How you

can help

Whoare we?

The Caucasus Nature Fund (CNF) is a

conservation trust fund established to safeguard

the Caucasus ecoregion —one of the most

biologically rich and diverse areas on Earth.

The region has a network of national parks and

nature reserves. But these protected areas suffer

from severe underfunding and risk becoming

nothing more than “paper parks.”

CNF is combating this phenomenon in the South

Caucasus by providing matching grants,

management assistance and local capacity building

to sustain the parks for generations to come.

Our support is tangible and direct:

g buying essential equipment such as binoculars,

cameras and phones.

g maintaining trails, tourist facilities and ranger

shelters, to foster tourist development.

g making capital purchases such as jeeps and

fire trucks.

g implementing species reintroduction projects.

g paying adequate salaries to rangers.

Help protect the Caucasus’ unique

natural heritage:

By 2015 CNF aims to support 15

parks covering 1.5 million acres in

Armenia and Georgia.

Recognized as one of only 34 “biodiversity

hotspots” worldwide, the Caucasus

ecoregion boasts over 1,650 indigenous

plants and animals and 9 of 11 climate

zones in an area about the size of France.

This spectacular wilderness ranges from

semi-desert to high tundra—from subtropical

beaches to alpine meadows. But it is

threatened by poaching, logging, pollution

and other human activities that lead to

habitat degradation, decline of species

populations and overall loss of biodiversity.

Protected areas are crucial to conservation

efforts, which is why CNF is focusing its

efforts on ensuring the future of 15 of the

largest parks in the South Caucasus. CNF

works with local government agencies to

develop effective management strategies

and long-range planning that emphasizes

transparency and accountability.

It’s not too late!Protected habitat, trainedrangers, monitoring and patrolscan secure the future of theCaucasus leopard—but withonly 100 left in the ecoregion weneed to act now!

Upcoming CNF Projects

Lagodekhi National Park celebrates 100 years!

Located in eastern Georgia, Lagodekhi is the

Caucasus’ oldest protected area. CNF is helping

fund the renovation of the visitors center and

tourist hiking trails in anticipation of the park’s

100th anniversary in 2012.

Dilijan National Park Red Deer Reintroduction

Dilijan’s 84,000 acres of pristine

forests were once home to the

Caucasian red deer. The unique

sub-species is one of the

region’s most endangered

animals. CNF is teaming up with

WWF to bring this beautiful animal back to

Armenia.

The First Transboundary Park

In 2013 CNF aims to work with

the first transboundary park in

the South Caucasus. Lake Arpi

National Park, in northwestern

Armenia, and Javakheti

National Park, just across the

border in Georgia, together make up a spectacular

mountain plateau. The area houses grasslands,

lakes and wetlands unique to the Caucasus

ecoregion and is globally recognized as an

important staging and breeding ground for more

than 140 bird species.
