Eighty-eight Valley, Pigeon Val-ley, Higgins Rd and even on a section of State Highway 1 near Wai-iti. Although that’s frustrating for residents and businesses, she says it is potentially a matter of life or death for emergency services with callers unable to dial 111 from black spots.Nelson police wouldn’t comment on the issue because of contrac-tual restraints with their service provider but the Waimea Weekly understands they are frustrated by the cellphone black spots. Eighty-eight Valley farmer Ian

Parkes says their biggest problem is the snail-paced internet ser-vice. He says websites providing information on the weather, fi-nances and fertiliser programmes are an important tool for modern farmers and he “drinks a lot of coffee waiting to load those sites”. “We don’t get broadband so my secretary has to do all the com-puter work from her place in Richmond because it’s too slow up here. “We have a four million dollar business that employs 10 people and she should be operating it from here but she can’t.”Ian says he gets good cellphone coverage on his property al-

though his neighbour is not so lucky with “coverage stopping half way up the valley”.Sonia Emerson, who runs her

chartered accountancy from her home on Whit-by Rd in Wakefield, says she has issues with both poor cellphone reception and slow internet. “I find my mobile phone recep-

tion very patchy even within my house,” she says. “Sometimes I can get three to four bars while other times I am struggling to get a signal and that can sometimes be the same spot. “My internet access, I feel, is quite slow and more and more is drop-ping out for no reason. Some-times one laptop will drop out and the other stay working for no

reason - I presume it is a load is-sue but I’m not sure.” Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne is urging residents to complete the survey so that council can prepare a strong bid for the government funding. Al-though Richard says digital net-works are not part of council’s infrastructure, they are becoming “essential” for businesses.Richard says the key service pro-viders have already identified ar-eas around the district that have slow internet service and poor cellphone coverage. However, he says council needs personal ac-counts of the issues faced by resi-dents and businesses to support their application for funding. The deadline for completing the survey is June 19 but Richard says that is short notice and he has asked for an extension. The sur-vey is available at tasman.govt.nz or from council offices.

The Wakefield district has some of the slowest internet and poorest cellphone coverage in the region. Waimea Weekly went out to Wakefield and asked people

how they found their digital services.

Claudia Forts Fortaleza, Wakefield.

“I own Wakefield Pre-School so one problem we have is contacting parents in rural ar-eas on their cellphone if their children get sick. We have to work around that.”

Dean Ashton, Wai-iti.

“Telecom is okay but the cov-erage for the others is hope-less. We have broadband but it’s pretty slow.”

Marie Berry, Wakefield.

“We can only get Telecom where we live so we had to change all our phones when we moved here. If you want re-ception on Vodafone or 2 De-grees you have to go out and stand by the letter box.”

Steve Peterson, Wakefield.

“Telecom is good around here but Vodafone is sporadic. The coverage in rural areas isn’t good so, if I know that, I just don’t call someone on their cell.”

A bird is the most likely cause of the contamination in Rich-mond’s new water treatment plant that resulted in the wa-ter being chlorinated and the Tasman District Council is-suing a warning to Richmond residents to boil their water. The plant’s emergency chlo-rination system was activated last Thursday after low levels of the bacteria E coli were dis-covered in the water. Council

also issued a boil water notice to Richmond households as a precautionary measure af-ter consultation with Nelson Marlborough District Health Board Public Health Service. The notice was lifted on Sun-day but council communica-tions manager Chris Choat says the water will continue to be chlorinated until the source of the contamination is identified and the problem

is resolved. He says engineers are presently emptying a wa-ter tank to find the source of the contamination. The new water treatment plant on Lower Queen St is still in a commissioning phase but has been providing water to Richmond in a trial operation period for the last two months. The trial period is expected to finish in Au-gust.

A 20 metre snowy toboggan luge drew hundreds of children to Richmond’s Town Hall on Sunday as part of the Tasman District Council Winterrup-tion Family Snow Day.Sealord provided ice for the base of the luge with Rainbow Ski Field providing a truck load of snow to form a slippery surface on top, perfect for sliding.Temperatures were a few degrees warmer than expected but luckily most of the snow stayed put.Organiser Paul McConachie says the council had received a lot of help building the luge and putting together the event. “A truck trucked [the snow] in this morning. We had some able helpers to position it all on site and groom it. Once a few people started riding down it flattened out.”He says he enjoys seeing the children’s “faces of delight” as they slid down the snow on inflatable inner tubes.

Supporters of Tahunanui’s Modellers Pond had a significant win last week with the coun-cil agreeing to put money aside to concrete the bottom. The Nelson City Council have agreed to provide funding of up to $600,000, the rest will need to be paid for by the Nelson Society of Modellers. The council will also provide $15,000 a year to-wards maintenance costs.Modellers secretary Tracey Gibbs says the first step is for the council to draw up plans and get prices to seal the bottom of the pond with con-crete. “We can then take these plans and go out and get sponsorship from businesses and com-munity groups.”Tracy says she was “over the moon” with the support the society has had from the commu-nity. The petition presented to the council on Thursday received 1773 signatures.Seven Tahunanui School pupils, along with Tahunanui Business Association spokesperson John Gilbertson, presented the petition to May-or Rachel Reese during the council meeting.Lucy Summerfield, a pupil at Tahunanui School, spoke to the council about how the current state of the pond affects her and her brother en-joying his model boat. “He can’t actually drive it around because all the wood gets twisted in the propeller. Me and Tristan have to wade out in this yucky, mucky, murky water and it’s dis-gusting. If we fix it up, then that would help a lot of people.”

Hope School students received some military-style training last week after some special people flew in for a visit.Members of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, who have been camping up the Wairoa River Gorge as part of an Initial Officer Training Course, shared some of their military exercises and training with year 5 and 6 students. Part of their programme required the group to put together and participate in a community project. The group chose to visit two schools in the area to show them what they have learned and experienced dur-ing their time within the Air Force. They organised various activities for the

children, including practical skills such as drills, how to put up tents, use of ra-dios for communication and how to use camouflage vision. They also put the children through their paces on a mili-tary-style obstacle course and provided tours of two Unimogs.Teacher Di Scott says having the Royal New Zealand Air Force come to their small school has been an amazing expe-rience for everyone.“It has been great to see the students de-velop teamwork skills and pitching in together and having a go at new things. It has also been really good for the stu-dents to hear messages about working

together from people other than their teachers. The Air Force have been work-ing with the children and interacting and helping them through the activities, we’ve loved it,” says Di. The kids enjoyed the community initia-tive so much, it looks as though the Air Force may have drawn in some potential new recruits. “It’s really cool to have them visit as we are a small school and don’t normally get things like this,” says student, Lilly Zwart. “I especially liked learning the salutes - I think I want to be in the Air Force when I’m older because it’s just not for boys, it’s for girls as well,”

A report obtained by the Waimea Weekly shows that the slip that closed the his-toric Dun Mountain Walkway earlier this year was caused by construction of a track for the Brook Waimarama Sanctu-ary’s predator fence and that options for repairing the damage could cost more than $110,000.The report by Nelson Consulting En-gineers also shows that the Sanctuary Trust, Nelson City Council and con-tractors, ignored geotechnical advice by cutting the track too close to the Dun Mountain Walkway, increasing the risk

of a slip. The report says the alignment of the track that was specified in plans was changed and moved to “inside the pre-ferred 50m minimum separation to the walkway”.However, the Brook Waimarama Sanc-tuary Trust and Nelson City Council would not comment on the report which was sent to them on April 28.The trust’s general manager Hudson Dodd says he can’t comment on the re-port until they have completed the insur-ance process for the damage to the track and walkway. The council’s only response was “we are still working through the issues with the

Brook Waimarama Sanctuary Trust, to effect a permanent fix”.The report also provides six options for repairing the damage caused by the 35m long slip, that wiped out a 20m section of the historic, 150-year-old Dun Moun-tain Walkway and carried debris down-hill onto the fence track. The walkway was closed following the slip and was only reopened after a temporary repair was completed on April 24. The options include stabilising the walk-way and slip using retaining walls and posts, and replanting the slip, with the most expensive option costing “$110,000 or more”.

Report: Brook fence caused slip

TREE STUMPS REMOVED: Eight of the 15 tree stumps at Tahunanui Back Beach have been removed after a child came close to falling through one of them.Nelson City Council say they had an independ-ent arborist look at the stumps and eight were removed as they were found to be rotting. The council says the stumps were considered to be a health and safety issue. “If someone’s child was playing on/under these and got hurt, then we would have been negligent not to have done something,” said the council.

FINE FOR PLANT: Nelson Pine Industries Limited has been fined over $50,000 after one of its workers was injured trying to clear a jammed log in a conveyor belt with his hands. The man was struck by a metal log kicker last year and spent six days in hospital with lacera-tions to his left arm. He suffered from tendon, muscle and nerve damage. The company was sentenced at the Nelson District Court for fail-ing to ensure the safety of an employee while at work. Nelson Pine Industries was ordered to pay $45,000 in fines and $10,000 in reparations to the worker.

FALLING SNOW GOOD NEWS FOR LO-CAL SKIERS: A new snow pump and snow gun along with a good few weeks of snowfall are all signs for a good start to the season at Rainbow Ski Field.Rainbow marketing and events coordinator Georgie Tudor-Jones says the rate snow is fall-ing at the moment is unusual for early June.“It’s quite rare to have this much snow at this time of year. It’s a lot more white than usual.”She says staff at the ski field have been prepping for opening day on July 4 with the mechanics working on the snow grooming machines.

Nelson sailor Daryl Wislang’s Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing Team has won the Volvo Ocean Race with a leg to go, and the former Waimea College and Hope School student says he’s already setting his eyes on the next one.Daryl is the boat captain of Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing which crossed the fin-ished line into Lorient in France in third place, but secured it enough points to ensure they could not be overtaken in the race for the round the world title. He says it was a strange feeling on the boat when it crossed the finish line knowing they’d done enough to win. “It was really close heading to the fin-ish line, a team was just 0.6 of a mile be-hind us and if they had overtaken us we wouldn’t have been in the wining posi-tion, so it was pretty tense right up until the finish.”Daryl has been involved in the Volvo Ocean Race for a decade and he says to win it is a huge achievement. “It doesn’t matter how little sleep you’ve had, you’ve got plenty of energy to have a good celebration when you cross the line. It’s been ten years of my life to try and do it and it’s a great feeling. “There’s the America’s Cup, the Olym-pics and the Volvo Ocean Race, and to

do well in any of those races is amazing.”The nine month 38,739-nautical mile race started in Spain in October, before heading to South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, China, New Zealand, Brazil, the United States, Portugal, France and it will finish in Sweden.Daryl says he’d love to take the next step and skipper his own boat. “It would be quite nice to get something going out of New Zealand. Skippering a boat is a goal I’ve had for a long, long time but whether or not that happens, who knows?”He has tried in the past to pull together

enough sponsorship money to put a New Zealand-based team together and is hopeful it can be done for the next race.In the meantime, Daryl will head to the United States a week after the end of the ocean race to sail in a trans-Atlantic race before taking a break. After that it could be planning for the next round the world race, or perhaps a tilt at the America’s Cup. “With all these people leaving Team New Zealand there might be an oppor-tunity to go and do the cup with them, you never know.”

The Boulder Bank’s iconic lighthouse is to have its weath-er vane reattached this week, after it was blown off and damaged in March’s 65-knot winds. The weather vane has been re-furbished by Port Nelson staff, and Goleman Industrial Rig-ging have the difficult task of scaling the balcony and attach-ing the heavy weather vane to the top of the lighthouse. Bruce Robertson, one of the lighthouse caretakers who runs The Ferry to Haulashore Island, says the weather vane was due to be refurbished but the wind had got to it before plans were put in place to take it down properly. “I went out a couple of days after the storms and the wind had blown it off. The drama was that we couldn’t find it again." A member of the public later found the weather vane as he was walking along the boulder bank.

"When it blew off, it was bro-ken and battered and bent. We took it back to the port and one of the machinists in there has rebuilt the whole thing,” Bruce says. The weather vane also smashed a small gas unit that fits on the top of the lighthouse. The unit is designed to con-trol the asthetaline that once fuelled the lamp inside by con-tracting and expanding in the sun's warmth. “Apparently, when the sun came up it would heat up the

unit and shut the gas off to shut off the lamp." Bruce says he wasn’t sure how they would go about fixing it, but to his astonishment the workers at Port Nelson came across a brand new gas unit in its original packaging at a Port Nelson store room. "It was a spare. It’s bloody bril-liant, when they made things in those days they made them to last.” Check out www.nelsonive.co.nz later this week for a video of the weather vane being reattached.

Parents are over the moon about Henley School's new policy of making the annual school disco a fizzy drink-free event.Three hundred and eighty-three pupils dressed up for the lunar-themed disco held in the school hall on Friday night. The pupils collected their disco packs as they arrived only to find that something was missing after the parents who organised the disco decided to re-place the traditional fizzy drinks with bottled water.Parent and organising committee member Tash Mehrtens says they decided on the change after all the bad publicity surrounding sugary drinks. She says young children didn't need fizzy drinks to have fun at parties and dances and the

parents agreed that water was a healthier option.“Fun events don’t always need to involve sugar," Tash says. "It has also cut down on our organisa-tional time as some kids can’t have sugar and we had to do separate packs for them."Parent Sally Robinson says she limits the amount of sugary food and drinks her children have at home and is pleased the school disco organisers decided to make the big night out fizzy drink-free."There is so much sugar in their di-ets at the moment so I thinks it's a very good decision," she says.Surprisingly, many of the chil-dren agree with Tash saying that the children often got so hot and thirsty from all the dancing they actually asked for water instead of fizzy drinks.

Drawer excited to join Art Group exhibitionAndrew Board

One of the more impressive artists at this weekend’s Nelson Art Group winter exhibition is also one of the group’s newest.Robbie Burns’ hobby for years has been wood-working, but when the months got colder he decided he needed a new pastime to keep his nights busy.“My wife is a keen embroiderer, so she’d be sitting there doing that at night time and I’d be watching the TV, so I thought ‘bugger this’ I need something else to do, so I went and bought some pencils and paper and went from there,” he says. That was last December and Robbie, of Stoke, has already finished several incredible portrait drawings, including his two kids, wife and even his cat. “Those won’t be for sale, though,” jokes Robbie. “I need to keep those ones.”He says he enjoyed art at school but hadn’t done anything about it until a few months ago. He got inspired after watching some instructional videos on YouTube and he joined Nelson Art Group a couple of months ago for further advice.”This weekend will be the first exhibition that Robbie has been involved in. But it won’t just

be his artwork on display, he also makes his own frames, thanks to his other hobby.“That is handy, I just get the boards done for me and I do the rest. I really enjoy the whole process and I’m keen for feedback. Seeing my drawings there this weekend will be exciting.”

The Art Group Nelson winter exhibition is at the Stoke Memorial Hall this Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm. All artwork is for sale and more information can be found at www.artgroupnelson.co.nz

New flag road show hits Nelson:All those opposing it would not have boycotted it. Kirsten Taylor.

Not a great turn out, hardly a representative sample.

Adrian Ferris.

I don't want a flag that is like Aussie. We know how the elec-

tion turned out. Plenty of left wing Key haters who dominate Facebook, but Na-tional won by heaps. Flag vote will be a close run thing if ambivalent left forget to vote again. S Hell Krow.

With reference to the RSA guy, NZ has always been part of

"combined forces"... and, the soldiers at Gallipoli are buried under a silver fern. Dez Tinee.

The ones who oppose it aren't going to go to a meeting to dis-

cuss the new flag. If we separate from the monarchy then look at a new flag, until then our flag is our heritage. Nathan Towns.

The majority of the nation don't want the flag changed or the

waste of money. Mike Roberts.

Disagree with the RSA stand. When I was on active service in

Timor I served under the light blue UN Flag not that of NZ. We wore a Kiwi on

our shoulder not the NZ Flag. Myself, I look forward to having a flag which rep-resents NZ and is something uniquely ours, something inspiring and repre-sentative of who we are. Dave Trigg.

Caught speeding to pick up Thai:Might have gone cold by time got his take away.

Rayella Buzz Milne.

Paramedic on crusade to stop thieves:Feel for the lady with a drug abusive flatmate, and good on

you for caring for your neighbourhood. Donna Jan

Well done on going that extra ef-fort, shame it was up to you to

do it though! Sally Cox.

Good on you Frank! Legend. Paul Byrne.

Hopgood's wins national award:Fantastic news.Brenda Kenny.

It's amazing!Tracy Thorpe.

That is great. It is well loved and rightly so. Gerda Smith.

Housing accord signed:Doesn't change the underlying problem. Requires the Govern-

ment and Councils to sign off on an-other set of rules to temporarily make things easier. There is no talk of perma-nently changing the rules or abolishing them altogether, which is why there is a problem in the first place. Christian Galbraith.

Modellers Pond:I watch with interest the "for and against" the modellers pond. I

think our council doesn't do a bad job, but I think on this occasion they are dragging the chain a little. A few years ago I visited Timaru and the play area they had put together for the kids was such a success. Now we have thousands of families come to holiday in Nelson, why cannot Nelson equal what Timaru has created? The city council has spent thousands to accommodate cyclists, don't you think our kids deserve as much? We have people on community service let's motivate these people to clean the area and get some concrete down. If the council is short of ideas contact Timaru council for picture/plans. Get stuck in now, council, our winter is only short so we can have some happy kids. George Barker.

Rocks Rd footpath strengthened:Hope they make it wider, it is such a hazard for foot traffic.

Sheralee Taylor.

HOW DO I FIND OUT WHAT DAY MY BIN WILL BE EMPTIED?Each recycling bin is assigned to a specific street address. The collection day is written on the sticker – this is the day for both rubbish and recycling collections. So, for example, if it says “Tue” then your collection day for weekly rubbish bags is Tuesday. It also means that your fortnightly recycling collection will be on a Tuesday. The number after your day indicates whether your recycling will be collected on Week 1 or Week 2.

People using two of the electric barbecues at Rabbit Island won’t be running for cover when it rains anymore after the Rotary Club of Richmond built new shelters for the popular picnic sites. The Richmond Rotarians put the project on their to-do-list after talk-ing to Parks and Reserves staff at the Tasman District Council. A team of eight volunteers, with support from Taylor Timbers, Placemakers, Russ Sawmilling, the New Zealand Electricity Depart-ment and Freeman Roofing who supplied materials, completed the shelters on June 6. “Our big focus for the year is always

the Brightwater Wine and Food Festival but we also do projects like this as they come up,” Rotary’s Al-lan Hunter says. “The facilities they have out here are already quite im-pressive so we were happy to im-prove them. “A few of our volunteers were re-tired tradesmen so we had plenty of guys on the job who knew what they were doing. We spent a cou-ple of weekends out there and had good support from the local busi-nesses and council who paid for the concrete, so the whole project was completed debt-free.”The new shelters cover barbecues in Manuka Park and the Old Domain.

Young visitors to the Richmond Mall on Sunday had the oppor-tunity to create their very own ”Art Bot” as part of an activity set up by the Ministry of Inspi-ration.Art Bots are motor-powered creatures designed to hold felt-tip pens and create squiggly lines when placed on paper.Ministry of Inspiration presi-dent, Leanne Pressman, says the Art Bot idea was created to teach kids a little bit about elec-tronics and motors safely while having a fun and creative time decorating them.Kids have designed Art Bots in all sorts of shapes from gnomes to spiders to battlebots.

The team at Age Concern Nelson Tasman are dedicated to improving the life and well-being of older people within the region. The not-for-profit organisation has branches around the country and focuses its attention on providing advice, support, information and advocacy on a range of issues and encourag-ing positive ageing for people of all ages. To achieve this, Age Concern Nelson Tasman is involved with preventing the abuse and ne-glect of our elderly community through edu-cational presentations to various local groups; it also operates an accredited visiting service for lonely or isolated people and educates the elderly community on a number of topics so that they can have a vested interest in their fu-ture. Recently the Nelson Tasman office on Oxford St has undergone renovations, extending the building to accommodate a growing demand for their services. While their expansion has seen better facilities for clients to experience safety and confidentiality, it also highlights a rise in elder abuse and neglect within the com-munity that is unacceptable. The team itself is also expanding to meet the needs of their clients. Jess Breeze holds the role of Elder Abuse Neglect Prevention Advi-sor, which sees her time split between liaising face to face with clients and their families, and giving presentations to educate groups around the region on the prevention of elder abuse. It also includes dealing with neglect or abuse cases as and when they arise, including self-neglect, which can be very serious and time

consuming. Wendy Duffy is focused on funding and event planning; because they are a charitable organi-sation, finding funds is vital to their survival, however, one of the key things that Age Con-cern value is building good relationships with stakeholders and fellow agencies, which helps their financial situation and ability to help those in need. Sue Tilby has managed the Nelson Tasman branch for the last four years and has overseen its growth from a one-man-band to today’s small team of committed professionals, each playing a vital part in the successful operation of a hugely important organisation. This week, the team will be recognising El-der Abuse Awareness Week with a handful of events, including a meet and greet at the Or-chard St community housing on Thursday be-tween 10am and 12pm. Sue says the day will have a relaxed atmosphere; allowing people to meet the team in person, take away informa-tion about their services and hopefully make contact again if they want to follow up with any concerns about their or another’s situa-tion. So what is elder abuse? Elder abuse and neglect is a single or repeated act, or lack of appropri-ate action, occurring in any relationship where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person. The six commonly identified categories of elder abuse are: psychological, financial, physical, institu-tional, neglect, or sexual. In Nelson Tasman, Age Concern see around 100 people each year dealing with abuse. The majority of these cases are financial and of that, approximately three-quarters are by family members.Age Concern Nelson Tasman not only strive to prevent the abuse and neglect of the elderly

Page 17: 17 June 2015

through educating people of its existence, their services also include a visiting service that makes a huge difference to those who receive it. Volunteers are always needed to keep their visitation p r o g r a m m e operating and, although they have around 80 volunteers already, there are still 15 elderly people on the waiting list. Throughout the year, Age Concern Nelson Tasman also put on a number of workshops, educating the elderly on topics such as healthy eating, staying safe driving, and are often present at the Positive Ageing Expo. Elder abuse and ne-glect isn’t selective in its victims, which is why Sue and Jess regularly make vis-its to rural areas; they regularly visit Golden Bay, as recently as last week to highlight World Elder Abuse and

Awareness day. Reaching out to as many peo-ple as they can is important, especially as more-isolated communities are more at risk. Promoting inter-generational relationships is

also a high priority for the group who see a lot of respect is-sues and ageism. As well as encouraging older people to write down their own life stories, Age Concern Nelson Tasman is, at present, involved in an initiative where 90 students from the lo-cal school are writing the life stories of an older person in their lives. Elder abuse and ne-glect is a serious is-sue that is growing in our community. If you suspect it’s hap-pening to someone you know, or you are simply worried about them, let the team at Age Concern know by visiting their office between 9am to 4pm

Monday to Friday, or by calling them on 544 7624.

From the President’s desk...

I would like to thank all those members that took time to at-tend the 2015 AGM.It’s your club and that’s the time to understand what the board and executive do to make Club Waimea special and to have your say positively. Not all agree at times on the de-cisions made but please be assured that they are done for the best inter-ests of your club.We have an up-grade, which is forced upon us, in the casino room which will take place over the next few months. This is to comply with the gaming laws and will make our casino more people friendly.I would like to thank our Board Director, Dave Birdling, for his support for myself during the changeover of the restaurant contractor, his negotiation and contract skills were very much

appreciated and at times were tested however, again I believe we have now a complete restau-rant contractor which will serve our members requirements. Please support Phillip Hazeld-ine.To the executive and board again it was team work and that showed especially during the Clubs NZ Conference to which we are still receiving compli-

ments. To our manager John Hewison, your exper-tise in club matters has been so valu-able and to our staff, thank you for your support towards the well being of our club.To all our volunteers, a big thank you for all you have done, you

are special people within Club Waimea.I am looking forward to lead-ing your club into another year which will be a testing year fi-nancially however, I believe we have the expertise to survive and be a proud club.I am proud to be your President, thank you all for your support.

Don’t miss out on the chance to see barbershop at its best. Men in Accord are excited to be hosting the Canterbury Plains Men for a weekend of four part harmonies, a-capella. The Canterbury Plains Men are Christchurch’s barber-shop group and twenty of them will be venturing north, spend-ing Friday, July 24 and Saturday, July 25 in Nelson; the highlight of their trip being a joint concert on the Saturday. Men in Accord are hoping to take advantage of the great acoustics of Nelson Cathedral but the venue is yet to be confirmed. For a gold coin

donation, the public can also en-joy the magic of barbershop, so keep an eye on the Club Waimea newsletter for more details.Men in Accord are always on the lookout for new members and everyone is welcome. Even if you can’t hold a tune, don’t despair, the group are always happy to teach those that want to learn. Rehearsals are held every Tues-day from 7:15pm and are a great way to experience barbershop music, as well as the camaraderie of a good bunch of blokes. Men in Accord have recently had a group of new members join af-

ter they were blown away by the talent when they came along to listen; younger enthusiasts are also welcomed. When it comes to singing for an audience, Men in Accord are regular visitors to local retirement homes and on occasion, perform alongside the ladies barbershop group, Harmony Chorus. For the last year or so, the group has been rebuilding after losing several members but it is now sound-ing better than ever. To enquire about joining Men in Accord, contact Brian Wood on 547 7191.

The Club Waimea Fishing Section enjoys fishing and social action both around Nelson and further afield. Our members are all keen fisher-men and fisherwomen. In the past five years we have been successfully out fishing in Cook Strait from Pic-ton, D’Urville Island from Nelson and also Okiwi Bay, Pelorus Sound from Havelock and the Kaikoura Coast from both the Clarence and Kaikoura itself and also Pegasus Bay from Motenau. We are always looking for new places to fish and are considering going out to Kaha-

Coming up in Club Waimea’s entertainment is the Travelling Hillbillies who will be helping the club celebrate American In-dependence Day on July 4. Dress

up in your red and white colours, sign their national anthem, enjoy some hotdogs and chips and listen to the best of true American hill-billy music.

If you love music and movement, Sioux Line Dancing is for you. No longer is line dancing strictly coun-try, the group dances to a range of different tunes including several modern songs and whether you want a fast-paced, energetic hobby, or a gentle, leisurely experience, line dancing can cater to both. The Sioux Line Dance group meet at Club Waimea every Wednesday night at 6:30pm. Their evening starts off with an improver class for those who were beginners last

year, and is followed by an inter-mediate level class. Although there are no beginners within the group, group instructor, Sue Wilson will be glad to take a few minutes to teach those interested some basics. Club Waimea’s Sioux Line Dance group is all about having fun and outside of their weekly meets, the group take part in public demon-strations, as well as social trips to other line dance clubs around the country, from the West Coast to Blenheim and Christchurch.

Club Waimea prides itself on providing a warm and friend-ly atmosphere where mem-bers can feel at home, and some have taken that quite literally. Club Waimea has a small community living on its back door step and no one knows Club Waimea hospitality bet-ter that resident Dave Porte-ous. Originally from Dunedin, Dave shifted to Spring Creek in Picton and then to Nelson where he planned to build a few houses. However, Dave couldn’t resist what the region had to offer and decided to stay put, set-tling into a job with Taylors Timber and deciding, on the spur of the moment, to pur-chase a caravan and stick it in the Club Waimea cara-van park; a place he has now called home for 32 years.

Having owned houses previ-ously, Dave enjoys the con-

venience of living right in the town centre, the economical

benefits of caravan life and freedom from the ties a house can bring. Living next to the race track is also a bonus as Dave is still very involved with it; continuing to own a couple of horses, and having owned and trained them ear-lier in his life. The other great thing about living in the camp, says Dave, is the people. Once in a while the camp will get together for a party, either in the club or, if it’s summer, around a bar-beque outside. During Dave’s years as a resi-dent of Club Waimea, the fa-cility has only gone through one major change is his eyes and that’s its size. Back in the day the club rooms were much smaller and more “homely,” than the modern building we see today, al-

though he agrees it still has a great atmosphere.

Dave Porteous is one of Club Waimea caravan park’s longest standing residents, having been there 32 years.

Club Waimea has a new ad-dition to its team. Phil Ha-zeldine has taken on the position of chef and from July 2, will be running Rich-mond’s only dedicated buf-fet restaurant. A la carte meals will also remain avail-able. Phil has been a chef all his life and is looking forward to running Phil’s Place, which will be open Thursday to Sunday from 5pm. He will also be offering breakfast lunch and dinner catering for Club Waimea functions. For a proper in-troduction to Phil, keep an eye out for the upcom-ing Club Waimea feature in Waimea Weekly.

Caravan ParkMembers DrawMember No`s 1200, 1482, 86, 1562, 684, 373, 116 and 1628 were not here and next week there will be two draws for $1,500.

Club Waimea’s AGM was held on Sunday June 14 and the results saw Jan Phipps re-elected as President,

and Wayne Bowen as Vice-Presi-dent. Both were unopposed when it came time to vote.

When you’ve got several tons of truck in your workshop it pays to have plenty of room and that’s just what Active Engineering Services Ltd didn’t have before they moved. Now that they’ve settled into their new premises on Beach Rd, things are fitting a little bit better and the team are looking forward to taking on some bigger projects. Active Engineering Services Ltd are a transport engineering company that repair, design and fabricate ve-hicles, from a domestic horse float

or car trailer, right up to a commer-cial log truck and trailer, and every-thing in between.Owner Graham Adams has owned and operated the business for nine years now, eight of those from his workshop on Gladstone Rd; but be-ing in a small space and out of view from the road, he decided it was time to branch out. Although Graham does have experi-ence with structural engineering, it’s his 30 plus years of working in the transport engineering industry that

is valuable to Active Engineering’s customers. Alongside Graham is a team of skilled and experienced engineers who pride themselves on quality workmanship and innovative so-lutions to their client’s requirements. During Paul Renwick’s 40 years as an engineer he’s spent 14 years in Australia working on high rise buildings, 14 years working on logging

trucks for Waimea Contract Carriers and has worked in the mining industry too. Tom Ty-son is also proud to have experience in most aspects of general engineering including for-estry machinery; although his specialty is as a machinist and fitter. Count up their experi-ence and you have a significant amount for a small team.

The other casual visitor to their workshop is David Plum; Ac-tive Engineering’s approved Land Transport Certifying Engineer. David is an independent consult-ant who is called in as and when he’s needed to document their re-pairs or construction for the final sign off, which means their work meets New Zealand road regula-tions. The term ‘engineering’ covers a lot of ground, but road transport

is significantly different to struc-tural. While a road transport engineer can do structural engi-neering, it isn’t so easy to do it the other way round, and the team ac-knowledges that good road trans-port engineers are few and far be-tween; luckily for locals and even businesses round the country, Active Engineering Services are one of them. Road transport en-gineering looks at fatigue, crack-ing and other elements failing in

the truck or trailer because everything is flexing when the vehicle is moving, especially if it’s car-rying a load. When a trailer built by the team is going down the road at 90kph, it’s a bit like a constant force ten hurricane and an eight on the

Richter scale, and to create a vehicle or trailer that will handle such forces, the team requires a lot of skill. Active Engineering contracts to Waimea Truck and Crane, who are agents for Versalift access

The Active Engineering Services team are loving their new work-shop on Beach Road, Richmond. They have space to spare, allow-ing them to tackle much bigger jobs, and the cranes and logging trucks they regularly work on fit perfectly under the high roof.

Giving - isn’t it something we feel we should do but often don’t do? Last month, Hope Community Church held a Big Share Fair as part of their biennial Hopefest week. Members of the church and also the local com-munity donated items they no longer required as well as fresh produce, so other people were able to get items for free. What do we know about giving? Independent surveys by professionals at Harvard Business School and the University of California provide evi-dence that the happiness of those who give is greater than the receiver. Also, a 1999 study suggests that 44 per cent of those that volunteer, live a long-er life.Further studies show that it provides a social connection and feeling of com-munity. It also evokes gratitude, meaning that when you give you realise that you have in fact received more than others or sometimes more than you have really needed. And giving is contagious. Many times when peo-ple receive they are so blessed by the act they look to give to others. How can giving look in our community? Espe-cially when we feel we are struggling to make

ends meet ourselves, it doesn’t seem feasible. So what can we offer others? Rather than throwing items in the rubbish bin maybe a neighbour or a young family could use these items. Food’s a universal language, as we all have to eat.

So next time you’re making a casserole or such like, how about doubling the recipe and freezing the extra to give away some time to a neighbour who may have lost a family member, or be suffering some ill health. Often at these times the thought of cooking can be so over-whelmimg so to receive a meal would be such a blessing. Another way to bless someone ran-domly is to pay forward a coffee. Ei-ther pay for the next persons in queue for a coffee or leave some money with the barista to choose someone later in

the day.In my role with Christians Against Poverty, our free debt management service often invokes a desire for our clients to give back or help others which re-enforces the research that giving here and there will make the world is good.Did you know, no snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible. Let us all be snowflakes in our community by starting to give a little to those around us.

Just a thought...

Christians Against Poverty centre manager

Dave Harris.

machinery. The work they do for Waimea Truck and Crane goes all over the country, while their local business includes well known com-panies such as Borlase Transport, Higgins Contractors and Allan Hahn Contracting. When it comes to fabricating a truck to the specifications of a cli-ent business, Graham and the team start with the cab and chassis and build up from there; designing the layout of the truck to accommodate the Versalift, crane or trailer. Each customer also requires certain ex-tras, such as cab cages, hand rails and tool boxes to suit the vehicles purpose; but no matter what the job may be, whether a small repair to a domestic trailer, to the com-plete build of a log truck, Graham and the team are more than capa-ble of offering safe, quality work.

What makes road transport engi-neering more complicated is that often the clients brief may not nec-essarily comply with New Zealand road regulations. It’s Graham’s job to take his customers ideas and make them fit within the space and weight that will comply with our roads. Apart from a beer at the end of the day, the team enjoys the chal-lenge and seeing the end product work well in its field, which in turn makes a happy customer; some-thing Graham and his team are very familiar with, and which has led to a lot of repeat work. Whether you’re a business that re-quires full truck fabrication, or you simply need a domestic car trailer repaired, give the boys a call today and get the best service from Ac-tive Engineering.

Fantastic Quality - Affordable Prices

The top of the table clash in Nelson Netball’s Collegiate 1 grade between Waimea Col-lege 9A and Waimea College 10C was a one-sided affair with 9A beating an under-strength 10C team 40-18 at the Saxton Courts on Saturday. Waimea 9A coach, Karryn Stack says her charges have been steadily improving, and although Saturday’s game was definitely a good performance they are yet to play a consist-ent four quarters. The third quarter was shared five-all as the younger girls were, maybe a little complacent as they lead 22–6 at the major break, forgot to work to the game plan and “went off track”. However, the 9A’s target is to have everything coming togeth-er for the South Island Junior Tournament which is to be held in Christchurch at the begin-ning of July.Goal shoot Kate Dohmen was the star for 9A, scoring all but two of her team’s goals. Kate presented well to her feeders

who delivered quality ball, and while the majority of Kate’s conversions were close to the post, she had to work for the optimum position - her 83 per cent average was commendable given the windy conditions. But Kate did not have it all her own way as Kim Brockman, who gave away several centime-tres in height, toiled to slow the ball down. Annaleise Ramsay’s

court time is being managed after coming back from injury and she is moving nicely to find circle edge when on the wing - she also impressed with her movement in the circle, partic-ularly her drives along the base line, when she donned the goal attack bib.Wing defence Jamie Young had her best game of the sea-son working tirelessly through court. She gained numerous intercepts and deflections and applied a huge amount of pres-sure around the circle.Anna Gaging came in for praise from her coach as she “stepped up”, while sister Kate enjoyed the extra territory she covered out at goal defence. Kate’s job was to hassle and put the shoot-ers under pressure and she car-ried out the instructions to the letter.Stand-in coach for 10C, Enya Sharp said she was happy how the girls “came back” and played as a team in the second half when the score was 12–18. Goal shoot Rose Miller had a tidy game shooting 77 per cent while mid-courter Bianca Rog-ers worked hard as the link through court.

The wizards have finally found the right formula. After failing to beat Waimea Old Boys in two championship games in as many years, Taylor’s Con-tracting Wanderers, nicknamed the Wizards, finally beat their arch-rivals 15-11 in Saturday’s Tasman Trophy final. It is the club's first major senior club rugby title in at least six dec-ades.Star & Garter Waimea may have been unbeaten all year and they may have been playing at home, but it was Wanderers that looked the more likely all game. Playing with a strong wind at their backs in the first half, Waimea could only rack up an eight point lead at the break. Many side-line spectators felt that wasn’t enough.Wanderers captain Trael Joass says the plan was to pressure the hosts and “put them in a position they hadn’t been all year”.“We thought it was a 26 point wind so we were happy at half time,” says Trael.

Waimea threatened on a number of occasions in the second half but Wanderers dominated territory. A try in the right-hand corner to Jesse Pitman tied the game up at 8-8 after an earlier penalty goal to the visitors.Waimea took the lead again halfway through the second half, thanks to a quick-thinking dropped goal from Waimea’s half-back James Lash. But in the final ten minutes, Wan-derers continued to press and midfielder Sione Holani broke through the Waimea defence and scored a spectacular try next to the posts as his team-mates swarmed him. After the successful conversion Wanderers had a 15-11 lead, which they were able to defend until the full time whistle.Trael says the win was a huge re-lief for his side. “It’s been a long time coming and we’ve had pressure all week from the supporters. But it’s awesome for the boys and awesome for the club. We’re got a great thing going here.”

The game doubled as a round-robin game in the Car Company Nelson Bays division one club rugby championship, a competi-tion Wanderers and Waimea are dominating. If form continues, the two sides will meet once again in the club rugby final next month and many rugby fans will be thrilled to watch these two sides go at it again.Waimea assistant coach Mark Milne says they’ll learn from the loss. “They deserved their win - we don’t have any excuses. We made too many mistakes and missed a couple of opportunities while they made the most of theirs.“We made some of the mistakes because they created a lot of pres-sure but we have to learn to deal with that pressure.”Waimea plays Kahurangi at Jubi-lee Park Saturday and Mark says he expects the team to bounce back from their first loss this sea-son.“You always learn more from your loses than your wins so it’s up to us to learn from this one.”

Heartbreak for Waimea as Wanderers win first club rugby title in 60 years

Waimea Old Boys senior B prevailed 12-3 in an old-school, low-scoring match at Jubilee Park on Saturday, to remain at the top of the Car Com-pany Nelson division two championship. It was expected to be a close, hard-fought battle, with Waimea going into the game just two points clear of second-placed Wanderers, and the game lived up to those pre-match expectations. Although Waimea scored two tries, one in each half, it was their determined defence that secured the win. Waimea manager Marc Hunter says they were under pressure for long periods after go-ing ahead 12-3 early in the second half and they needed resolute defence to keep their line intact. Marc says the first half was also a “tight forward battle with both teams not giving anything away”.

Wanderers opened the scoring with a penalty be-fore Waimea winger Kent Yarrell made a break down the sideline to score and give his team a 5-3 lead at half time. Waimea went ahead 12-3 early in the second half when Richard Tonga made a 40m run through Wanderers backs to score un-der the posts.Marc says the stand-out players for Waimea were Tim Fensom, Matt Finn and Mason Thelin in the forwards and Ben Jeffery and Luke Thelin in the backs. Waimea Women:The Waimea Old Boys senior women won both their games beating Marist 52-12 and Moutere 65-0. Waimea Old Boys under-19 beat Marlbor-ough Boys Second XV 29-17.

Students from special education classes around Nelson and Tasman played the beau-tiful game at Saxton Stadium last Wednesday helped by some “great kids” from Waimea College.Teams from Nayland College, Maitai School, Waimea College Tapawera Area School and Motueka High School played in the annual Special Olympics Football tournament in-doors at Saxton Stadium. It was a big day out for the special educa-tion classes but it wouldn’t have been pos-sible without help from a group of year 10 Waimea College students. The school’s year 10 junior leaders have been helping out at Special Olympic events for a number of years and Special Olympics re-gional co-ordinator Graeme Bain says the 20 students did a great job again last week.

“They did the refereeing and line umpiring and kept the score - they even entered a team to even-up the draw as well,” Graeme says. “They are great kids and they always do a wonderful job and are really supportive.“We did a skills session in the morning and then we are having these games this after-noon. But it’s more about getting them all together and having fun.” Waimea College year 10 student Zac Rich-ardson-Hall says they enjoyed helping the special education soccer players who “are a big part of the school”. “I know a lot of these special education kids so it was good to be able to help them with this.”For the record, Waimea College Yellow won the division one competition while Tapaw-era won division two.

Britta Martin won B grade in 1hr 13min 55sec with John Reid winning C grade.

RUNNING: The Monaco Nelson Mid-Winter Mar-athon is being held this Sunday starting from the Honest Lawyer and heading out to Rabbit Island and back. Runners and walkers can compete as in-dividuals or teams of two. Walkers start at 8am and runners at 9am. Pre-registration will be available at the Shoe Clinic on Bridge St on Saturday from 9am to 4pm and on Sunday from 7am at the rear of the Honest Lawyer.

FOOTBALL: Richmond Athletic are now joint-leaders of the Nelson Bays Football first division after a 2-0 win over Suburbs Seals at Jubilee Park on Saturday. Richmond’s goals both came from the boot of star import Ben Harris.

Q: My partner’s hours have been reduced and I have lost my part-time work. Now we can’t keep up with the repayments of our loans. What should we do?

A: It is very important to keep up with the repayments that you have agreed to pay. If you cannot:

Talk with your loan company about extending the loan term or taking a loan holiday. Be aware that these options will cost you more in the long run.

Talk to your family. Someone may be able to take over the repayments until your situation improves.

Get budget advice. You may be able to get a consolidation loan (for

interest bearing debts). The repayments may be less than what you are currently paying. Check that it doesn’t cost more overall.

If all else fails, consider a Summary Installment Order. This is a way to pay off unsecured debt over time with no interest.

We offer free, confidential advice for everyone. Send any questions to [email protected]
