VARIETY, WORLD MUSIC THEMES IN ART MUSEUM BLUES & JAZZ FEST

Even more than usual, the Erie Art Museum’s annual Blues & Jazz Festival at Frontier Park on Saturday and Sunday, August 1 & 2, displays a panoply of musical styles. The Festival leads off with a traditional music group, the Barnstormers featuring the Rock Candy Cloggers at noon on Saturday.

From that start, the first “Blues” day of the Festival proceeds in a more mainstream direction, ending with a Chicago blues band, Nick Moss and the Flip

Tops, with special guest Lurrie Bell (pictured) at 6:00 PM, and blues singer Ronnie

Baker Borrks in the headline slot at 8:00 PM. Brooks, on guitar and vocals, will be accompanied by Steve Nixon – keyboards, C.J. Tucker – drums and Carlton Armstrong – bass guitar.

Sunday, traditionally the “Jazz” day at the festival, begins with three local jazz-related groups, and ends with two artists whose credentials rest more comfortably in world music than in jazz: At 6:00 PM singer Tessa Souter, whose Jamaican heritage is reflected in her vocal style will hold forth with her quartet, Jason Ennis – guitar, Gary Wang – bass and Conor Meechan – drums. Souter goes from Erie to the Blue Note in NYC, for a CD release party.

At 8:00 PM, the Festival presents Elaine and Susan Hoffman Watts and the Fabulous Shpielkehs, a klezner band.

JazzErie is a com-munity of music lovers and musicians and, a member-ship organization dedicated to sharing with children, adults and one another an awareness and love of

music, particularly jazz. JazzErie brings together people who want to listen to jazz, learn about it, play it and just live it.

Check out our website at www.jazzerie.com for complete

information on current and upcoming events.

JazzErie is a grateful recipient of support from the Arts Council of Erie.

Klezmer is an acquired taste – except for those raised on Eastern European Jewish dance music – combining elements of polkas, mazurkas, and other dances. For Elaine and daughter Susan it is a family tradition of three generations. Elaine, a drummer, graduated from Curtis Institute in Philadelphia and in 2007 was named a “National Heritage Fellow” by the National Endowment for the Arts.

LOCAL MUSICIANS DRESS UP BLUES & JAZZ FEST

In keeping with the Festival’s character of diversity, local groups presented this year will include:

“Dollar” Bill Crissman, a long-time, committed blues musician, originated his band while living in Nashville, TN. After moving back to Erie ten years ago, Crissman sought out

local musicians and revived the “Spare Change” with compatriots John Dreyer on drums and Larry Burr on bass.

Long grounded in bluegrass and country traditions, Hultman’s bluegrass/pop band, “Generic Grass” is a local staple. A few years ago, Carl developed his long-standing interest in jazz into a band which joined vocalist Barb Schwartz and his own guitar and vocal skills with reedist Dave Callaghan and bassist Dick Thompson. This group, joined by drummer Jerry Dedad, presents an array of tunes and styles from the ‘40’s

to more contemporary sounds – linked by a common thread of accessibility.

Valerie Brown grew up in Erie and became part of Erie’s musical tradition at age seven as one of the Horton Sisters. After a career in gospel, soul and blues music, which took her to L.A. and later Europe as a backup singer for many famous artists and soloist, she returned to Erie to raise her family, and is again becoming part of Erie’s musical life. In this performance she will be joined by guitarist Frank Singer, saxophonist Phil Popotnik, bassist Dave Blaetz, keyboardist Duane “Rusty” Jackson, drummer Norby Gavin, and percussionists Ron “Preach” Williams and Ringo Brill.

The eclectic theme continues with this local band which blends jazz, folk and funk traditions with creatively found sounds to make a kind of original, informed, delicious stew. Some songs are originals, some rearranged standards. Conceptually open, harmonically sophisticated, the group eludes classification. Personnel are Katie Chriest – vocals, guitar, Sheldon Peterson – guitar, backup vocals, Dave Blaetz – bass and Alan Chafee – percussion.

This project was supported by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency, through its regional arts funding partnership, Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts (PPA). State funding for the arts depends upon an annual appropriation by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and support from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. PPA is administered in this region by the Arts Council of Erie.

JAZZERIEPRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

by Ed Goebel

MEMBERSHIPS ARE CRUCIALEach JazzErie member has received

a membership renewal notice, plus a reminder if a renewal wasn’t received. Your renewal is especially important now since JazzErie probably won’t receive its usual $2,000 grant from the PA Council on the Arts, which is state funded, due to the state budget crisis.

To help keep jazz alive in Erie we need not only each JazzErie member’s renewal, but also new memberships from each member’s jazz loving friends. Please do whatever you can to get new members.

SPECIAL CHAUTAUQUA CONCERT OFFER

Two jazz fans can now buy a single Allegheny Jazz at Chautauqua concert ticket, at $300, and split the price so each would pay $150. Each jazz fan would attend two of the four concert sessions, held at the historic Athenaeum Hotel, and listen to 12 ½ hours of traditional swing-style jazz music played by 25-30 of the finest, often-recorded jazz musicians.

Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald would have felt at home at this concert.

The concert sessions are:

Friday, Sept. 18 5:30 PM – 1:00 AMSaturday, Sept. 19 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM 5:30 PM – 1:00 AMSunday, Sept. 20 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM

One jazz fan can go Friday and Sunday and the other on Saturday. Each hears 12 ½ hours of great jazz. It obviously works with two couples who split two tickets. Call Apryl Seivert @ 1-800-821-1881 at the Athenaeum for tickets or information. The great Athenaeum buffets, served during the concert, are extra.

All sessions are substantially continuous since the 25-30 musicians split into groups that play one after the other without breaks. I hope to see you there.

SPECIAL AUGUST JAZZ FM PROGRAMS

Summer means jazz and that is exactly what 88.5 JAZZ FM will provide with four radio specials this month.

Benny Goodman Centennial Tribute - Monday, August 24 from 3-5pm

The first program is a tribute to the “King of Swing” Benny Goodman produced and hosted by Mercyhurst College professor and JazzErie member Brian Sheridan. The show is a tribute of Goodman. The music on the show is from the recent Mosaic Records CD box set, “Classic Columbia and Okeh Benny Goodman Orchestra Sessions 1939-1958.”

“Goodman quit Victor Records in 1939, after creating hit after hit. He signed with Columbia Records and worked with legendary producer John Hammond. This show covers how Goodman dealt with the changing times in music,” said Sheridan.

Jazz: The 1959 Sound - Saturday, August 29 from 3-4pm

The second special on 88.5 JAZZ FM is called “Jazz: The 1959 Sound.” This is a program that is an exploration of some of the enduring jazz recordings of 1959. The one-hour radio special salutes the 50th anniversary of the landmark albums by Miles Davis (Kind of Blue, Sketches of Spain), Charles Mingus (Mingus Ah-Um), Dave Brubeck (Time Out) and others that helped make 1959 Jazz’s greatest year.

Perhaps you know her better as “Muffyn,” however, she has for some time assumed her real identity as Kayle’ Brecher and she is absolutely not like your yet-another-average female vocalist. Kayle’ is a complete musician who composes, writes lyrics, arranges and vocalizes with skill, imagination, creativity and verve. From her fourth CD, “Spy Music,” we listen to the title work of the same name written by regional guitarist Sheldon Peterson, with words by Kayle’. Mature, intelligent and engaging, the CD’s eleven selections are drawn from standards and originals performed by superlative musicians. Check out “Penchant Four Records,” breckerjazz, com.

Setting an emphatic groove is trombone “soul-man” Phil Ranelin. Heading up a nine piece ensemble with guests including Pharoah Sanders, Michael Session and Wendell Harrison the result is a no-nonsense, put-it-in-the-pocket date. Thanks to Al Lubiejewski for this 2004 recording from Wide Hive Records.

Saxophonist Chris Creek is a first tier New York player who trained at Webster U. and Berklee and performs impressively on “So It Seems,” an almost Latin rhythm with lyrical, winding melodies over a double-time feel. Brad Meldau and Kurt Rosenwinkel are in the band. How cool is that? Denny Kitchen chooses

a second selection for us. This CD contains two big bands and is from the “Collectibles” series. The bands of Stanley Wilson and Skip Martin revive pieces which transport you back to Rainbow Gardens when you were twenty three years old and so hip. Wilson’s “M Squid Theme” is a blast from the past.

Jim Metzler picks two for us now, the first

by Monty Alexander who, I believe, is ill represented by jazz radio. Monty can do it all: technique, feel, interpretation, swing, and he is a very sensitive accompanist. His take on “In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning” is artistically spare and sensitive. The immediately recognizable alto saxophone of Johnny Hodges is heard next. It is impossible to imagine the Ellington band without that sound produced by the sleepy-eyed gentleman who never looked at the music, and “Prelude to a Kiss” is a perfect vehicle for the velvet tone.

To conclude the evening, Al Lubiejewski returns with Pittsburgh organist Gene Ludwig. Gene is on the Hammond B-3 with Bob DeVos at the guitar and Billy James on drums. Three of the “burg’s” finest cook on Stanley Turrentine’s “Sugar.” To say it again, how cool is that?

Join us next time at the Erie Art Museum Annex, 20 East Fifth St., Thursday, August 20, 7:30 PM. Great recorded jazz, latest music news and stimulating discussion.

Miles Davis: Kind Of Blue - Sunday, August 30 from 7-8pm

If you are a Miles Davis fan, you will want to tune-in to this one-hour special that explores the creation and impact of Miles Davis’ album Kind of Blue. On two days in the spring of 1959, after a string of critically acclaimed and successful albums, Miles Davis recorded what would become Kind Of Blue. Nothing would ever be the same – for Jazz or for Miles Davis.

There’s no real way to tell why a record captures the imagination and attention of the world. Some do, some don’t. Miles Davis constantly recorded music, and almost all of it added to his popularity and critical acclaim. But over the years, Kind Of Blue found a larger and larger audience. Soon enough, it became the best selling Jazz album of all time.

Through the host Josh Jackson and interviews with musicians Herbie Hancock, Jimmy Cobb, Jackie McLean, David Amram and others, you will hear the story of the making of Kind Of Blue, as well as the lasting impact of this classic Jazz staple.

European Jazz Stage - Sunday Nights from 8-9pm

Finally, 88.5 JAZZ FM will introduce a new radio series. European Jazz Stage 2009 is a 13 part series hosted by Daniel Frankl and will begin

August 30th and run through November 22nd. This show doesn’t skip a beat with vocalist Bobby McFerrin, composer Maria Schneider, songwriter Wouter Hamel, and the big B3 sound of Mona Lisa Overdrive. Vocalist Lilian Vieira reawakens the Somba Soul of the 70’s and big bands Metropole Orchestra, The Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw and The Dutch Jazz Orchestra bring back the noise.

Archive performances from pianist Bill Evans and tenor man Stan Getz transport us back in time and then we flash forward to hear from the young names, like Rik Mol wail on his trumpet and Wolfert Brederode dance across the keys. Full of names you’ll know and names you’ll want to know, European Jazz Stage ’09 sets the summer at a sizzling pace.
