Harmenix— All Male Vocal Group

On Friday, November 20, the 6th grade student council put on a party at the school for their classmates. The students collected two large containers of canned food for CAER: a total of 197 pounds! The night of fun and competition began with Turkey Bingo. Then, students tested their ability to solve clues in the first team challenge: a scavenger hunt. The dodgeball tournament filled the gym with laughter as the students cheered on their friends with each team anxiously awaiting their turn to play. Thanksgiving Trivia and a pie-eating contest also delighted the

kids. Throughout the night, the teams showed their Spectrum spirit as they competed for the grand prize. The winning team, the Turkey Bash Titans, had the privilege of earning the official Turkey Bash trophy. Volunteers generously provided an abun-dance of food and help for the night. The 6th grade Student Council did a remarkable job showing initiative in planning, setting up, leading, and cleaning up after the event. Have you ever known a tote bag to change the world? How about a tie-blanket? The Students 'N Sidekicks High School Service Learning group is about to see how their crafting skills in sewing tote bags stuffed with school supplies and gifts and their creating 18 tie-blankets donated by Joann Fabrics and United Way will change the lives of inner-city St. Paul students. St. Paul's Cornerstone Montessori School is an extremely impoverished school that has been our sister school and partner in Service Learning for Students 'N Sidekicks for the past three years. Each year in Decem-ber and in April / May, Spectrum Service Learning kids visit the school bearing gifts and leave with so much more than they planned on giving. The experience is life-changing. In previous years, we've sewn winter hats and also scarves for these children; this year, thanks to an out-of-state fabric donation, we've sewn school tote bags, and we have made tie-blankets for them through United Way contributions. The boxes of gifts are packed: we leave to bring the tote bags, stuffed with books and donations from the successful school supplies-gathering Senior Project of Service Learning member senior Jami Jen-sen, and tie-blankets next week. On these field trips, photos are taken, friendships are forged, and hugs are everywhere. Students are personally impacted by the Cornerstone demographics of culture, religion, familial status, income, and race, but that never impedes the relationships that form. The students see the personal connection with the Cornerstone kids through what they've been doing in class once we visit, and the effects are remarkable: there is so much laughter and joy. Students 'N Sidekicks welcomes any donations of craft supplies and appreciates your support!

This semester, the Book W.O.R.M.S. [Working On Reading More Stories] Service Learning Group has had the privi-lege of reading to a class of pre-schoolers at the Handke Cen-ter. The sixth graders prepare for their reading buddy time by picking out pic-ture books to read to their buddies and creating an early literacy skill-building activity. The students have quickly formed bonds

with their buddies and will greatly miss them at the end of the semester. We have also had the opportunity to spend one Service Learning time dusting bookshelves at the Elk River Library. We were honored to be able to help out a local institution that so generously serves our community!

Students were asked what they liked best about ASL Club, and responses varied: Carly, a 7th grader at SHS, says the best part of ASL Club is that “you get to meet new people and can learn a really cool language!” Klara, (7th grader) adds, “I think it’s a really useful thing to know languages in our society.” Fellow 7th grader, Sam S., says she “has a passion for sign-ing, and it is fun to learn.” Illysa (6th grade) and Elias (7th grade) agree: they love learning new signs every day. Mary, an 8th grader at SHS, says, “I like ASL because of the friends I make.” ASL Club wraps up on January 14th. If you would like to see a demon-stration of what the students have learned or are interested in ASL in general, come to Mrs. Williams’s room in the Grade 6 building on January 14th at 4:15pm for a re-telling of the favorite children’s book, Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See?

I have two children at Spectrum: one in 8th grade and one in 6th grade. I am working as a reading and math intervention teacher at Parnassus Preparatory in Maple Grove. When I am not working or shooting archery, I enjoying reading, scrapbooking, and playing with our animals. I was introduced to archery last year when I enrolled my kids in archery at Whitcomb’s. Since my kids were learning so much and were having so much fun, I decided I needed to give it a try, too. I was able to get BAI [Basic Archery Instructor] certified in January of this year. I am looking forward to coaching and to introducing more students to the sport .
