This narrative describes the ceremony held in the Basilica of Saint Peter in Rome on May 18, 1716as part of the elaborate ritual of beatification for Jean-Francois Regis, a Jesuit minister (b. 31 January1597 in the village of Fontcouverte [department of Aude]-d. at la Louvesc, 30 December 1640).

Regis spent most of his life in the missions of assistance to the poor, and worked particularly for theconversion of the Huguenots. He was preparing to embark on a mission to Canada when he diedduring the harsh winter of 1640. The canonization was completed in 1727. This description coversthe decorations of the facade and interior of church, as well as religious costumes worn. Special largemedallions of the Regis were also hung, and a painting of him by Domenico Maria Muratori[1661-1744]. Also described in this short pamphlet are details of the arrangement and placement ofattendees.

Relazione mentions the music composed by Domenico Scarlatti and the tapestries created byRaphael of Urbino. Featured were four choirs of the best and most renowned musicians of Rome, distributed in two great banks, also nobly adorned with fine tapestries, from where during both Massand Vesperes were heard new compositions made for the event by Domenico Scarlatti [1685-1757]most worthy Maestro di Cappella of St. Peter...the composer and friend of Handel. This print pokes fun at those who persons with thick, bulbous noses that are, according thepseudoscience of physiognomy, thought to be insensitive or clumsy or brutish. It could also picturethe stereotypical Jew with a freakishly large nose. Guitarra española, is a theory and method book (without music) that provides basic instruction onhow to play the Baroque guitar in a rasqueado style. Topics covered include tuning, formation andfingering of chords, and how to accompany popular dances of the day. Notable for itsforward-looking concept of harmony, Amat's Guitarra española was one of the most influentialtreatises on the guitar. The 1745 Gerona: Joseph Bró edition is printed in separate sections ofSpanish (pp. 3-38) and in Catalan, (pp. 39-56). The book (bearing early chord and hand positions)revises and simplifies the original edition 16th century edition.

The author Joan Carles Amat [Carles y Amat, Joan] (b. Monistrol de Montserrat, ca. 1572; dMonistrol de Montserrat, 10 Feb 1642) was a Catalan theorist, musician, and physician. Biographicalinformation about Amat is drawn mainly from research carried out in 1918 by José Vilar (RevistaIlustrada Jorba [1925] and Pujol [1950]). Amat became municipal physician at Monistrol in 1618,performed a similar function at the nearby monastery of Montserrat, and occupied several othermunicipal offices. At the time of his death, he had just started a term as mayor.

The published history of the editions is confusing: The original treatise Guitarra española y vandolaen dos maneras de guitarra castellana y valenciana de cinco ordines was probably published in1596, although the earliest edition we have bears a 1626 imprint (Lérida: Anglada & Llorens).According to Grove, In the eighteenth century the 1596 edition treatise was combined with asupplement entitled Tractat breu, y explicacio dels punts de la guitarra, comprising five chapters,in Catalan or Valencian depending on the place of printing. The earliest surviving edition with thissupplement is dated 1701 and published by Gabriel Brò when the Brò family was located inBarcelona (see copy in BNE M.FOLL/422/11 1000524539). The Valencian imprint found in theBNE is published by Agustin Laborda, 1758.

A rare imprint. Gerona (Girona) is a lovely Roman era village 100 kilometers north and east ofBarcelona. It had few printers in the 17th and early 18th centuries. References: Anglés y Subirá, vol.III: no. 109; RISM B/VI/1: p. 84; OCLC: Yale, OSU (Facsimile only).

12. Boieldieu, Francois Adrien (1775-1834). Le calife de Bagdad: opera en un acte . . . parolesde S. Just; musique de Boieldieu. [Paris]: Chez Vente, libraire, boulevard des Italiens, No. 340, presla rue Favart, An IX [1800?] Original edition.

8vo. Modern wrappers. 49pp. Very good copy. Libretto, including cast list. Opera comique in oneact by Adrien Boieldieu to a libretto by Claude de Saint-Just [Godart d’Aucourt; 1768-1826]. Isaoun(tenor), Caliph of Baghdad, wishes to be loved for himself, not for his wealth and position;consequently, he pays court to Zétulbe (soprano) in disguise. When Isaoun is mistaken for anotorious local brigand of extreme ferocity, Zemaide (mezzo-soprano), Zetulbe’s mother, is terrified, but Zetulbe remains faithful to the man she has grown to love.

With Le calife de Bagdad, which was given in more than 800 performances by the Opera-Comiqueby mid-century, Boieldieu scored his first major operatic success. The subject may be farcical, butit is handled with wit, while the music, as in all the composer’s best works, is beautifully fabricatedand elegantly finished. Boieldieu did not attempt to introduce any so-called orientalisms into hismusic, but his use of orchestral color does suggest the East–or rather the East as seen by Westerneyes and heard by Western ears. The entire play consists of a comedy of character l’Inquiet; of intrigue l’Etourderie*;and of episode Les Originaux.** According to notes in the BnF’s record of Fagan’s plays, LesCaracteres de Thalie reflects an ingenious and innovative idea to assemble the different kinds ofcomedy into a unified whole, introduced by a Prologue.

With a comfortable position in government, Fagan took a liking to theater and wrote some thirtyplays presented mostly at Théâtre de la foire, Théâtre-Italien and Théâtre-Français. He had the germof genius for comedy, but according to Godefroy (Iip.245), his laziness, his melancholyindifference, and his taste for easy pleasures, prevented his full development as a playwright. Nevertheless, Fagan was important in his time. He was influential and celebrated even by Voltairewho thought Fagan’s La Pupille, 1734, was the “most complete petite pièce on the French stage.” (Knight p.171). David Garrick wrote The Guardian (1759) a two act comedy adapted from Fagan’sLa Pupille which, according to Knight “just misses the tenderness of the original.”

*l’Etourderie is the only one of the three plays to be restaged after 1737.**According to Godefroy (ibid), Les Originaux, was Fagan’s best prose comedy, a remarkablespecimen of what is called episodic comedy, a genre that excludes all action and consists only ofa series of unconnected tirades or scenes.

18. Hörmann, Jospeh Julius von. Triumphus novem saeculorum Imperii Romano-Germanici,Leopoldo Magno, augustissimo Romanorum Imperatori . . . humillime dedicatus a . . . JosephoJulio ab Hörmann . . . .Vienna: Susanna Christina Cosmerovius, 1700. Original edition. A morecommon second edition was published in 1725 (Berlin cat. #3624), but the first edition, as here, has superior engravings. Backer-Sommervogel, I, 1569 Nr. 8 Thieme / B. X, 393.

Folio (402 x 292mm). Contemporary calf (rebacked, light wear at corners). Printed title plus 24leaves of text. With engraved allegorical frontispiece and nine full-age plates of triumphal arches.

This volume celebrates the illustrious emperors of the Holy Roman Empire (HRE) from the HRE’s inception under Charles the Great (Charlemagne) in AD 800 to the reign of Leopold of Austria(1658-1705), who was the 49th Emperor. The volume has nine chapters, each representing a century of rule. Each chapter has a highly ornamental engraving of a decorated arch bearing images of themajor figures of that century, including its emperor. The beautiful engravings—a highlight of theSouth German Baroque illustration—show triumphal arches and Ehrenpforten (Gates of Honor). The engravings, based on the drawings of Petrus Schubart von Ehrenberg (1668-ca. 1725), weredone by some of the most important engravers of Augsburg’s “golden age”: Johann Ulrich Kraus(1655-1719), Christian Engelbrecht (1672-1735), and Johann Andreas I Pfeffel (1674-1748).

According to John Hatrthan, an expert in the history of the Western illustrated book, “The transition from baroque to rococo is best observed in South Germany, particularly Bavaria. The Augsburgschool of engravers of the early eighteenth century produced exuberant freakish designs in thebaroque-rococo idiom that it would be hard to match elsewhere . . . [These artists] are still littleknown outside their country of origin. . . Fantasy architecture reaches even dizzier heights in [JohannUlrich] Kraus’ engravings” (referring to the 1725 edition of this work) (139-140).With French festival design Influence

French festival design is particularly noticeable in this work. Leopold I, in his attempt to solidifythe protean Holy Roman Empire, was trying to compete with his French contemporary Louis XIV’storrent of festivals and festival publications. The specific comparison of Leopold I to Louis XIVcomes from R. J. W. Evans: “By 1700 Emperor Leopold I had proved remarkably successful inconsolidating and representing the powers of his office. Moreover, these similarities wereincreasingly communicated through a heightened ‘baroque’ repertoire of imperial symbols, ritualsand ceremonial. Intensive study of late has revealed the extent of that aulic cultural display—notinferior to, and hardly less influential than, the simultaneous imagery of the Sun King. It rested onmulti-media panegyric in texts, music and theatre, architecture and elaborate decorative schemes”(119).

The printer: Susanna Christina Cosmerovius (1632-1702), Vienna printer and bookseller was thewidow of Matthew Cosmerovius who had run a prosperous printing business from the 1660s.Matthew’s publications included some of the most important festival books of Vienna in this periodincluding Sbarra’s La Contesa dell’Aria (1667) and Il pomo d’oro Festa Teatrale (1668). By allaccounts, Susanna Christina was a gifted and highly respected printer and publisher

Goudar, a staunch supporter of French music, vehemently attacks Italian music but presentsinteresting ideas about the musicality of the Italian language, as well as the French. Goudar comments on the stunning growth of Italian opera throughout Europe in the 18th century inthe often quoted lines "The late king of Poland would pay 100,000 ecus for the performance of eachnew opera... Russia, which has not sounded a note at the beginning of the century, has acquired sucha taste for opera that it pays more for an opera singer than a military general." Ange Goudar,(1720-1787) was a Frenchman from Montpellier who lived in Switzerland, England and Italy, wroteover thirty works (some with his brilliant wife Sara) on subjects ranging from ballet to agrarianeconomics.
