NEWSLETTER A Message from the Principal 16 th February 2015 – Issue 2 I must give a big thank you to all of the teachers and parents this week who have been busy on several fronts. Our first Parent Information Evening was held on Wednesday and was very well attended. I understand that some families were unable to attend due to a lack of child minding services. I would encourage these families to contact the teacher for the relevant booklet that was issued on the night, which explains the requirements and expectations of each teacher. I am well aware that parents do not want these nights to run deep into the night, and so we will endeavor to keep them as short as possible. On Friday the 13th February we welcomed several guests from the Anglican Schools Commission (Inc.) and Parents with a short service to commemorate our classes commencing. The official opening of the School will be on the 8th May when we will invite the Archbishop of Perth, Roger Herft and many other special guests for our official opening. We had 20 late enrolments during the week, which resulted in the splitting of the Year 3 and 4 class. We welcome Mr Tim Crane as the new Year 3 teacher and hope that both he and the students settle in quickly. Mr Crane brings a wealth of experience from his previous employment at Scitech and we look forward to seeing his amazing science skills in action soon. With all the turmoil of week two, we were unable to produce our weekly newsletter. Our office has been inundated with new enrolment enquiries, and this has limited our ability to complete all that we would have liked. A school of the Anglican Schools Commission (Inc.)

NEWSLETTER  A  Message  from  the  Principal

16th  February  2015  –  Issue  2

I  must  give  a  big  thank  you  to  all  of  the  teachers  and  parents  this  week  who  have  been  busy  on  several  fronts.

Uniform  Shop

The  Uniform  shop  will  ONLY  be  open  Tuesday’s  from  8:30  to  12:00  and  again  after  school  till  4pm.

Please  note  that  the  House  shirts  have  arrived  and  can  be  purchased  from  the  Uniform  shop.

If  you  are  interested  in  earning  your  parent  commitment  hours,  and  have  some  time  to  spend  assisting  us,  then  we  have  many  tasks  that  need  completing.  These  include  setting  up  iPads  in  the  trolleys,  designing  garden  beds  for  planting,  as  well  as  many  other  tasks  that  are  lower  priority.      Good  luck  to  all  of  our  Year  5  and  6  students  who  are  at  Rottnest  this  week  from  Monday  the  16th  to  Wednesday  the  18th.  Many  thanks  to  Mr  Mornement  and  Ms  Lister  who  are  heading  over  with  the  students.    I  look  forward  to  seeing  you  around  the  grounds  as  you  drop  your  children  off  once  I  return  from  Rottnest.    Please  direct  all  pressing  enquiries  to  the  Administration  Office.

Co  Curricular  Program

Week  4  will  see  the  commencement  of  the  Co-‐Curricular  Program.  There  will  be  a  list  of  clubs  and  times  in  this  Friday’s  newsletter.  Music  will  start  with  Choir,  and  the  School  instrumental  program  will  start  soon.  I  will  be  looking  to  start  the  Martial  Arts  Club  and  a  Volleyball  Club.  If  you  have  any  special  skills  in  these  areas,  I  would  always  welcome  a  hand.  Some  teachers  will  be  focusing  more  on  academic  pursuits.    The  tennis  coaching  has  commenced  on  Friday  mornings  for  those  looking  for  a  Professional  Development  Program.  Matt  Birkett  had  14  students  on  Friday  on  our  brand  new  courts,  and  the  students  had  a  great  time.    I  would  like  to  stagger  these  events  so  that  students  may  be  able  to  select  more  than  one  activity.  As  a  general  rule,  Music  events  will  be  Tuesday  and  Thursday  mornings  and  Monday  and  Wednesday  afternoons.  This  leaves  sports  and  other  activities  to  fill  in  the  opposite  times.  Initially,  these  times  may  vary,  as  the  number  of  students  is  limited.

Swimming  Carnival

HELP  REQUIRED:    Tuesday  the  3rd  March  will  be  our  first  Swimming  Carnival.  THIS  IS  A  COMPULSORY  SCHOOL  DAY.  Any  student  not  attending  will  require  a  medical  certificate.  This  day  is  very  important  to  our  school  community.  All  students  should  aim  to  swim  a  race  and  support  their  house.  They  will  be  allowed  to  wear  coloured  items  to  get  behind  their  house.    I  will  need  the  help  of  several  parents  to  act  as  timekeepers  and  recorders.  I  will  also  need  some  lifeguards  to  swim  behind  the  younger  children  in  case  of  any  issues.    Please  contact  Ms  Tara  Campbell  to  sign  up  as  a  Swimming  Carnival  parent  helper.    The  carnival  will  provide  our  first  Inter  House  Competition  and  should  begin  the  rivalry  that  will  help  us  develop  some  school  spirit.    There  will  be  races  of  25m  in  Freestyle,  Backstroke,  Breaststroke  and  Butterfly.  We  would  like  children  to  compete  in  as  many  events  as  they  are  capable.  The  Year  5  and  6  students  will  also  be  offered  some  50  m  races.    The  carnival  also  will  have  some  novelty  events  to  encourage  the  less  confident  swimmers  to  get  involved.  Please  encourage  your  child  to  not  be  nervous,  and  try  as  many  events  as  they  can.

School  Fees

We  are  still  experiencing  problems  with  our  BPay,  the  bank  hope  to  have  it  fixed  by  tomorrow  –  17th  February  2015.

St  James’  Race  Team

Dust  off  your  bike  and  come  down  to  the  Alkimos  Sprout  Café  to  meet  other  parents.    Head  Cycle  coach  Chris  Howard  will  introduce  the  St  James  Cycling  program.    Parents  will  also  be  invited  to  join  some  free  cycling  lessons  designed  for  novice  and  ‘rusty’  riders  looking  to  improve  confidence  (and  a  good  excuse  for  a  coffee  and  chat).      Where:  Alkimos  Sprout  Café  (just  above  the  café  is  a  very  quiet  road  and  bikes  can  be  walked  easily  from  St  James’  Car  park).      When:  Commencing  Friday  20  February  at  9.00am  What:  Week  1,  Get-‐to-‐know-‐you  and  bike  safety  check.  What  to  bring:  bike  (if  you  have  don't  have  one,  we  have  a  couple  of  loan  bikes),  helmet,  comfortable  clothes  and  runners.      Free  Coffee  to  the  first  5  parents  who  RSVP  AND  bring  their  bike!  If  you  can’t  bring  your  bike,  you  are  still  welcome!

There  are  still  some  books  that  need  to  be  covered  in  contact.  If  you  would  like  to  help  us  by  covering  a  set,  please  let  the  front  office  know.  This  can  be  added  to  your  parent  commitment  hours.
