gigi Maranan She is the Unofficial leader of the angels, a happy go lucky angel. Her organizing prowress ensures that all will be taken cared of. She exudes charm to all people from all walks of life. Gigi can just snap her fingers and viola...mission is accomplished!

• Flo - hmmm....sorry she was absent

9. PP Mike Pearson as Dr. Gregory House - a protagonist of the innovative medical promiseurs has a totally honest honest demeanor. While his behaviour can border on anti-social at times. He is brilliant, an unconventional diagnostician whose uncomventional and flawless instinct garners him respect

10 PP Ben Ladilad in Indiana Jones as Professor of the Raiders of the Lost Ark.Like Indiana Jones, Ben has several episodes in his equally thrilling life as director of DOST. He has made a difference in govt and enviroment

11 PP Diony Claridad as Batman - weathy industrialist. a good hearted contributor, a hero, witty, great sense of humor, humble and good looking....Wow....ha Diony....!

RYLA 2012 was an awesome and unforgettable experience for 19 delegates whom the Rotary Club of Baguio sent to participate in this event. Read through to know more about some of their personal learnings and insights…

INTERACT CLUB OF BAGUIO PATRIOTIC HIGH SCHOOLKENT LASDACAN – President

“Being part of the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) 2012-2013, I was able to experience and learn new things about the importance of New Generations to Rotary. As what the past RI president said,”New Generations isn’t just important to the future of Rotary but also our communities and the world”. This event shows the essence of RYLA 2012 is all about working together can make great ideas work. It is a great pleasure that we, the Interact Club Of Baguio Patriotic High School has been part of a 3-day island adventure during the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) 2012-2013 that was held at Grande Island Resort, Subic Bay Freeport Zone last October 19-21, 2012. This event gave us the opportunity to experience and learn new things through different team building activities and inspirational talks. RYLA also shared us the knowledge that being part of the Rotary Club is how life should be lived and must be lived with honor and integrity. The Interact Club of Baguio Patriotic High School sent a total of 5 delegates. Together with the Interact Club of Saint Louis Pacdal; Interact Club of Baguio City National High School-Science; Interact Club of Barangay Lucnab; Rotaract Club of Barangay Lucnab; and Rotaract Club of Saint Louis University-Medicine, the adventure was successfully completed.”

JIMLER CHOW – Secretary

“RYLA opened my eyes to view more of what is around me. With the different topics that were talked about and with the things done, I learned that I should do my best in dealing with life changing situations. I learned many other things, and because of this, I shall continue this journey.”

YASMIN OCAMPO – Member

“I developed my confidence, with the help of the Rotaracts: Our “ates” and “kuyas”, wherein, they taught me that: “if you are shy or you don’t have confidence, nothing will happen.” You have to grab the opportunities that are given to you, because if you try, there is a bigger chance that you will succeed, rather than not trying, it

won’t give you any chance to succeed. Another thing is that, I have learned how to be independent. Because during the activities, everybody was doing their own business, so you don’t have a chance to get help from them. I also learned how to have good camaraderie towards each member whom I haven’t met before. During our teambuilding, we also created a good atmosphere among the members of our team. During our stay in the island, I learned these values while doing the activities and at the same time having fun. There are many things or values that we can learn during the RYLA, that could help us to become a better person in the future.”

ALLAN KIRSTEN CALLEJO – Member

“Upon reaching the island we went to our respective rooms and we prepared for the program. About 17:00 we ate pm snacks then listened to our speakers, their teachings were amazing and inspiring as well. 20:00 we had our amazing dinner and they invited the participants of the Mr. and Miss RYLA, after that we had to go to our rooms and prepare for tomorrow.6:00 in the morning we jogged and took a bath to prepare for breakfast and the introduction of other speakers, then we met Ms. Jean Garcia and her daughter. After that we had our outdoor activities, the activities were the enjoyable part of the RYLA. While we had some minor concerns about the amenities and service, overall I enjoyed the RYLA.”

JASMIN AHMED – Member

“The RYLA island adventure 2012 started with a bang! As the Rotary International Club held its big event of the year on October 19 to 21, 2012 at the Grande Island Resort in Subic. On the island, there was a fixed schedule of fun and challenging activities to do on the island. There were 6 particular activities namely , the Shelter Box challenge , Lost in the woods , Obstacles of life , Fire starters , Island hoppers and the Waterbourne .There was also a pageant wherein different candidates represented the different schools and universities throughout the Philippines. A lot of wonderful things happened on the island , sometimes it is good to have fun but it is best if we have fun and learn something at the same time. The Rotary Club consists of people who meet together with a common bond of

fellowship and good will. Each local club is made up, in the main, of business and professional people dedicated to service above self and the promotion of peace throughout the world, by association, education and fellowship. Living a life that matters doesn’t happen by accident. It is not a matter of circumstance but of choice. Choose to live a life that matters.”

INTERACT CLUB OF BARANGAY LUCNABJONARD FELIPE – President

“I am happy to have experienced RYLA 2012. I am thankful because I learned many things to be a leader and to join in activities with other people. I also met new and beautiful Interact officers and members. I enjoyed all the activities that they assigned to us and I am proud to be part of Interact Club”.

DIANE ROCHELLE JAVIER – Vice President

“Being part of RYLA is very unforgettable for me, because it is the first time that I went to a place with someone or somebody that I don’t know. I enjoyed the company of my new friends even if we don’t know each other. We always laughed with the corny jokes of the boys and learned to appreciate the people that always make us smile in their simple way. We made sure also that each of us had her/his companion wherever she/he goes. Being in the island is very wonderful and interesting specially if you meet strangers and everyday when you meet them, they just greet you with a smile. I learned to be more active to help my co- Interactors and to listen to their problems and how they are going to start their projects. I also learned to be more sociable not just to fit their expectations of me but to be more supportive to what my club started and to help them to be more active in helping the others in their simple way. With my Rotaract brothers and sisters I learned from them that each of us must have the responsibility to be more protective to our little brothers and sisters. With my co-Interactors, I learned from them the value of being friendly not just because you have to stay with them for three days and two nights but that friendship will be treasured forever.”

INTERACT CLUB OF SAINT LOUIS PACDALCYPRENE KEITH SIBELIUS - President

“This weekend was a million times better than I expected. It was unexpectedly phenomenal. RYLA is a unique experience that trained us not only the leadership skills but also cooperation, survival and team building skills. These are key factors contributing to a great leader but are somehow ignored. Leaders are not born but made. I’ve realized that taking the first step to learn can always help me to be a good leader! I learned every team or group is just like a chain and there is no way to improve its performance unless we are willing to help the weakest one inside. This idea really inspired me deeply.”

RHODELYN MAE RIMANDO - Director (Finance)

“Upon reaching the island we went in our respective rooms. at 4:00 pm the opening ceremony began and our first speaker was PDG Oyan Villanueva, he talked about how we the youth can be a good leader one day and what is the deeper meaning of Rotary. He oriented us about the four persons who started Rotary. 7:00 pm, we had our dinner. On Day 2 : the second speaker was Mr. Lemton Agricola, he talked about drugs on how drugs can affect our body. Then, the next speakers were Alden Richard, he talked about the background of the very famous dance the Gangnam Style, followed by Alwyn Uytingco and Jennica Garcia. Ms. Jennica talked about the things we should check in ourselves first. Ms. Jean Garcia also gave a very short speech. 12:00 we had our lunch at the Plenary/Eagles. After lunch PP Abs Tayco talked about the shelter box tent. This shelter box tent was used when typhoon Sendong damaged our country. It helped many Filipinos. After an hour, the adventure began and I joined the water borne challenge, it was hard but fun. 7:00 pm we had our dinner and there were fire dances, the band and lastly the fireworks. Day 3 : we woke up early and we rode the banana boat ride and RYLA event ended. RYLA talks about or tells about how we youth enhance our abilities as one. It was fun because of the learnings we can got. We also met some new friends in RYLA. It was enjoyable and next year I want to do it again”.

INTERACT CLUB OF BAGUIO CITY NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SCIENCEBRIAN COLCOL – President

“The experience in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (R.Y.L.A.) was really unforgettable. At first, It was intimidating to see new people, and to experience new environments, but as time passed by, those people that were new became new friends, and together we faced these new experiences. The first day was alright, when we got to the island, we didn’t know where to go, but good thing they had the key to one room. When we arrived in the room, the first thing we did was to pray, and thank God for giving us protection throughout the trip, then we introduced ourselves. After that, we went around the island to familiarize ourselves. Then, the program started, and the speakers were good. We learned that the real goal of Rotary, and the difference of Rotary to other organizations. All in all, the first day was great. The second day was booked with activities, from morning to evening, we had activities, especially in the afternoon, in our group, we were tasked to make fire, and that is what we tried to do, it was really hard, and unfortunately our group didn’t get to make fire, but even if we didn’t accomplish that, we still had the greatest price of all, which is friendship with one another, having fun. After that, we all gathered and watched the Mr., and Ms. RYLA 2012, the contestants were good no doubt but the best won. After that, the party began, the band performed and then there was the spectacular fireworks. After that, we went back to the room and slept. The final day was cool, first, we woke up early and ate, then we had a banana boat ride, but it took us like 2 hours before we even got a ride. Then we checked out at 11:00am then we left the island at 2:30pm. When we got back to the main land, we had picture taking, said our good byes, ate at KFC, and then left for Baguio. It was truly an experience to remember.”

RODRIGO BONDOC – Vice President

“It was a great experience going to Grande Island and it was my first time to go to a separate island at Subic. As soon as we arrived, the Rotarians at the Registration gave us a kit that was useful in the island and after that we waited for the ferry to depart. As we departed I was so happy that the Wi-Fi connection was immediately on and because of that I

was able to update my friends in Facebook how the island was so beautiful. And also as we landed we were given a welcome mango juice that was so delicious, and then they gave us keys to proceed to our rooms. We were with all Rotarians, Rotaractors and Interactors from all over Luzon. The hosts Rotarians are well trained in the sponsorship of RYLA, setting up a good agenda, and of course bringing some artists from GMA 7 (which barely I don’t know who they are). About the place, the swimming pool is super large that almost all of us can fit and of course with a lifeguard. The staff are very nice, polite and always at your service whenever you need them, riding on their ATV helping the guests have a free ride to your room especially when your room is so far and they also tell you the directions to all the different areas. Overall, RYLA is epic, an unforgettable experience, legendary and the best.”

ROTARACT CLUB OF BARANGAY LUCNABRUBIA AMILING – Vice President

“Being my first time to join the RYLA is a great achievement on my part to meet new friends, new learning, new experience, new adventure and new place. Going out of my comfort zone, there is doubt where will I find myself and being worried of what will happen during RYLA as this is the time to learn, to know and to help myself discover what are my potentials and my weaknesses. It is also enhancing my awareness of my environment, my society, the people around me on how I will mingle with them and adapt to the situation. The most unforgettable experience I had is the Banana Boat ride. I was able to conquer my fear of open spaces, the fear of not knowing how to swim. Trust is developed in this activity. I learned to have fun, enjoy the company of Interactors and Rotaractors. I learned to be open-minded, it opened up new experiences that will last forever. I’m so thankful to the Rotary Club of Baguio for giving me the chance to be one of the participants to attend the RYLA event”.

ROTARACT CLUB OF SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY - MEDICINEYASSER AL-HASSAN – Member

“It is my first time to join RYLA and i never regret it. It was a great experience meeting other club members and discussing programs on community service with them. The lectures were very informative and educational. I learned a lot of new things such as the history of Rotary and what the Rotary has accomplished, the true meaning of public service and the qualities of a good leader. I was also motivated and inspired by some of the speakers. What I enjoyed most was the team building activities. It helped us not only by learning how to work as a team but also by sharpening our planning and decision making skills which is very important for us future leaders and public servants.”

“Dear Fellow RCB Members,

Warm Greetings from Washington State!

I had the pleasure of visiting one of the busiest club in this part of the United States last October 24, 2012, Wednesday at 7am at the Tacoma Art Museum.

Led by Pres. Janet Olejar, the 50 members of the Rotary Club of Tacoma Sunrise warmly received me and asked to speak about our club and some of our projects. I handed them a copy of our club’s accomplishments of last Rotary Year in CD. The exchange of bannerettes also took place after.

Their club speaker for that day was Ken Gibson who talked about their projects for persons with disabilities. He specifically mentioned the needs of the Philippines in this area.

Both the President Janet & I expressed our desire to do projects in the future.

I’m still looking forward to do some more club visits while I am here in this country.

Best Regards.

IPP Flo

Members Time by VP Chris Faelnar:

VP Chris is the Chair of Ways and Means for Rotary’s 75th Jubilee. There will be a Rotary Fund Raising Concert for A Cause on Dec 7 at BSU Gym. Our club got the Gym venue for a super discounted rental price of only P2000. Thanks to PP Ben Ladilad.

He mentioned the committees and their assignments. This sounds great and exciting. I look forward to this.

The meeting ended in a jovial tone. It was long but fruitful. That was the longest retrospect I’ve ever made. Phew!!!!!

Thank God it is finally over.
