Summary Objective To evaluate the performance of a specimen of a single-acting, single-leaf, doorset

when fitted with a range of smoke seals within the door frame jambs and head, and subjected to a test utilising the test method detailed within BS 476: Part 31, Section 31.1: 1983.

Approved Document B (Fire Safety) of the Building Regulations requires doorsets shall “have a leakage rate not exceeding 3 m3/m/hr (head and jambs only) when tested at 25 Pa under BS 476 Fire tests on building materials and structures, Section 31.1 Methods for measuring smoke penetration through doorsets and shutter assemblies, Method of measurement under ambient temperature conditions”

In the absence of other criteria, this guidance has been adopted in reporting the results of this test. The leakage rates at other pressures are also included in this report.

The doorset was subjected to 100,000 opening and closing cycles as required by CERTIFIRE TS 21.

Test Sponsor Reddiplex Limited, The Furlong, Droitwich, Worcestershire, WR9 0RJ.

Summary of Tested Specimen

The specimen doorset had overall nominal dimensions of 2080 mm high by 1007 mm wide and incorporated a door leaf of overall dimensions 2040 mm high by 936 mm wide by 44 mm thick. The doorset was fixed within a plywood faced, timber stud partition, to form the test construction such that it opened away from the test rig.

The test series comprised two different seals. For the first test the door frame was fitted with a smoke seal referenced ‘Acoustic Corner Seal R9946’. The second test comprised a ‘Acoustic Twin Fin R9945’ seal. Each seal was continuous around the entire doorset perimeter (head and jambs). The doorset was rendered unlatched.

Full details of the exact manner of installation are included in the Schedule of Components.

Test Procedure Introduction Guidance with respect to the performance of fire doors required to resist the

passage of smoke at ambient temperature conditions is given in Approved Document B (Fire Safety) of the Building Regulations.

Certain aspects of some test specifications are open to different interpretations. The Fire Test Study Group has identified a number of such areas and has agreed Resolutions which define common agreement of interpretations between fire test laboratories which are members of the Group. Where such Resolutions are applicable to this test they have been followed.

Instruction to test

The tests were conducted on the 5th, 12th and 17th October 2007 on behalf of Reddiplex Limited.

Test Specimen Construction

A comprehensive description of the test construction is given in the Schedule of Components. The description is based on a detailed survey of the specimen and information supplied by the sponsor of the test.

Installation The specimen seals were supplied by the test sponsor on the day of test. Bodycote warringtonfire was not involved in any selection or sampling procedures of the specimens or any of the components.

A representative of Bodycote warringtonfire installed the doorset within the partition on the 4th October 2007.

Preparation The tests were conducted in accordance with the procedures specified in BS 476: Part 31: Section 31.1: 1983.

Prior to the evaluation the gaps between the leaf and the frame were measured and the values recorded. The door gaps were then sealed and the differential pressures were applied. The leakage rates measured were recorded as the base rig leakage. The door gaps were then unsealed and the leakage measured at the same differential pressures. The above procedure was then repeated with the airflow in the opposite direction.

The doorset was then subjected to 100,000 opening and closing cycles as defined with CERTIFIRE TS21, the above tests were then repeated to determine the effects on the leakage performance.

Test Data and Information General The following data, which was recorded during the tests, is included in the report:

• Table of the net leakage through the specimen at specified pressure differentials.

• Graph of the net leakages through the specimen at specified pressure differentials.

The ambient air temperature in the vicinity of the test construction at the start of the test was 17°C with no variation during the test.

Leakage Calculation

The readings were corrected for each leakage measurement to a reference temperature of 20°C and standard atmospheric pressure (1 atmosphere equals 101325 Pa) utilising the following formula:

Q = Qa x (Pa + p) x 293.15 x (1 - 0.3795) x Mw x __Es__

101325 (Ta + 273.15) 100 Pa + p Where Q = Adjusted rate of air flow (m3/h)

Qa = Measured rate of airflow (m3/h) p = Pressure increase (Pa) Pa = Barometric Pressure (Pa) Ta = Air temperature (°C) Mw = Relative Humidity (%) Es = Saturated water vapour pressure (Pa)

WF Report No. 167811/A Page 17 of 18

Performance Criterion Guidance with respect to the performance of fire doors required to resist the

passage of smoke at ambient temperature conditions is given in Approved Document B (Fire Safety) of the Building Regulations which requires doorsets shall “have a leakage rate not exceeding 3 m3/m/hr (head and jambs only) when tested at 25 Pa under BS 476 Fire tests on building materials and structures, Section 31.1 Methods for measuring smoke penetration through doorsets and shutter assemblies, Method of measurement under ambient temperature conditions”

In the absence of other criteria, this guidance has been adopted in reporting the results of this test, which are detailed below. The leakage rates at other pressures are also included in this report.

Ongoing Implications Limitations The results relate only to the behaviour of the specimen under the particular

conditions of test.

The test results relate only to the specimen tested. Application of the results to specimens of different dimensions or incorporating different components should be the subject of a design appraisal.

The dimensions of the gaps between the leaf and frame were measured and are detailed earlier in this report. The results of these tests are, therefore, limited to doorsets where the gap dimensions are similar to, but do not exceed those detailed in this report.

Review The specification and interpretation of fire test methods are the subject of ongoing development and refinement. Changes in associated legislation may also occur. For these reasons it is recommended that the relevance of test reports over five years old should be considered by the user. The laboratory that issued the report will be able to offer, on behalf of the legal owner, a review of the procedures adopted for a particular test to ensure that they are consistent with current practices, and if required may endorse the test report.

Conclusions Evaluation against objective

A specimen of a single-acting, single-leaf doorset fitted with a ‘Acoustic Corner Seal R9946’ and subsequently a ‘Acoustic Twin Fin R9945’ smoke seal has been subjected to a test in accordance with BS 476: Part 31, Section 31.1: 1983. In addition, the doorset was subjected to 100,000 opening and closing cycles as required by CERTIFIRE TS 21.

The performance of the specimens was assessed against the criteria detailed within the Standard and the following results obtained:

Leakage Rate at +25 Pa (m3/m/h)

Leakage Rate at -25 Pa (m3/m/h)
