    ATTENTION Environment and Enclosure

This equipm ent is intended for use in a Pollution

D egree 2 industrial environm ent, in overvoltage

Category II applications (as defined in IEC

publication 60664-1), at altitudes up to 2000 m eters

    w ithout derating.

This equipm ent is considered G roup 1, Class A

industrial equipm ent according to IEC/CISPR

Publication 11. W ithout appropriate precautions,

there m ay be potential difficulties ensuringelectrom agnetic com patibility in other environm ents

due to conducted as w ell as radiated disturbance.

This equipm ent is supplied as open type

equipm ent. It m ust be m ounted w ithin an enclosure

that is suitably designed for those specific

environm ental conditions that w ill be present and

appropriately designed to prevent personal injuryresulting from accessibility to live parts. The interior

of the enclosure m ust be accessible only by the use

of a tool. Subsequent sections of this publication

m ay contain additional inform ation regarding

specific enclosure type ratings that are required to

com ply w ith certain product safety certifications.

See N EM A Standards publication 250 and IEC

publication 60529, as applicable, for explanations of

the degrees of protection provided by different

types of enclosure. Also, see the appropriate

sections in this publication, as w ell as the

    Allen-Bradley publication 1770-4.1 (Industrial

    About This Manual

U se this m anual as a guide to install the adapter.

The m anual covers hardw are installation and other inform ationrelated to get you started.

    About the Adapter

    The 1734-AD N (X) PO IN T I/O D eviceN et Adapter is a com m unicationadapter for PO IN T I/O m odules.

The adapter provides an interface for controlling and com m unicating

w ith PO IN T I/O m odules on a D eviceN et netw ork.

    For More Information

For m ore detailed inform ation about use of the adapter, refer to the

    PO IN T I/O D eviceN et Adapter user m anual, publication 1734-U M 002.

It is available online at U RL http://literature.rockw ellautom ation.com .

IMPORTANT In this m anual, w e use 1734-AD N (X) to refer to both of

    the follow ing adapters:

    1734-AD N PO IN T I/O D eviceN et Adapter

    1734-AD N X PO IN T I/O D eviceN et Adapter w ith

    Subnet Expansion

    W e use 1734-AD N to refer only to the 1734-AD N

adapter and 1734-AD N X to refer only to the

    1734-AD N X adapter. W e also refer to the 1734-AD N (X)

PO IN T I/O D eviceN et Adapter as the adapter.

    Install the Adapter

To install the adapter on the D IN rail prior to installing other base

    units, proceed as follow s.

    1. Position the adapter vertically in front of the D IN rail.

    2. Press firm ly to install the adapter on the D IN rail.

The locking m echanism locks the adapter to the D IN rail.

ATTENTION PO IN T I/O is grounded through the D IN rail to

chassis ground. U se zinc-plated, yellow -chrom ated

steel D IN rail to assure proper grounding. The use

of D IN rail m aterials (e.g., alum inum , plastic, etc.)

that can corrode, oxidize, or are poor conductors, can result in im proper or interm ittent grounding.

Secure D IN rail to m ounting surface approxim ately

Install a Replacement Adapter in an Existing System

Your existing control application m ay be using another D eviceN et

adapter (for exam ple, 1734-PD N ) that you w ant to replace w ith a

1734-AD N (X) D eviceN et adapter. Rem ove the existing adapter fromthe D IN rail as follow s.

    1. Rem ove pow er to the adapter and all I/O m odules in your

    existing system .

    2. Rem ove the w iring assem bly and D eviceN et cable from your

    existing adapter.

    3. Rem ove the adjacent I/O m odule.

WARNING W hen you insert or rem ove the m odule w hilebackplane pow er is on, an electrical arc can occur.

This could cause an explosion in hazardous

    location installations.

Be sure that pow er is rem oved or the area is

    nonhazardous before proceeding. Repeated

electrical arcing causes excessive w ear to contacts

on both the m odule and its m ating connector.

W orn contacts m ay create electrical resistance that

    can affect m odule operation.

WARNING W hen you connect or disconnect the Rem ovable

Term inal Block (RTB) w ith field-side pow er

applied, an electrical arc can occur. This could

cause an explosion in hazardous location

    installations.

Be sure that pow er is rem oved or the area is
