Dear Parishioners:
Lately, I have been thinking a lot about the great privilege that we Catholics have been given – that we may receive the Body and Blood of Christ in Holy Communion. One of the things the Disciple Maker Index survey revealed is that a substantial majority of respondents (both for St. Andrew Parish and across the Diocese) believe that the Holy Eucharist is truly the Body and Blood of Christ. That is certainly a strength, but the respondents to the DMI were mostly those who attend Mass regularly. What about those who no longer attend Mass regularly? I was recently having a conversation with a parishioner who was lamenting that participation in Sunday Mass is no longer a priority for many. He remarked, “I believe that the Eucharist is the greatest gift ever! When you think that this is truly the Body and Blood of Christ given to us! I can’t understand why people don’t want to come to Mass or say that they don’t get anything out of Mass!”
While there is much work to be done to draw people back to Mass, I also want to consider how we ought to prepare ourselves to receive this “greatest gift ever” when we come to Mass. We all learned when we were prepared for our First Communion, that we must be properly disposed to receive the Sacrament. We must be in the state of grace, we must observe the Eucharistic fast.
I came across the ancient document titled “The Teaching of the Twelve Apostles” or “Didache” in the Liturgy of the Hours last week, which dates to the very early church and describes how, even in the earliest days of Christianity, it was necessary for each Christian to consider their own worthiness to receive Communion. It states: “Do not let anyone eat or drink your Eucharist except those who have been baptized in the name of the Lord. For the statement of the Lord applies here also: ‘Do not give to dogs what is holy.’” It also states: “If anyone is holy, let him come. If anyone is not, let him repent.” And further explains: “On the Lord’s day, when you have been gathered together, break bread and celebrate the Eucharist. But fi rst, confess your sins so that your offering may be pure. If anyone quarrels with his neighbor, that person should not join until he has been reconciled. Your sacrifi ce must not be defi led.”
Let us always strive to receive Holy Communion worthily and frequently!
Your Pastor,Msgr. Stephan Moloney

REAL PRESENCE, REAL FUTURE REFLECTIONS: JULY 11, 2021 “THE HEART OF CHRISTIAN VOCATION”
In this week’s Gospel, the apostles are chosen to participate in the salvifi c mission of Christ. They were given authority to preach and heal in His name across the land, to invite others to accept and believe in the Gospel. Our Christian vocation calls us into a contemplative life in Christ and living the teachings of the Gospel by our words and deeds. We are united in the Mystical Body of Christ through the Sacrament of the Eucharist. As each day passes, let us continue to strive to live a life of holiness and continue the mission of Christ, to be missionary disciples.
To read more about how we are growing together in faith and discipleship in the Diocese of Columbus, visit www.RealPresenceRealFuture.org.

COLLECTION COUNTERS: We are looking for volunteers to assist in counting the Sunday Offertory each week. Optimally, we would like to have about 140 volunteers available to schedule throughout the year. If you’ve been a counter in the past and would like to resume, we’d like to have you back. If you’ve never counted before but would like to become involved, we provide training. Counters need to be discreet and able to follow direction. For more information or to volunteer, contact Andy Naporano, 614-451-4290, ext. 102 or [email protected].
ALTAR SERVERS: There are still spots available for servers through September. For more information or to sign up, log in to your Ministry Scheduler account or visit www.rotundasoftware.com/ministry/standrewcolumbus. The scheduling is by volunteer only, so instead of being signed up for a time to serve based on your preferences, you can just log in and choose times & dates that work for your family. If you have any questions or need to have your
Log-in and/or Password reset, please email offi [email protected].
WEEKDAY MASS LECTORS: If you are interested in reading at daily morning Masses, please take an opportunity to pray and ask the Holy Spirit if He is inviting you to become part of the Lector Ministry at St. Andrew Parish. For more information, contact Catherine Covarrubias, 614-404-2418 or [email protected].
TECH TEAM: We are looking for volunteers to help livestream Masses and special events for those who are homebound or unable to attend in-person Mass.
Volunteers should be at least 18 years of age and out of high school. No experience is needed, training will be provided. For more information or to volunteer, contact Mary Beasecker, [email protected].
On behalf of The Open Shelter, we would like to thank all the St. Andrew parishioners who have contributed to the monthly Thursday meals
provided during the past nine months to The Open Shelter. In the days of this pandemic and COVID-19 restrictions, the St. Andrew group was not able to prepare and serve a full dinner as we have in the past, but you have stepped up by providing the food monthly for a luncheon meal that The Open Shelter staff have warmed and served to their guests. Your generosity in support of this meal that serves the homeless and marginally housed in Columbus is outstanding and greatly appreciated!
Our activities are taking a summer hiatus, but will return in some fashion in the fall (hopefully to once again prepare and serve an evening meal). Thank you to all for your generosity in support of this ministry. St. Andrew Open Shelter Dinner Group Coordinators (Kathy Couvreur, Tom Couvreur, Keith Gengras)
“He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick – no food, no sack, no money in their belts.” Mark 6:8
Imagine taking nothing but a stick when you go on a trip. The Apostles must have really trusted in God’s providential care. Think of all the material things “we can’t live without” in today’s world. We make our life’s journey more diffi cult because of all the mate-rial baggage that we drag along. Putting God fi rst in everything and putting our money and possessions second gives us freedom because we don’t become “slaves” to wanting to acquire more things.
Learn how you can share what you have to support your parish and contact The Catholic Foundation. Visit www.catholic-foundation.org/development for more information.
