Existing Vegetation

• Acacia sideroxylon - BLACKWOOD ACACIA• Acacia sideroxylon - BLACKWOOD ACACIA

• Aesculus californica - (CA Buckeye or • CA Horse-chestnut)

• Aesculus californica - (CA Buckeye or • CA Horse-chestnut)

• Quercus robusta - Valley Oak• Quercus robusta - Valley Oak

• Malva parviflora - Cheese Weed, Little mallow

On our initial site inspection the flora we found included Acacia sideroxylon, Quercus robusta (Oak) and Aesculus californica (Buckeye) in terms of trees. It is our belief the Oak and Buckeye were planted and the Acacia is a volunteer. The Oak and buckeye surviving indicate that the site does not get much water as one tree shuts down for our dry season (buckeye) and the other is drought tolerant after its first few years (oak).

• Foeniculum vulgare - Fennel• Foeniculum vulgare - Fennel

• Amaryllis Belladonna - Naked Lady• Amaryllis Belladonna - Naked Lady

• Succulents• Succulents

• Hedera spp. - Ivy• Hedera spp. - Ivy

The non-tree plants on the site are Dandelion, Clovers (Oxalis which we were told by a neighbor shows up each winter), some grass ground cover, fennel, malva parviflora (Mallow) and English Ivy. The presence of clover indicates a low level of nitrogen. We believe this to be true as the soil seems to consist of sand over bedrock with very little organic mater mixed in. The dandelion and mallow presence indicates that the property has been cultivated or tilled. We don’t believe this is the case here, but the area gets much human and animal traffic and the soil gets disturbed.

Concept - Earth Care, People Care & Fair Share

• Permaculture Showcase Site and Education through classes taught by permaculture designers and sign-age

• Community Building - Encourage the neighborhood use of the site as a gathering place. Encourage neighborhood participation in the education, installation, harvests, and security.

• Produce a yield for those that may not have regular access to locally grown food - Free Farm Stand and St. Gregory of Nyssa Food Pantry. Produce a market yield. Produce a yield of Permi-plants through development of a Propagation/Nursery system. Finally, measure all yields.

• Video Documentation of the Transformation - Before and After

• Media Attention for Permaculture, Local Food Production and Eco-awareness

• San Francisco Policy - Use the site as precedent for setting San Francisco policy on the usage of vacant lots

• Financially self-sufficient - Grants, Donations, Sale of Yields, % of Educational Inputs
