The Breitenbush Credo We of the Breitenbush Community dedicate ourselves to living mindfully

in the spirit of love, unity, honesty and service.

We see ourselves as guardians of Breitenbush Hot Springs,

safeguarding the Earth and healing waters, assuring their continued availability to

all beings who respect them. Our primary service is to provide a healing retreat and

conference center that promotes holistic health and spiritual growth and facilitates the

gathering of people in celebration of the experience of life.

Our community is supported by the services we provide.

We are committed to the health and well-being of ourselves and our families,

to live, work, play and grow together harmoniously. We mutually support and respect

each person’s dignity, and awaken to the Spirit within each of us that acknowledges we

are all One.

The community is committed to a lifestyle conducive to holistic

childrearing and personal growth.

Our precepts for self growth include personal accountability, honest communication,

awareness of our actions and the quality of their results, directing our energies to the

positive, expressing appreciation for what others do, correcting what is clearly not

working for the community or for us as individuals, assuming the responsibility for

creating and sharing abundance,

and choosing and re-choosing to be together.

We structure our lives such that we can experience daily the rewards of success,

peacefulness and joy. It is our hope that the thriving community we create will be an

inspiration to others in their exploration of lifestyle and community.

We also extend ourselves to the greater society in which we live, the world

community, and commit ourselves to being socially, spiritually, politically

and environmentally responsible.

. . . . . . . . . .

About the Credo: This credo was born of deliberations lasting weeks in which a small circle of Breitenbush founding members worked hard to articulate its collective vision for the international community it was dreaming into. The Credo has remained as written, unchanged, since voted and agreed upon by consensus in the late 1970s.

Cover: Spotted Owl by Gael Nagle. Gael lives and works here at Breitenbush Hot Springs and has been batiking for

over 40 years. Her pieces are fashioned in the traditional method of painting melted beeswax onto 100% cotton cloth with paint brushes and submerging the piece in successive cold-water dye baths, working from the lightest to the darkest dye and boiling the wax out after each primary color is finished. Subject matter is inspired by her love of the impressionists and an appreciation for the human experience within the natural world.

DanceQuest™: A Women’s Retreat*

“If I could say with words what my dances are telling, there would be no need to dance them.”

Enter the temple of your body. Drop into art-time and

soul-space. Embrace your authentic movement. Listen to the whispers of your heart.

DanceQuest offers 4 days of movement, stillness, music, silence, journaling, ritual and soul-crafting. We come together to remember our vision, reclaim our wisdom and rejoice in community. Using movement as fuel and breath as fire, we burn away what no longer serves. Engaging intuition and instinct, we

connect to a larger self, breaking open a life that has grown too small. If your body is tired of being ignored ... If your heart desires a nurturing circle of women... If your soul needs reflection and rejuvenation... If you want to get away, and back to yourself...the dance awaits you.

Paula Byrne, since 1996, has facilitated conscious movement: Wild Grace™, DanceQuest™, Soul Motion™, contact improv, authentic movement and trance dance. She teaches internationally and is Founder of SomaSpace in Portland, Oregon.REG & INFO: Paula 503.804.7660 or Living@

The Gift of Witness Consider your life and all the support that exists in order for you to be here simply to witness and receive this world. When this witnessing

is cultivated with honesty, respect, and wonder, our offering to the world is authentic, respected, and clean. Through the practices of asana and breath work, chant and mantra, meditation and journaling, we shall investigate this incredible relationship we are graced with by having a body and mind. Four well-rounded practices, amazing meals and hot springs under the stars offer a powerful setting for this transformative work.

Sweethome has studied Yoga since 1993. She received her B.A. in creative writing and loves to tell stories and listen to them. She approaches the practice of yoga and life with devotion and awe. Her style is unique and dynamic, poetically blending vinyasa with yoga philosophy, chanting, pranayama and meditation. Her desire is to inspire all to experience life with compassion, patience and reverence.REG: Breitenbush 503.854.3320 INFO:Sweethome

Practicing Presence: An Enneagram Retreat

The Enneagram of Personality is a transformational system that gives us tools for greater understanding of ourselves and others. This retreat is

designed to increase conscious awareness of the patterns and behaviors of our Personality (or ego). Living our life without presence simply reinforces the personality structure of our type and the habits that restrict and limit us. We will use experiences of the body, mind and heart to access the deeper truth of who we are meant to be. Being present and “catching ourselves in the act” are essential to discovering the essence of who we truly are. This retreat is enjoyed and valued by those who are new to the Enneagram as well as long-term practitioners.

Kathleen Paterno, founder of Enneagram Discovery, LLC, is a graduate of the Riso-Hudson Enneagram Institute in New York. She has been teaching, facilitating and guiding groups, individuals and couples in the Central Oregon area since 1997.REG: Breitenbush 503.854.3320 INFO: Kathleen

The Mushroom GatheringLearn about the Pacific Northwest wild mushrooms that fruit on the lands surrounding Breitenbush from an expert panel of speakers. In the mornings,

hunt the old-growth forests for all kinds of mushrooms, including choice edibles and their toxic look-alikes. In the afternoon workshops, create mushroom crafts and participate in a hands-on cooking class with an experienced cooking instructor. At night, our mycology experts present their specialized topics and answer your mushroom-related questions before we end the evenings with a soak in the hot tubs. All levels of mushroom enthusiasts are welcome. Afternoon workshops will have limited space and will require registration. Please visit www.mushroominc.org.

Loving, Living, & Dying:

Path of the HeartJoy, beauty, connection, and affection tumble together through our lives, deeply intertwined with change, loss, sorrow, and letting go. Together these experiences

form the tender, resilient heart of being human. Contemplative practices and skillful means for embracing each aspect can carry us through the gentle rains and pounding storms of our lives.

Using dharma reflection, dialogue, meditation, and contemplative tools, this retreat will explore and celebrate the spacious field of our own nature. As we approach the wild terrain of loving, living, and dying, we’ll touch the earth and the generous heart that sustains our lives and transforms everything we love.

If you are living with terminal illness, or hold old or recent grief for yourself or another, or simply want to look deeply in a supportive space, come share this exploration of human wholeness.

Betsy Toll offers dharma programs in Portland, and provides support to ill and dying individuals and their loved ones. She bows to Ram Dass, Roshi Joan Halifax, Frank Ostaseski, and Joanna Macy, whose wisdom and kindness illuminate the dharma trail.REG: Breitenbush 503.854.3320 INFO: betsy@

Oct 16 - 19 Oregon Holistic Nurses Association Conference

Sustaining the Power of Transformation

Holistic nursing is defined as “all nursing practice that has healing the whole person as its goal” (American Holistic

Nurses’ Association, 1998, Description of Holistic Nursing). Oregon Holistic Nurses Association (OHNA) understands that Holistic Nursing is about a way of being, not doing. Holistic Nurses may integrate complementary health practices into their practice to promote the well being and healing of individuals.

We recognize that as health professionals, we must first heal ourselves in order to facilitate the healing potential of others. The OHNA conference offers opportunities to integrate self-care, reflection and spiritual practices, as well as to expand our awareness and nursing practice. Most classes earn CE contact hours for registered nurses.

We are a professional group that honors and cherishes the diversity and unity that we share. The Breitenbush Retreat and Conference Center offers community and a healthy environment for our ninth annual event. Male Journeys: A Men’s Courage & Renewal® Retreat*

This active and reflective Circle of Trust® program is open to men

of all ages. The human journey is ultimately

a return to who we are. In large group, small group, and solitary settings, the journey of returning to ourselves is explored, using the personal stories of men, poetry, and stories from wisdom traditions.

We co-create a trustworthy circle in which we can listen to each other with courage and compassion. Within a safe space and as we rest, hike, contemplate and converse, our own voice can be heard: wisdom arises to guide us how to return to ourselves.

Jeff Creswell and Dan Hines are Courage & Renewal facilitators: mentored by activist and writer Parker J. Palmer. Jeff has been an elementary school teacher in Portland for decades, and is an educational consultant for the Storyline methodology, developed in Scotland. Dan comes from BC, Canada and brings his eclectic experience as a leadership consultant, zoo manager, Anglican priest, founder of an intentional community, and contractor to his work with professionals in diverse settings. www.danhines.ca REG: Breitenbush 503.854.3320 INFO: Dan at dan@

Oct 21 - 24 Gary Reiss, Luisah Teish, Marilyn Youngbird, Daryl Berlie, Miguel Angel, Dawn Beck and Gerard Gatz.

The Shamanic Convergence 2016 Enhancing Love, Sex, and Spirit

Join leading teachers from Process-oriented Psychology, African Shamanism, Native American Practices, Peruvian Shamanism, Tantra, and Aikido as they share the wisdom of their traditions. Through teaching, ritual, and experiential exercises we will create a community to create a deep life-transforming journey, to help us have more exciting, meaningful, satisfying, ecstatic lives full of love, sex, and spirit. So much of modern life takes us away from our bodies, and separates love and sex. Most religious traditions split sex and spirit. We enter into this weekend with the intention to heal these splits and to find the beauty and power of being in our own unified selves, interacting with our wholeness intact as we dance into the worlds of love, sex, and spirit.

We are particularly excited to welcome our teachers from last year: Gary Reiss, Luisah Teish, Marilyn Youngbird, Daryl Berlie, and Miguel Angel; and to add the wonderful Tantric teachers, Dawn Beck and Gerard Gatz.REG: Breitenbush 503.854.3320 INFO: Gary at

He teaches meditation groups, gives workshops and leads retreats internationally. Noah has created a process of addiction recovery based on the teachings of the Buddha called Refuge Recovery. Nourishing Relationships: A Brahma Viharas Yoga Retreat

As humans we need connection. We long for intimacy, yet so many of us are left feeling unsatisfied, isolated and alone. In this retreat, we will learn

to deepen our relationships through the teachings of the Brahma Viharas, the four qualities of the heart: loving-kindness, compassion, appreciative joy, and equanimity.

The Brahma Viharas are like road maps, which help us navigate relationships. Whether we’re relating to ourselves or to others (we’re always relating to something!), these heart teachings will help us to consciously and gracefully meet whatever we’re faced with.We will explore the Brahma Viharas through discussion, postures, breathing, meditation and being in community, and together, we will walk the steps necessary to open into intimacy.

Emily Light, E-RYT-500, has been practicing yoga since 2001, teaching since 2007, and in 2015 completed a two year Yoga Therapy Professional Training with Sarahjoy Marsh. True Change through Energy- QigongEnergy is the connectivity to everything, from body and mind to time and space.

When we experience connection, healing happens on all levels. Our life force flows into the isolated, numb, weak, dim and dark places in our physical and emotional bodies. Through energy level change, karma and fate can be changed. We re-connect with our true self and experience oneness in all. Once this crucial connection is made, spiritual development is exponential.

Through the five-days immersion practice of ZY Qigong and Bodhidharma’s Sinews Transformation Classic, raise your energy

level to the next plateau and feel change comprehensively.

Master teacher Claire Johnson is apprenticed by ZY Qigong lineage holder, and practiced solitary meditations without food or water in Chinese and Tibetan caves. Claire has been teaching and healing for sixteen years throughout North America, Europe and Asia.

Jerigtu, Mongolian shaman and healer, comes from a family of well-known Shamans, healers and Tibetan Buddhist Rinpoches (Living Buddha). He is the current lineage holder of a Taoist practice. The Awareness Intensive: Uncovering the REAL YOU!

The Awareness Intensive is a profound process. It is offered internationally, and is based on the use

of a Zen “Koan” or question, that provokes you into finding the truth of who you are within yourself! It is an insightful inquiry, beyond the pretensions and superficiality of the mind, into your true nature. You can explore a deeper connection with yourself - behind who you think you are; behind the personality; behind the masks and roles; behind what others think of you. And the result is a strong rootedness within yourself, with greater clarity about your life and deeper layers of awareness, joy, and intelligence!

Shanti Schenker-Skye has participated & led Awareness Intensives since 1974. She co-directs the Osho World of Meditation Center in Seattle with Subhan, and facilitates meditation classes, events and workshops internationally.

Breitenbush HistoryHistory of the Treesby Davi’d Rath

The temperate rain forests that hold Breitenbush Hot Springs are estimated to have existed since Cascades started to rise 7 million years ago in the Pliocene era, creating a barrier for moisture bearing clouds, and evolving to the climax stage forest mixture of Fir, Cedar, and Hemlock that we see today. For most of that time the only things that could impact a tree (or a grove, or a drainage) were the four elements —the earth could slide, windstorms could blow, rivers could flood, and large fires would periodically rage. Even the arrival of the first homo sapiens from the West 10–50 thousand years ago had little impact, the first peoples using the ridge lines as natural trails. Then about 300 years ago the second human migration to the region began, people moving from the East who had command of steel and eventually, fossil fuels.

In the 1880s a railroad was built into the forest a few miles past the current town of Detroit, bringing loggers and equipment up the mountains (as well as the first tourists to the hot springs), and to taking the logs down. By the 1950s the Willamette National Forest, where our private in-holding resides, was providing 9% of the entire national public land board footage.

The local Detroit Ranger District was the largest provider within that forest.Early in this cooperative’s history one of its pioneers, Dinah Ross, began mobilizing the Community to oppose logging, which we

could see from the meadow pools (then mostly mud bogs) as helicopters rose over the ridge carrying their trophies. The Community began to file appeals to the Environmental Impact Statements on nearby proposed timber sales. We achieved partial success in the early 80’s when the proposed “Bathhouse” sale on our border was modified to save many of the trees that now line the gravel road used to access our parking lot. Dinah tragically, and ironically, was killed along with her partner Greg by a truck from the local mill losing its load as they drove past it. The Sanctuary building is dedicated to her honor, and a nearby peak has been officially named “Dynamo Peak”.

In the mid 80s another sale was proposed on our border, a sale which would have taken the majestic old growth groves which now can be seen on the majestic 4.3 mile loop “Ancient Forest” trail which begins and ends here. This sale became a focus of Oregon forest activism, and Breitenbush provided many of the participants as well as logistic support. Vehicles were parked to block roads, tree-sitters perched while neighboring trees were felled next to them, and about 60 people were arrested for violating closure orders designed to stop protest. One protester buried himself up to his neck in a pile of rocks, a picture picked up by the wire services (and which I saw while traveling in India.) Some trees were taken, but enough delay was caused that a later injunction and subsequent legislation saved the old growth.

It had always been part of the Community’s strategy to build foot trails into the old growth so that people could experience it firsthand. The Forest Service withheld permission, and the only way to even bushwhack into the forest was through the access roads serving the 71 nearby “summer homes” on forest land. Supposedly one day a hiker from the springs hiked these access roads without clothing, and the summer homes residents convinced the Forest Service that the “naked hippie voodoo cult” needed their own access to the forest. Permission was granted and during the building of the “Spotted Owl” portion of the trail, nesting Spotted Owls were in fact discovered, eventually giving the nearby Old Growth more permanent protection under the Endangered Species Act.

Forest actions, including civil disobedience, continued on nearby sales into the early 90s, but for some period here there have been very limited sales in the Breitenbush drainage. The closest mills in nearby Idanha closed. The district saw its first administrator with a background in recreation, and Breitenbush went from regional economic villain (opposing the main Santian Canyon industry) to regional hero (bringing 0,000 or more guests to support the remaining industry of tourism). Just recently the Forest Service has begun planning for some projects in the Breitenbush drainage. Although the draft EIS is not yet available for comment, there were some portions of the preliminary proposal that seemed like they would impact the experience of our guests, and we will be keeping you informed as to your opportunities for comment. We have long understood that guests come to “bathe” in the forests as much as they do the waters.

News From Our Circleby Peter Moore, Breitenbush Business Director, [email protected]

From ‘Holy’ to ‘Holistic’For more than 30 years an

annual meeting, the “International Holistic Centers Gathering” (IHCG), has brought together founders, administrators and pro-gram directors from holistic cen-ters located throughout the world. Each year the IHCG convenes at a different center in the world and a deep conversation ensues. In the context of this gathering and these centers, the term ‘holistic’ equates

to personal growth and self-actualization, being nonsectarian and unaffiliated with any political party. I’ve had the sincere plea-sure to attend the IHCG over the past decade and both I, and Breitenbush Hot Springs, have benefitted in many ways from the unique mind-meld and practical information exchanged between colleagues involved in this meaning-making field. What a gift.

In spring, 013, I attended the IHCG at Esalen Institute, in California. There I met a participant who had not previously attended such gatherings, Isabelle Duchesneau. She told us about a new holistic center forming at the site of an historic monastery, in Quebec City, Canada. This monastery, established in 1639 by three nuns of the Order of Saint Augustine, was devoted to the healing of body and soul. These nuns, and the many who fol-lowed their example over the next almost four centuries, built their “Hotel de Dieu” inside the fortified walls of the old city, including hospital, church and four stories of rooms dedicated to the cloistered life of service and prayer. Here they mixed their apothecary medicines influenced by healing traditions from both Europe and regional native people, and here they tended the injured and ill. During the war between the English and French in the 18th Century, nuns from this monastery cared impartially for wounded soldiers from both sides. From this monastery satellite centers of healing to help all people were established throughout the Province over the centuries.

In recent years the Catholic nuns, aware of their aging and dwindling population, realized they couldn’t sustain their mission much longer. Thus they made common cause with Isabelle and other visionaries to plan for renewal of this space, where their work in service of healing, and their pursuit of the conscious sacred, could be continued beyond the boundaries of their own denomination. Isabelle and her team conducted a major fundrais-ing campaign to upgrade the historic buildings, raising millions of dollars in public/private donations, and the work commenced. It was at this point she attended the IHCG, seeking useful holistic models of healing and personal transformation applicable to developing a curriculum for the newly established holistic center

at Le Monastére.Fast forward to present. In May this year, the International

Holistic Centers Gathering convened at Le Monastére des Augustines in Quebec City, which has recently reopened. Representatives of holistic centers from Canada, China, France, Greece, India, the United Kingdom and the USA, as well as the Global Ecovillage Network, were in attendance. Discussion items included a brief state of the holistic union—a report from different centers about issues, trends, best practices, challenges, etc. Networking, marketing and the exploration of new technolo-gies to share information were dreamed into. Organizational and hierarchical structures in the context of holistic vision were dis-cussed, as well as balancing cooperation and collaboration with the reality of a shared demographic of potential clients. This last was considered in context of growing that demographic (“growing the pie”) based on cultural values that are changing all over the world, moving incrementally toward holistic awareness. Similarly, the mission, vision and purpose of holistic centers operating in a world-culture that is rapidly shifting from materialism and xeno-phobia towards ecological sustainability and inclusive diversity were also discussed. The challenge of remaining true to holistic ideals and curriculum while paying due attention to practical economic “realities”—to survive and thrive in volatile conditions of the current economic times—was explored. These and many other such conversations continue throughout the year between gatherings.

Personal reflections: Each participant of this year’s Gathering received a gift from Le Monastére, an old key that once opened a door in the monastic past, to symbolically re-enter the sacred space consciously. This key provided a poignant example of the Quebec motto, imprinted on the license plate of every vehicle in the Province, Je me souviens (“I remember”). Le Monastére des Augustines offered participants a beautiful mix of monastic and modern amenities, enhancing the experience of the International Holistic Centers Gathering, thus honoring the heritage of the place with its new mission to work toward solutions for the future. The long tradition to heal body and soul, carried on since the 6th Century through devotion of the Augustinian nuns, finds its continuation in the dedication of contemporary visionaries who build on that tradition through the non-sectarian work of this new holistic center. By extension, the coming into existence of thousands of holistic centers, emerging over the past half cen-tury in all economies, cultures and continents across our world, constitutes an important development in human consciousness and social organization. Taken together, these holistic centers are creating a worldwide network of institutions devoted to the principles, practices and peak experiences of the human potential movement. It’s an important evolutionary trend of our species.

New Community Housing!Spring of 2016 marked the beginning of

construction in a push to eliminate our

shortage of adequate community housing.

The project will result in 6 new living spaces.

Ultimately, the “multiplex” design would

include 5 buildings with 12 staff rooms plus

a common area with kitchen, bathrooms,

living room and laundry. It is located on the

“Highlands” above the flood plain where

our current housing is located. The primary

building material is “Faswall”, an eco-block

manufactured in Oregon from recycled pallets. The product has a

high R value, excellent thermal mass, excellent indoor air quality and

is low maintenance, fire proof and sound proof.
