“I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love*

towards all the saints, and for this reason 16I do not cease to

give thanks for you as I remember you in my pray-

ers.” (Ephesians 1:15-16)

As I think about beginning my new call among you all

starting on August 15, this verse came to mind. I am hum-

bled and grateful for the confidence in which you have en-

trusted in me to become your next Sr. Pastor. The next several months

will be filled with adjustments for all of us. After 11 years I will be re-

learning the rhythm of serving one congregation, and being the primary

preacher in the same community. I will be learning names and listening

to stories of how God has been at work in your lives and the life of Love

of Christ. The current staff and leadership will be discovering my style of

leading and how our gifts might complement one another for the sake of

living out Christ’s mission. I was recently asked, “In my first 100 days

what do I want to accomplish?” My answer was simple, “I plan to invest

in intentional listening to and having conversations with the staff, the key

leadership, and offer opportunities for me to meet individually and in

small groups with the disciples at Love of Christ.” God has already been

doing good things in and through the followers of Christ in this place. I

want to celebrate that as well as encourage all of us to keep listening to

what God is up to both inside and outside the circle of this community.

As Barb and I have been praying for you, I ask that you continue to keep

us in prayer as a new chapter in our lives is about to be written. I also

encourage you to give thanks for the faithful interim leadership of Pastor

Dennis Hagstrom and for the continued service of Pastor Ken Lentz.

From Pastor Dennis… From Pastor Ken

TEMPUS FUGIT – TIME FLIES! I’m amazed at how quickly these last 6 months have passed since I became Interim Senior Pastor at Love of Christ. Time flies when

an experience is enjoyable and fulfilling. I have been enriched over the past 6 months and am very grateful for this time with you. I appreciated your warm welcome and have enjoyed being with you. My special thanks to your great Love of Christ staff and Board. Sun-day, August 13, will be my last day here as I return to retirement. My plans include enjoy-ing a vacation trip with my family and working around the house. I am open to serving as an interim in another congregation, eventually. A new future for Love of Christ begins now! You have called Pastor Steve Talmage to become your new shepherd and leader. I have confidence that his gifts will be a real blessing to you and enhance your life together as a congregation. This is a unique transition for both you and him, as Pastor Talmage comes as former synod bishop. Please support him, get to know him, and pray for him and his family. Love of Christ has remained solid and alive during these last two years of challenging transition. God is faithful and so are you! You have come to know Pastor Joe Dillon, Pastor Ken Lentz and me. Pastor Steve comes with his own abilities, knowledge and spiritual gifts. He will share his thoughts and goals with you and will want to learn your hopes and dreams for the future. Please get to know Pastor Steve through conversations and service with him. I look forward to God’s future for Love of Christ Lutheran Church, where you, disciples of Jesus, faithfully worship, welcome, grow, and serve together. I pray that the Holy Spirit will continue to empower and enrich you in all of your ministries! God’s peace and blessings,

Celebrating the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation Luther’s Contemporary: Pope Leo X Luther’s greatest papal antagonist in the Church of Rome was a member of the Medici family in Florence crowned Leo X in 1513 at age 37, the last non-priest to receive the papal office. He had already be-come a cardinal at the age of 17, having already been named for the office at the age of 8. Luther butted heads with Leo in 1517 when he published the 95 Theses, attacking the sale of indulgences in Germany to pay for the building of St. Peter’s Basilica. Pope Leo ordered the Vicar-General of the Augustinians to silence Luther in February, 1518. Modern scholars blame Leo for not understanding the reality and widespread depth of the disfavor of the corrupt papacy by the masses. Luther attacked the pope openly in his two powerful treatises of 1520, “The Babylonian Captivity” and “Appeal to the German Rulers,” but was convinced by Karl von Miltitz, an officer of the papal court, to apol-ogize to Leo and humor him. This Luther agreed to do in a letter attached to his treatise “The Freedom of the Christian.” Luther praised Leo for being a well bred, well meaning leader of the Church and suggested that Leo had been misrepresented by Johannes Eck and other papal advisors (Luther called them, “beasts.”) who were giving Leo bad advice. With tongue in cheek, Luther suggested that Leo con-sider leaving the office of the pope and retreat as a common priest to the countryside and help Luther introduce the reformation. (Leo did not take Luther’s advice.) Instead, Leo issued his bull, “Exurge Domini” and threatened to excommunicate Luther unless Luther recant in 60 days. Luther re-sponded by ceremoniously burning the papal bull under a large oak tree outside the Elster Gate at Wittenberg. The pope kept his promise when he issued another papal bull in January, 1521, formally excom-municating Luther. Pope Leo can hardly be designated as a Christian. He adored the Greek and Roman myths of the pantheons of the gods. He is quoted as saying, “Thanks to the fable of Christ, we can enjoy the papacy” and also, “Let us enjoy the papacy since God has given it to us.” Modern historian Barbara Tuchman accuses Leo of precipitating the Protestant reformation. “He was cultured, though religiously devout (outwardly), and hedonist.” Leo squandered the papal treasury so laboriously enriched by his predecessor, Julius II. His sale of indulgences and papal offices did not provide enough income to support his party life style, purchase of art, the payment of court musicians, and hunting trips. One biographer accuses him of “idle and selfish amusements,” including romping around on his pet elephant, Hanno. More than several banks and indi-viduals were ruined when Leo died relatively early at the age of 46 in 1521 of bronco pneumonia. Luther continued his war against the papacy after Leo’s death but was able to retire to a quieter university life after his “trial” at the Diet of Worms in the Spring of 1521 and his subse-quent ten-month “exile” at the Wartburg Castle.

All I ask is that, if you are serious about your participation, attend rehearsals and practice a little bit on your own. I assure you that if you commit to ten weeks of singing in the cantata, you will get hooked! The fellowship and enjoyment of participating in the cantata comes main-ly during the rehearsals. Here are the rehearsal dates: 7-8:15p.m. in the sanctuary Thursdays, October 5, 12, 19, 26, November 2, 9, 16, 30, December 7, 14 & Saturday, Dec. 16 (dress rehearsal from 9am to 12pm in COC). These dates are coming quickly and we need to put them on the calendar now. Music will be

distributed at the Oct. 5th rehearsal at 7pm in the sanctuary. I look forward to having you sing with us this year! If you have any questions, contact me at 480-981-6199 X32 or [email protected].

Music Ministry (Continued)

Please start thinking about the Music Dinner and Auction on December 1. If you are cleaning out drawers or closets and find any really nice things that you may want to part with, save them in a special spot to donate to the auction!!

We would truly appreciate it ………..we count on our earnings from that event to help out with our music expenses. You might be happy that in return you have an empty clos-et! If you are a craft person or like to make things, we’d love to have your contributions

for the auction. Thanks! Jung Csuy

This is a beautiful event held in the COC. There are 25 ta-bles, each decorated differently by a table host with her own special place settings and tablescape. The tables alone are amazing. But wait, there will also be a silent auc-tion, catered dinner from Carrabba’s, and a performance done by singer and guitarist, Guillermo Ontiveros, Ivan On-tiveros at the drums, the main lead singer, Marcus Smith, a bass guitarist, Carlos Clayton, and Jung Csuy at the key-board. This is a newly formed group that will blow your mind. Everyone in the group is an accomplished musician, together they are dynamite!! They will perform Christian music and also some 'oldies but goodies' that you can sing along to and have a great time. This team of musicians are worth the price of admission, wait till you hear them!

If you are interested in hosting a table, you are asked to provide table settings for 8 and decorate the table in any theme or style. You are not responsible to fill your table with guests; however, we encourage you to invite family, friends and neighbors. We will need 25 hosts.

If table hosting doesn’t interest you, we are also looking for volunteers to help the night of the event. We also

need silent auction donations that will bring out the attendees’ competitive nature to win that great item! Maybe you have a cabin that you would be interest-ed in donating as a weekend get-away, or you may be a world class chef and donate a homemade gourmet dinner or you may be crafty and want to create a themed basket full of great things.

Please contact Ginny Williams at 602-818-8156 or via email at [email protected] to sign up as a table host, volun-teer or ask any questions about the event or possible auc-tion items. Sign up sheets for table hosts and volunteers will be available beginning August 15th.

Tickets will go on sale for all guests beginning Sunday, Oc-tober 29th. . Look for us each week until the day of the event.

The entire music ministry team would like to thank every-one for helping to make this a Five Star fundraising event so that we can continue to provide great music for our congregation.

Naomi Circle They meet the 2nd Monday of the month September—May. We will meet on Sept. 11, 1pm. Mona Dewey will be hosting. All Women Welcome!

The Crafting and Chatting Women [C & C] have completed many projects already this year. Early in the year, we completed 83 teddy bears, 24 dolls and 12 scarves. They were all sent with the Arizona Lutherans that visited Sene-gal, Africa. Then we completed over 100 BLESSING BOXES. These are boxes filled with personal toiletry items, pajamas, teddy bears, children books, coloring books and crayons. These are given to the foster children that are processed through LSMS. Children, that are placed in a home have a personal belonging with these boxes. The latest project that has been a phenomenal success are the BLESSING BAGS. These are for our congregation members to give out to homeless wherever we encounter them. The BAGS are for immediate use for a homeless per-son. They include personal toiletry items, socks, washcloths, individual tissues, chap stick, sunscreen and other miscel-laneous items. We suggest that before the bags are given out, that a snack and bottle of water be added. Already, this summer, our congregation has picked up and given out over 120 bags. We will be making more. We have delivered 75 handmade, loved teddy bears to the Banner Cardon Children's Hospital. At present, the group is working on many teddy bears to donate to the fire stations in Mesa. These are given to a child at an accident site, fire or when needed. We ask that if you want to help us with any of these projects. Any of the items mentioned in this article would be helpful. Incidentally, we will accept any fabric, craft items, ribbon or yarn. We also accept monetary contributions or gift cards. You many contact Karen Wenzel 480-890-8692, Barbie Berry 602-705-3139 or Karla Harvey 480-262-7666.

The Book Nook offers many novels by current authors written in the last 10 years. Many on the shelves are newer than that. The summer is still hot and long. Wouldn't a novel written by a favorite author make the summer a

little more enjoyable? Please stop in and find a book or

two to help with the boredom. We also carry large

print books. We would also like to thank everyone that donated books in the past. It helps keep our shelves stocked with new books and helps us earn money for groups at LOC. Our latest contributions have been made to VBS and the kids musical that is coming up at the end of July. We can't do this without your help. By donating and purchasing at the Book Nook, small groups at the church keep LOC the vibrant church it is! Penny Day

Our book selection for September 10 is News Of The World by Pau-lette Jiles. It is one of the books that is a finalist for the National Book Award. We will not have cop-ies for sale in the Book Nook. I

would be glad to special order one if you would like a copy. Here is a synopsis of the book: In the aftermath of the Civil War, an aging itinerant news reader agrees to transport a young captive of the Kiowa back to her people in this exquisitely rendered, morally complex, multilayered novel of historical fiction from the author of Enemy Women that explores the

boundaries of family, responsibility, honor, and trust. In the wake of the Civil War, Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd travels through northern Texas, giving live readings from newspapers to paying audiences hungry for news of the world. An elderly widower who has lived through three wars and fought in two of them, the captain enjoys his rootless, solitary existence. In Wichita Falls, he is offered a $50 gold piece to deliver a young orphan to her relatives in San Antonio. Four years earlier, a band of Kiowa raiders killed Johanna’s parents and sister; sparing the little girl, they raised her as one of their own. Recently rescued by the U.S. army, the ten-year-old has once again been torn away from the only home she knows. Their 400-mile journey south through unsettled territory and unforgiving terrain proves difficult and at times dan-gerous. Johanna has forgotten the English language, tries to escape at every opportunity, throws away her shoes, and refuses to act “civilized.” Yet as the miles pass, the two lonely survivors tentatively begin to trust each oth-er, forming a bond that marks the difference between life and death in this treacherous land. Arriving in San Antonio, the reunion is neither happy nor welcome. The captain must hand Johanna over to an aunt and uncle she does not remember—strangers who regard her as an unwanted burden. A respectable man, Captain Kidd is faced with a terrible choice: abandon the girl to her fate or become—in the eyes of the law—a kidnapper himself. The book club will meet in the COC nursery after the 9:00 service. Please grab a cup of coffee and join us.

very quickly so reserve your spots starting September 10th!

Upcoming Dates:

Thursday November 2 – Saturday November 4, 2017 – “MobilePack” Meal Packing in the COC

Innessa’s Story of Hope (How the meals you pack make a difference)

When bombs started falling in their village in Ukraine, Inessa’s family hid with 26 others from their church in an underground

bunker for three long, frightening days. Before they knew it, they ran out of food and water. Their pastor risked his life to climb

out of the safety of the bunker and find his car so they could escape the bombing. He then spent many dangerous hours transport-

ing everyone to another village several hours away.

There they found an abandoned school and turned it into an impromptu center for internally displaced persons.* Displaced and on

the run from the fighting, Inessa’s family couldn’t return home. Their lives were shattered. Inessa became scared of everything.

She started having nightmares. Because YOU care, our food partner Mission Eurasia was able to give the family MannaPack™

Rice so they could survive. Soon, Inessa’s parents were able to move to a different village and find work. They don’t make much

money, but thanks to the MannaPack meals you’re sending, they don’t have to worry about where their next meal is coming from.

Instead they can focus on sending Inessa and her sister to school.

The family is finding hope again, even in the midst of the challenges they are facing. They know they can rely on you.

Inessa is healing, too. She isn’t afraid of loud noises anymore. She stopped having as many nightmares. She started smiling again.

And she’s making many new friends at school. Thank you for unleashing the power of food in Inessa’s life. You put the hope

and sparkle back into her eyes. “One day, peace will come back to Ukraine and kids won’t have to hide in dark cellars anymore,”

she said.

We say amen to that. Thank you for providing this hope.

Online Giving Did you know that you can go onto our website (loveofchristchurch.net) or scan the QR Code to the right and make a contribu-tion?

Register (one time only)

Indicate the amount you would like to contribute. “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” –

Jesus, Matthew 6:21 Jesus taught that how we handle our money is an indicator of our hearts, and Paul taught that we should give cheerfully and sacrificially in response to the love of God. Giv-ing is a central theme of the Bible, and at Love of Christ we invite our regular attendees and members to give in our weekend services or by mailing in their contributions. We are now pleased to offer the option of giving online. In our digital age with online shopping, online bill pay, Ebay, and Amazon, Love of Christ has chosen to make online tithing and giving

available to those who are interested. You can give online by either check or credit/debit card. We believe that living “debt free” is a worthy goal for all Christians. Online giving does involve the use of credit and debit transactions and makes no distinction between the two. We offer this option only as a convenience and we strongly urge you to use your credit card only as a payment method, never to incur debt. However, if you intend to pay off your balance each month, we believe that is an issue of conscience and leave that between you, God, and your fre-quent flier miles. With online giving, you can give your tithe to Love of Christ and also support our missionaries and mis-sion trips. Online giving will be counted toward your regular yearly giving and will appear in your year-end giving state-ment for tax purposes, along with all other contributions.

“Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion,

for God loves a cheerful giver.” – 2 Corinthians 9:7 For more information visit us online at loveofchrist-church.net or contact Dick Beckman at 480-981-6199 x21.

The SIMPLY GIVING Program What’s the easiest way to prepare your offer-ing? By using Simply Giving you have an easy way to have your offering transferred automati-cally from your account on a regular basis. This makes it easy for you to know you are always current and it also assists the church with our recordkeeping. Visit the Ministry Tables on Sunday for a brochure or contact Dick Beckman at 480 981 6199 x21.

Are you a “Thrivent Financial for Lutherans” member?

Habitat for Humanity

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY - OUR 14TH HOME DEDICATED! On Saturday, July 8th, Pastor Hagstrom

helped officiate as we blessed and dedicated the three-story townhouse that we built in Tempe. At the last minute,

the Mejia family decided that, due to the lack of back yard space for their three children and dogs, and that there was

no place for them to park his needed work truck, they would wait until another free-standing home became available.

The sweat equity that the family put into this home will be applied to their new home. The home we built will therefore

become a blessing to an as-yet to be identified qualified family. In the meantime, this home will become a “model

home” for potential families that opt to purchase one of the 16 townhouses being built on the Tempe site. THANK

YOU to all of the Love of Christ SAINTS that took advantage of the Arizona Tax Credits for the

Working Poor to make a no-cost donation, as well as the five families that provided lunches, and the

individuals that actually participated in building this beautiful home!

The homes are NOT given to the homeowners. At the time of the home completion and dedication,

the homeowners make their first payment on a profit-free mortgage, and the average payment is

about 25% of their income, which includes the principal, property taxes, homeowner’s insurance,

and a maintenance account. These funds are then used by Habitat to build even more homes. For

additional information on the Christian principles that guide Habitat for Humanity, visit

www.habitatcaz.org or call me at 480-985-8757.

$30K for 30 Years Update! As a part of our 30th anniversary celebration as a congregation, we initiated a drive last No-vember to raise $30,000, with the funds to be equally divided between paying-off our new electronic signage, and paying-forward a stimulus to newly-organized Crossroads Lutheran Church which is located just south of us in San Tan Valley, Arizona. Donations of $6K each were made to the sign and Crossroads Lutheran Church. We still owe $11K on the sign.

30th anniversary envelopes are available in main entrances to Sanctuary and COC. We pray that the Holy Spirit will lead you to make a donation if you have not yet done so.
