THE NATIVITY OF THE BLESED VIRGIN MARY
This Saturday, September 8th, we celebrate the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. When was the Mother of God reallyborn? We can't know for certain, of course, but for almost 15 centuries now, Catholics have celebrated the Virgin Mary'sbirthday on September 8. So, those of you quick with the calendar, you will quickly realize there is a nine month connec-tion with December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, the day on which the Virgin Mary herself was conceived inthe womb of her mother, St. Anne. Christians normally celebrate the day on which saints died, because that is when theyentered into eternal life. And indeed, we just recently celebrated the end of Mary's earthly life in the Feast of the Assump-tion of the Blessed Virgin Mary. But we also celebrate three birthdays, and Mary's is one of them. The other two are thebirths of Christ and Saint John the Baptist, and the common thread tying these feasts together is that all three -- Mary,Jesus, and Saint John -- were born without Original Sin (the topic for another article).
It's no surprise, then, that the Christians of the second century A.D. recorded the details of Mary's birth in such documentsas the Protoevangelium of James and the Gospel of the Nativity of Mary. While neither document bears the authority ofScripture, they provide us with everything that we know about the life of Mary historically before the Annunciation, includ-ing the names of Saint Mary's parents, Saints Joachim and Anne. It's a good example of Tradition, which complements(while never contradicting) Scripture.
