The ‘Catholic Way’

Before you begin reading this message, ask yourself: What is the ‘Catholic Way’ to live your life? I’m not asking you to answer this questions in words; rather, I’m asking for you to consider how your Faith

actually affects the way you live your life: your prayer life, your family life, your work life, your play life, the way

you make decisions when nobody can see. How do you decide what’s right and what’s wrong, what’s important

and what’s not? How much do you rely on God to get you through those challenges that create the most tension

and anxiety in your life?

The Catholic Way is the way of simplicity. This is not to be confused with ‘the easy way’; in fact, just the opposite. The

Catholic Way is humble, forgiving, resilient, patient, generous, courageous and gentle. Most of these are not attributes associated with success in today’s day and age, but they used to be. In fact, for almost 2,000 years, they defined the lives of great Catholics – those we know about and those we do not. We consider the humility of Francis of Assisi and Mother Teresa. We marvel the resilience of St Monica and the courage of John Paul II and Maximillian Kolbe. We take solace in knowing that a flawed man like St Peter can learn to allow himself to be used by God to accomplish amazing things. As Catholics, our Sunday obligation is not simply about showing up for Mass, but living the Catholic Way every day so that we can celebrate it with others in our Faith Community. When we bring who we are – the bright spots and the warts – to our shared celebration, we become an authentic assembly of disciples ready to receive the Creator and commune with Him in the Eucharist. And, having been nourished to the very core of our existence, we recommit to taking on the challenges of living life the Catholic Way. Allow me a moment to honor a man who committed himself to living the Catholic Way. Most of you would not know him, he lived an hour west of us in Westfield. Two weeks ago, on a Saturday, Bill Boneberg was playing with his grandchildren when a call came in that a power line had dropped so low that it threatened the life of a grandmother and her four-year old grandchild. Bill had worked around power lines all his life, having retired from National Grid and now serving as the superintendent for Westfield Electric. Bill left his family and responded, arriving before his crew. Assessing the situation, he took action that would protect those two lives, but place his life in danger. As he moved the line, something gave way and the line dropped on Bill and took his life. Bill was a deacon; he was a year behind me in formation. His call to ministry enfolded his faith journey and commitment.

Deacon Bill had figured it out; he had learned how to serve and love those whom the Lord placed in his life. He died in

the manner in which he lived – courageous and generous; the Catholic Way. As often happens when we lose someone we know, I have been thinking a lot about Deacon Bill over these past few weeks. But more, I’ve been asking myself the same question I asked you at the beginning - - - How well do I live the Catholic Way, every day? And I wish I had a better answer…

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord….

God bless, Deacon John

Young Adult & Family

Ministry; Adult Education This year’s Adult Education program will focus on learning and then using the concepts in the book Rebuilt, written by Fr. Michael White and Thomas Corcoran. Using these ideas and approaches, we will develop and implement new ways to better serve our Young Adults (20’s-30;s) and Families.

After years of learning how to be better followers of Christ, this year we focus on practicing all that we have learned to become Disciples in Action and help strengthen, develop and expand the foundation of the future of our parish through service and support to this very important segment of our parish.

It’s going to be an exciting year! We will learn, grow, share, invite and support each other as we help the parish continue its ministry of service to those who are and who want to be members of the Pompeii Family. As we serve others, we will also grow in our own understanding and appreciation for our Catholic Faith.

We will be meeting each Thursday night, beginning on September 18th, in the Ministry Center, 129 Laverack, at 7:00 PM. Please purchase a copy of the

book and begin reading...

Faith Moment Reflection

for Today’s Readings Getting people to agree about some things - in our families, neighborhoods, work, and church - can take a good deal of compromise. Our readings today remind us that, both in our everyday lives and in our spiritual lives, we are never totally alone nor do we ever act alone. Compromise is essential. Take our faith community as an example. Our deepest identity is found not in ourselves but in community with God and others. In our church, we are accountable to one another, as we relate, reconcile and pray together, showing our commitment to God and his living presence among us. When rifts among members disrupt the community, it weakens our ability to make God’s presence visible. When we compromise, when we reach agreement, we can grow in the consciousness that we are the presence of God for one another. When we gather, he is in our midst.
