A Message from Father Charles Fink Page 3

My dear parish family, Here are some great resources to inspire and inform your Catholic faith, most of them free and online. WWW.FORMED.ORG: Access it using our parish code (XZHKBF) and register using your email address and a password of your own devising. A world of movies, video presentations by first rate teachers and speakers, downloadable e-books, and audio talks on a variety of subjects will all be available to you. WWW.MYCATHOLIC.COM: Make it your homepage or just visit it for access to a broad range of articles from a wide array of sources. WWW.FATHERJOHNKEEP.ORG: Here you’ll find written excerpts from and complete audio versions of spiritual conferences and homilies by a revered English spiritual director and guide. WWW.ALETEIA.ORG: This is a site filled with interesting, topical blogs and articles on the Catholic faith. MAGNIFICAT: This monthly periodical contains all the prayers and read-ings for the month’s daily and Sunday Masses, plus meditations, inspiring essays, morning and evening prayers, and much else. You can subscribe at: Magnificat, PO Box 822, Yonkers, NY 10702 for $44.95/year, or online: www.magnificat.com. A recent poll suggested that as many as 50% of our children and youth are losing their faith between the ages of 10 and 17. Part of the reason for that is the secular, materialistic, skeptical, atmosphere in which they are growing up. And one manifestation of that is the poor practice and ignorance of the faith of many Catholic adults. Don’t be part of the problem. Make your faith central to your life, not peripheral. Educate yourself. Show your children and grandchildren by your prayer and example how important the Catholic faith is to you. Let them see that you cherish and study the faith and give time each day to nurturing it. These resources will help. With love and prayers

Fr. Charles Fink

WHAT CATHOLICS BELIEVE; WHY THEY BELIEVE IT 15. JESUS AND HIS CHURCH

Jesus came into the world to reveal to us what God is like and what we are supposed to be like, to show us the true nature of love, and to unite Himself to us in such a way that His life might become our life, to ransom us from our sins. Given His knowledge of human nature, it is hard to believe that, having gone to the trouble He did to accomplish His mission, He would leave us, after His res-urrection and ascension, with nothing but a book, even one as splendid as the Bi-ble, and an invisible relationship to Himself to keep us on the straight and nar-row path. Imagine our country run without any authority, just a copy of the Con-stitution given to each citizen, with each free to interpret it according to his or her own lights. What better prescription for chaos? In fact, what Jesus did to see that His work of life-giving and truth-teaching would continue was found a Church to which He made very specific promises and gave very specific powers. How could He have not? To reveal something, then to ensure that it continues to be revealed in all its fullness and integrity, an authoritative interpreter of that revelation must be established. No established authority, no revelation; only your word against mine. As Cardinal Newman put it in his monumental work on The Development of Doctrine, “A revelation is not given, if there be no authority to decide what it is that is given.” How are we to know for certain who Jesus is and what He stands for? How are we to be sure what He wants of us? The Bible sheds a great deal of light but is subject to myriad interpretations. Private inspirations may guide, but how know if they are from God, the devil, or just our own inner selves, which may be warped and in error? Only an authority established by Jesus, present here and now, can assure us that we have not gone astray, distorting the revela-tion God has given us, creating a religion in our own image and for our own convenience. We know God best and most surely through Jesus. We know Jesus best and most surely through the Church He founded. Apart from that Church there may be much that is good and true and beautiful, but there can never be fullness of these transcendent realities, and there will always be the danger, even more, given the weakness and willfulness of human nature, the certainty of an admix-ture of serious error.

There are many couples who long for a child, but are unable to conceive. They are not alone. Recognizing this desire, Catholic Health Services (CHS) invites women to reach out in hope to the Gianna of Long Island Center for Women’s Health and Fertility based at CHS’s Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip to learn more about our services, in-cluding Restorative Reproductive Medi-cine. At Gianna, we offer new natural women’s health care that seeks to identify the source of infertility and address it so that concep-tion can occur naturally. This method has proven highly successful, even for women who have tried other methods. Please call Gianna today 631 376-3232

Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) Orders

A “Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) Order, signed by a physician, is a medical order that will instruct medical personnel not to attempt cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) if a patient’s heartbeat or breathing stops. CPR generally includes chest compressions, defib-rillation, insertion of a tube to open the air-way, or other resuscitation techniques. A DNR order is only about CPR and does not affect any other treatment.
