Emily's parents had been transported as convicts to Tasmania in the 1830s. Her parents and siblings settled in Geelong in the early 1850s and moved to Anakie in c1856 where they had a small farm. After the farm was destroyed by bushfires before 1874, the family moved to Geelong West. Emily's husband was a bootmaker who went to South Africa around the turn of the century and was never heard of after 1914. 1893-94 Emily was listed as operating a registry office in Autumn Street. Their last child was born in Lethbridge in 1896 and in June 1896 Emily was admitted to Kew Asylum. In 1915 she was transferred to Beechworth Mental Hospital where she died in 1946.

Marjorie LAWRENCE:"Marjorie became a famous Australian opera singer. Her career was launched in 1928 when she won an aria contest at the Geelong Musical Festival. Soon after she went to Paris to study singing and made her debut at the Paris Opera House in Lohengrin in less than 5 years. In 1935 she sang Brunnhilde in Die Walkure at the New York Metropolitan Opera. Triump followed triumph until she was suddenly struck down with polio which left her partly paralysed. Her story is one of fortitude and indominable courage, of husbandly devotion and a hard won victory to be able to sing again. She died in 1979.

When marrying Lizzie named Caramut as her birthplace. Her brother was registered there the following year. The Westaway family was in Geelong by 1859 when a sister was born Chilwell. Lizzie was widowed in 1884. No issue traced to her. It is possible Lizzie and her unmarried sister Anne [page 9 line 26] were living with their parents in Hawkes Lane off Mercer St where John was listed on rates for 1892. She may have continued to live with Anne aftertheir parents' deaths and Anne's marriage. Age at death seems incorrect but both parents named in registration.[Lizzie signed her birthday as 25 January in my [Alwyne Merritt] gt g'mother's birthday book]

Notice in the Geelong Advertiser: a claim for adverse possession of land Thomas St cnr Gertrude [west side]. Last owner [in the 1890s!] William STOTT. Out of curiousity I went to have a look and a house facing Gertrude St was for sale and the driveway off Thomas St abutted other properties before leading to a garage. I would think this was the family property. William the eldest and his next brother Walter weregold dealers then jewellers in Geelong having come from mining in the Morrisons area. [Robert who married Jane MOLYNEUX was the fourth brother].

Widowed 1893 when son Charles was an infant. No living descendants. Lived while married in Wellington St next to Cox family. Jane's brother Edwin had married Annie Perriton. She lived with them after being widowed. A very kind and caring person who worked hard to 'earn her keep' and was much loved by the family. Strong Methodist Church connections - organist for many years. Her greatest extravagance was to buy or refurbish a hat each season which had to look elegant from the back which was the view seen by the congregation.
