18th July 2019 Persistence Confidence Getting Along Organisation Resilience Welcome Back Welcome back everyone for Term 3. It was great to see all the smiling faces going into classes on Monday morning. You may have noticed some extra students in some grades. We have 6 international students attending our school for the next 2 – 4 weeks to be immersed in the language and culture here. Buildings Thank you to all the parents and students who use the Coast Banksia entrance for your patience and understanding whilst the Inclusive room and playground works are in progress. We appreciate that access from that gate is somewhat compromised but the short term pain is definitely worth the long term gain. The works are progressing really well. I have been assured that the works are well and truly on time and on budget. The relocatable was moved over the holidays and now all our Year 1/2s are in the same area which will make collaborative and cooperative work between the grades far more efficient. Online Uniform Shop A gentle reminder that the uniform shop is now online. If you havent already downloaded the App, the instructions for downloading it are on Compass. The uniform shop will be open on the first Tuesday of each month for sales of second hand uniforms. Main Car Park This seems to come up frequently each year. The arrows and the speed limit are there for the safety of all users, pedestrians and drivers. Please ensure that you follow the directions at all times for everyones sake! N.B. The lower car park is for staff and emergency parking only. It will be chained off between 9am and 3:30pm on week days. Parent Opinion Survey The Parent Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is conducted amongst a sample of randomly selected parents. It is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of parentsperceptions of school climate, student behaviour and student engagement. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies. Approximately 30 per cent of parents will be invited to participate in this year s survey. All responses to the survey are anonymous. This year the Parent Opinion Survey will be conducted from Monday 22 rd July to Sunday 11 th August. Welcome Back Welcome back everyone for Term 3. It was great to see all the smiling faces going into classes on Monday morning. You may have noticed some extra students in some grades. We have 6 international students attending our school for the next 2 – 4 weeks to be immersed in the language and culture here.

If you haven’t already downloaded the App, the instructions for downloading it are on Compass. The uniform shop will be open on the first Tuesday of each month for sales of second hand uniforms.

Main Car Park This seems to come up frequently each year. The arrows and the speed limit are there for the safety of all users, pedestrians and drivers. Farmers’ Market Thank you to everyone who braved the cold, wintery weather on Sunday to come out to the Farmers’ Market and to those who volunteered their time to assist with gate collection, set up, pack up and on the BBQ. We had 28 stalls this month and 460 visitors through the gate. A good result given the weather! Thank you to all of the families who gave up their time to help on the day: Jon C, Amy D, Justin B, Paul K, Ilya G, Brett S, Michelle S, Julian S, Andrew D, Matthew F, Anita M, Pam P, Anita P, Jane B, Katarina D, Marijke E, Kate A, Julia AW and to all of the students who came along with their parents to help. It was great to the Year 3/4 children helping out on the gates and packing up at the end of the market. Our Year 1/2 area will be coordinating volunteers for the August market. We encourage our Year 1/2 families to help out in August and in return, $500 from the funds raised at the market will go towards the Year 1/2 area. If you are available to volunteer for the August market, please complete the Google form using the link below: https://forms.gle/qtkFic3dqHxNLzdn9

Parents and Friends Committee (P&F) Our P&F committee are responsible for organising a range of fantastic fundraising events for the school throughout the year. So far this year, they have organised the Mystery Movie Night, Mother’s Day Stall and BBQ breakfast. Upcoming events include the Father’s Day stall and breakfast, parents social evening and colourthon. In order for the P&F to continue to run and be successful in organising these great events for the school, we need more volunteers to help out on the committee. Without further support, we may not be able to provide all of the planned activities for the remainder of the year. P&F committee meetings are now moving to Friday mornings. If you are interested in joining or finding out more, please come along to our next meeting being held on Friday 16

th August at 9am in the staffroom. It would be great to see some new faces!

Regards,

Ken and Lisa

What’s happening in Term 3?

Prep This term is a busy term for Preps! In August we will be celebrating our 100 days of prep, followed by swimming towards the end of the term. This term also sees us beginning our gardening club program which will assist in deepening and expanding our knowledge when learning about living and non-living things in our inquiry topic. In writing, we will use the new facts we are learning to write information reports as well as learning how non-fiction texts are structured in Literacy groups. In maths we will be learning many new skills including subtraction, comparing length, weight and capacity and learning about time.

Year 1/2 In Literacy for Term 3, our year 1/2 students will be focussing on poetry, transactional texts such as letters, emails and invitations and exposition/persuasive texts in the area of writing. Students will continue to focus on their reading skills according to their individual learning needs with a focus on developing their knowledge of text specific vocabulary, decoding strategies, reading fluency and comprehension. In Maths, we will be learning about money, using tallies and graphs to display data, fractions and time. This semester, Year 1/2 students will be participating in Garden Club which will include some sessions in the kitchen cooking with produce from the garden. Students will also participate in music activities with Mr Cook, Miss Luchetti or Mr Waters. We are looking forward to another great term in Year 1/2!

Year 3/4 We have another busy and fun filled term coming up in Grade 3/4, as we head into the second half of the year! The students have been working really hard to continue developing their literacy and numeracy skills and we will continue to do this with particular focus on procedures and information reports in Writing, understanding a text during Reading and learning to tell the time and solve problems involving money during Mathematics. We are very excited to be learning all about Australian History in Inquiry and will be heading off on an excursion to the Melbourne Museum in September, where we will be looking at exhibits on Australia’s First Peoples and European Settlement in Melbourne. The students will also have the Footsteps Dance Program and Swimming to look forward to this term. There’s lots of exciting things happening and we can’t wait for another fantastic term!

Year 5/6 We have a busy term ahead in Year 5/6. The highlight of Term 3 will be the 5 day camp to Phillip Island in week 2. We are all looking forward to this outdoor education experience where the students will participate in many

team building activities. In Literacy, the students will be looking back on things they have done to review. We also explore procedural writing and end the term with narratives. Students will explore a range of texts in Reading sessions and our SMART spelling program continues also. In Numeracy, the students will be looking at

money, finding change and making transactions. They will also look at financial plans and how to calculate percentage discounts. The following units will be time, chance and geometric reasoning. Throughout the term, students will participate in weekly sessions with the ‘Footsteps’ company, learning the choreography to a range

of dances that will then be performed by the Year 3-6s in a performance for the community. To complement our wellbeing program, the students will be participating in Respectful Relationship sessions. The idea of this program is teaching for emotional and social learning.

Grade 3/4 Swimming Term 3

Dear Parents/Guardians of Year 3/4 students,

Final preparations are being made to the swimming program for this term. The pool is starting to request numbers, so they can provide the appropriate number of staff needed and we need to finalise bus times and timetabling issues.

At the moment, there are just over 20 students attending the swimming with only 2 weeks left for payment and consent. If you intend for your child to participate in the swimming program, can you please make the payment and consent as soon as possible on Compass. Alternatively if your child is not participating in the swimming program, could you please notify the office by emailing [email protected]

-Mr Mac.
