ANNUAL CIRCULAR.

In entering upon our Fifteenth year the Faculty feels. mor

than ev r before, certain of the continued and increasing URe­

fulne s of this De!Mrtment, and assures the Alumni and all

friends of medical culture that its aim will be to leave noth­

ing undone which can f.lctlitate a thorough course of instruc­

tion upon each bran h here taught.

The senior members of the Faculty are already so well

known by their pwfessional brethren of the gre,it Northwest,

that the assurance that each is fully committed and devotedto the te,lchlng of hi~ chair will, they conceive, he sufficient

guarantee of their succes~ful working, and to their numberhave been added three gentlemen, who having served as Lec­

turers upon the several subjects of "Di~ease~ of the Mind,"

, Hygiene antI Dermatology," and "Diseases of the Eye, Ear

and Throat" during the past session, were found to be men

worthy of preferment for these sev'~ral positions.

The St. Vincent's Hospital, uncler the arc of Dr. Henry

E. Jones and Professor Rex; the Good Samaritall Ifospital,

untler Professors S.lylor and WIlson; the J1Ialtllolllaii COlflfly

It will be the aim of this I>epartment to afford the best

possible opportunities for the prosecution of each hranch ofstudy, and each chair will he supplied with all needed appa­

ratuses, appliances, modeL, c!urts, etc., and especial attention

He must ha\'e studied medicine for not less than three

years, and have attended at least one course of Practical

Anatomy in the dissecting room. He must pre,ent to the

Dean of the Faculty a Thesis of his own composition. correct·

Iy written and In his own handwriting, on some medical sub­

ject; and exhibit to the Fdculty, at his examin ttion, sati iac­

tory evidence of his professional attainments.

If. Students who have attended one com;:>lete course in a

respectable Me lical School, where attendance on two com­

plete courses is necessary to a degree, and where the same

branches are taught a>l ill this, are permitted to becom candi­

dates by an attendance here on one full cour,e; the rules of

gl'lduuLion being in other respects observed. They are also

exempted from the payment of fees upon attending a second

term.

IIi. Students who have attended two full courses on

Anatomy, Chemistry, Materia f1Iedir.a or Physiology may be

examined on any of these branches, at the end uf their second

course. They are thus enabled to devote a Lhird course to the

didactiC lectures on the rem:lIning branches, and to clinical

"tudy. The Faculty rc ommend to students the importance,

when at all practicable, of atten'ling tltree courses of lectures

before presenting themselves as candidates for graduJtion.

IV. The degree will not be onferrerI upon allY candidate

ASSOCIATION OF AMERICAN MEDICAL COLLEGE

ARTICLE I. OF THE FAC(;LT\".

·1 he medical members of the Farulty must be rp/ill!"r grad­

uates or licentiates ancl pra titioners of medicine, in good

standing. using the wore! "regular" in the sense commonlyunderstood in the m c1ical profession.

ARnCI.E II. OF TUITION.

SECTION l. The schcmc of tuition shall provide for a ycarly

systematic course of instruction covering the general topics of

Anatomy, incluJ ing r] issections, Ph ysiology, Chemistry, Ma­

teria ~redica and 'l'herap utics, Obstetrics, Surgery, P.lthology

and Praclice of Medicine. The collegiate seSSion, wherein

the course is given, shall be understood as the "regular" I

session.

SEC. 2. Said regular se sion shall be not Ie s than twenty

wecks in duration. This ection .0 go in force at and afterthe ession of 1879-80.

SEC. 3. ot more than one regular session, counting the

regular session as one 01' the three courses of instru tion re­

qu;red for grarluation, shall be held in the same year.

ARTICLE II!. REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATION.

No ]Jel'son, whether a graduate in medicine or not, shall be

given a diploma of "Doctor of Medicine," who shall not have

2. He must file a satisfactory certificate of having studied

medicine at least three years under a regie/a)" graduate, or

licentiate and pra tllioner of m~dicine, in good standing,

using the word "regular" in the sense commonly understoodin the medical profe sion. TO candidate shall be eligible for

final examination for graduation, unless his term of three

year's study shall have been completed, or shall expire at a

nate not later than three months after the close of the final

exall1inations; this clause to take effect at and after the session

of 1879-80.3. He must file the proper official evidence th 1t, during

the above mentioned thl'ee years he has m.ltriculated at some

affiliated college or culleges, for three regular sessions, and in

the cours~ of the same (except as provided in 4) has attended

three full course of instruction on the seven topics mentioned

must have been attended at the college issuing the diploma.

4. In case a college shall adopt a systemat,c graduated

scheme of tuition, attendance on the whole of the same shall

in Article II, and requires attendanc~ at, at least, three regu­

ular Collegiate I 'essions of not less than twenty weeks' duration

An honorary clegree of "Doctor of Medicine" may be

granted in numbers not exceeding one ye,lrly, to distinguished

physicIans or scientific men of over forty years of age. But

in ueh case the diploma shall bear across its f,lce the II' I'd

"Honorary," in conspicuous char,l ters; and the same word

shall always be appended to the name of the recipient in all

Ii ts of grad uates.

SEcnoN J. All fees shall be paid in lawful money. and no

promissory notes 01' promises shall be accepted in lieu of c.lsh

for payment of fees.

SI;:C. 2. No ti ket, or other certificate of attendance lIpon

collegiate exercises, shall be issued to any student until the

dues for the same shall have been fully paid.

SEC. 3. The estal·llshed fee for the exercises of the regu.

lar session, except the matri ulation fee, graduation fee, and

fee for dissections, may be reduced not more than one·half to

graduates of other affiliated colleges of less than three years'

standing, and to undergr,iduates ot the same who have already

attended tll'O full courses of tl'e instruction of the regular

session.

SEC. 4. The same fees may be remitted altogether to a

college's 011'11 alumni, to gl'aduates of other affiliated alleges

01' three years' standing-the three years dating from the time

of graduation, and ending aL the close of the regular session

for whIch the tickets are gi\'en -to undergraduates II'ho have

SEC. 5. The same fees may be reduced or remitted to de­

serving indigent student,;, to a number not exceeding nve per

cent. of the number of matriculates at the previolls regular

session of the college.

moneys after payment of fees, or an appropriation of the funds

thereof, shall he deemed violation of the provisions of this

article in regard to remission or reduction of fees.

shall have been excluded from the list of affiliated colleges

ARTICLE VI I. ADVERTISE~IENTS.

No ollege shall advertise in any other than a strictly mecli­

cal publication the names of its professors with their respective

chairs.
