From the rapidly fleeting light effects to uncomfortable weather conditions, it can sometimes feel overwhelming to know where to begin. Fortunately, a path has been cleared by master painters before us, and we have the benefit today to learn from their brilliant discoveries. In this three-day intensive course, students will explore the techniques of the great landscape artists to strategize an approach, prioritize information, and simplify details by painting directly from high-res landscape masterpieces. ey will also be familiarized with how these skills can be taken out of the studio when painting en pleinair, and how to paint quickly as well as to choose a composition that depicts a clear vision that the painter wants to portray. is workshop is designed to cater toward all skill levels. FRIDAY - SUNDAY, February 14-16, 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Instructor: Brock Larson Limit 14 students $325 Brock Larson (b. 1991) first began drawing at a very early age under the guidance of his father, Jeffrey T. Larson as well as his grandfather, Marvin Espe. He started his approach to academic practice in high school with Charles Bargue plates, master copies, and cast drawings before moving to Minneapolis to pursue a formal education at the Atelier Program of Fine Art. He studied full-time in the twin cities for five years alongside attending workshops. In his final year of school, Brock began teaching evening classes for two years prior to moving back to his hometown area of Duluth, to help his father establish a similar studio training program, the Great Lakes Academy of Fine Art. Together, they spent two years researching and designing the curriculum before eighteen months of renovating an old catholic church into an ideal studio setting for students. Here, they currently instruct the full-time program and teach workshops. LANDSCAPE MASTER CLASS WITH MARY PETTIS is workshop by ARC Living Master, Mary Pettis, is especially designed to inspire and inform artists who have a working knowledge of oil painting and are now ready to move towards more personally expressive and masterful paintings, particularly in the art of landscape. Embracing both classical principles and proven plein air techniques from the greatest contemporary schools of thought, Mary is devoted to helping painters open their hearts and minds to their artistic purpose; to give them the advanced tools and exercises that will guide them on their path. Mary’s lectures, demos and critiques will provide insights into: 1) Composing the landscape forms in a simple and direct way, using armatures, and maintaining a powerful expression from the first 12 minutes on; 2) e secrets of accurately capturing light and atmosphere; 3) Knowing how to edit the abundance of outdoor information to create a true impression of sentiment through personal choice of tone and colors, specifically; 4) Avoiding the pitfalls of making your painting too formulaic, illustrative or tight-looking; 5) e tools, tips and a method to perfect the outdoor oil sketch: your “notes to yourself!”; 5) A means to create your own curriculum and goals to carry you forward. January - May 2020 5-DAY FIGURE DRAWING WORKSHOP WITH MACKENZIE SWENSON Figure Drawing with Emphasis on Structure and Conceptualized Form Over a period of five days, students will create a figure drawing from life on toned paper using graphite and white chalk. They will be guided through the process clearly and methodically. This will include a discussion of how to analyze the pose before beginning, how to create a block-in that emphasizes gesture, accurate proportion and key structural and anatomical points, and finally how to render the form based on the light source and a sculptural understanding of the model. She has exhibited in galleries throughout the United States, including Eleventh Street Arts and Robert Simon Fine Art in New York City. THE ART OF FRAMING: CREATING A DYNAMIC DUO - WITH JOY WOLFE OF FINE ART ADVOCATES is class includes a lecture and a hands on framing workshop. For the lecture Joy will be discussing how to present your artwork professionally on an artists budget. Joy will show ways to reuse frames, select new frames and discuss what are the pieces that stand out in a show. He first started sculpting at his family’s foundry, Shoop’s American Bronze Casting. Here he apprenticed under his father and learned many aspects of sculpting and production. In 1993 James began study at e Art Students League, e National Academy of Design and e New York Academy of Art. During this period he concentrated on the study of the figure, learning about anatomy, form, composition and technique. While in New York, he began his commercial business Shoop Sculptural Design. Today it is a premium studio specializing in 3-D sculpting, mold making, casting in bronze, resins, hydra stone and aluminum, paint masters, clothing/ costume construction and pattern making. James has created a body of work that expresses his passions and interpretation of the human form. It always does. Spring time painting is a great way get out aſter the long winter and jump start your plein air painting practice for the upcoming season. is workshop will focus on breaking down the painting process into logical steps to simplify the complexity of the landscape. Each day we will work on exercises that build on one another to enhance understanding of the process. Day 1 we will discuss the value structure in the landscape and how light affects that value structure. Day 2 will be all about color! We will talk about color relativity, thinking about color as value, and organizing value/color shapes in a way that creates dynamic starts. Spring in Minnesota is always a surprise! Day 3 will be further discussion on how light works, and specific information tailored to the landscape we get (snow/gray/spring green). Location to be announced closer to class date. The original Atelier, founded by Richard Lack in 1970 as a not for profit corporation, has based its aesthetic philosophy on a direct lineage to the Boston school of American Impressionists and the French Academy. The Atelier, co-directed by Dale Redpath and Cyd Wicker, closely follows these original precepts offering students the opportunity to master the fundamental principles in the classical discipline of realistic drawing and painting. In all of The Atelier’s classes, emphasis is placed on developing the student’s ability to accurately observe proportions and value relationships. Some instruction is given to the class as a whole, but most instruction is given on an individual basis. SPRING PLEIN AIR WORKSHOP WITH BRIDGET ERTELT Spring will come! It always does. Spring time painting is a great way get out after the long winter and jump start your plein air painting practice for the upcoming season. This workshop will focus on breaking down the painting process into logical steps to simplify the complexity of the landscape. Each day we will work on exercises that build on one another to enhance understanding of the process. Day 1 we will discuss the value structure in the landscape and how light affects that value structure. Day 2 will be all about color! We will talk about color relativity, thinking about color as value, and organizing value/color shapes in a way that creates dynamic starts. Spring in Minnesota is always a surprise! Day 3 will be further discussion on how light works, and specific information tailored to the landscape we get (snow/gray/spring green). Location to be announced closer to class date. INTRODUCTION TO CHARLES BARGUE DRAWING COURSE The goal of this 10-week course is to sharpen drawing ability and technique. Students will be guided through completing a single drawing from a reproduction in the Charles Bargue Drawing Course. The process will take students from the straight line

block in to the end stages and subtle finishing. Occasional class exercises will allow students to practice using a variety of tools and techniques. This course is an excellent precursor to sight-size cast drawing and appropriate for all skill levels. Copies will be completed in pencil. PORTRAIT - EVENING CLASSES Students will work from a live model in order to produce finished drawings and/or paintings. Students will work in pencil, charcoal, pastels or oils. COLOR II - EXPLORING COLOR: COLOR THEORY & COLOR MIXING Deepen your understanding of color and expand your color possibilities. We’ll put color theory into practice with exercises, and explore practical use of theory in various painting scenarios. Topics include ways to alter chroma, the

relative nature of color attributes, color harmony, simultaneous contrast, and more. Color 1 or similar, and previous painting experience are strongly recommended. TRADITIONAL WATERCOLOR This class is designed to accommodate both beginning and continuing students wishing to learn the basics of traditional watercolor. Composition, value, color mixing and design are taught in an atmosphere of helpful and friendly critiquing. Students learn techniques by doing studies of the masters, then applying those techniques to their own works from nature. ILLUSTRATION Explore your imagination! Illustration, at its most basic, is a story or idea told through a picture. It could be a picture of a dragon, an interpretation of an historical event, or simple human kindness. The possibilities seem endless. During this class, students will develop pictures based upon a classic story or self generated ideas. We will work through idea generation to preparatory work and on to a final picture. Emphasis will be placed on composition, and visual

storytelling. Students may choose to work in the medium with which they are comfortable. Christine has experience to support watercolor, colored pencil, pen and ink, or oil paint. DESIGNING AN INTERIOR PAINTING WITH A FIGURE This course is a must for a basic understanding on how to create an interior or room setting with a figure. Composition, perspective focal point, center of interest and lighting will be addressed. Emphasis will be on the preliminary elements of composing an interior with a figure. Students will be

guided through the process of creating thumbnail sketches, preliminary drawings, and color studies. The end goal is to understand how to think through the different elements of picture making for the fluid and successful completion of a composition that deals with a complex pictorial space. Materials needed include: black pen, pencil, charcoal, pointer, eraser, sketch pad, drawing board ( 12” x 16” or so), pencil or charcoal paper (12” x 16” or so), small canvases, primed boards, or watercolor paper (12” x 16” or so), and the material you need to paint (oil or watercolor). ONE-DAY FIGURE STUDIES IN OIL Students paint a new oil study each week working from the figure. With steady guidance from the instructor, the students will work to achieve a complete figure, starting by drawing in thin paint and striving for accuracy in proportion, value and color. COSTUMED FIGURE DRAWING & PAINTING Gain a better understanding of how to portray clothed figures. This 15-week class is broken into 3 poses, five days each. Emphasis is placed on form, gesture, and underlying structure. We’ll explore characteristics of fabric, fold types, and editing nature to serve the picture. Using the sight-size method, students will develop a minimum of 3 costumed figure studies. Depending on experience, students are welcome to work in pencil, charcoal, or oil paint. DRAWING TECHNIQUES This class offers basic information and methods to use for improving your technique with pencil. Information that will be covered includes drawing position and hand position, as well as purpose of shaving or sharpening the pencil. Discussion on the amount of pressure applied and learning whether you are a heavy or light handed person and how to work with your disposition, including how to use different pressures with hand positions. Soft to Hard pencil leads and the descriptions and purpose for each will be taught as well as the limitations of graphite compared to charcoal. A variety of paper will be discussed and used to demonstrate what effects you can gain with each technique. Judy Buckvold completed five years of full time training in classical realism at The Atelier. She attended the University of Minnesota in Duluth, before joining the art department at Dayton’s in Minneapolis. In Boston, she worked at Jordan Marsh in retail fashion. In New England her interest grew in portraiture and oil painting as a medium. She believes that technology is limited when it comes to expressing the human spirit, and that there will always be a need for fine art and tradition.Brian lewis majored in studio art and art history at the University of Minnesota prior to studying painting with Richard Lack. He currently teaches Basic Drawing and Painting at The Atelier in addition to maintaining his own studio in Minneapolis. Brian’s interests include portraiture, figurative work, still life and landscape. He is a Guild Member of the American Society of Classical Realism and exhibits in its salon, as well as in galleries in Minnesota, Colorado and New Mexico.christina diMeo enrolled at The Atelier seeking a solid academic training on which to build her painting career. She studied full time at The Atelier and at the Angel Academy of Art. Christina holds two degrees from the University of Minnesota in Graphic Design and Studio arts. DiMeo’s work has been displayed at several local venues including Minneapolis Institute of Arts Foot in the Door show. She has three paintings in the permanent collection of the University of Minnesota, currently on display at the Coffman Union. DiMeo’s charcoal work was included in the Artist for Artists Project 2014 Winners’ Catalog. ceceile hartleiB is a Realist/Impressionist painter. Originally from Ohio, where she began her training with Allan R. Banks, CeCeile relocated to Minnesota and studied for four years at Atelier LeSueur. This was followed by an additional year of advanced study with Stephen Gjertson. She has taught numerous classes and workshops at Atelier North, Edina Art Center, Minnetonka Center for the Arts and currently teaches at The Atelier. She is a member of Oil Painters of America, Midwest Watercolor Society, Minnesota Watercolor Society, American Impressionist Society, and the Outdoor Painters of Minnesota. Her work hangs in galleries in Minnesota and Ohio and in corporate and private collections internationally.Bridget ertelt is a contemporary realist/Impressionist painter. She was born in northern Minnesota, and was fortunate to have lessons in classical methods being taught in the art classes at her high school. It was there that she was first exposed to Plein Air Painting, which has become a passion of hers. After high school, Bridget received a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. Throughout her education and nursing career she continued to study art. After moving to the Twin Cities, Bridget became involved in Outdoor Painters of MN, and began taking workshops from many national contemporary artists. She discovered the Atelier in 2011, and took 4 years of part time classes before enrolling in, and graduating from The Atelier full time 4 year program. She is currently continuing to paint portraits, figures, and still life work. She has participated in many state plein air events, and has won several awards for her work. She enjoys traveling, and the challenge of painting many different types of landscapes. Website: www.BridgetErtelt.com.stacy andrews grew up with a passion and pursuit for beautiful and truthful art. She began formal training for three years with private instruction under the tutelage of a local artist in Ohio, before completing four years full time at The Atelier Studio Program of Fine Art. During the three years, she was taught the comparative method of drawing, Bargue drawings, casts from life, and the colouristic approach in painting. She received a Gold Key Award in 2012, and earned scholarships to the Portrait Society’s “Art of the Portrait” Conference. At this conference, she met many prolific artists, and briefly studied with Florida artist, Kerry Vosler. She has attended a workshop with Robert Liberace, learning his red chalk technique, as well as his drawing, and painting approach.wade ardery has had a lifelong passion for exploring the arts. In 2000, he received his bachelor’s in Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature from the University of Minnesota where he also began taking studio art courses in figure drawing, color theory, and painting. He discovered the Atelier part-time classes in 2012, enrolled in the full-time program in 2013, and graduated in 2019. He elected to incorporate cast drawing and painting during each year of his study, finally experimenting with adding color reflections into the casts. Wade is currently painting still life, landscape and portrait at his home studio in Roseville.

cyd wicker, Director and Full Time Instructor at The Atelier, attended West Texas State University in Canyon, Texas and Yale University School of Music and Art in Connecticut. While in college she was awarded an internship with the National Collection of Fine Arts at The Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. Cyd studied with Richard Lack for five years and then taught with him from 1983 until his retirement in 1992. Cyd co-directed The Atelier with Dale Redpath from 1992 until 2017. She has a long career as a portrait artist, beginning with commissioned

portraits of presidents Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton for The Presidential Museum. Nationally, her works hang in both private and public collections including Hennepin County Medical Research Center, the Federal Court Buildings in St. Paul and Minneapolis, the Judicial Center in St. Paul, The University of St. Thomas School of Law, The Federal Sentencing Commission in Washington D.C., and Federal Courts in Miami, Fl. laura tundel, Assistant Director and Full Time Instructor at The Atelier, received her bachelor’s degree in Fine Art and Communication Design from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. After college, she worked as a graphic designer and illustrator for several years before learning of the classical art training at The Atelier Studio Program of Fine Art. Laura completed her four years of full-time study at The Atelier and is now focusing on portrait commissions and still life paintings. Her work has been selected for several awards, including Finalist and Honorable Mention in the annual Art Renewal Center’s Salon and a finalist in “Drawing Magazine’s” Shades of Grey competition. christine Mitzuk, Full Time Instructor at The Atelier, earned her bachelor’s degree in Design Communication with a minor in Studio Arts from the University of Minnesota. She worked in Graphic Design for over seven years, making art in her spare time. Realizing she desired art more, she quit her job to attend the full time program at The Atelier. She completed 5 years of study in May 2011. Christine’s focus is narrative based imaginative art. She feeds her imagination through continued study of the figure and nature. andy sJodin, Full Time Instructor at The Atelier, holds a B.A. in Philosophy from St. John’s University (2004) and is a graduate of The Atelier (2014). As a painter, Sjodin is interested in the pursuit of a sophisticated language that can honestly communicate the subtlety of thought and emotion. As an educator, Sjodin strives to push students to think and see in a way that is intelligent and personal by helping them understand the rules of drawing and painting as well as their own process.

kenneth schweiger, Full Time Instructor at The Atelier, was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and graduated from DePaul University in Chicago, IL. After traveling to Japan and studying classical and contemporary works of art in Tokyo, Kenneth returned to Minneapolis where he completed 5 years of intensive drawing and painting at the Atelier and then continued his studies in New York. With patience and enthusiasm, Kenneth’s experience is an asset for student painters. “My goal in teaching the basic drawing class is to logically analyze the visual world and break it down into shapes, values, and edges.” Website: www.KennethSchweiger.com.

lynn Maderich is primarily known for her skilled portrayals of horses although she also enjoys painting dogs and people. Her paintings have won recognition from Art Renewal Center, The American Artists Professional League, Artists’ Magazine and The American Academy of Equine Art where she is a Signature Member. Lynn is also an Associate Member of the Society of Animal Artists. She has exhibited in a number of invitational shows and has taught equine drawing and painting workshops around the country. aMBer tritaBaugh has been drawing since childhood. She learned classical painting and drawing at The Atelier in Minneapolis, graduating in 2015. Amber also studied anatomy and sculpture with Jim Shoop, and continues learning through workshops. Amber shows her work at Studio Pintura and is a member of the Outdoor Painters of Minnesota. She is currently working in watercolor.
